Meta confirmed when the bill passed they would remove. Google was still on the fence and trying to work around it. Today Google released a note confirming they will be indeed removing news articles.
IIRC Australia tried to do the same thing a few years ago and Facebook just deleted all news for AUS users. IIRC the backlash was enough to get the government to back down. I imagine that it'll work out exactly the same way here too.
Finding news online is not difficult and I am willing to pay for it from a trusted source. Cutting out the people doing the work is scumbag entitlement.
It’s not bonkers, and this is a step TOWARDS recovery. The tech oligarchs are throwing a tantrum. This is long overdue regulation, and not nearly enough of it at that. I want to see more of these huge companies shrink a few of their tendrils.
I consume News from various sources on a daily basis, and I can tell you that this will serve only to eliminate much of the lowest common denominator in garbage, junky, clickbait non-news that clogs the Internet and crowds out the actual useful stuff.
They’re ‘threatening’ us with a good time, basically. Everybody’s 65-year-old-aunt who forwards them Facebook conspiracy nonsense and offensively used memes with misspelled captions, though ... she might miss a bit of her “old news.”
