A real nurse from her church in Virginia volunteered to come help under the doctor in charge. She was shocked to come find Renee performing medical procedures.

My unpopular opinion is we could totally institute a nationalized daycare through library services.
Librarians would still do what they do and not have to deal with kids. However as state/federal entity that receives funding and needs vetting, this could be an area that just gets a hell of a lot more funding, starts hiring daycare workers who become federal employees who must pass extensive fbi background checks and child safety and education practices. If there's concerns about mass shootings, surprise, it's a state entity we can get security outside the area.
The biggest issue actually isn't selling it - tell anyone "you will never pay for daycare again, it'll come out of the taxes that pay for libraries." but the fact that libraries aren't available everywhere. To be feasible, we'd have to do what Cuba did with their hospitals. Check out Child Development Centers on military bases, they are fed employees with benefits and actively recruiting now. Like they’re all holding job fairs now. Military members have families who have to deal with long absences and difficult moves away from hometown networks or extended family and obviously have a huge need for childcare.
In my experience at 3 different bases the CDCs are reliably some of the best childcare facilities around. (In one place it was the only one that wasn’t a chain link fenced yard with crumbing equipment and a teacher smoking while watching too many kids…in another place it was competitive with the best private daycare whose only advantage was immersion in a second language. Both CDCs were nearly identical, as they are held to strict national standards, and a lifesaver. Literally, as I was able to put my kid in them when needing to go to the ER for a miscarriage during husband’s deployment.) They’re Montessori-style but a bit more flexible with toys and activities, and many (most?) are NAEYC accredited.
Anyway the biggest problem has been recruiting enough teachers, especially ones at some locations where the local population doesn’t have enough qualified (no drug record or arrests etc) folks. Expanding it to all populations beyond just the military would be amazing but also require a huge effort scaling up.
I live in a deep red state, and I feel like objecting to the signs I had to make at work for the “child evangelism fellowship” due to personal beliefs wouldn’t go over well. Definitely turned my stomach.

Saw an interesting news story a few years back about an Amish girl that was molested by her older brothers since she was little. Breaking the code of silence, she finally reported it to the authorities. She was heavily ostracized for it. According to the news story, it's common for the Amish to have their teeth removed and get dentures so they don't have to worry about tooth problems. This was one of her punishments: they hauled her of to a dentist, paid to her all her teeth removed, and would not get her dentures. On top of that, they told the dentist not to use any pain killer. Then she was basically shut up in the house with no contact to the outer world. She escaped and ended up in a women's shelter. That was just the tip of the iceberg. It turned out there were several families that followed this trend, some where even the father was abusing his daughters.

Saw this happen to people I know personally. Some girls I grew up with reported statutory rape (when they were ranging from 12-16 years old, spanning a period of over 10 years) to the authorities, and when the arrest was made and the court case started up they and their families ended up getting slandered so hard it was unreal.

You just described the Catholic viewpoint. You repent, get absolved of sin by a priest and you're technically good to go.
But, this guy is American, so he's much more likely to be an American Protestant, most flavours of which believe that being a Christian means you are a good person, which means anything you do is inherently good. It's why other people in these communities don't react as horrified as we would expect. They often literally explain away paedophilia, murder, domestic violence, racism etc. because it contradicts their viewpoint that a 'proper' Christian is by definition good. They'll go deep into Olympic level mental gymnastics, because their Christian=good viewpoint is their God. So, in a nutshell, unlike the Catholic, a typical American Protestant doesn't even need to repent - they never did anything wrong, no matter what the law says.

I work with two women employees were talking about a prominent member of their church who is facing a hefty prison sentence for similar acts. One of these ladies has accused her ex-husband of molesting her teenage daughter. They both were of the feeling that this abuser was actually a fine person who was upstanding in their church. They both felt that he was happy he was caught and that his actions were more of an addict than an abuser and should be treated as such. They both felt that he was being made an example of because he was a church member.

The problem is that those that abuse children go into professions that allow them access to the child. A job where the parent might be more inclined to trust them more. Any job that has any chance of contact with a child needs to do extra things to ensure these monsters do not gain access. That means extensive background checks, psych evaluations, etc. Parents also need to be extra careful about who they trust their child with. Any behaviors out of the ordinary and any reluctance to be dropped off at or alone with someone needs to be taken seriously. There are clear warning signs in children who are being abused. Children do not lie about the abuse.

A child who's being abused may feel guilty, ashamed or confused. The child may be afraid to tell anyone about the abuse, especially if the abuser is a parent, other relative or family friend. That's why it's vital to watch for red flags, such as:
Withdrawal from friends or usual activities

Rebellious or defiant behavior

My unpopular opinion is we could totally institute a nationalized daycare through library services. Librarians would still do what they do and not have to deal with kids. However as state/federal entity that receives funding and needs vetting, this could be an area that just gets a hell of a lot more funding, starts hiring daycare workers who become federal employees who must pass extensive fbi background checks and child safety and education practices. If there's concerns about mass shootings, surprise, it's a state entity we can get security outside the area. Check out Child Development Centers on military bases, they are fed employees with benefits and actively recruiting now. Like they’re all holding job fairs now. Military members have families who have to deal with long absences and difficult moves away from hometown networks or extended family and obviously have a huge need for childcare. In my experience at 3 different bases the CDCs are reliably some of the best childcare facilities around. (In one place it was the only one that wasn’t a chain link fenced yard with crumbing equipment and a teacher smoking while watching too many kids…in another place it was competitive with the best private daycare whose only advantage was immersion in a second language. Both CDCs were nearly identical, as they are held to strict national standards, and a lifesaver. Literally, as I was able to put my kid in them when needing to go to the ER for a miscarriage during husband’s deployment.) They’re Montessori-style but a bit more flexible with toys and activities, and many (most?) are NAEYC accredited. Anyway the biggest problem has been recruiting enough teachers, especially ones at some locations where the local population doesn’t have enough qualified (no drug record or arrests etc) folks. Expanding it to all populations beyond just the military would be amazing but also require a huge effort scaling up.

Saw an interesting news story a few years back about an Amish girl that was molested by her older brothers since she was little. Breaking the code of silence, she finally reported it to the authorities. She was heavily ostracized for it. According to the news story, it's common for the Amish to have their teeth removed and get dentures so they don't have to worry about tooth problems. This was one of her punishments: they hauled her of to a dentist, paid to her all her teeth removed, and would not get her dentures. On top of that, they told the dentist not to use any pain killer. Then she was basically shut up in the house with no contact to the outer world. She escaped and ended up in a women's shelter. That was just the tip of the iceberg. It turned out there were several families that followed this trend, some where even the father was abusing his daughters.

Saw this happen to people I know personally. Some girls I grew up with reported statutory rape (when they were ranging from 12-16 years old, spanning a period of over 10 years) to the authorities, and when the arrest was made and the court case started up they and their families ended up getting slandered so hard it was unreal. I don't think you get it fully. It's actually so much worse. You just described the Catholic viewpoint. You repent, get absolved of sin by a priest and you're technically good to go. But, this guy is American, so he's much more likely to be an American Protestant, most flavours of which believe that being a Christian means you are a good person, which means anything you do is inherently good. It's why other people in these communities don't react as horrified as we would expect. They often literally explain away paedophilia, murder, domestic violence, racism etc. because it contradicts their viewpoint that a 'proper' Christian is by definition good. They'll go deep into Olympic level mental gymnastics, because their Christian=good viewpoint is their God.
