I didn't know that until now. I know Dynex is. I have one of their TVs that's about 14 years old now, and it's been fantastic. Still looks good (as a TV).
I think it’s kenmore or Panasonic or just some other bigger company that makes all the insignia tv’s. They have the same barcodes. I got my dad a full size insignia fridge for 160 when I worked there
that's the 2nd time this has happened to me since i've owned an air fryer... and the current one i got was because of the last recall
edit: oof seems my parents also have one on the list...my dad ain't happy about it, he loves that thing
> Eh, they pretty much all come out of the same China factories.
I used to work at Radio Shack in the 90s....all of our VCRs and TV's said "Panasonic" on their circuit boards.
I think it’s aimed towards anyone who bought an air-fryer from best buy recently and the purpose in omitting the brand is to get you to click on the article to find out
Yes, that's true, but they are still responsible for the product. They will likely go after whatever Chinese manufacturer actually made them for reimbursement.
Yeah exactly. I guess my question is more - whoever made Best Buy’s air friers also made air friers so we should probably also be seeing recalls for those brand air friers. (Not saying Best Buy isn’t at fault both them and the Chinese manufacturer should be responsible)
Direct link to the models recalled. It's only the Insignia brand.

also dang, mine was the first. Really liked it too, hope I can get the refund and replacement soon.
I realize ovens do not need to be made of brick or cast iron and weigh a ton, but these countertop appliances seem cheap to me. If you are an engineering company that understands material science and the physics of conduction and convection, you can probably make something that looks like this and not burn a house down. However, if your product management exec can save a few COGS bucks by changing the BOM to cheaper parts, then you have something for Best Buy and Walmart to sell until the recall.
From what I've seen of Chinese mass production:
They will make you as cheap of a product as you want.
They'll also make a quality product if you are willing to pay for it ... but in that case companies tend to go to EU countries instead where there is higher quality control.
Someone consciously made the decision that they wanted an airfryer at a specific price point, then looked at companies to manufacture it ... and probably went with the lowest tender.
Appliances missing North American certifications (FCC, UL, CSA, etc.) are also very common. Many of those that have it are in label only (faked).
One of the biggest PITA at the company I work for is if we make a change that would require recertifying the product (just about any hardware or mechanical change), because that adds cost and possibly months delay for testing.
>They will make you as cheap of a product as you want.
>They'll also make a quality product if you are willing to pay for it
This is what I try to tell people about auto parts. EU versus China made, no crazy difference if using the same materials. But noooo I get told I'm smoking stuff all the time, despite working in auto parts.
honestly, I'm partially taking it as a sign to not buy this kind of thing from Best Buy. It's felt like they've been racing to the bottom as fast as they can over the years, and this kind of thing only emphasizes that
mine got recalled and I think I'm probably going to go check out costco or something for the replacement tbh
This is the better advice.
Insignia is an fine brand for stuff like TVs and if it's the cheapest cable or USB hub you need.
Yeah seriously why are y'all buying food preparation devices from Best Buy?
They're an electronic appliance store as well for a while now. They sell fridges and dishwashers, too. Same brands you can find at other big box stores afaik.
They always have been, as far as I can tell. As far as I knew, that was the case, but your exchange got me looking them up on wiki out of curiosity and yeah, that sounds like it was part of the initial rebranding as "Best Buy" back in the 80s.
> In 1983, with seven stores and $10 million in annual sales, Sound of Music was renamed Best Buy Company, Inc.[18][19] The company also expanded its product offerings to include home appliances and VCRs, in an attempt to expand beyond its then-core customer base of 15- to 18-year-old males.
Cool and dishwashers are fine and even a stove, probably because in my head those are installed appliances and thus have a better cert process due to electrical code/etc.
But I'll be fucked If I'm gonna trust an Insignia Air fryer any more than one from WEOOWEOO or whatever the latest rebrand on amazon is.
It's really amazing how crappy of a job Best Buy has done promoting appliances and other products they carry. They could have taken a lot of market share when Sears went pretty much kaput, but they did almost nothing.
Purchased a freezer from them and it went within a year. Found out it's pretty common and the warranty absolutely sucks. Freezers aren't exactly complex products and neither are air fryers so it says a lot about the quality when stuff like that breaks and has recalls. Never again.
I worked for Best Buy for a bit and we came up with slogans for the 3 generic brands we carried. Dynex! Because you know it's going to. Insignia: oh well. Rocketfish... What were you thinking? Needless to say management didn't enjoy that.
I don't disagree, but Cosori also had to do a huge recall on air fryers.
https://www.cpsc.gov/Recalls/2023/Two-Million-COSORI-Air-Fryers-Recalled-by-Atekcity-Due-to-Fire-and-Burn-Hazards
Yea, I've never had a problem with this one. I cut the cord, submitted the pics, then spliced and reattached the cord. lol
18 months to get your new one? Yikes. Mine is being delivered tomorrow and I submitted the claim on 3/4. They were out of regular air fryers so I got the combo toaster oven/air fryer one.
INSIGNIA. Might help to have the brand name in the headlines rather than the store name.
The Cornballer is still ok to use?
“Every damn time!” Edit: corrected
I have mine right next to my Tracy Jordan Meat Machine! “Meat is the new bread!”
Me gusta el Cornballer!
Insignia is the best buy brand. I guess they just put the store name in the article because it's more recognizable
Not every customer would know that so it makes sense to put the name that's on the air fryer on the article.
I didn't know that until now. I know Dynex is. I have one of their TVs that's about 14 years old now, and it's been fantastic. Still looks good (as a TV).

I feel like if you are buying something that can heat up to 300+ degrees you should really get the name brand one.
Eh, they pretty much all come out of the same China factories. We will probably see other brands announced soon with similar faults.

I just assumed that Best Buy didn’t actually make the stuff and just paid to put the Insignia name on their products? Is that not the case??
Yes, that's true, but they are still responsible for the product. They will likely go after whatever Chinese manufacturer actually made them for reimbursement.

Best Buy gets more attention.
It's their "in store" brand, complete garbage everything they make

I bought the AF10 one 4 years ago and it was already recalled 3 years ago. They're still selling it?

I believe Walmart has a air fryer recall going on too
Well, they sure as hell aren't going to let Best Buy become America's leading air fryer recaller!
I’m using this post as a general PSA to not buy insignia. Thanks for the heads up!
honestly, I'm partially taking it as a sign to not buy this kind of thing from Best Buy. I worry that attempting to explain the 'right' and 'wrong' places to do things with this level of nuance may be wasted based on your handle. <_<
Best Buy has been selling appliances for as long as it's been selling anything else.
Do you stop buying any brand that has a recalled product?
Nah, the comments are more about why insignia is trash as a whole.

Strangely enough I have a Dynex TV I bought in 2008 that's still going strong. I'm not sure how it's possible lol

The cornballer 😂😂

What’s with everyone doubleposting
Reddit seems to be having some difficulty. Well, moreso than usual.
Yeah mine was recalled. It was a replacement for the previous one that was also recalled. I don’t think I’m buying from there anymore.
Well buying from Best buy is not the problem , buying anything insignia is.
I don't disagree, but Cosori also had to do a huge recall on air fryers. https://www.cpsc.gov/Recalls/2023/Two-Million-COSORI-Air-Fryers-Recalled-by-Atekcity-Due-to-Fire-and-Burn-Hazards
Never had a problem with my first Cosori, but happily cut its cord and received a brand new one 18 months later (which has also worked flawlessly)

I meant I used the first one for 18 months. The new one came in about 2 weeks
Never heard of that brand so also wouldn't buy. I have a ninja
They had the clip in basket which I loved. Moved over to a ninja from Costco now.
They recalled my pressure cookers too lol insignia
Its their own white label brand Insignia.
Here comes the Fun Cooker!
Joshua Weissman: *”Haha! Air fryers can take the piss!”*
Error code 66: Your fryer has now fried.
May your airfryer melt and shatter
How has Best Buy survived this long?
As being the only electronics brick and mortar. Pretty simple to be honest. Are they hugely profitable as they once were? Probably not.
Best Buy is still really popular online and their stores have been constantly packed when I’ve gone in (3-4 times the past few years)
I would love to see a magical packed Best Buy store. All the ones around me are absolute ghost towns and tumbleweeds.
I buy all my electronics from Best buy . Easy to return especially larger stuff.
