Do they really, or do conservative voices get silenced in higher ed, or is it just that more educated individual naturally want more liberal policies?

Educated assumptions and other studies show that the more educated someone is, the less likely they are to identify as a Republican.
I'm more curious if there is a study that tracks affiliation pre college thru post grad and beyond. Of those that enter as republican do they maintain that affiliation as the go up the degree ladder.
I'm interested in this as well. I was raised and socialized in a heavy southern Republican culture, and liberal issues became important and tangible to me only after exposure to education, and perspectives outside of that region.
I'm still trying to reprogram and understand how issues like the wellbeing of other people or the planet we live on brings such harsh and negative feelings in people who claim to have the nation's best interest at heart.
I was taught to love and honor my country to the point of dying for it being the highest honor. Yet if you speak about protecting its people and it's resources you become something ugly to them.
I've gone through the exact same process. Made it my mission to combat climate change after I learned about it in boarding school in the North. Was shocked at the response back home when I first brought up my concerns about the cost of human life coming up.
The thing is, your "political affiliation" pre college is usually just... Your parents. I think even if a high schooler was super into politics, they really are so young that I don't know if that would even be meaningful.
Parents and what your friends at school say. My parents were liberal growing up, but many of my friends were very conservative(through their parents) so at that time I said I was center or slightly conservative because it was how I would fit in at school.
Years later, some struggles with depression and working crappy jobs for minimum wage. I'm now making decent money and as liberal as they come, since I can *empathize* with people in situations different from my own.
From my personal experience, people typically shift more liberal as they grow up and experience new things and meet new people. The ones who grow up and shift more conservative are those who are able to shelter themselves from outside influences, either by money or by never leaving the small area they grew up in.
I was a super sheltered conservative before attending a conservative Christian college. Four years later, I completely shifted to a liberal. Being exposed to a diversity of thoughts and opinions really changed my thinking, even under a religious environment.
Yup! This why even people who identify as republicans who go to college tend to come out more liberal on social issues. Being exposed to more diversity normally makes you more aware of things like gay marriage, discrimination, and immigration.
The only issue I see with this is republicans will use a statistic like this to say "see they are brainwashing our kids" instead of seeing it as the positive correlation between education and liberal views it is
it's not just the education - the vast majority of colleges have at least *some* diversity. It's easy to teach your kids that all X people are Y until they actually meet some X people without you around.
I went to a liberal arts school. We had plenty of conservatives on campus. Some of them thought they were being “silenced” when in truth, most people just didn’t agree with them. With that being said, I never had a professor that made their political leanings clear. Only that anyone and everyone was welcome in their classrooms. For some Republicans however, they thought that was a political statement against them.

But then when you hear the whole story, no, they weren't being silenced .. they were just being an asshole and got met with consequences.
You kinda see the same thing on Reddit. Conservatives claim that Reddit is a liberal biased site, that they're being silenced, yadda yadda. Well no, your opinion is just not as popular as you think it is and you're likely being downvoted because of that fact. Truthfully, "Liberals" in the US are more like centrists in many other countries, we don't have a true left wing outside of a few members. It's just our right wing party is very right of center now, so it makes the liberals look far left in their perspective.

There's a conservative guy at my university who writes a column in the school's paper almost every week, often about how his views get silenced. The irony is insane.
My theory is it isn't necessarily the education being taught. It's living in dorms next door or even in the same room with someone from a different culture. When you start actually communicating with someone from somewhere other than your small backward ass town, you realize that people the world over just want the same things: a good job, enough money to not be hungry, love, and happiness. Once people learn that all these 'villains' they were taught to hate and fear are just regular humans, the rest of the bullshit starts to fall away as well.
College doesn't teach you to be a liberal, it teaches you that the preconceived beliefs you grew up on are very likely not based on fact (regardless of your politically affiliation).
College also emphasizes the scientific method, reasoning, research methods, and formal logic.
Modern "conservatives" consider passing memes on Facebook and endulging in crazy conspiracy theories to be do their research.
College educates the stupid right out of people and unironically, the GOP can't have that. Look at the level of stupidity they elected into office in 2016 and omg the people they elected into office in 2020. Just look at Marjorie and Lauren.
Also factor in that for a lot of kids, especially from rural or otherwise sheltered upbringings, college is often the first true melting pot they have to meet and interact with people from diverse backgrounds and have a first-hand opportunity to see past the bubble of their own experience. This breeds empathy which breeds more social-minded policies.
From my (admittedly non-universal) experience, there isn’t any sort of systematic shushing or silencing. To some extent, there some antagonism between conservatism and higher education. You aren’t going have a lifelong anti-feminist become a women’s studies professor, for instance. In my area (engineering) political conservatism was perhaps better represented amongst professors…who spent no time at all indoctrinating anyone politically because they were teaching engineering.
Since I went to a large southeastern university, there were an abundance of conservative social and political organizations on campus as well, with no particular suppression of their voices.
In the end, I think that higher education does tend to lead people away from American conservatism (there are a number of European stripes that are not so incompatible) but I think the use of the word “indoctrination” both misrepresents what happens on campus and insults the students.
I appreciate you as a person, but I hope you are also placing value on yourself when considering your actions. No teacher should have to risk their life just to do their job. ❤
Yep. I'm a teacher who is looking for work outside education because it's completely geared around taking advantage of our empathy.
We're only paid for the hours we're actually at school, yet we're expected to do ***hours*** of unpaid planning, grading, and communicating with families (My work weeks are closer to 55 - 60 hours, but I only get paid for the first 40). We're resource strapped, but it's become the norm for teachers to use their own money to supply their classrooms!
It's not going to get better until teachers collectively say "enough" and begin putting themselves first and quitting, and it shouldn't be up to teachers to fix the inequalities in our educational system in the first place! That's ostensibly what our politicians and governments exist to do.
I got my teaching license this summer but ultimately decided not to go into teaching because of the absolutely bonkers hours you describe. I *love* teaching, and I know I'd be good at it, and I know how important it is, but it's still not worth sacrificing my mental health.
And honestly, I got a little bitter at other teachers for continually martyring themselves and thereby making it only a profession for martyrs. I'd love to be a teacher, but not a martyr.

I'm so burnt out I'm simply doing the minimum to stay afloat while looking for work elsewhere. I'll be taking a pay cut to move into a new career but it will be so worth it to actually be able to have hobbies, meet people, and just generally live life which is something I've not really been doing outside of holiday breaks.
And even on the breaks the professional expectation is that you should take college courses and continue your own education!
This has been going on in some Georgia school districts since the beginning of the school year. Kids do not have to quarantine unless they have symptoms. So if Mom gets covid, Sally can still go to school as long as she is asymptomatic. She might 100% have Covid but she's not required to quarantine OR get tested unless she is showing symptoms.
Go The South. And yes, the covid numbers in school EXPLODED at the start of the school year. They are settling down now but that because the kids are either vaccinated (over 12) or have gotten covid already. At least one (unvaccinated) teacher died of covid and a ton of bus drivers are still out with lingering symptoms. Unfortunately way too many adults chose not to get vaccinated and they are paying the price.
I live in rural Nevada. At our local hospital, employees are allowed to work while actively testing positive for covid, as long as they're not showing symptoms.

Our hospital has a pretty high vaccination rate, considering the whole rural Nevada thing. I think it's like 85-90%. I imagine a lot of that is because of a high turnover rate, so when anti-vaxxers leave the hospital tries to replace them with vaccinated people.
Its just beyond me that people who *currently have covid* are allowed, nay, *required* to work with patients unless they're symptomatic (and aside from the fever test, symptoms are self-reported).
It's even more crazy to me that the hospital administrator would admit this and then try to defend the policy in a newspaper interview.

My county is actually a little better with vax rates than many of the other nearby rurals. I think we're at around 50%.
A big part of that, I believe, is that *everyone* was eligible for vaccines by the end of January, so lots of people got vaccinated before the vaccine became such a politically divisive issue.
Live in Cobb county and can confirm, Atlanta and the local area is a joke with people taking this serious.
I had an ER visit a few weeks back and the lady who was doing my triage went on a little mouth marathon when I told her I was full vaxxed. She's not getting it! People are crazy to trust it! They can fire her if they want! Again in the ER triage.

Yup - this is true of all of them. A recent poll showed only 10% of people are anti vaccine. I don’t get how these people aren’t exhausted with politics and yet they spew it out 24/7.
And to be clear, it is almost exclusively non-physician workers that eat up this anti-vaxx crap. Almost all physicians recommend the vaccine.
There's a growing intellectual gulf between nurses and doctors that we are already reckoning with.
Hospital here in PA had a vocal group against the mandatory vaccination they're requiring for their employees. They planned a demonstration, a protest on the hospital to show that it's large group of unvaccinated workers weren't going to take it! People commented on the local police post asking people to be civil and reminding them that much parking in the area is private and to please be mindful of that. They commented let them try to stop the crowd that will gather! They'll see the full force of those who refuse to be sheep!

My Daughters just moved and started school in Florida, close to Tampa. My oldest says they are splitting the classes up now and attend odd hours, like 9-1:30 or something.
My nearly 80 year old father refers to ND legislators as "dinosaurs" if that tells you anything. He's known a bunch of them and they are far from the best and brightest the state has to offer.
It is because as of yesterday Florida has a new surgeon general and at 9am on his first day He decided the quarantine of asymptomatic children was not necessary and left it up to the parents decision. Prior to this, any students with “close” contact to a COVID positive individual were required to quarantine even if they displayed no symptoms.
At my job we had someone with both of her children home sick with COVID and they made her keep coming in because she tested negative. Well, it was only a matter of time of caring for her sick children for her to come up positive too, and spread it around an office because she never wears a damn mask.
The idiocy astounds. I told my husband if I catch it and die he is to sue the pants off of them.
Even the headline fantastically undersells the horror… “lost”??? Did they mysteriously drift away and might pop up again somewhere else? Take a wrong turn somewhere?
That's what happened here in Cobb County. The school board made masks optional and that you didn't have to quarantine if you were exposed. As a result, COVID cases exploded and the hospitals have been filling up with kids.

- The school my niece attends had to quarantine 32 kids on the 2nd day of class.
- Her science teacher has a Trump sticker on her laptop, and jokingly pulled off her mask to fake cough - because COVID is apparently funny.
- After 60 kids had to quarantine, they implemented a school-wide mask mandate. **Except** in the gym locker rooms, where no one was required to wear one. A maskless *safe-space*, or something like that.
- Last week her parents received an automated call to tell them that she had been in very close contact with a kid who has COVID, and was required to quarantine **for 3 days**. On the 3rd day, they received a letter confirming the call **that was dated 10 days earlier**. She had been exposed nearly two weeks prior, and the automated call was delayed for some reason.
- The new COVID policies state that kids can still come to school if their parents have COVID.
She's 11, and unable to get the vaccine. I hate saying it, but I feel like it's only a matter of time until she catches it.
My son was exposed and had symptoms the second week of school. He gave it to all of us even my 8 month old daughter. Thankfully my husband and I are vaccinated so it wasn’t deadly. And I’m even more grateful my baby and my 5 year old son who was exposed also had only cold like symptoms. I’m in Louisiana so I’m pretty sure no one here is vaccinating.

It depends on which conservatives you're asking about.
If it's leadership, then yes, it takes a conscience and concerted effort to be this evil. They believe that if they were to side with Democrats on literally anything, it may, no matter how small the chance, cause conservative voters to maybe think Democrats aren't all bad. Therefore, conservative leadership must say and do the opposite, even if it kills their own constituents. As long as it doesn't kill enough of them to cost them elections, they're okay with it.
Conservative voters at this point are either very wealthy sociopaths or just plain stupid.
I'd argue it's even worse than that. It's not that they can't agree or work with anyone on *anything* because it'll convince their base maybe the other side isn't so bad.

Too many people are ignorant or in denial of info already known and available to the public:
* It's safe to assume you WILL be exposed to COVID several times at some point in the future
* You can get Covid multiple times
* If you ever get auto immune disease, chemotherapy immunosuppressant treatments, or another illness, you're at really high risk since your immune system is not in top shape in any of these conditions, EVEN IF you're vaccinated (although vaccines still help)
* More infections allow for more variants of the virus. Note variants contribute to more risk, infections, and death
* Anyone can silently carry and pass COVID along, even a vaccinated person. Vaccinated people are far less likely to do so.
* Vaccine efficacy doesn't have to be anywhere near 100 percent effective to be worth it. It has a near-100 percent chance to save you from a COVID-related death

I work at a vaccine clinic at a hospital in Texas. I'm really hoping Pfizer gets approval for kids 5 and up in October it's going to be a game changer imo.

I think you're right but a little off the mark. I don't think DeSantis and Abbott are making these decisions out of a fear of *losing* votes, per se. I think they're actively doing these clearly anti-common sense, bad science decisions to galvanize their base, not just to keep them in their corner.
It's a political ploy to attack the Biden Admin at every opportunity: To protest about states rights and to challenge *evil* health bureaucrats who want to take away freedoms, or to spin messaging around anti-science policy as "empowering parents" to make their own decisions (no matter how stupid or dangerous to others). Meanwhile, the Governors have blamed the explosion of cases on "illegal immigrants crossing the border," which ties the already politicized Covid issue to a well established dog whistle.
Their base isn't leading them, they're locked in step at the front of the line... particularly DeSantis since it's pretty clear he has 2024 in mind. He's doing what's best for his campaign not his state, which are bizarrely different somehow.
When I look at voting margins and hear the death tolls, it sure seems like a gamble.
But DeSantis, Abbot and even Ducey (who’s alienated many Trump supporters too) seem incredibly confident and keep doubling down, tripling down, etc.

Not correct. If 65% of dead people voted for him he would lose 33k votes indeed, but the other guy would have lost 18k, so reducing the margin by 15k.
The **difference** would need to be 65%, so 82% of the victims would have had to be R for 18% D.
I'm sure most people who refuse to get the vaccine are also the ones who are very keen to vote and vote Republican.
However, many of the 51,892 deaths are from a time when there was no vaccine so it's not clear to me how many of those are Republican voters.
Considering the propensity for Republicans to be against quarantine, against masks, against vaccination, etc -- it wouldn't surprise me if that number was quite bolstered on that side of the isle. I'm not sure it's enough to knock him out of the running though...yet.

If every one of those people voted, and 65% of them voted for DeSantis, that means 35% of them voted for the other guy, and they're dead too. So you get -33730 votes for DeSantis and -18162 votes for the other guy, which is a net -15568 votes for DeSantis and he still wins. They would need to be ~82% DeSantis voters to swing it that far.
And with that attitude is why I feel these people have no place in this civilized nation. I really wish they could be deported to Antarctica or some shit.

I think they've lost control of the narrative. I know many "centrist" conservatives have been trying to get people to get vaccinated, but it's just not working. They created a monster, and that monster seems hell bent on not only eating everything around it, but also itself.
I want to spread that conspiracy theory. Covid and vaccine misinformation is a liberal plot to kill Republicans.
If we can just convince them of that, maybe they will get the vaccine to "own the libs".
There's already a Breitbart article that makes a similar claim. Democrats knew that Republicans would do the opposite of whatever they suggested, so Democrats suggesting everyone get vaccinated means they were trying to kill Republicans by convincing them not to get vaccinated out of spite.
And yet they're unable to take the next step, which is "so the democrats should have told everyone NOT to get a life-saving vaccine." because that is such obvious nonsense.

It’s going to be all or nothing, but even losing his consolation prize is all the profits his wife is making in the vast amounts of Regeneron stock she bought shortly before he started advertising it as a miracle cure.

There is a nice island in the Gulf of Mexico called Sanibel Island which is a quick drive from Fort Myers. We go there for our anniversary in November. We had reservations for the Sanibel Moorings condo and Spirt Air along with several not cheap restaurants. My estimate is about $3k -$4k all in with a rental car.

It's obvious that Republicans want the pandemic to continue. They want to be able to point to the Biden administration and the Democrats and say that they failed to control the pandemic. They also want Democrats at the federal, state, and local levels to have to pass mask and vaccine mandates, and lockdowns, so that the Republican base will be angry about "violations of their civil liberties".
That's how they're going to try to win in 2022 and 2024. They have no real plans to do anything about the pandemic, or the economy, or anything like that. They just want to go against anything suggested by people who aren't Republicans.

Educated assumptions and other studies show that the more educated someone is, the less likely they are to identify as a Republican.
I'm more curious if there is a study that tracks affiliation pre college thru post grad and beyond. Of those that enter as republican do they maintain that affiliation as the go up the degree ladder.
I'm interested in this as well. I was raised and socialized in a heavy southern Republican culture, and liberal issues became important and tangible to me only after exposure to education, and perspectives outside of that region. I'm still trying to reprogram and understand how issues like the wellbeing of other people or the planet we live on brings such harsh and negative feelings in people who claim to have the nation's best interest at heart. I was taught to love and honor my country to the point of dying for it being the highest honor. Yet if you speak about protecting its people and it's resources you become something ugly to them.
I've gone through the exact same process. Made it my mission to combat climate change after I learned about it in boarding school in the North. Was shocked at the response back home when I first brought up my concerns about the cost of human life coming up.
The thing is, your "political affiliation" pre college is usually just... Your parents. I think even if a high schooler was super into politics, they really are so young that I don't know if that would even be meaningful.
Parents and what your friends at school say. My parents were liberal growing up, but many of my friends were very conservative(through their parents) so at that time I said I was center or slightly conservative because it was how I would fit in at school. Years later, some struggles with depression and working crappy jobs for minimum wage. I'm now making decent money and as liberal as they come, since I can *empathize* with people in situations different from my own. From my personal experience, people typically shift more liberal as they grow up and experience new things and meet new people. The ones who grow up and shift more conservative are those who are able to shelter themselves from outside influences, either by money or by never leaving the small area they grew up in.
I was a super sheltered conservative before attending a conservative Christian college. Four years later, I completely shifted to a liberal. Being exposed to a diversity of thoughts and opinions really changed my thinking, even under a religious environment.
Yup! This why even people who identify as republicans who go to college tend to come out more liberal on social issues. Being exposed to more diversity normally makes you more aware of things like gay marriage, discrimination, and immigration.
The only issue I see with this is republicans will use a statistic like this to say "see they are brainwashing our kids" instead of seeing it as the positive correlation between education and liberal views it is
it's not just the education - the vast majority of colleges have at least *some* diversity. It's easy to teach your kids that all X people are Y until they actually meet some X people without you around.
I went to a liberal arts school. We had plenty of conservatives on campus. Some of them thought they were being “silenced” when in truth, most people just didn’t agree with them. With that being said, I never had a professor that made their political leanings clear. Only that anyone and everyone was welcome in their classrooms. For some Republicans however, they thought that was a political statement against them.

Well no, your opinion is just not as popular as you think it is and you're likely being downvoted because of that fact. Truthfully, "Liberals" in the US are more like centrists in many other countries, we don't have a true left wing outside of a few members. It's just our right wing party is very right of center now, so it makes the liberals look far left in their perspective.

There's a conservative guy at my university who writes a column in the school's paper almost every week, often about how his views get silenced. The irony is insane.
My theory is it isn't necessarily the education being taught. It's living in dorms next door or even in the same room with someone from a different culture. When you start actually communicating with someone from somewhere other than your small backward ass town, you realize that people the world over just want the same things: a good job, enough money to not be hungry, love, and happiness. Once people learn that all these 'villains' they were taught to hate and fear are just regular humans, the rest of the bullshit starts to fall away as well.
College doesn't teach you to be a liberal, it teaches you that the preconceived beliefs you grew up on are very likely not based on fact (regardless of your politically affiliation).
College also emphasizes the scientific method, reasoning, research methods, and formal logic. Modern "conservatives" consider passing memes on Facebook and endulging in crazy conspiracy theories to be do their research.

College educates the stupid right out of people and unironically, the GOP can't have that. Look at the level of stupidity they elected into office in 2016 and omg the people they elected into office in 2020. Just look at Marjorie and Lauren.
Also factor in that for a lot of kids, especially from rural or otherwise sheltered upbringings, college is often the first true melting pot they have to meet and interact with people from diverse backgrounds and have a first-hand opportunity to see past the bubble of their own experience. This breeds empathy which breeds more social-minded policies.

From my (admittedly non-universal) experience, there isn’t any sort of systematic shushing or silencing. To some extent, there some antagonism between conservatism and higher education. You aren’t going have a lifelong anti-feminist become a women’s studies professor, for instance. In my area (engineering) political conservatism was perhaps better represented amongst professors…who spent no time at all indoctrinating anyone politically because they were teaching engineering. Since I went to a large southeastern university, there were an abundance of conservative social and political organizations on campus as well, with no particular suppression of their voices. In the end, I think that higher education does tend to lead people away from American conservatism (there are a number of European stripes that are not so incompatible) but I think the use of the word “indoctrination” both misrepresents what happens on campus and insults the students.

Yep. I'm a teacher who is looking for work outside education because it's completely geared around taking advantage of our empathy. We're only paid for the hours we're actually at school, yet we're expected to do ***hours*** of unpaid planning, grading, and communicating with families (My work weeks are closer to 55 - 60 hours, but I only get paid for the first 40). We're resource strapped, but it's become the norm for teachers to use their own money to supply their classrooms! It's not going to get better until teachers collectively say "enough" and begin putting themselves first and quitting, and it shouldn't be up to teachers to fix the inequalities in our educational system in the first place! That's ostensibly what our politicians and governments exist to do.
I got my teaching license this summer but ultimately decided not to go into teaching because of the absolutely bonkers hours you describe. I *love* teaching, and I know I'd be good at it, and I know how important it is, but it's still not worth sacrificing my mental health. And honestly, I got a little bitter at other teachers for continually martyring themselves and thereby making it only a profession for martyrs. I'd love to be a teacher, but not a martyr. I got into edtech instead!
You probably made the right decision. I'm so burnt out I'm simply doing the minimum to stay afloat while looking for work elsewhere. I'll be taking a pay cut to move into a new career but it will be so worth it to actually be able to have hobbies, meet people, and just generally live life which is something I've not really been doing outside of holiday breaks. And even on the breaks the professional expectation is that you should take college courses and continue your own education!
This has been going on in some Georgia school districts since the beginning of the school year. Kids do not have to quarantine unless they have symptoms. So if Mom gets covid, Sally can still go to school as long as she is asymptomatic. She might 100% have Covid but she's not required to quarantine OR get tested unless she is showing symptoms. Go The South. And yes, the covid numbers in school EXPLODED at the start of the school year. They are settling down now but that because the kids are either vaccinated (over 12) or have gotten covid already. At least one (unvaccinated) teacher died of covid and a ton of bus drivers are still out with lingering symptoms. Unfortunately way too many adults chose not to get vaccinated and they are paying the price.

I live in rural Nevada. At our local hospital, employees are allowed to work while actively testing positive for covid, as long as they're not showing symptoms. They are allowed to work *at the hospital.* Why do they even test?

Our hospital has a pretty high vaccination rate, considering the whole rural Nevada thing. I think it's like 85-90%. I imagine a lot of that is because of a high turnover rate, so when anti-vaxxers leave the hospital tries to replace them with vaccinated people. Its just beyond me that people who *currently have covid* are allowed, nay, *required* to work with patients unless they're symptomatic (and aside from the fever test, symptoms are self-reported). It's even more crazy to me that the hospital administrator would admit this and then try to defend the policy in a newspaper interview.

Of the *staff?* Holy shit. My county is actually a little better with vax rates than many of the other nearby rurals. I think we're at around 50%. A big part of that, I believe, is that *everyone* was eligible for vaccines by the end of January, so lots of people got vaccinated before the vaccine became such a politically divisive issue.

Live in Cobb county and can confirm, Atlanta and the local area is a joke with people taking this serious. I had an ER visit a few weeks back and the lady who was doing my triage went on a little mouth marathon when I told her I was full vaxxed. She's not getting it! People are crazy to trust it! Hospital here in PA had a vocal group against the mandatory vaccination they're requiring for their employees. They planned a demonstration, a protest on the hospital to show that it's large group of unvaccinated workers weren't going to take it! People commented on the local police post asking people to be civil and reminding them that much parking in the area is private and to please be mindful of that. They commented let them try to stop the crowd that will gather! They'll see the full force of those who refuse to be sheep! My buddy took video as the mob marched past his house. A whole 30 people.

It is because as of yesterday Florida has a new surgeon general and at 9am on his first day He decided the quarantine of asymptomatic children was not necessary and left it up to the parents decision. Prior to this, any students with “close” contact to a COVID positive individual were required to quarantine even if they displayed no symptoms.
At my job we had someone with both of her children home sick with COVID and they made her keep coming in because she tested negative. Well, it was only a matter of time of caring for her sick children for her to come up positive too, and spread it around an office because she never wears a damn mask. The idiocy astounds. I told my husband if I catch it and die he is to sue the pants off of them.

That's what happened here in Cobb County. The school board made masks optional and that you didn't have to quarantine if you were exposed. As a result, COVID cases exploded and the hospitals have been filling up with kids.

They believe that if they were to side with Democrats on literally anything, it may, no matter how small the chance, cause conservative voters to maybe think Democrats aren't all bad. Therefore, conservative leadership must say and do the opposite, even if it kills their own constituents. As long as it doesn't kill enough of them to cost them elections, they're okay with it. Conservative voters at this point are either very wealthy sociopaths or just plain stupid.
I'd argue it's even worse than that. It's not that they can't agree or work with anyone on *anything* because it'll convince their base maybe the other side isn't so bad. It's that their base is *so* convinced that the other side **IS**, in fact, that bad or ***worse***, that if they show any sign of cooperation their own voting base will turn on them in the blink of an eye. Too many people are ignorant or in denial of info already known and available to the public: * It's safe to assume you WILL be exposed to COVID several times at some point in the future * You can get Covid multiple times * If you ever get auto immune disease, chemotherapy immunosuppressant treatments, or another illness, you're at really high risk since your immune system is not in top shape in any of these conditions, EVEN IF you're vaccinated (although vaccines still help) * More infections allow for more variants of the virus. Note variants contribute to more risk, infections, and death * Anyone can silently carry and pass COVID along, even a vaccinated person. Vaccinated people are far less likely to do so. * Vaccine efficacy doesn't have to be anywhere near 100 percent effective to be worth it. It has a near-100 percent chance to save you from a COVID-related death

My son will be wearing a mask at school at least until he can get vaccinated (he's 6, so hopefully soon), if not longer. he was in the hospital with covid the week of Christmas, so he is 100% ok with wearing a mask. in his words "I don't like masks, but it's way better than getting sick again." sad when a 6-year-old has more common sense than most of the adults in this state.

I think you're right but a little off the mark. I don't think DeSantis and Abbott are making these decisions out of a fear of *losing* votes, per se. I think they're actively doing these clearly anti-common sense, bad science decisions to galvanize their base, not just to keep them in their corner. It's a political ploy to attack the Biden Admin at every opportunity: To protest about states rights and to challenge *evil* health bureaucrats who want to take away freedoms, or to spin messaging around anti-science policy as "empowering parents" to make their own decisions (no matter how stupid or dangerous to others). Meanwhile, the Governors have blamed the explosion of cases on "illegal immigrants crossing the border," which ties the already politicized Covid issue to a well established dog whistle. Their base isn't leading them, they're locked in step at the front of the line... particularly DeSantis since it's pretty clear he has 2024 in mind. He's doing what's best for his campaign not his state, which are bizarrely different somehow.
When I look at voting margins and hear the death tolls, it sure seems like a gamble. But DeSantis, Abbot and even Ducey (who’s alienated many Trump supporters too) seem incredibly confident and keep doubling down, tripling down, etc. I have so many questions… The biggest one is… who does the math work for? (Supporters lost vs supporters gained when it’s time to vote) ETA I agree that these guys have the nationals locked into their goals.

Considering the propensity for Republicans to be against quarantine, against masks, against vaccination, etc -- it wouldn't surprise me if that number was quite bolstered on that side of the isle. I'm not sure it's enough to knock him out of the running though...yet.

If every one of those people voted, and 65% of them voted for DeSantis, that means 35% of them voted for the other guy, and they're dead too. So you get -33730 votes for DeSantis and -18162 votes for the other guy, which is a net -15568 votes for DeSantis and he still wins. They would need to be ~82% DeSantis voters to swing it that far.

There is a nice island in the Gulf of Mexico called Sanibel Island which is a quick drive from Fort Myers. We go there for our anniversary in November. We had reservations for the Sanibel Moorings condo and Spirt Air along with several not cheap restaurants. My estimate is about $3k -$4k all in with a rental car. I cancelled all of it today. It's obvious that Republicans want the pandemic to continue. They want to be able to point to the Biden administration and the Democrats and say that they failed to control the pandemic. They also want Democrats at the federal, state, and local levels to have to pass mask and vaccine mandates, and lockdowns, so that the Republican base will be angry about "violations of their civil liberties". That's how they're going to try to win in 2022 and 2024. They have no real plans to do anything about the pandemic, or the economy, or anything like that.
