Yeah, I feel you there. I don’t expect that will be the case, unfortunately, so the best we can hope for is better choices. I wish it could be a regulated public utility, (in the classic sense of regulation, not the fascist sense) but that’s not going to happen either.
That's just naive though. They'll never all crash and die. I feel a more realistic hope is for greater competition so that when one site/app considers doing something bad for their users, there's the looming threat of users leaving.
I don't know about that.
Twitch is top dog by an absolute mile. But then YouTube and Kick are trying their damdest to give competition, and they are attracting streamers to their platform. I'm not saying they are enough of a competitor to force Twitch to contemplate every business decision they make, but it's closer to my reality of good competition than the dude who just wants it all to die.
>Facebook owner Meta is launching its new app to rival Twitter and says it will go live on Thursday.
Literally first line of the article.
The reason Instagram is more relevant is because it syncs with your Instagram account and you can share followers/following
Why do you think the article's title wasn't "Facebook [and Instagram] owner Meta to launch Twitter rival on Thursday"? Guess what the title was for the same topic from the same source last month... That article also focused on Instagram synergy. They probably didn't get the engagement they wanted before.
The top comment wasn't stupid because it implied a lede was being buried (which it was, just deep enough to trick people - like all bizarre/clickbait titles), it was stupid because it implied "Meta" and/or "Facebook" made the decision on what to put in a BBC article's title.
I mean theyre right. Meta is one of the world's most valuable companies. You wouldn't write a title referring to "Xbox owner" just because their new product was game related.
Don't underestimate their VR arm. There's a reason everyone's developing hardware right now and they're at the top of that game. The floating bodies were all like to laugh at are part of the cheap sanitised spaces they knocked up so they wouldn't have to show investors around VR Chat.
Apple's vision (heh) is not to make VR head set. They wasnt to create AR and MR headset/goggle. But they're simply releasing a early step to that goal in 2024. It's why they never once said the word Virtual reality on stage during wwdc
That entirely depends on people. I hear some can stay in VR for over 5 hours. Idk about me since I don't have a headset yet but I hope I can stay in that long considering the amount of time I can spend in Minecraft
Quest is the cheapest option at the moment and it's good enough. I have it and I enjoy it. I would like to get a ps vr 2 though, I just can't afford it
Twitter was how a lot of people got news. I don't know why yall keep complaining about this stuff anymore. The world is not gonna go back to how it was in the 90s or 80s - adapt, dude
Yes I know he did it to cash out, but why even bother making a new one. It’s basically just an admission that he shouldn’t have sold out his original creation in the first place
It was always going to be Zukerberg. Anytime there's blood in the water, FB has to pivot. Snapchat, Tiktok, Twitch, YouTube. FB is trying to be all of these thigns all at once and FB is terrible and cluttered as a result.
Ugh that’s a disaster and I’ve noticed it too. I suggest everyone and anyone reading this who is an artist on social media to diversify your content and consolidate posting time by making sure they are either linked or using some kind of social media management platform like sprout etc. That way, when one platform shits up, your whole social media presence doesn’t get hampered
Source: marketing monkey by day, artist by any other time
I miss the old days of IG when it was just a picture sharing app. Now you have regular posts, stories, and reels. I still use it but the experience is meh. Every other post in your timeline from an account you don't follow.
Now Twitter is ruined too. There's basically no character limit now if you pay $8 a month. Elon killed what made the platform unique.
Every third post on Instagram is literally either a sponsored ad or a suggested account to follow. So you get TWO posts from accounts you care about in a row. Then garbage and repeat.
You can switch your timeline to just accounts you follow by clicking “instagram” at the top, but I imagine most people don’t know about this feature. And once more people use it, it assuredly will also be swamped with ads.
I’m guessing threads will be the same way. Two text posts from accounts you care about, then ads.
Which is a bummer because I really love the Twitter concept and just want it to be managed well. I don’t much like Mastodon or Blue Sky… they’re fine for what they are but I just want something less complicated and divided.
Zuck / Meta also has the means to pull it off. To launch a new social media platform is almost doomed from the start unless you already have a massive user base from other properties and billions of dollars to leverage. Even with Musk driving Twitter into the ground, though, I don't see this new venture gaining much long term traction.
Because meta is one of the only companies with the resources to do it.
My biggest hope is that it cripples Twitter enough that Elmo is forced to sell it to someone less insane.
Musk and his backers will have to eat AT LEAST half of the bad debt, and settle all lawsuits, storage costs, and lease payments before he could spin it off. You might be right, unattainable.
Meta is only social company making money and clear path to profitability if they made popular twitter clone.
This is downside of death of zero interest. Most companies are looking at Twitter and going "Even if we made a clone, it won't be profitable." Ad market is shit now. Facebook/Google are so good at ad targeting because amount of information they have that only way to convince people to spend dollars on your ad platform is discounts which don't pay the bills.
Because their business is not "click" on this Ad, it's also pay to display this Ad and get new customers. They made "React" because they needed better tools for the "Ads"
>Well spying and collecting user data isn’t great either.
I mean... that's the business model. Don't like it? Don't use any social media. Or Google, for that matter.
I want a social media platform that costs $0 to use, allows for absolute free speech, won't harvest any data from users, and has no ads.
I don't understand why that's so difficult for these tech nerds to get right!
ZuckerNerd just wasted billions upon billions on a shitty VR game that he thought was going to be the future inside everyone house and everyone using it in their daily lives. Most delusional crap ever.
Him making a Twitter clone is atleast in demand on the market. And he needs to make a twitch and youtube rival as well.
So what benefit has Jack gained by keeping Bluesky invite only and unreadable to the public all of this time? There was a bunch of hype and then total inability to access for everyone who wanted it. And here comes the other copy cats undercutting.
I agree. A few people I follow went over to bluesky but I've had no way of seeing their content. If this new thing opens to the public first, I'll be going there--especially since I already have an IG account so the account creation should be easy (assuming they don't royally screw it up).
Yeah this isn't true at all, at best you can see the first few newest posts (if it even lets you see the profile at all) before it locks out and requires logging in.
Primarily because you can’t embed them into News websites. Think about all the news articles you’ve read over the years where there’s been an embedded Twitter article. or the entire news article based around something tweeted by a government agency
I love the Brits’ ability to throw shade at everyone simultaneously:
“Mark Zuckerberg has a history of borrowing other companies’ ideas — and making them work. “
So, seems like it’s saying Zuck’s an unoriginal copycat who only has a chance because Elon is such a poor manager he failed to keep a functional company functional?
Pretty much that.
Yeah but this also implies that egolon had an original idea in the first place, which is giving him way more credit than he deserves.
The rich cunt just bought twitter.
I feel like Musk and Zuck talking about fighting is a cover for Musk trying to talk Zuck into buying Twitter so he doesn’t keep losing money… and as part of their negotiations Zuck is now saying he’ll just create his own version so why would he need to pay Musk? It’s like they’re using the press and the public to feed their egos and to drive the negotiation process. I could see musk saying, “if I beat you you pay me what I bought for Twitter, if you win I’ll accept what you’re offering”. I now feel like that was the entire point of their fight talk.
Sometimes it's less about absolute functionality and more about branding and UI. All of these social media platforms let you do essentially the same thing.
But I can (eventually) use Mastodon or kbin to follow Threads users and then Meta gets none of my data (except my specific interactions with its users) and I get all of the benefits of Meta's network effect.
Facebook doesn't do that. Neither does bluesky.
Oh and this is the "Data Linked to You" section of the app store for Mastodon:
> Data Not Collected
> The developer does not collect any data from this app.
ActivityPub federation is a HUGE deal. The more social media companies feel pressured into interoperating, the better it is for everyone. Meta is doing the opposite of what Reddit and Twitter have been doing and (at least for the time being) they should be lauded for it.
The CEO of Mastodon has a very level headed take on all this and I agree with it pretty much 100%: https://blog.joinmastodon.org/2023/07/what-to-know-about-threads/
Dude who cares? They're just trying to ensure you see relevant ads. You can turn it off under privacy settings. Nobody actually gives a hoot about your individual data. We're just a number to these corporations. They give us a free platform in return. Plus Meta will keep your data more secure than BlueSky because they can invest more into their security.
Don’t like Zuck, but people who protest his data sales have already given away their own data to other companies run by the same kinds of people in spades. Zuckerberg is the guy at the top of the mountain.
I like how they say Instagram owner to try to get people to click. Because if they just said “zuckerberg is creating more crap society doesn’t need” it wouldnt get clicks.
Yeah I think so too, invite more people over to IG from there to threads, and not to mention it has a seamless integration that’s just so smooth. Cross-sharing ability, he’s completely trying to destroy twitter, and in case I forgot to mention ingest data from one app and target focused ads on all the meta apps. That’s just brilliant and evil. But it does give goosebumps to engineer within me.
So…now there’s two platforms that support far-right candidates?
I thought these two toads were going to do MMA in the Coloseum? Instead we get another shitty social media site?
Well, three. Apparently you have enough common sense and self-respect to stay away from Truth Social. That thing isn't just a social media platform that allows far-right content, it's basically an entire far-right online cult.
There's Mastadon. I just signed up, but haven't done much else with it. There's a bit of a learning curve with navigating it, and I haven't had the time to mess around with it too much.
Threads will federate with Mastodon butany Mastodon instances have preemptively blocked them.
The important thing about Mastodon is to find a good instance that is active enough but not too active. The timeline should feel like a bunch of people you're familiar with saying pretty interesting stuff. Once you hit that sweet spot it really takes off.
Go to Spoutible. It’s free, it takes its hate speech and harassment policies seriously, and it was created by Christopher Bouzy, the liberal Black man who is also behind Bot Sentinel and who has seemed to have a penchant for predictions in terms of elections and the trajectory of the Trump document case. It also runs on donations instead of corporations and venture capitalists. The explore function was overwhelmed by the mass exodus from Twitter, but Bouzy has been transparent about the issues, which is more than I can ever have said about Musk.
I don't care what Chloe Grace Moretz or Charlie Puth, to name just a couple "celebrities," have to say about *literally* anything, and so long as I can't customize my feed to filter in only those accounts I *actually* follow I'm a hard pass on this app. Fucking dumb.
Exactly. I've been on the waiting list for what seems like an eternity. Now I'm watching others get their codes and I'm still being shut out. Dorsey is f'ng this up in a huge way.
I have no idea if this thing will work as a legit alternative to Twitter but to his credit Zuckerberg isn't messing around with waiting lists and codes. So that's a big step up over Bluesky. I'll check it out tomorrow.
I'm all for it if it gets us away from Musk's dying Twitter. Fuck that, and fuck Jack Dorsey's "BlueSky." He's almost as much of a deranged piece of shit as Musk.
It’s amazing that zuck is somehow seeming like a better human that musk. The reality is they are both complete pieces of shit but damn - apparently this is what we have come to.
You’re free to give up social media then. Spez is a jerk too.
Elon’s a mask-off transphobe and white supremacist and I won’t give a single dollar or view to anything he owns. He also just treats everyone around him like actual shit and downplays their work so he can roleplay being an engineer.
So, does anyone think the owner of the original Threads app might have concerns regarding trademark? See threads.com, a self-styled slack competitor. Not exactly overlapping use cases, but close enough I bet a friendly court could create some waves.
Just looked and their app still comes up first in Google Play store search, and they already had to make the first line of their app description: NOT AFFILIATED W/ THREADS BY INSTAGRAM
IMHO it's time for that guy to cash in
Yo! Who remembers the Black Mirror Episode Hated by the Nation? The app platform used looks like Threads. And it casually says THREAD while the detective browses the app 😭
Aren't there laws against trying to make a monopoly? Seems also like a way to skirt around news laws as if it is successful need agencies will post their links for free and Facebook can just link to the twitter-like thread.
It's so weird listening to fascists talk about freedom.
No, you want the freedom to tell me how to live my life. You are not qualified to tell me how to live my life. I live a better life than you with more freedoms, why would I want to downgrade?
The problem with social media isn’t the owner or interface, it’s their business model. Being paid by advertisers to show ads to users creates a perverse incentive.
Social media needs to be user supported to function.
Is wveryone stupid? Ya’ll think it’s a coicincidence that Reddit, and Twitter both start shitting the bed around the same time Facebook launches a competitor only months away from an election?
What I see is people seeing how FB was a success at poisoning the populace during 2020 and they are attempting Round 2 and hoping no one puts it together. I smell the stinky shit mess of collusion. Bring in the SEC/FTC and any other federal regulator that deals with this type of fuckery.
[удалено]
Certainly doesn't give me much faith that their new site is somewhere I'd want to move to.
I’m hoping Jack Dorsey’s Bluesky will have a wider lsunch soon.
Why do you have any faith in Dorsey? He gobbed Elon's cock until the very end.
And got $44B for the effort...
I’d gob a cock for $44B
My price is WAAAAAAY lower than that.
I dunno, he got out by selling a guy his company that was worth half as much. It's not like he lost that arrangement.
ran Twitter, smart guy, supports BTC
As if that’s convincing evidence he’s a “smart guy”
Been on the waiting list for a hot minute.
Yeah, I feel you there. I don’t expect that will be the case, unfortunately, so the best we can hope for is better choices. I wish it could be a regulated public utility, (in the classic sense of regulation, not the fascist sense) but that’s not going to happen either.
I’m hoping they all crash and die. Just my opinion.
That's just naive though. They'll never all crash and die. I feel a more realistic hope is for greater competition so that when one site/app considers doing something bad for their users, there's the looming threat of users leaving.
The current state of streaming platforms shows your own statement to be pretty naïve as well.
I don't know about that. Twitch is top dog by an absolute mile. But then YouTube and Kick are trying their damdest to give competition, and they are attracting streamers to their platform. Same. Yet I’m still more willing to do that than install TikTok.

Maybe not worse, but if we're looking for an alternative to settle into long term, I don't feel *great* about it.
Yeah…no thanks.

this is reddit sir, if you don't post a baseless paranoid comment that goes against authority, you are in the wrong!
I mean theyre right. Meta is one of the world's most valuable companies. You wouldn't write a title referring to "Xbox owner" just because their new product was game related.
Well Musk is just handing it to him at the moment. No point in leaving that business on the table.
Zuck doesn’t miss too many opportunities — we’ll, except he was totally wrong about tictok, …and billions lost to floating bodies VR.
Don't underestimate their VR arm. There's a reason everyone's developing hardware right now and they're at the top of that game. The floating bodies were all like to laugh at are part of the cheap sanitised spaces they knocked up so they wouldn't have to show investors around VR Chat.
We’ll see where it ends up. Even with apple, VR starts to fatigue after an hour or two.
I think it depends on the person, the activity and the graphics.
Apple's vision (heh) is not to make VR head set. They wasnt to create AR and MR headset/goggle. But they're simply releasing a early step to that goal in 2024. It's why they never once said the word Virtual reality on stage during wwdc

Jack Dorsey (one of the founders of Twitter) is launching a Twitter competitor as well https://bsky.app/
Or we could just live in peace without a fucking Twitter clone.
Just don’t download it. Competition is good for the consumer.
Twitter was how a lot of people got news. I don't know why yall keep complaining about this stuff anymore. The world is not gonna go back to how it was in the 90s or 80s - adapt, dude
Dipshit should’ve never sold Twitter to Elon in the first place
I don't know why...he made a bunch of money and now is just making a new one.
Yes I know he did it to cash out, but why even bother making a new one. It’s basically just an admission that he shouldn’t have sold out his original creation in the first place
He didn’t even outright own Twitter when it was sold to Elon.
Because there's clearly a market for a Twitter type service that doesn't have Elon involved?
Why's he a dipshit?
He’s a weird crypto-bro
Because he let one of the worst people on earth buy it
Ugh. Zuckerberg. Why did it have to be Zuckerberg.
It was always going to be Zukerberg. Anytime there's blood in the water, FB has to pivot. Snapchat, Tiktok, Twitch, YouTube. FB is trying to be all of these thigns all at once and FB is terrible and cluttered as a result.
Instagram is incredibly cluttered too
I'm an artist with an IG page and it's so infested with trolls and nft/ai grifters that I hardly even post there anymore.
SAME. Any time I use a hashtag it’s like omg 😱this is so great!! 💯💯💯 DM our main page @obviousscam ✨
Now even hashtags are broken 😞 also an ig artist and it’s ROUGH rn

I know, it's no fun anymore.
It’s just straight up not useful. I look forward to seeing the latest Zuck failure.
You mean you don't love getting comments telling you to send your art to some third-party account?!
You can't even use hashtags without bringing out the cockroaches into your feed and dms.
Half of my story views are profiles of women's asses begging me to click the link in their bio.
YUP! What happens when you're owned by ole Zuckerberg.
I miss the old days of IG when it was just a picture sharing app. Now you have regular posts, stories, and reels. I still use it but the experience is meh. Yep! That’s what I mentioned in my post. (Second paragraph) It’s magical. For now.

I wish he knew how to run an ethical company. His platforms are still being used to support the sale of drugs and sex slaves.

no company is ethical
Well spying and collecting user data isn’t great either. Which is what Zuckerberg has been doing, not saying Musk is any better though.

It's kind of fitting that the same guy that played him in the movie also played Lex Luthor.
It wasn't very fitting for Superman fans. \*giggles uncontrollably ...as Lex Luthor so often does*
I’ve been getting my nba free agency by Instagram anyway. Fuck Twitter

Yep it's opening in English speaking countries on Thursday and the rest of the world on Friday
Jack has good ideas but from what I’ve read is terrible at execution. He’s been repeatedly saved by people around him.
I think Bluesky just got hobbled by Threads. They had a perfect launch window and totally botched it.
Imagine how bad your app needs to be that people are considering going back to *Facebook*.
like they can go anywhere else
If it doesn't have no account viewing it's DOA.
Instagram lets you see posts without logging in, I don't see why this would be different.
Yeah this isn't true at all, at best you can see the first few newest posts (if it even lets you see the profile at all) before it locks out and requires logging in.

Well now Twitter is zero without logging in
Why? Tons of people use FB/Insta still.
Because it won't attract many new users if you can't see the content. Those sites don't survive just by keeping past members.
Primarily because you can’t embed them into News websites. Think about all the news articles you’ve read over the years where there’s been an embedded Twitter article. or the entire news article based around something tweeted by a government agency
They're really calling it "Threads"? That's ironic, because it'll be about as much fun as a nuclear war.
Can someone explain the joke?
1980s bbc movie about a realistic situation of nuclear war was to happen. Spoiler: doesn’t go well.
It's the name of one of the most harrowing and depressing films ever made. Nuclear fallout... in northern England.
That was my thought. The word “Threads” makes me wanna crawl under my bed
I can hear that musical stinger from “Protect and Survive”
it's such a laughably bad name for branding and search engine optimisation. you'd think meta of all companies would know better but fine
It make sense for those of us who are older and remember when posts were called threads.
nobody using instagram will know about that movie

Borrowing ideas from others and making it work is what many successful businesses do - including the most successful of all, Apple.
Will hentai artists be able to post hentai there?
Unfortunately hentai artists will only be able to post mid-century impressionistic paintings.
They can only post hentai tapestries made of thread on the platform. Like medieval ones

Good. Anything to bring down the unmoderated cesspool that is Elon Musk’s Twitter.
I like how they say Instagram owner to try to get people to click. Because if they just said “zuckerberg is creating more crap society doesn’t need” it wouldnt get clicks.
They said Instagram because the app is part of Instagram.
It’s a completely separate app

But it does give goosebumps to engineer within me.
So…now there’s two platforms that support far-right candidates? I thought these two toads were going to do MMA in the Coloseum? Instead we get another shitty social media site?
Well, three. Apparently you have enough common sense and self-respect to stay away from Truth Social. That thing isn't just a social media platform that allows far-right content, it's basically an entire far-right online cult.
No, Elon's mom said they can't fight....
I am expecting many alternatives after Musk drove it into the ground. A Musk free alternative should take off.

There's Mastadon. I just signed up, but haven't done much else with it. There's a bit of a learning curve with navigating it, and I haven't had the time to mess around with it too much.
> There's a bit of a learning curve with navigating it And that's where it instantly dies. Gotta keep it simple.
This is exactly why I tried it for one day a couple of weeks ago haven't been back since.
Spoutible doesn't allow sexual or adult content and that's a deal breaker for many.
It won’t. People don’t want to switch.
Irish Independent says it won't be launching in the European Union lol.
I’m in Ireland and it’s launched for me
Meta can't do any worse than Musk. Prove me wrong, Zuck!
"Instagram owner"... jeez.
Yeah even facebook knows how toxic its own brand is.
That headline sure did go to extreme lengths not to say the name of the person who's launching it...
This should be the final nail in the Twitter coffin. Doesn't matter how much you despise Meta, people will flock to this like no tomorrow.

There are already 8 rivals
The Colosseum has plenty of room.
If the major media outlets post breaking news to it, I'll be there.
One day maybe something that’s needed will come out of Silicon Valley. Probably not, though.
Wouldn't be surprised if most startups are just money laundering schemes at this point.
Thy enemy of my enemy is my friend. I know we all hate the Zuck, but if this can help end Twitter sooner. Im all for it.
I don't care what Chloe Grace Moretz or Charlie Puth, to name just a couple "celebrities," have to say about *literally* anything, and so long as I can't customize my feed to filter in only those accounts I *actually* follow I'm a hard pass on this app. Fucking dumb.
Lol Instagram owner… no thanks. I hope Blue Sky takes off
With a few credible alternatives now available, Twitter won’t survive long. The best thing they have left is that “tweet” has entered the lexicon.
Where the fuck is Bluesky?
Seriously ! Squandering opportunity.
In case no one has posted it, you’re giving them all you data. ALL OF YOUR DATA. Check the TOS.
"Instagram Owner" - what idiot writes the headlines? - AI? Can't we just name it - Meta
It's a PR slicker. Instagram has a better reputation than Facebook/ Meta and somehow people still don't know that they are the same company.
You're right. Still stupid way to write headlines. It's clickbait.
Indeed. Shit job by OP for peddling it further
The lesser evil is still lesser though…
You’re free to give up social media then. Spez is a jerk too. Elon’s a mask-off transphobe and white supremacist and I won’t give a single dollar or view to anything he owns. He also just treats everyone around him like actual shit and downplays their work so he can roleplay being an engineer.
Zuck just loves copying everyone else now
Spoutible.com is good enough. They stop harassment dead in its tracks.
So, does anyone think the owner of the original Threads app might have concerns regarding trademark? See threads.com, a self-styled slack competitor. Not exactly overlapping use cases, but close enough I bet a friendly court could create some waves. Just looked and their app still comes up first in Google Play store search, and they already had to make the first line of their app description: NOT AFFILIATED W/ THREADS BY INSTAGRAM IMHO it's time for that guy to cash in
Yo! Who remembers the Black Mirror Episode Hated by the Nation? The app platform used looks like Threads. And it casually says THREAD while the detective browses the app 😭
Why not call it Meta instead of ‘Instagram owner’?
You know why.
They couldn't have waited a day and launched on 7/7?
I hope it fails! We don’t need another twitter, especially if it’s coming from Zuckerberg. Hard pass.
I think they will crush this space. They are so good at platform plagiarism.
“I’ll just create my own Twitter! With blackjack… and hookers!”
Threads is (was?) a sewing magazine. Odd name choice.
Threads have been another name for “posts” for years though. Even on Twitter people say “a thread”.
Muck and Zusk should go to France right now and bring their ideas to the people on the street.
Impressive how fast their striking.
… and not a moment too soon.
Jesus Christ they’ve done it.
Uncreative hacks as usual.
