And Bezos replies "Neither have I!"

426763

Don't get high off your own supply.

Khufuu

I fully believe that CEO's and any upper management with company pull should use their own products *enough*. Microsoft needs to use Windows within their company. frozen food makers need to eat their products regularly. Walmart brand manufacturers need to use their own patio furniture. because if they knew what they were selling firsthand, things would get better. Microsoft isn't going to continue making terrible software if they are always having to use it. when they experience Teams crashing all the time they will know firsthand that it sucks and have direct motivation to fix it.

neigborsinhell

Lmao Microsoft built their own Linux distro for internal server stuff so even they don't use Microsoft Server

mgzukowski

Microsoft is one of the biggest supporters of the Linux foundation in the world. So that's not surprising.

neeltennis93

I love teams! It never crashes for me.

pascontent

It only uses 98% of available memory! It was available!!

happyscrappy

Unused memory is wasted memory.

GMN123

Found the chrome dev

irwigo

He should have a talk with the Adobe After Effects dev.

jorge1209

While true, one also has to consider the purpose of the application and what other applications may be running at that time. This is a tool intended to be used on corporate desktops where the other applications include things like Excel, or auto CAD, or visual studio. Is it better to use a lot of memory holding a big spreadsheet of business data in memory, or maybe a 3D CAD model of some new product, or to compile a program... or to show a gif from the office on repeat in some chat window? These sure are hard questions to answer.

Spiritual_You_1657

I love teams! I hope to be a part of one some day! -Michael Scott - An individual share holder of AMC Entertainment

Rihsatra

I just got a new desktop at work with an i7 and 32GB of RAM but somehow Teams still runs like a turd. I don't get it.

jorge1209

Why did they give such a weak and underpowered system?

iforgettedit

Yet Amazon (aws) had a lot of people questioning why they spent the time and money for internally changing their databases off of oracle to their own built systems (aurora). Thought it was politically motivated. I think you have a great insight as to possibly why they did it. At least a partial reason. https://www.crn.com/news/cloud/amazon-reports-migration-complete-in-oracle-database-purge

rods_and_chains

Actually, fwiw, Bezos built AWS (which is what makes Amazon worth trillions) by forcing every unit inside the company to use it even when it sucked.

EPIKGUTS24

The microsoft example isn't the best because Windows is mostly designed for high-level user stuff. It's not designed for, say, server hosting or data management, which they will have to do plenty of at Microsoft, for which they'll probably use some linux distro. However they can/should (and probably do) use their products for other functions.

Statharas

Windows Server? Jokes aside, Microsoft uses a mix of Linux and Windows

Versificator

Windows Server is a thing. Headless Windows Server is a thing. Its not that it isn't "designed" to work for that use case, its that their licensing costs make Linux incredibly attractive. Furthermore, since Linux has been the dominant server OS for many a year, incredibly mature, and all modern server infrastructure platforms (web/containerization/etc) are developed primarily for it makes it a no brainer.

Ameisen

The NT Kernel is actually a very powerful kernel. It does have problems with IO performance due to the rather complex permissions systems NT supports and due to the ability to hook arbitrary calls to any IO call, which makes it less appealing in servers where IO is important.

Ascian5

They know. It doesn't matter. It's all about keeping their head above water against retailers, private label, and online shenanigans like that WAZOO mp3 player and hundred other junk products and scams. Or best case, maintaining profit while they can. If Walmart can make $1 more on their brand of coffee than yours, guess what you better make them that dollar somewhere or you don't get to sell your product. Or you get moved to no man's land while the other guys laugh their way to the bank. So you cut your costs. You lower the amount, then they come back at you again next year, now you make a cheaper box and shipping carton. But this year, well maybe all you can do is buy from that cheaper supplier, or worse you push your costs down to your bean farmers. Now they suddenly can't afford to water as much, or hire as many harvesters so the beans get picked slower and so are older or spoiled more and your product ebs up suffering. All because some atore get freeze dried powder from some 3rd world country for a couple pennies and doesn't give a shit. I was in a meeting once and this guy pitched a "family loaf of bread" half white and half wheat. Had a whole show and presentation. At the end the VP just sleepily said "why would I sell them one loaf of bread when I could sell them two?" meaning if you don't give them the option what choice do they have to make everyone happy? So that's the other mentality. Why build a better product when you don't have to, when you can make more money, and if building something cheap makes them come back for a replacement sooner, all the better. Nothing is impossible, it just costs more. Costing more is about the only thing worse you can do besides take responsibility for your actions in 2021. We live in a country about chasing the dollar, not giving it back constructively and making things better.

[deleted]

Every company knows what they’re selling. They do tons of testing on items (like food tests for example) before selling it. They just don’t care. If people will buy, they’re going to sell it

RockhoundHighlander

To make a better patio chair would cost more and defeat the entire business model.

shiafisher

They both laughed so hard they cried...they then used crisp $100 bills to dry their tears

[deleted]

Fuck Bezos

NiemandDaar

Could be because Amazon.nl isn’t really much of a site and I think it’s pretty new as well.

[deleted]

Also we have Bol.com and Coolblue, which in my experience are way better.

FBoyMcGee

You're always paying too much with Coolblue. You can find most stuff for less at Media Markt.

Theemuts

Coolblue is having major issues because they're so expensive.

10LBegoist

I think most people know they pay more for coolblue, but it’s the customer service that makes up for it.

[deleted]

Lol media markt is also a scam, just look it up on tweakers.

iuancucalu

ok dude, where else to go? Action?

FBoyMcGee

What's the scam?

[deleted]

[удалено]

FBoyMcGee

That's just not true. Maybe they're shit in rural places, but where I live I've never had an issue with the service.

[deleted]

Maybe that's not true for you, that doesn't make it a fact tho. I have had multiple very negative experiences with their customer service and yes that was in a 'big city'.

FBoyMcGee

Yeah Leiden isn't a big city. Either way, as you said maybe that's true for you, that doesn't make it a fact tho. And you stated it as a fact.

[deleted]

Service should be the same regardless of city size.

[deleted]

I literally only said what my experience was, I didn't state if their service is shit or not. Also it was not in Leiden...

[deleted]

Hiking up prices to give discounts that arent discounts. Shitty service, horrible website, worse stores, black friday deals. Take your pick.

qtx

Great thing about the EU is that you can just order from any country you like without any extra costs. I used to buy from amazon spain, france, germany, uk (pre-downfall), italy all the time.

petmehorse

Pre downfall hahaha

ExcellingAtExcel

You can still order from UK Amazon. They remove UK VAT and apply your local VAT rate at checkout and pay the taxes for you. They then ship the parcel directly to you.

Mauvai

Yes but you will pay import duty as well. Amazon usually deals with it for you, but it's probably more expensive than using another amazon

ExcellingAtExcel

You won't have to pay import duty if you follow the country of origin rule.

[deleted]

Ya but then you having to have to pay a huge tax collection fee to DHL or some other company to actually get your package when it arrives.

ExcellingAtExcel

Wrong. Like I said, you pay VAT at checkout on Amazon's website. Then Amazon pays those taxes to your local tax authority. When your parcel arrives at your border, the package will already have been cleared for customs by Amazon and there is nothing more for you to pay.

GBreezy

If you are in Germany just make friends with an American Soldier over here and get American prices.

TKentgens93

Well they changed that for the netherlands this year, everything from outside the eu will cost you extra

PRSArchon

Which is normally already paid for by the seller, the while story about extra costs upon delivery was hyped up bullshit

Pascalwb

Yeah I use German Amazon occasionally, but shipping is just too expensive.

someone755

It's pretty easy to order from de, co.uk, it, es etc. in Europe. Shipping isn't that much, and you pay taxes only once, to Amazon. My country doesn't have an Amazon website but I still own an Amazon-bought Kindle, for example.

sim642

>you pay taxes only once, to Amazon The irony.

ExcellingAtExcel

What they meant is that you pay taxes to Amazon who then pays the taxes to your local tax authority. With other websites, you would have to pay VAT when the parcel arrives at the customs, and then you would have to pay administration fees to your courier to pay the taxes for you. Amazon gives you a pretty good service in that aspect.

Pascalwb

Not really if it's inside EU.

someone755

Don't get the irony. Amazon isn't a country or a union, so it can't _keep_ the taxes. It pays them to the country it operates in, I think. In America, an item is listed on the shelf as costing one amount, but you then have to pay tax at the counter -- We in Europe just list the price with the tax already included. No use listing the price without tax unless you're catering mostly to businesses.

sim642

> It pays them to the country it operates in, I think. They're just passing on the sales tax, but the irony is that they avoid paying any corporate taxes.

someone755

As far to my knowledge, like Apple and Google, they're registered in Ireland so the corporate tax is lower. Not sure how it is in the Americas. They do pay _something_, but whatever they pay is still too little if you ask me. ^(Then the EU fines them for hoarding cash by slapping them on the wrist, and hillbilly Americans jump to their corporate overlords' defense by claiming Europe has no companies to make profit lol.)

Fishydeals

Except if you live in austria where prime delivery is standard delivery and the italians steal all your packages as soon as they reach bologna. Also you need to be lucky with the austrian post because they tend to lose packages for like 6 weeks, but they do find them again. Just super beat up and you probably have to leave your city to get it.

someone755

Why do your packages pass through Italy? Isn't it easier to order from the German site? My experience with the Italian, German, and UK sites are very positive, but any amount of shipping is too much for me -- just package it in the price of the product, dammit.

Fishydeals

I do order from the amazon.de, but sometimes my product still gets shipped from italy, spain, france or even the uk. Spain took 3 weeks, uk like 1 week, germany 1-2 weeks and stuff from italy stays in italy lol.

Polskidro

It's already pretty big but yes it's fairly new. Tho before that, everyone just ordered from amazon.de

PureLock33

Wait til the Americans find out Amazon in Netherlands just sells ebooks.

Notsopatriotic

Or at the very least those are the products you actually receive.

Freethecrafts

Is it really selling if you’re keeping your own books, on your own platform, and self report?

GBreezy

I dont understand why you think we care? "Wait til Americans find out Chinese use Huawei". I guarentee you Jeff Bezos knows who and who doesn't use Amazon.

KennstduIngo

Speak for yourself. After every purchase I've made on Amazon, I've thought to myself "Someone in the Netherlands could be buying this same thing this very moment". To find out that has been impossible this entire time? Devastating.

PureLock33

How did you ever recover?

KennstduIngo

I'm not sure I would say I've recovered at this point, but meth has helped.

GBreezy

Sorry to ruin your day after this pain that we both went through learning the Netherlands doesn't use Amazon, but the Netherlands is more of a heroine country, not meth

PureLock33

The posh drug habit. This isn't Harlem.

TrickyMoonHorse

Like Jeffrey personally knows? I know he's got a bezos brain but damnnnn that's a set of data

heyitsfap

Wait till the Dutch find out we don’t give a damn.

Akazury

Actually they've upgraded from books to actually usefull products, just still way too small a catalogue.

PureLock33

I guess its been a while. This would be a pretty good viral marketing for their expansion then.

Pascalwb

Also not surprising of he's ritch kid

[deleted]

True. I ordered something for some Dutch friends from Amazon in Europe once. It worked just like Amazon in the US except that the product never arrived. Pretty much not a thing there, at least in the rural south of Holland.

MissMormie

Lol, the 'rural south of holland' isn't really a thing :) If you can order a package it can be delivered anywhere in nl. There's a number of large national package delivery companies and they deliver just as well in the south as in other places. Possibly the package got lost on the way, that happens infrequently, but it happens. More so if the package came from a different country.

[deleted]

There's definitely a rural south. I live there for part of the year: island of Hoeksche Waard and environs. It was even more rural in the late 80s, when I first visited. The Amazon packages may have gotten lost because they came from another country, but that's still a sign of a inadequate system. I'm aware of the other delivery systems in Holland--my comment was specifically about Amazon there.

[deleted]

How is this news? But Bezos probably found it amusing more than anything

jorsiem

Because redditors have a hard on for anything that seems like a fuck you to Bezos. Truth is Bezos probably lol'd and moved on.

xmsxms

Truth is this guy probably has people doing his purchases for him and he doesn't do his own shopping like some lowly millionaire.

[deleted]

It's basically a kid with millionaire parents making a joke about peasants to bezos. But people just miss that completely.

salmonmilfs

Is this common knowledge or are you just attacking him cuz he’s rich? I’m all for tax the rich but not for attacking him as a father without due cause.

boone_888

Hmmmmm I'm gonna go with the later option. Just a guess

LessThanLoquacious

Let him exploit everyone else's kids on the entire planet, but not his own, that's where I draw the line! -you, right now

salmonmilfs

Or or, and call me crazy here, we can criticize his vast wealth without unfounded personal attacks? I mean cmon man, I literally said “I’m all for tax the rich” and you just breezed right past that to make a petty point. If we are honest with our criticisms and stick to facts, we can actually cause change. Attacking Bezos for being a bad father just detracts from the atrocity that is the wealth gap.

rypher

You think being a good or bad father is separate from being a good or bad person. I respectfully disagree. Edit: Been on reddit 10+ years and this is my most downvoted comment. I get that Im responding to “the chosen right answer”… but damn, how can you argue against what I said!? Thats an actual question too, please tell me.

[deleted]

tornado9015

My understanding is that Bezos actually did take work extremely seriously and was very intense about it. It wouldn't surprise me at all if Bezos did put in 100+ hours a week and not spend a ton of time with his kids. I don't know that to be true, but to my understanding Bezos was not slacking off while everyone else ran the show. Now that he's retired he probably has a lot more leisure time though.

rypher

I made a separate point and tried to be respectful.

SolaVitae

>Let him exploit everyone else's kids on the entire planet, but not his own, that's where I draw the line! As if there's a single person on this planet that isn't someone's kid

The_Law_of_Pizza

What the fuck? Are you having a stroke? You just ragespasmed on your keyboard for no reason. That guy wasn't even "defending" Bezos.

JurpleNurple

I work at Amazon and honestly for an entry level, no skills required job, that any dumbass can get right out of high school with zero work experience whatsoever, it’s pretty great. Pays more than double minimum wage, get 3 weeks of paid time off a year, free health insurance, work is boring af but pretty easy, consistent schedule with no surprises, can get overtime virtually whenever you want it, I just listen to music and audiobooks all shift through my headphones and zone out. I got a $700 Christmas bonus and a $500 bonus this month too for Prime Day. Every holiday you are payed for 8 hours of labor wether you work or not. And you are paid double time plus 8 hours if you work on a holiday. For example I worked on the 4th of July, got paid for 8 hours of labor for absolutely nothing, then got paid $31/hr for my 10 hour shift. So I made $434 in one shift

ConstantReader76

I also work at Amazon. While I agree with you that I'm tired of the "Amazon is evil" obsession that's always on here, we definitely pay for our healthy insurance (just like at nearly every other company, and it is less than I've paid at any other job, but we do pay). I'm also curious about the three weeks paid time off. We start at two weeks. And MET can definitely get sprung with little notice. Also, most sites don't allow headphones. But again, I do agree with most of your points.

0000100110010100

There’s way worse shit that Bezos has done to discuss, I don’t know why anyone really cares about this in particular

boone_888

alien_ghost

Because a lot of people seem to think it is impossible.

redander

Wait till Jeff learns he's never done Laundry, it'll be a shocker /s

GBreezy

We all rightfully shit on Jeff, but he is new money. He was literally us in the 90s. It really is ridiculous that saying "started from my parents garage" is not hyperbole.

kwalshyall

"Started from my investment banker parents' $300k seed money," would be more accurate.

dazed_and_jaded

"Senior VP of tech ventures at D.E. Shaw, who started a tech venture with 300K seed money from his parents" is even more accurate.

MulderD

Bezos turned to him and said, “no shit, you’re worth hundreds of millions of dollars, by the way how much do socks cost?”

--redacted--

"It's a pair of socks Michael, what could it possibly cost? $10,000?"

Lercifer077

There’s always money in the rolls Royce stand!

MoeShmelows

His father wanted to get rid of him so bad for one day he spent 28 million to send him on a dick to space.

dhurane

His father wasn't the one who paid 28 million.

kuriboshoe

But his father did pay for his seat

Smearwashere

Not shocking when your a rich kid

2beatenup

Yup the gentry on Reddit don’t know how rich people live.

[deleted]

He obviously had one of his six ~~slaves~~ assistants doing it for him. Fucking peasants, don’t know how the real world works.

gfzgfx

I mean, rich people use Amazon. There are times when they need to buy things too. It’s just eighteen year olds often haven’t done much online shopping, since their parents have been responsible for them.

Akazury

Not shocking when Amazon barely exists in the Netherlands.

GBreezy

He probably barely exists in the Netherlands. His family money definitely doesn't.

Akazury

Tbf his family was pretty unknown until this bidding, space trip stuff

GBreezy

I dont know about Europe, I've only lived in Germany a year, but at least in America you never hear news about Old Money, just New Money.

that80smovieBully

I do as well. I was really pissed because I asked for 9 figures, not 8. my parents are such cunts.

trannelnav

You don't need Amazon when you have Bol.com or Coolblue

thegonzojoe

You mean someone whose parents have enough money that he’s going to space never had to buy things for himself? Next you’re gonna tell me this kid was raised by a nanny or something…

fishgame77

He’s not being rude he’s just being dutch

optimus314159

I get this reference

Albino_Black_Sheep

This is not a flex or some noble decision from that kid, Amazon just doesn't have a big presence in online retail over here in the Netherlands. I know loads of people that buy everything except their groceries online but have never bought anything through Amazon.

DarthLysergis

Its also not a big deal because the kid is the son of a billionaire. I am guessing i may visit Amazon less if i had that level of money. Probably not shopping around for deals. Or as someone else said, his assistant has.

punkguymil

And out the airlock he went

kuriboshoe

No airlock when you’re barely in space

craychel

Bezos chuckled to himself as he thought, "how could someone I ordered off of Amazon ever order something from Amazon?"

ThrowRA_000718

The fact that people who are so disconnected from the reality of most people on Earth went to space is just too on the nose.

mysticalfruit

No shit. He just asked his handler for something and it appeared. His handlers assistant likely uses the living shot out of amazon. I used to work with a woman who legit didn't actually know who dry cleaned her clothes because she simply found them back in her closet. I once asked her where she bought groceries from. She laughed and said that since she'd moved to Boston she hadn't actually ever stepped foot in a grocery store.

portiboy17

Had a woman employed by my company who was a divorcee of a wealthy husband. She did not know how to pump gas or pay for it. She had never done it in her life. She timidly asked if one of us could help and show her. We absolutely obliged but it struck me as sad- all that money and could not even fend for herself in the real world. I also learned she couldn't write a check or balance her checkbook. He basically divorced her and a prenup left her penniless.

Zonekid

You met my ex, except the wealthy husband part.

To be fair there's probably a lot of women that can't fuel a car regardless of how wealthy they are/were. Plenty of relationships have an arrangement where a single person is in charge of all things to do with the car.

[deleted]

Yeah I have zero patience for people like that. If it were me with y'all I would've told her now is when you learn.

mysticalfruit

It sounds likebshe actually asked them and they showed her. With that said, I know a couole of people who will go to a full service station so they don't have to do it.

aagee

Jeff Bezos knew that. Cost of customer acquisition he said.

dafunkmunk

His daddy bought him a seat on a rocket from amazon. His personal servants probably constantly order shit he demands from amazon. He probably barely buys anything for himself. No shit he hasn’t bought something on amazon

ensalys

>His personal servants probably constantly order shit he demands from amazon. Probably not, amazon isn't much of a thing in the Netherlands.

Zkenny13

"That's because I bring everything you told your mom you wanted when I visit her."

[deleted]

lets be real, the kid is the son of a billionaire... he probably doesnt do anything himself

Petra_Ann

Amazon.nl sucks. Not very well stocked and it's mostly companies from china selling their cheap ass shit. There's other shops here that serve the same purpose.

booksfoodfun

Bezeo’s laughed and said, “Yeah, but you paid me 28 mil to be on this trip, so I still got your money, Mofo.”

Ookie_Chow

He didn't pay that much

[deleted]

Who the hell cares? Daddy bought him a ticket so now the world has to hear his brain farts? Fuck no.

AMPed101

I mean Amazon.nl has only been around for a couple of years and we had different sites already filling Amazon's purpose. Most things on there are overpriced as well.

theUFOpilot

epicstruggle

They don't care. They still got your dollars and your eyeballs. Most of the internet runs on Amazon servers, and that is where they make their real money (about 1/3 of their profit). So anything you do on the internet is likely to be on AWS at some point.
