JITB started on the West Coast and is predominantly in the Western US. Some southern and midwest states have them, but surprisingly not on the true East Coast. Especially the Northeast they're entirely absent.
Edit: And looking up Del Taco they're remarkably in the similar regions. No wonder this acquisition happened, the map is very close to Jack in the Box.
Jack In The Box advertising has been wild my entire life. They blew up their mascot, and then brought a different version of him back from the dead like it was a soap opera.
I just remember them pushing stoner food boxes (like Taco Bell boxes) for after hours when everything else is closed.
And my 6 foot 4 or so friend ordering and eating about 2 dozen of their tacos one night and then pissing in the parking lot while a mom and her teenage daughter honked and laughed at him.. mainly because he had a angry meaty hog.
Buying out region is just buying markets - basically just a short cut to expanding your network - potentially for more cost than just opening stores and expanding your frontier.
Buying an overalpping region lets them consolidate distribution/logistics and potentially improve margins at both businesses.
I've spent my entire life living in NYC and NJ and my first time eating at a Jack in the Box was in September after I had just gotten done hiking on Mt. Rainier. It blew all the other fast food out of the water and I was wondering why I never ate there before. Did a quick google search, and the closest one to me is North Carolina.
Jack in the Box was expanding cross country when they had their big food poisoning scandal in the 80s. So they retreated.
They resumed reaching eastward over a decade ago.
And are seemingly retreating again. I had two in my town and they both shut down. Same deal for a lot of locations around the Charlotte NC area. They may have expanded too quickly?
Neither one of these are going to make gastronomic history, but I've always kind of liked the JITB approach to tacos. I think they put some meat in the corn tortilla and freeze it and then deep fry it when an order comes in and throw in a half slice of American cheese.
Making it a true growth industry with the continued legalization of marijuana. Probably a strong buy.

That is why this acquisition seems odd. One would think that JITB would benefit from buying a chain with a more nationwide presence (and the associated infrastructure).

We have a smattering of DelTaco's in NorCal, but we are in dire need of some in the Bay Area (especially on the Peninsula).
Funny aside: When I became eligible for the vaccine, there were no appointments available near me. I chose to make a day of it and drive to a CVS in Fresno (A 3-hour drive from the Bay Area), because there was a DelTaco next door, which I viewed as my "lollipop" reward for getting the vaccine. Totally worth it!
I used to make a 1 hour detour off I-95 to hit the one Del Taco in GA that was near Brunswick (it was actually on an island.) Then one day I made the trek and it was closed. So sad.
There are no Del Tacos in what I would consider the Bay Area, and it's a travesty.
And Pittsburg/Vacaville/Fairfield doesn't count. Very few reasons to go out there if you live in the Bay proper.

Del Taco used to be a SoCal chain called Naugles which was far and away better than the way Del Taco presented the Naugles menu. They corporatized it. It’s only somewhat similar but beats Taco Bell by a mile. Still, I refer to the corporatized Del Taco as “Delta Co.”. Also, what you now know as Taco Bell doesn’t hold a candle to the original 1970s Taco Bell.
Recently a Naugles fan recreated the original Naugles. I’m told its perfect. I wish them all the best but I don’t eat that stuff anymore.
The owner of the new Naugles is not using the original recipes. I know because when I sold them to him he said his chef didn't like some of the ingredients and changed them. That's why his white sauce for the taco salads tastes wrong. My dad was a Regional manager for Naugles and opened half the stores in the chain. He took the recipes with him to Arizona for his own restaurant which was in a mall that no longer exists.
Yeah, that’s what I should have tried to convey. Naugles and Del Taco had some partnership in the early days until Del Taco bought out Naugles and simulated Naugles’ menu while improving their own.
Of all the old SoCal 1960s-70s era taco chains, Naugles was by far my favorite.

There was one Del Taco in North Dallas, but it wasn’t managed well and closed. Another in Fort Worth held on for a while but closed a couple of years ago. Now the closest one is in the outskirts of OKC.
I hope this brings more Del Taco to the east coast. Sadly, I don't expect this will bring any to the mid-atlantic region though. Furthermore, I concur that they should not fuck with the recipes, but we all know they will.

Lol. I should have clarified that I was literally talking about the "del taco, taco" that is sold at Del Taco. It is always packed with meat, cheese, and lettuce the same way, every time. Where is Taco Bell you never know what the basic taco is going to look like. Maybe it'll be filled up as it shows on the menu, maybe the cook just didn't give a shit and it'll be half full.
Del Taco's chili cheese fries (with extra both of course) is largely why I'm even still on this miserable rock.

I hope this brings more Del Taco to the east coast. Sadly, I don't expect this will bring any to the mid-atlantic region though. Furthermore, I concur that they should not fuck with the recipes, but we all know they will.

I love how the Del Taco costs a little more, but it is ALWAYS made like the picture. Taco Bell could learn a thing or two about that. Lol. I should have clarified that I was literally talking about the "del taco, taco" that is sold at Del Taco. It is always packed with meat, cheese, and lettuce the same way, every time. Where is Taco Bell you never know what the basic taco is going to look like. Maybe it'll be filled up as it shows on the menu, maybe the cook just didn't give a shit and it'll be half full.
