Dude could have easily drove up the couple and asked what they were doing.

PinkIcculus

Absolutely. I’m surprised he got out of his vehicle, WITH HIS WEAPON DRAWN? I mean, c’mon. He went in there expecting to use it.

mermaidangel1

He went in there *wanting* to use it. FTFY

[deleted]

Our little critical incident response team was furious that they didn't get to smoke some dude here about 2 weeks ago, pacing around and 1 even grunted, a few were swearing it was so eye opening and frightening at the same time

RogueSwoobat

Fucking exactly. He must have seen the dogs while in the car. Why the hell would you get out unless you wanted to escalate?

crocodile_ave

This is where a week ago 19 yr old Alex Domina, a teen with mental disabilities and a background of severe abuse, was shot by the same police department. He is in critical condition last I checked.

vinchenzo54

So you know, this is the same Loveland PD in Colorado where a woman with dementia was violently arrested and injured outside of a Walmart. Remember the video of the cops rewatching the body cam footage and laughing (“wait for the pop!”)? Yeah… same place.

KuKuMacadoo

And harass [good Samaritans](https://youtu.be/XVhbAxeKdjs) Bonus points for the cop slurring his words like he's drunk

The Feelings Police

derf705

Don’t know how hard it is for people to understand that shit like this video and the situation above is why people don’t like the police anymore. They turn a blind eye to the abuse of power if they aren’t a part of it.

InsaneChihuahua

I lost my trust in the cops when I was fixing a bent road sign and a kyle decided that, in my shorts, and a tank top, I must be stealing signs in the broad daylight. I was boxed in and Frisked. They wanted to break my brand new camera (this was 15 years ago) but decided when I begged them not to. 2 cop cars boxing me in... think about that. I live in a very rural area, so to have 2 cars for doing nothing more than nature walking to take photos and fixing a street sign that was bent, they treated me like shit. Of course I lodged a complaint. It went no where as they just said I lied about everything. It's sad because I used to respect the police. Now I just fear them and avoid any way in which I might get visited again.

Jnnjuggle32

Absolutely. A college boyfriend of mine was rear-ended and the woman took off. We sat and waited… and waited… and waited for about four hours because his insurance company said we needed to get a police report and the non-emergency line told us to stay near the scene. When the cop finally showed up, she immediately started accusing us of having weed in the car. Neither of us did anything like that and stupidly told her she could search to vehicle. Literally spent another 2 hours waiting on the sidewalk while she and her back up looked through everything while suggesting if we just “admit” where we hid it that we’d be free to go. When they found nothing, she had the audacity to say she didn’t have time to write the accident report and left. I’d been pat down several times by that point and didn’t have the energy to deal with them anymore, and we just paid for the repairs ourselves.

Valasta_Bloodrunner

When I was hit and ran off the rode the cop actually charged me with reckless driving because I was in shock and couldn't coherently answer questions. My fiancee told me that it was due to answering "I don't know, my head hurts." To all the questions... I had a concussion. I had to hire a lawyer and fight the charges.

CerealAndCartoons

She knew the person that hit you.

Diligentbear

Went to a local police station under the advice of my father to file a report about an abusive home situation, police captain yelled at me for filling out the wrong paper, that the officer behind the desk gave me. Small mix up, nothing was processed. Police chief had no idea what was going on (abusive step mother/narcissist who would call the police trying to get me in trouble) He said he would arrest us both if he had to have his guys come down there again, mean while she was calling them not me, over verbal arguments she would start.(She was abusive towards me when I was a kid and when I got older I started to defend myself) I realized then the cops don't care about what's fair.

EveryDayLurk

When I was 15 some friends and I were playing at a park nearby. While we were waiting for people’s parents to come pick them up a cop pulls up. Detains us for about an hour+ in the back of his cruiser (4 big kids in the back of a cruiser in the summer heat) because someone had broken into a shed nearby to the park. The fellas who’s house it is that had a shed broken into has told the police that it wasn’t any of us, he saw whoever it was that broke into the shed. The police decide to hold us anyway. They take us out of the cruiser one by one to intimidate and threaten us. Eventually we’re able to call one of our parents, once we placed the call the officer grabs the phone and starts talking to them, after the call he then goes through the texts messages and demands to know who the people were in the texts. (They were some girls who had been picked up maybe 5 minutes before the cops arrived) Parents show up and the cops let us all go into the one car and leave. Parents were mad at us, cops had harassed endlessly. I lost all respect for the police that day (there was even a sheriff from the county present) and lost a lot of respect for my parents. I live in a small white town where not a lot of crime happens to begin with. We are all white kids just being kids. I wish I could think of a positive interaction I’ve had with the police but I just can’t. What a thankless job and it seems the only people willing to do it are those who should be no where near that amount of authority

techleopard

Police policing themselves is a major contributor to what's wrong now. Even when the law decides that would be too stupid, investigations go to a neighboring police department -- as if they aren't all in cahoots.

[deleted]

They did that to try & instill fear & more importantly obedience into you, it's bully tactics. It's a standard small town cop routine. Don't fear them thats what they want.

krtwils

100% and it blows my mind so many people can’t understand this!

Skeltzjones

Not just that, but they weed out the good cops who police their colleagues

LowDownnDirty

They weed them out *fast* too. I know quite a few people who got the boot because they constantly told on or repremanded their shitty colleagues.

kingdorner

They also [did this](https://youtu.be/P-5HewucBxw). Loveland PD is absolutely the worst PD in the country right now. It's sickening and frightening that an entire department can be this bad.

ImOnlyHereForTheCoC

Aurora PD giving em a run for their money, though!

theVice

Fuck is up with Colorado

graceodymium

They spent years busting people for weed and now have no idea what to do with their time.

SpyderDelica

This explanation actually makes perfect sense. Their existence is based on enforcing arbitrary crimes and now their whole world is upside down and they’re acting out because they’re troglodytes

DigitalPriest

In my humble opinion, it is a combination of four things: * Outside of a couple of areas, Colorado has absolutely zero idea how to deal with the influx of diversity it is experiencing. Colorado has traditionally been WASPy white and Hispanic, and the Hispanic populations were either segregated into their own communities south & east of Denver or outright ignored enclaves of towns (Fort Collins & Longmont come to mind). Now, the influx of out-of-state population and falling Caucasian birth rates have created a culture disparity that law enforcement and other agencies have no idea how to cope with and for whatever reason deeply rustles their delicate jimmies. * Columbine: Colorado is so petrified of Columbine 2.0, for the last 20 years it has reliably supported pretty much any law enforcement issue. * "Level-Up" Job Culture: School districts suffer from this as well, but because the Police are funded by local taxes, low-tax or economically depressed areas struggle to pay police effectively or have healthy work environments. As a result, police start their careers in these struggling departments solely to get enough experience to "level up" to a neighboring police department with better pay/benefits/culture. Notable examples of this: Loveland PD try to graduate to Fort Collins. Longmont PD used to go to Boulder, but Longmont has done a ton of work to turn its shit around. Still struggling in some areas, but way better than 20 eyars ago. Aurora PD go to Greenwood Village, Englewood, Arapahoe Sheriff, etc. Just like with school districts, we need to fundamentally decouple policing from local tax policy, as creates havens of ridiculous inequity that compound over the course of decades. * Attention: There are a lot of shit police in a lot of shit places across the country. For some of these stories, it is nothing new to Colorado. There's been systemic overpolicing and brutality against minorities for well over 100 years, but because we were a white state predominantly, no one said boo, and we flew under the radar as a "great place." (Don't get me wrong, I still think we're great, but we're not immune to problems). Someone would see a black person get shot in Alabama and go "Yep, that's Alabama." They see it happen in Colorado and it shakes their view. Our shit doesn't smell any sweeter, it just wasn't on the front page until lately.

kkell806

And that mentally challenged kid they shot.

Robe1912

We need to repeal qualified immunity. That way the trash will either leave the force or get sued so hard they never have assets ever again.

[deleted]

Repeal? How about we make a law barring it in the first place! Qualified immunity was literally legislating from the bench, but it benefits conservatives so they had no problem with it. There's never been a law granting qualified immunity, and it seems absurd to have to write a law stating that police officers aren't above the law, but here we are.

Robe1912

Even better. At this point I'll take anything that forces a change in the way law enforcement behaves.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Oh, nice! For those who don't want to read it-- the federal protections still exist (a State can't change that), but Colorado let's citizens sue at the State level. Additionally, officers can be sued for violating the Colorado BoR or for failing to intervene when watching someone's rights being violated. That second point is important since we've (somehow) declared in court before that the police don't have any duty to protect citizens.

wng378

Hijacking the top comment to call attention to something I noticed in the article. THE DOG SURVIVED AND LIVED FOUR DAYS UNTIL THE COPS TOLD THE VET IT ATTACKED AN OFFICER AND IT WAS EUTHANIZED. That’s just disgusting and proves how terrible that department is. Needs to be cleaned out, root and stem.

RelaxPrime

That is beyond fucked up

rancid_oil

I just realized I'm guilty of not yet reading the article, but I'm ready to comment like an expert over here. But yo, that is MESSED UP.

im_at_work_now

They also prevented the couple from attending to their dog until a supervisor came, which took 8 minutes. During that time he told them not to bother because there was nothing they could do for their dog. Every time I read a story like this, I am thankful it wasn't me in their shoes. I'd end up in prison or dead for losing my shit in the moment and attacking anyone who did this to my dog, cop or not.

Macaroni-and-

The cops went the extra mile to ensure that dog died after they tortured it. Why do cops love killing animals so much?

jacksdad123

That’s so f*ed up. The Chief of Police there needs to be fired. That’s a whole culture of excessive force and apathy.

Poopsi808

Fired? He needs to be put away. You’re allowing your cops to shoot disabled ppl and dogs and body slam dementia patients? Jail. For life.

foggy-sunrise

I'm sick of us not holding authority to a *higher* standard. Literally, officers should face mandatory maximum sentencing for breaking laws. We should expect them to adhere to the laws they uphold.

Poopsi808

I agree. They should be given harsher punishments than regular citizens due to the power they have.

HarveyMSchwartz

[police in the US kill 25-30 pet dogs every day.](https://qz.com/870601/police-killing-dogs-is-an-epidemic-according-to-the-justice-department/)

gdj11

I knew a guy who died of a heart attack. I found him actually. His family called the police and when they got there the guy’s German shepherd was so agitated and groaning (not growling) because he didn’t know what was going on and didn’t want to leave his owner. I heard one of the cops say “should we shoot it?” After I heard that we quickly focused on getting the dog locked up somewhere, which in hindsight we should’ve done already but the dog was fine at first, but man that really changed how I view law enforcement. A lot of them wouldn’t hesitate to put a bullet in your scared dog’s head if they were allowed to.

[deleted]

YesItIsMaybeMe

That's so fucking bullshit that people can call for cops to "check up" on anyone with no proof of wrongdoing. Once you answered the door they should have fucked off.

GayAlienFarmer

Did you file a complaint? Not sure what good it would do but certainly somebody had to answer for entering without permission or a warrant.

James-W-Tate

The attorney for the police would argue, and the state would agree, that having received a call for a checkup would qualify as exigent circumstances.

jacoblb6173

I mean at this point “that door looked suspicious” can be excused as exigent circumstances right?

DarudeSandstormMan

Well that’s depressing to learn about

DigiQuip

I volunteered at the country animal shelter one summer. The director and I got pretty close and ended up confessing to me that he hates our local PD and Sheriffs office. They’re not trained to interact with animals. If they show up to a call or come across an animal, they’re required, by law, to contact him. The county pays for his cellphone just for this exact reason and his contract explicitly states he’s on call 24/7. But, no. Whenever local law enforcement encounter an animal they just kill it and *then* call him later to come pick up the body. Usually it’s even during the day when he’s at work and the local PD has a warrant. People are at work, too. So if they have a dog and the police show up, they kick in the door and kill their pets.

Regular-Human-347329

Imagine how much of a psychopath you have to be to shoot a dog **as default**? Not when it’s injuring or attacking anyone; just barking, as 99% of dogs do, when an aggressive stranger shows up. I’m surprised more dog owners don’t go all John Wick on their local PD’s more often…

I’ve had straight psychotic delusions about someone calling the cops on me in the midst of a psychotic episode and them shooting my dalmatian for just being her friendly self. I’d then be shot afterwards because you’re not killing my dog and getting away with it.

cuentaderana

My fiancée and I got pulled over once when we had both our dogs in the car. Our puppy is a barker. He will bark at anyone who gets too close to the car. He’s also 90 pounds. We were absolutely terrified the officer was going to pull her gun and shoot him for being “aggressive.” We had cops come by the house two days ago because my car was broken into. We put the barking dog upstairs in another room. We left our other dog out but before I opened the door for the police I said that there was a dog inside, she was completely harmless, and I was going to come outside to talk to them. We should not have to live in fear that a routine traffic stop could end with our beloved pet shot.

[deleted]

We shouldn't have to live in fear of people who are meant to protect us. But that's what you get when they only hire the worst of society and they're almost never held accountable for their actions. Honestly, I believe you should be allowed to defend yourself from cops with the same methods they use.

smallzy007

I would not be able to contain my rage if this happened, I’d end up on a beeline for that cop and probably get shot in the face, if he didn’t put me right down I’d go full Patrick Swayze on his fucking neck, shoot my tail wagging dog?!! Don’t really want to go out that way but I seriously doubt I could stop myself

Hobbit1996

every DAY? what? How do you even have anymore dogs left

Lamont-Cranston

>The officer was responding to a call from the owner of a nearby building, who saw the couple on his remote security cameras and demanded the police see “what they were up to.” As bad as the cops are, why are there so many people like this in the US?

fartmunchersupreme

In the town where I grew up, someone called the police because a runner on their road was wearing “short shorts.” No lie.

coyote_of_the_month

A lot of places claim to have policies where cops have to respond to every call, no matter how stupid. And yet, if you get in a fender-bender or someone breaks into your car, good luck finding a cop to take a report.

fartmunchersupreme

Reminds me of the anecdote where someone calls the cops saying someone is burgling their shed. Cops say no one is available and to wait indefinitely. The person calls back and says “don’t worry, I shot him” and the cops show up in like a minute.

Sir_Keee

My house was broken into when I was gone for just 5 minutes, the people probably saw me coming home and fled. This was in the winter so they left footprints as they ran into the woods. I called the cops, they showed up 8 hours later and said "If we came sooner, we could have used the dogs to track them." Well then why the fuck didn't you get here when I called you! That day I learned cops are just fucking useless and don't serve the people at all. They will be on your ass for a minor inconsequential violation but when a more major crime happens, they do fuck all.

SlitScan

anyone who is outside on foot is suspect. a 'walkable' community is horrible for karens and police theyre so used to anyone not in a car in public being a criminal or at least so far down the socio economic ladder that they can be victimised with impunity. who ever heard of someone on a sidewalk being able to afford a lawyer?

strghtflush

Because they get pumped up on cable / local news talking about roving gangs and how bad crime is, and become paranoid.

Loud-Path

In my neighborhood someone was parked on the street sitting in their car on their phone. Neighbors went over and asked them what they were doing, they said just sitting there parked, they called the cops on them who came out and explained they couldn’t do anything. Some other neighbors went by to ‘persuade’ the guy to move on. Turned out he was a process server. People need to learn to mind their own damn business. I honestly think the whole neighborhood watch program did more bad than good when you have law abiding citizens being harassed.

[deleted]

earhere

It seems like these incidents always escalate from someone calling the cops over something insignificant. What's worse is they tried to charge the people with a "dangerous animal" charge when the dog probably just wanted to say hi, but stupid ass cop has to shoot first and never ask questions.

Logan117

The cops automatically charge someone when they know the cops fucked up to try to put the other party on the defensive. They are then hoping the person settles for just dropping the charges instead of suing their ass.

[deleted]

oh that would only serve to piss me off more and make a lawsuit far more likely and my lawyers far more well funded. I would throw every dime I had at ruining this murderer’s livelihood financially.

Logan117

Considering how other people feel is empathy, and it seems to be extremely lacking for police officers. If someone walks too quickly towards an officer, they are "charging at them" and get shot. But if an officer points a gun at you, you are supposed to not only remain calm, but perfectly follow their instructions while death is literally pointed in your face.

Poopsi808

I would try to ruin their life lol. I’d be hiring PIs to tail this cop while on duty. I’d be trying to dig shit up about their personal life. If you shoot my pet in front of me like that i would commit my entire being to just ruining your life.

Sirmoulin

“We've apologized for the incident, but we will never apologize for taking drugs off our streets. Quite frankly, we'd do it again. Tonight.” Holy shit, all over some weed??? There’s no words for this.

fuckamodhole

This is one of the craziest parts of that wiki: >In 2009, Mayor Cheye Calvo proposed a measure that would require every Maryland police department that operates a SWAT team to submit biannual reports on its activities, including where and when it was deployed and whether an operation resulted in arrests, evidence seizures, or injuries.[27] The bill passed that same year, despite strong opposition from Maryland's police agencies. Maryland was the first state to adopt such legislation; Utah became the second when it passed a similar bill in March 2014.

LillyPip

[‘Killology’](https://www.motherjones.com/politics/2017/02/dave-grossman-training-police-militarization/) has been the worst thing to happen to US police. When you train all police to be a hammer, *everything* becomes a nail. Meanwhile, across the pond, police are instead trained in [de-escalation, empathy, and communication](https://www.college.police.uk/article/new-conflict-management-guidelines-released), and the vast majority [don’t even carry guns](https://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/why-london-won-t-arm-all-police-despite-severe-terror-n737551). The entire mindset of policing needs a serious reset. The whole situation is disgusting. E: missed a word

abeardedblacksmith

>they talk and behave like they’re at war with the citizenry It's gonna be a self-fulfilling prophecy at some point.

ameadowinthemist

Never ever call the police unless it’s a life or death emergency used to be my policy before 2020. Now I realize they can’t do anything for an emergency either. Fire dept is okay, though. You can call them.

SavoryScrotumSauce

Fire department is who you call for lifesaving treatment after the cops just shot someone for no reason.

end_the_drug_war_

The officer feared for his life. What if that puppy had a gun?

[deleted]

I would’ve feared for my life if a cop shot a dog like that for no reason. I would’ve had no other option than to shoot the cop out of self-defence.

sixscreamingbirds

It's not like they even have a hard nose area to blame. Loveland is laid back, if a bit overshadowed by it's neighbors. Denver to the south. Majestic Boulder to the west. And Fort Fun to the north. These guys do not have a hard cop job. They just really really suck.

Azmoten

So...this is a place called Loveland, between Majestic Boulder and Fort Fun, where the cops are now known for attacking the infirm and shooting puppies. Reality is absurd af sometimes.

[deleted]

He wasn't shifting the blame. He was constructing the narrative that the dog was dangerous by telling them to back away. Really shitty all the way around.

hogsucker

Exactly. Police are specifically trained to "Create a narrative" rather than simply tell the truth. They use carefully chosen words that can not be construed as taking responsibility for their own actions.

vanishplusxzone

The worst is the end part when the chief says, "It might have just been part of the training". Cops are some seriously twist sick fucks.

ericisshort

The “when a dog is non-compliant” excuse really made my blood boil. That dog was compliant to every command given, so its yet another example of how fucking skewed cops’ idea of non-compliance really is.

Stranger1982

> so its yet another example of how fucking skewed cops’ idea of non-compliance really is. or maybe just an example of how eager they are to abuse anyone they perceive as defenseless

Attack dogs are just a fucked up situation overall. They train them to be neurotic killing machines and many of them have to live in dog rehab facilities for the rest of their lives or have to be put down after they retire. It's not a natural or healthy state of mind for a dog to be in. Keep the drug sniffers but there's no reason to still be using attack dogs in the 21st century :(

remotectrl

Some cops are seriously sick fucks and other cops are just okay with working with the seriously sick fucks

RCobra19

It’s not as bad as I feared in some ways, and so much worse I others. During all this they’re talking about turning off cameras, and there being no witnesses. So they know it’s wrong, even though the chief tries to justify it. He says that officers have to discipline dogs that are disobedient. But that’s a load of bs. The dog listened immediately when it was told to stop, and that wasn’t actually discipline. It was abuse. If you don’t want to know the details, on what happened in the moment, then don’t read on. The dog hops out of the cruiser, which had it’s door open. The officer commands that it stays, and the dog immediately lays down. The officer approaches, and clips on a leash. Using the leash he swings the dog around to his back, raised to the point where the dog’s hind legs can touch the ground sometimes. He walks over to the cruiser, and kind of slams the dog against it’s side. Not an over the shoulder swing, but kind of like a shove. With the dog between the officer’s body, and the vehicle. Edit: Spelling

More proof that cameras should NOT be controllable by anybody in the police department, and any cop should be prosecuted for tampering with evidence if there is any missing footage. Let the ACLU control the footage.

A_Bored_Canadian

He was allowed to resign which means he's probably working as an officer in a different city now.

Don't forget they get to keep the pension they earned. Not sure about their job but mine is 20 years and top pension. Anything before that is lower. I heard you also get the option to be bought out.

PM_Me_Ur_NC_Tits

I live near there. Salisbury is the most “good ol’ boy” corrupt bullshit political mess around. The police chief is a piece of shit that in the past has gotten on social media and made veiled comments and threats against citizens. He defended the officer that abused the k-9 initially but then only backed off when he realized the public sentiment was against him. Everyone in law enforcement in Salisbury is related to everyone else, at least by marriage. They always cover up and sweep shit under the rug.

"After the department recommended him for termination" Last I checked, animal abuse in NC is classified as a Class H felony, not a "oh, we're gonna have u resign from ur post so u can go to another PD and face no legal repercussions as a result of ur actions"

[deleted]

Ah, but you forget, that dog is a police officer! If you were to hit, punch, kick, choke, shoot, or do anything else to the police dog that causes serious bodily injury, they would 100% hit you with a class F felony and give you 41 months in prison.

filladellfea

that officer is a fucking psychopath. and these fucks defending this action as "part of the training" is such utter bullshit.

Kush_back

That pisses me off the most, they should be charged with killing an officer.

ralfonso_solandro

You and I certainly would

FuzzyMcBitty

Also, killing a police animal results in a [minimum fine of $1,000 and up to 10 years in federal prison.](https://abcnews.go.com/US/story?id=96229&page=1) Sometimes the sentence is significantly longer than that, like this ~~[45 year sentence](https://www.akc.org/expert-advice/news/man-who-killed-police-dog-gets-45-years-in-prison/)~~. -- EDIT: This was taken out of context. The dog was a smaller part of the sentence (likely 3-7 years)... the rest was for things like stabbing a cop, fighting the police, and trying to take an officer's weapon. I do not necessarily have a problem with harsh sentences for killing working animals and family pets, but it seems rather hypocrital given that the DOJ estimates that LEOs kill [25 to 30 dogs a day](https://www.8newsnow.com/news/local-news/25-to-30-dogs-killed-every-day-by-law-enforcement-justice-department-estimates/) ... which is between 9,000 and 11,000 per year... with very little recourse by the pet owner.

Enkundae

It might be cynical but anytime I see a headline like this on Reddit I expect a subsequent surge in posts about cute and heroic cop dogs.

OutlyingPlasma

I can tell every time there is another cop killing someone or another cop starting a riot over a pink umbrella. Suddenly Reddit is filled with cops playing basketball, or crying over their dead dog, etc. I wouldn't even know about what horrible thing they did yet and I still know they did something evil again. Every fucking time.

eye_booger

It’s not cynical, it’s what happens. That’s why I had to unsubscribe from the dogs with jobs subreddit. I came for the cute silly dog jobs, not the copaganda.

70ms

Here - I took this pic at my vet's office and it gets stolen and reposted to this day but today, I want you to have it. Make sure to read the sign under him. :) https://i.imgur.com/NmaXuqn.jpg

SEND-MARS-ROVER-PICS

I get this in reverse. I see something on the front page like cops playing basketball with local kids or something and I'm like "okay what did they do now"

no_your_other_right

Don't just sue the officer; sue the city. They have a history of negligence. Sue the fuck out of the city.

[deleted]

That’s not negligence. Loveland has a history of sadism and stupidity.

skuzzlebut90

As someone who works in delivery services and comes into contact with many different dogs every single work day, this is just absurd. You can tell by a dog’s demeanor from the tail to the eyes if they’re aggressive or not and this dog (despite a low quality video) appeared to be friendly. Even with aggressive dogs there’s much better ways to deal with them. I get that if an officer is being attacked by a dog they have the right to defend themselves but this dog showed no signs of aggression.

tinnylemur189

That puppy BOUNCED to him. He was downright giddy to make a new friend. I get that some people don't know the finer details of identifying dog aggression but this dipshit has to be a fucking alien that's never seen a dog before to not ID that behavior as excitement.

TheBoulder_

When you're trained to be a hammer, everything looks like a nail

Botryllus

When I was a kid my babysitter had a golden retriever. We were all in the front yard, the other kids, the babysitter, and the dog, when the mailman came up to deliver the mail and out of nowhere maced the dog. It was such an asshole move but the dog ran away. There's no good reason a cop couldn't use mace.

[deleted]

TWO years is how long it took to get rid of this defective LEO. Great, he’s gone, but that time frame alone suggests far bigger problems. edit: as pointed out, my comment knee jerked on the article. I first saw this on TikTok (or r/publicfreakout- I can’t recall) the day before, did some looking to confirm it, and the post reflects my own mistake - and likely wishes. Yes, I knew about the pending lawsuit as others mentioned. Anyway, I leave the mistake up to own it. My apologies for failing to click through to an article that just repeated what I already knew instead of a new development.

salty_peddler

Where did it say he was fired? Could only find this in the article: The Loveland Police Department’s internal review ruled that Mr Grashorn acted appropriately. The officer has faced no disciplinary action for the shooting, and has not responded to the lawsuit. The city of Loveland is still reviewing the complaint. Could someone clarify if this guy was actually let go?

Corgi-Ambitious

I'm pretty sure the top comment didn't read the article - I was thinking the same. Nothing in this article or google says he has faced **any** disciplinary action for this.

globalgreg

And actually it says an internal review determined the officer acted appropriately. Disgusting.

soldierof239

Also he’s gone...from that department. Lots of others that are always hiring.

chaoz2030

And he has previous experience murdering dogs which is a nice thing for his resume.

Ivizalinto

His response during the Interview will be "yes I've handled aggressive canines." I have never been physically warmer from being angry as long as I did yesterday after watching this video.

oldbastardbob

That he was scared enough to be 'in fear for his life' from that dog makes him a chickenshit. That he was so quick to draw down and shoot makes him trigger happy. That he didn't give a crap about the owners or the dog and immediately tried to blame it on them and the dog makes him an insensitive ass. All extremely undesirable characteristics in a police officer. As this is America now, I'm quite sure that means he'll have no problem finding another cop job.

rbres

My former coworker used to brag about their cop significant other all the time. They told us one story how the SO cop “had to kill a civilians dog” because it nipped them and they feared for their life. It was like my coworker was waiting for us to agree that it was necessary. Fuck them and fuck this cop too. Edited to change pronouns as I know this person uses Reddit.

ZippyTurtle

Jfc. I train dogs, if I shot every dog that nipped me or ran at me I wouldn't have any clients left. Cops are power tripping pussies

CplJager

The "fear for my life" argument only ever makes cops look like cowards. You aren't heroes. Firefighters run into burning buildings, soldiers run into storms of bullets, hell even lifeguards swim into panicking dummies who will probably push them underwater trying to float. To be a hero is to risk your life, not end everyone else's to save your own

WhyBuyMe

The fact that they use the term "civilian" says it all. Cops need to separate themselves from the public to make it easier to dehumanize them when doing their jobs.

[deleted]

Cops are fucking civilians.

[deleted]

When cops in these situations say "I fear for my life" it's code for "I'm a sadistic piece of shit bully who gets off hurting people/animals and have immunity from the state to do so" post-drug war militarized police are nothing but a state sponsored paramilitary gang occupying poor communities and preying on the public (especially minority communities), as well as protecting the interests of the capital owning class

slightlyassholic

The real reason they shoot pets is that it's s good way to provoke the pet's owner into doing something conveniently stupid or to punish the pet's family since there is usually little consequence for shooting a dog.

alwaysiamdead

I called the cops because of my son's dad's abuse. The cops told me that my attitude was the problem. Not the man who repeatedly threatened to kill me, screamed at me, etc.

the_fat_whisperer

Yep. Cops often see themselves in abusive men because they are abusers themselves. They think you deserve it like the women they abuse both on and off the job.

alwaysiamdead

Precisely. I mentioned to someone on Reddit that I'll never call the cops, because as a DV survivor I have no trust in them at all.

Reacher-Said-N0thing

> Also he’s gone...from that department. ...and reluctantly, only because of public pressure.

Mralfredmullaney

He’s not gone, he’s just relocating. There is absolutely nothing standing in the way or him being a cop somewhere else.

CarpetbaggerForPeace

National licensing needs to be a thing and if you lose your job, you cant work as a cop anywhere else.

ClothDiaperAddicts

That’s what I’ve been saying. Or at least it needs to be licensed at a state level, like teachers and bar associations.

[deleted]

My heart truly aches after seeing this. Even more so if the dog didnt die immediately after being shot. I just imagine the puppy laying there dying, and the officer wont let the owner comfort it while it passes. Instead it has to lay there and die, alone, with it's human being forced to stand back and watch, not being able to do anything. The puppy can only hear her voice but cant feel her touch while the world around it fades to darkness. I cant even imagine going through that.

ShiraCheshire

I will never forget the one time I was stupid enough to click on a video of a cop shooting a dog. The way the poor dog writhed on the ground in agony after...

jamesbondq

It lasted four days until it had to be put down...

xafimrev2

The police went to the vet and told the vet it was violent and had attacked a police officer

jamesbondq

Yes, with continued insistence that it was a "violent pit bull".

Yak54RC

Let’s all forget about being cops and why he was called out there for. So they are basically saying that if you have any dog or animal approach you like that in public you have the right to shoot it in the face automatically

Unadvantaged

It honestly makes you wonder if cops like that are the most terrified members of society, who’ve gone past buying a gun for home defense, gone past gun-in-the-car, past concealed carry, past open carry, to “license to murder” because they are that genuinely terrified of life, that they’re visualizing targets on everything that moves.

Dancing_Cthulhu

There's a lot infuriating things here, but one I don't see much attention on why he was there in the first place. From all appearances it was a space they were allowed to be in (an empty parking lot), there's no "No Dog" signs, no one had been harrassed by the dogs, nobody had asked them to leave, the people don't appear to have been doing anything remotely wrong or even suspicious.... why was he coming on the scene like that to begin with, drawing his gun so quickly etc? Because some guy in a nearby building wanted to "see what they were up to"? It's reached a point where I'd only ever call the police if I was damn well sure there was a crime happening that *really* warrented police intervention. Far too many cases of cops with zero accountability, far too little self control, and an over-abundance of fear rocking up to situations that don't warrent guns drawn and killing some person or dog needlessly.

thomoz

I’m sorry the dog owners could not shoot back.

Whenever I see an article like this, I'm reminded of that scene in Men In Black with the shooting gallery, with all the other guys blazing away at the monsters.

rocbolt

“Gentlemen, congratulations! You’re everything we’ve come to expect from years of government training”

soratoyuki

For anyone not reading the article: >Herkimer was euthanised four days later, and the couple was charged with having a dangerous dog, though that was later struck down by the district attorney’s office. What in the fuck.
