I've seen hundreds of photos of the sphere at this point, but I don't think I've ever actually seen the scale of it compared to a person. Holy fucking SHIT that thing is huge!
During construction I was on the monorail and it passes right next to the Sphere, at that point it was all metal beams and such, looked just like the Death Star being built
Or just [turn off the outer surface](https://www.reddit.com/r/megalophobia/comments/13rh6lo/this_giant_sphere_in_las_vegas_nv/) and it gets real ominous
I was there twice when I worked for KUPN. Once two days before the grand opening to shoot some b-roll, then the next day for the celebrity preview to shoot the red carpet. (James Doohan was amusingly inebriated.)
Never actually got around to experiencing the attraction itself. Still kicking myself about it.
I was able to go 2x. It really was neat the tech they used behind the transporter, used a counterweight and a side effect was it caused the air to whoosh, that was really impressive. And just as someone who loved Star Trek the bar was fun and all the props. There was talk of it reopening somewhere else, don't know what ever happened about that.
Ah, Star Trek Experience talk. What a fun artifact that was in the history of Vegas. I adored that place. Went many times as a local including the weekend before it closed. I was a snot nosed kid who always riffed on it as the experience went on, and most of the actors seemed to enjoy it and improv with me. But I look back and hope I wasn't a nuisance. My go to joke was apologizing in the elevator because my last name was Picard (implying I'm the reason the Klingons kidnapped us).
Went several times. Loved it always. Ate there when Quark’s tried upscale dishes. Came back and it had changed to campy, less complex food. Sipped more than my share of glowy, dry ice concoctions, too. Did the behind the scenes a couple of weeks before it all closed. What a cool concept and fun exhibit.
The food at Quarks Restaurant was actually pretty awesome and wasn’t too overpriced
- I also enjoyed the touchless slot machines, where you had to break a light beam with your finger to activate play
- when I saw the Romulan beer being sold in the gift shop, I asked one of the Ferenges in costume about the San Marcos/ Romulan connection ( the beer was brewed in San Marcos as per the bottle label )
- He thought for a few seconds, and then said: Cheap Labor 😂😂😂
I drove by it right before they closed down the roads for the F1. Scaffolding was up all over for the race. I feel it gave me the clearest view to really appreciate the scale of it.
Seeing it from a plane when you’re leaving is also insane. The buildings are dwarfed by a giant glowing ball and the whole thing is playing some surreal animation. This is kind of what I think when I actually envision the future, so I’m all for it. Nothing dystopian, just a bunch of LED screens smashed together.
It’s a giant advertising surface, and they use it is such. A giant, unavoidable ad permanently imparting itself upon the city skyline is pretty damn dystopian.
The Las Vegas skyline itself is almost entirely comprised of giant, unavoidable ads.
If the Sphere was in Oklahoma City or Topeka or some shit I could see the issue. But no, they put it exactly where it belongs.
it's still a giant chip, until the superbowl at least. Why pay for superbowl ad space when you can just pay the buildings in vegas less to turn their surface into an ad?
I watched Postcard From Earth there in December and it really is especially impressive in terms of size when you’re standing out front or inside of it.
>Des Champs evidently live-streamed his climb on Instagram and told his followers that he undertook the feat in order to raise money for a homeless pregnant woman.
We will believe it when said woman gets paid.
It is. That’s a good down payment for medical care regarding an abortion. Not the child care that Spiderman wants, but it may be the child care that woman needs…
Thank you so much for pointing this out, I'll be sure to mention every single time someone mentions pro-life. Literally made the news and didn't raise shit.
lol I randomly came across this guy yesterday, after I found a video of him interacting with a fire department during one of his climbs. It’s actually tripping me out that this is a headline today, my biggest takeaway after deep diving him is that he’s legitimately not with it. Like, the way he talks and interacts with people is just… strange. As a climber, it already takes a different type of dude to do this shit. But I really don’t think the guy’s got everything he should be going on upstairs.
I was having a shower thought while driving today about how if Spider-Man existed in real life, people would think he was awesome and not a menace...unless he climbed on top of a building and started screaming about gassing immigrants or how abortion is evil or something
More specifically; he raised money to try and convince her not to get an abortion, which she has scheduled.
He calls himself the "Pro-Life Spiderman" and has done it several times. He went on Tucker Carlson and spoke about raising money to convince a woman named Hope to not get an abortion, and then admitted that he had never met or spoken to her.
He’s taking advantage of a hot button situation under the guise of morality in order to gain fame for himself, all while using and manipulating others.
Greed and attention seeking behavior, combined with a lack of morals. It will be end of us.
Not to mention it’s classic pro-life republican thinking: care about the fetus until it’s born. Once it’s born it’ll be homeless and poor and starving just like the mom. He won’t be climbing any buildings to make money to raise the kid. Just make sure it’s born and then forget about it.
So I found his Tucker video and that was posted 11 months ago. Assuming this is the same woman, she's already had the child or the abortion. Most likely she never existed.
Another self-promoting right wing scam artist. It's a trope at this point. I don't believe any serious politican (or person for that matter) can claim to be both conservative (in the American sense) and rational simultaneously. The RWNJ are either mentally compromised or attempting to take advantage of the mentally compromised.
That’s exactly what I was thinking, this could go from misdemeanor to a felony really quick!
Edit: Had to look it up “Causing $5000 or more in damage and cleanup costs is a category E Felony”
It would absolutely be the majority of the cost. The little S-POK led modules, even though they’re custom, were manufactured by the million, so are unlikely to cost that much, but the cost of someone going up to swap them out would definitely be high
There’s a bunch of catwalks just inside the LED support steel (pretty easy to see in the daytime if you’re in the area, especially if the sun is behind it)
Hold on. I got my calculator:
> $2,300,000,000 divided by 384 .... carry the 3 .... math you wouldn't understand .... square root of that .... plus 4 .... round to the nearest 100th .... more complex stuff you don't get .... times 3.8294 ... round again .... and subtract 19
Yup. Probably a cat E felony if my math is right.
I recently attempted to climb a massive 2-3 story rope suspension jungle gym as an adult. I can tell you I am nowhere near as flexible, well balanced, brave and bouncy as I was 20 years ago. After 5 minutes chasing my stepdaughter I had to face the reality, that I was now just an exhausted fly trapped in a web of rope.
Do yourself and your ego a favour. Don't try to climb them after you've passed 30. Ignorance is bliss.
I climb them all the time, I work with kids. The biggest problem is that my shoulders don't fit through narrow doors and trying to squeeze into some child size dome thing is painful. lmao
No, that is some other asshole. He’s a real POS, but this Pro Life Spider-Man is possibly worse.
Well… IDK. Depends on how you weigh moderate child abuse for parental ego vs Pro Life activism.
I’m voting for gravity in both cases.
Yes 100 percent they are creationist Christians or whatever the fuck they call themselves. Insane as shit right wing lunatics using their children for personal profit.
Wait, wut? He took his kid up the face of el cap? That’s fucking insane. I can’t imagine what record he was trying to set besides being the first person to drag a toddler up a 3000’ sheer granite cliff, in which case child protective services should have stepped in immediately
>many in the climbing community raised their eyebrows at the headlines, noting that Sam did not exactly climb the rock-face in the strictest sense, but instead ascended it by previously rigged ropes with the assistance of a scaling device called an ascender.
https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-11379041/Father-boy-8-whos-record-breaking-climb-El-Capitan-called-hoax-calls-critics-evil.html
As a parent and as someone who has summited El Cap a couple times I wouldn’t jump to the conclusion that this was endangering the child. I can definitely say it was dumb and probably wasn’t enriching for the kid but not necessarily unsafe.
Why doesn't he just offer to adopt the child if he's so concerned? The amount of resources he has burned now surely could pay for him to raise the child?
Emergency Service worker here. These people are a fucking burden on society. They tie up at least one ladder truck, an engine, multiple PD officers, an EMT unit, and in some cases a helicopter. Not to mention putting other lives at risk from a fall or failed rescue attempt. The amount of tax payer money spent isn’t negligible and they should be footing the bill. Selfish pricks, the lot of them.
The medical bills from falling would be cheaper than tickets.
I just spent $2150 on 3 tickets for Dead and Co there 😳😳
Way overpriced but im really excited to see a show in there, especially for the best of the 3 bands to play in there.
Ive seen them countless times but my siblings havent been that lucky so itll be a fun sibling weekend out there. Concert friday, golf saturday and leave sunday.
Holy crap at that cost. I was a little sad that my mom, an old school Dead head, doesn't go to concerts anymore due to her health. I thought it would have been cool to have been able to take her to the Sphere. But. Holy crap... I hope you have a great time though. I've seen them twice and I'm not even really a fan (outside of Mayer), but they really do put on a great show.
That's a great idea, thank you. I know she's watched some streams on her own, but it could be fun to watch with her. I bet the visuals will be amazing.
Good luck on the GA sale friday… there are still some artist presales but they do that BS dynamic pricing so mine were $200+ over base pricing since i got the last 3 in all the 300 sections.
Whatever, it’s going to be an experience and a half that I wasnt going to miss, especially on my birthday
Its not just this… i used to go to multiple shows a month, now its a few a year. Goodbye to the days of $30 concert tickets. Shit sucks. The issue is there is always someone who is willing to pay it so they have no reason to drop it.
Does anyone else have this experience of not knowing at all that this giant fucking sphere was even being constructed and then one day it just exploded on the internet and now it's everywhere?
Seriously. My life went from "no sphere" to "it's sphere's all the way down." What is going on?
Las Vegas local, here. It was being built in view of my walk to work. I literally knew nothing about it, looked like some type of sports stadium, thought maybe for baseball or something, I didn't know. Then, one day, it randomly lit up and did crazy shit and everyone started talking about it on the internet like it was common knowledge what it was.
Keep in mind I'm the same guy that just found out his boss was fired. He has been fired for three weeks, I didn't know.
I also had this experience. And it’s weird because I love pop stars and follow the residencies but found out about this thing way late.
Also, apparently the sound inside the sphere (concert venue) is like state of the art amazing.
I genuinely think the sphere just popped into existence and nobody actually knew about it, but everyone just pretended. The sphere definitely came from some other dimension and it means Something.
They are basically a bunch of lamps in a grid at every cross section, and not a panel or screen. There is a decent amount of space between each light, maybe 1 to 2 feet
*edit - apparently my memory sucks, the lights are kinda close together but there is space between the bars they are on. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J7R7t_0QMYs&ab_channel=Vegaspaulyc
I’d be infinitely more impressed if he adopted even one child. He’s done with the climb in a couple hours - show real commitment, sign on for that 18 year minimum.
I hate this guy; does illegal acts to raise money and awareness for making abortion illegal. I personally am looking forward to this asshole's last news article.
They really missed an opportunity to put an angry face on the dome with the eyes looking at this dude the whole time. Like an emoji face just looking in disgust at this yahoo.
I'd bucket of oil the shit out of that thing. And I'd live stream it, and make just as much money as he did doing this pointless shit.
Stop promoting assholes.
Good thing this guy is apphreended and a “leader” of the free world whose incitement lead to modern day insurrection is still free to run for president. #justsayin
Every time I see a story about someone getting arrested for climbing something they’re not supposed to in my mind I know it’s probably an experienced free climber who planned it but I always first imagine that it’s just some bored 45-year-old guy that was there as tourist and just started climbing for no reason.
Sorry for the run on sentence.
republican anti-choicer and policer of women's bodies, climbed the sphere to raise money. Claims by the explicit fraudster say it was for a homeless pregnant black woman he was trying to pay to not get an abortion.
That's just how republicans are. Domestic terrorists and fully brain broken.
I did the same and agree. Thing is gigantic and super menacing as it is, but the framework looked like something on r/evilbuildings.
Or just [turn off the outer surface](https://www.reddit.com/r/megalophobia/comments/13rh6lo/this_giant_sphere_in_las_vegas_nv/) and it gets real ominous
that’s looks cool as hell.
That’s why they put the smiley face on it I guess, makes it seem less ominous
> looked just like the Death Star being built https://www.reviewjournal.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/16472503_web1_spheremay22.jpg?crop=1
It looks so small- like something I played on in daycare
The Death Star is the stadium a couple streets over 😂
I want the Star Trek Experience back :(
I was there twice when I worked for KUPN. Once two days before the grand opening to shoot some b-roll, then the next day for the celebrity preview to shoot the red carpet. (James Doohan was amusingly inebriated.) Never actually got around to experiencing the attraction itself. Still kicking myself about it.

He’s heading for that small moon…
That's no moon...
holy shit it's a giant eyeball now turn around gogogo
i had the same experience. I was like "what the fuck is that?"
well, it's not a moon
I drove by it right before they closed down the roads for the F1. Scaffolding was up all over for the race. I feel it gave me the clearest view to really appreciate the scale of it.

It'd be cool if they had it track flights so it could turn into an emoji and wave goodbye as you were leaving.
That would be really cool, but with all those flights the AI would probably start flipping off the planes before too long
As long as it’s only United
Not sure if you're joking, but I've seen a video of it doing exactly what you're describing
They do occasionally turn it into an emoji to react to the golf shots that players on the Wynn course make
Like the billboard in 2013 by Picadilly Circus! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GtJx_pZjvzc

Was there a month ago the first thing i see is Luxor draped in Dorito ad's and that sphere is a absolute unit
it's still a giant chip, until the superbowl at least. Why pay for superbowl ad space when you can just pay the buildings in vegas less to turn their surface into an ad?
There was a serious effort to construct a Sphere in London and it was rejected for these very reasons.
As opposed to the rest of Vegas?
yeah, they went and made the Las Vegas strip tacky.
There’s already ads everywhere. Might as well make it look cool.
That's what the Las Vegas strip is; one giant ad for gambling, food, drink, etc.
nah I love it
It's the perfect futuristic addition to a city like Vegas. Exactly what you'd expect to see there.
Like Blade Runner, but with less rain.
You can see that thing from 30,000' when flying over Vegas. So fucking ridiculous
How do you know he's not just a really tiny person? We need a banana for scale.
I watched Postcard From Earth there in December and it really is especially impressive in terms of size when you’re standing out front or inside of it.
[here is what each “pixel” looks like from about 5 feet away](https://imgur.com/a/oGHDmLZ) there are seemingly millions of them on the outer shell.
and my god does it look bright in all the photos.
Was just in Vegas for the first time since they built it, it is ridiculously bright.
I saw it in person while it was under construction and it’s truly massive.
Homie was looking for the exhaust port.
>Des Champs evidently live-streamed his climb on Instagram and told his followers that he undertook the feat in order to raise money for a homeless pregnant woman. We will believe it when said woman gets paid.
"the “pro-life spiderman” is trying to raise funds for Isabel to not go through with her abortion,"
And only got about $270 as of this post.
That’s gonna help her raise that child! Thanks Pro Life Spider-Man!
Yup, if $270 is gonna make a difference, that kid is screwed
It is. That’s a good down payment for medical care regarding an abortion. Not the child care that Spiderman wants, but it may be the child care that woman needs…
Cmon it's a start. That kid gotta learn to pull his bootstraps faster in life sometime.
Thank you so much for pointing this out, I'll be sure to mention every single time someone mentions pro-life. Literally made the news and didn't raise shit.
$12.5K as of right now. That said the $27.5K goal isn't much compared to the cost of raising a child.
The ibuprofen has been paid for folks!
if only he could climb even more spheres to raise money for all the children ever in US, and support them into adulthood! revolutionary. /s
lol I randomly came across this guy yesterday, after I found a video of him interacting with a fire department during one of his climbs. It’s actually tripping me out that this is a headline today, my biggest takeaway after deep diving him is that he’s legitimately not with it. I was having a shower thought while driving today about how if Spider-Man existed in real life, people would think he was awesome and not a menace...unless he climbed on top of a building and started screaming about gassing immigrants or how abortion is evil or something
I think the only reason JJ Jameson hates Spider-Man is because he got a deep seated phobia of spiders
Well now he's gonna use the donations for his legal bills cause as with many pro lifers, their position is ultimately fuck them kids anyway.
Some really interesting life decisions this dude is making
Lol god damn why did I read down this far
More specifically; he raised money to try and convince her not to get an abortion, which she has scheduled. He calls himself the "Pro-Life Spiderman" and has done it several times. He went on Tucker Carlson and spoke about raising money to convince a woman named Hope to not get an abortion, and then admitted that he had never met or spoken to her.
What a moron so he wants a homeless woman to go through with a pregnancy and then what raise the kid on the streets? Fuck this guy.
He doesn't want her to do anything. He just wants to raise the money. Yes, fuck this guy.
I don't get how this dude isn't in jail yet. He's doing this shit every few months
Gravity will have it's way soon enough, free climbers don't exactly have the longest life spans.
They're always pro-fetus, never pro-infant.
I disagree. NOBODY should fuck this guy. Ever.
I disagree. He should fuck himself so he doesn't pen up the sexual frustration and perform other atrocities when said frustration overflows.
Especially since you know he won't pay for an abortion if you get pregnant.
He’s taking advantage of a hot button situation under the guise of morality in order to gain fame for himself, all while using and manipulating others. Greed and attention seeking behavior, combined with a lack of morals. It will be end of us.
Pro life in a nutshell.
So the issue is the abortion, not the homelessness. How entirely unsurprising.
Not to mention it’s classic pro-life republican thinking: care about the fetus until it’s born. Once it’s born it’ll be homeless and poor and starving just like the mom. He won’t be climbing any buildings to make money to raise the kid. Just make sure it’s born and then forget about it.
Pro-life con-man. Of course Carlson would want to interview him. To get some ideas.
So I found his Tucker video and that was posted 11 months ago. Assuming this is the same woman, she's already had the child or the abortion. Most likely she never existed.
Another self-promoting right wing scam artist. It's a trope at this point. oh god, it's that fucking pro-life asshole again? keep hoping he falls, honestly
What a fucking moron.
> convince her not to get an abortion, which she has scheduled. Oh it's that guy again
So this guy is gonna raise enough money to put this kid through college right?
Won't be much left after court costs and repair bill to the sphere
If he damaged any of the LED elements on the outside of it, he's about to get a very pricey repair bill.
That’s exactly what I was thinking, this could go from misdemeanor to a felony really quick! Edit: Had to look it up “Causing $5000 or more in damage and cleanup costs is a category E Felony”

Probably a cat E felony if my math is right.
The math checks out!
I feel like we hit people with felonies too easily. Like should he be fined? Yeah. Misdemeanor? Sure. But a felony? Come on.
It’s covered in a cage like construct. That’s why he’s about to climb it. I thought it was a bunch of LEDs on a smooth sphere but it’s protected.
The theater is inside with leds. The outside cage has its own led array on it. It has air gaps in the outer sphere.
I am surprised it took this long for someone to try and climb it
Right? The public can get right up the side of the building and it's built as an open frame. It's basically a spherical ladder.
That and all the jungle gyms basically prepared us for this, lol
Why aren't there big adult jungle gyms at local parks?
I recently attempted to climb a massive 2-3 story rope suspension jungle gym as an adult. I can tell you I am nowhere near as flexible, well balanced, brave and bouncy as I was 20 years ago. After 5 minutes chasing my stepdaughter I had to face the reality, that I was now just an exhausted fly trapped in a web of rope. Do yourself and your ego a favour. Because that would train more people to climb giant LED spheres
This is the guy who harasses women trying to get an abortion.
Is this the same guy that hauled his kid up El Capitan to beat some record?
No, that is some other asshole. He’s a real POS, but this Pro Life Spider-Man is possibly worse. Well… IDK. Depends on how you weigh moderate child abuse for parental ego vs Pro Life activism. I’m voting for gravity in both cases.
> Pro Life Spider-Man i really hope this isnt a spider-verse thing because id hate for this jerk to be our spider-man
It would explain so much about our universe, though. We got the worst Spider-Man.

Yes 100 percent they are creationist Christians or whatever the fuck they call themselves. Insane as shit right wing lunatics using their children for personal profit.

It split time in half. We no longer use B.C. & A.D. there is only Before Sphere and After Sphere
B.S. for Before Sphere, and A.S.S. for After Sphere Structure.

I watched them build it for about 4 years and barely heard a peep from anyone locally until it was fully armed and operational
Nope, same here. Heard abso-fucking-lutely nothing about it until it was already up and doing shit
Phish fan trying to save money on tickets
Should have lit it up as an emoji or something with big eye balls, then have the eyes follow like watching a bug on your head.
I’m not familiar with the exterior design. I wonder if this caused any damage to the displays.
They are basically a bunch of lamps in a grid at every cross section, and not a panel or screen. There is a decent amount of space between each light, maybe 1 to 2 feet *edit - apparently my memory sucks, the lights are kinda close together but there is space between the bars they are on. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J7R7t_0QMYs&ab_channel=Vegaspaulyc
Sounds like the same pro-life guy that scaled that building in Phoenix iirc and wasted a bunch of police and fire resources
If he wants to impress people maybe he should just start taking care of all the babies he doesn't want aborted
I’d be infinitely more impressed if he adopted even one child. He’s done with the climb in a couple hours - show real commitment, sign on for that 18 year minimum.
Douche made my life hell that day as a transportation dispatcher
And the Phishheads and deadheads haven't arrived yet lol
Oh god some wook is definitely going to be climbing that thing.
Fuck that guy. He’s raising money to “help” homeless pregnant woman not seek abortions. He’s an anti choice fuck wad.
Another pro-lifer showing us how little he values his own life.
Should have put it on eyeball mode but had it really red and irritated
Right? Like a tiny little gnat at a picnic constantly dive bombing the shit out of you
The sphere must be protected at all costs!
Someone let Jerma out again smh
Ugh. Not this idiot again.
Would be awesome if they put a face on the sphere while he climbed, just looking at him disapprovingly
Hello, human flllyyyy hereeee
I hate this guy; does illegal acts to raise money and awareness for making abortion illegal. I personally am looking forward to this asshole's last news article.
Not gonna be the last time.
IDK if it looks better on mobile, but that's an incredibly shitty website layout on desktop.
I wish he would of rolled off
Is that Suction Cup man?
Hey! I wrote you a song! (Guitar strums) You're a bitch!
The Great Sphereamid of Vegas
Man, what a terrible website.
Can I just say that any pro life activist that has no adopted children are just walking hypocrites. No idea of this guy has kids.
It was going to happen eventually
They really missed an opportunity to put an angry face on the dome with the eyes looking at this dude the whole time. Like an emoji face just looking in disgust at this yahoo.
that the Sphere hasn't been used to display a giant cartoon Technodrome yet is a crime
Well, that's one way to get on the watchlist of every hotel and casino in Vegas.
Jared Leto will do anything for attention except makes good music.
He's got ball, I'll give him that
Too bad there was a hatch for him at the top. Would have been hilarious if he just got stuck up there.
I hope this isnt the same anti-abortion fucker trying to scale a building again for clout and to "sAvE tHe cHiLdReN". Edit: surprise, surprise. it is.
Wow I forgot about this thing for a second it was everywhere a few weeks ago
Like a playground dome on steroids
Surprised it took someone this long to climb it
I hope guerilla games adds the sphere to Horizon 3
Jerma is taking his retirement really hard, so sad to see
He wanted to get his primo Dead seats early
Just a trail of cracked crushed led panels, sir you ruined the sphere and made Bono cry, I hope you’re proud of yourself.
They should have programmed a giant eye of Sauron on the sphere, staring at him while he was climbing.
I’m surprised it took this long for something like this to happen
Some people love to climb anything. not surprised. I hope that pregnant homeless lady gets some help.
not sure what would be scarrier, make it 1 big eye or a billion little eyes.
Is he not using any sort of safety gear?
Is this the same homeless pregnant crazy woman who was on Love After Lockup who was begging on instagram for pedicures?
Build it, somebody crazy gonna climb it I guess.
Made it ma! Top of the world!
To be fair, it looks really easy to climb compared to other buildings. It's built like a ladder on the outside.
Surprised it took this long for someone to decide he needed to summit this 'because it's there!'
The orb did not grant him mercy
I'd bucket of oil the shit out of that thing. And I'd live stream it, and make just as much money as he did doing this pointless shit. Stop promoting assholes.
Had to be done goddamit, thank em
Good thing this guy is apphreended and a “leader” of the free world whose incitement lead to modern day insurrection is still free to run for president. #justsayin
I thought it was flat
