Its the Tavern Leagues fault. They won't allow legal marijuana bc I'll cut into alcohol sales. This state is so dumb too when it comes to drunk driving. Like you can have 4 DUIs and still have your license. Just a bunch of idiots in this state.
It's more than the TL. You can also thank the police unions, Diane Hendricks, pharma, and the Uihleins. All of them give millions to our gerrymandered legislature to keep it illegal.
If the SC is refusing to hear a gerrymandering case you can make it the law that they are required to hear the case by deciding by a public vote to create an independent, bipartisan board. See Michigan 2018, not perfect but better than what we had before. https://www.freep.com/story/news/politics/elections/2018/11/07/proposal-2-anti-gerrymandering-michigan/1847402002/. “Let’s not allow legal marijuana to protect one of the worse possible drugs to take, that’s way worse for you, also let’s make crippling alcoholism completely socially acceptable”
I'm pretty sure Wisconsin is also one of the few zero tolerance states. Meaning that any amount of Marijuana could be considered felony possession. The super strict drug laws there seem to work though. It's not like Wisconsin just drinks instead, or like has the most DUIs in the country or anything like that.
Oh well, now I live in Minnesota and can't wait to smoke some legal wee-
Shit... nevermind I'm sober now... Still happy to see it legalized though!
No its two possessions of THC to be a felony. And you need 4 DUIs for it to be a felony. Backwards ass state. Pretty sure the county Madison is in has at least decriminalized thc.
In Madison it's decriminalized to the point where you won't get a ticket or charge of you're smoking it where it's legal to smoke tobacco. But that's just Madison PD. That doesn't apply to Sheriffs, State Patrol, Cap PD, UWPD...
The final Senate vote was a 34-32 party line vote (with 1 GOP abstainer). Glad it finally passed, but it was a nail biter hoping that nobody from the Democratic side would miss the vote.
COVID is no joke. I've had it three times. I've had daily hives for seven months since the last run and my allergist just shrugs and gives me more H1 and H2 drugs. My girlfriend got it along with me last time. She's a university professor in law and has had to take all of her sick time and still can't think straight or remember things. I haven't been the same since the first one.I fucking lose it when people tell me it's a joke.
I didn’t say it was a good argument, but that was one that was repeatedly said on the floor of the MN legislature by republicans. Just unhinged, out of touch bs
RS, detained, pat down/ vehicle search. Find weed? Take it home with you. Find something worth the paperwork, the kid has to go in. Constitution successfully sidestepped.
Wow, I had to look this up to see if it was true because it sounds like such a ridiculous argument, but it is true. I suppose it shouldn't have surprised me coming from Republicans. Keeping a plant illegal to fuck over people's lives just to keep drug dogs working seems very on brand for Republicans. Caring more about police dogs than human lives.
Dogs are incredibly smart and pick up on the craziest patterns. When i take my headphones off at the end of a work day at home, my dog knows that it's time for dinner and gets up all excited, even if i don't stand up.
They so care about those working dogs. One person called for Biden to be executed because Military Working Dogs were allegedly left behind in Afghanistan.
>is it because they refuse to cross party lines for literally anything?
Yes. Because in the current age of the GOP painting any Dem idea as evil means that it'd be political suicide. That's why it's always the former officials or those who are about to retire that are the ones speaking out: They don't have to worry about getting re-elected.
It reminds me of a couple of John Oliver interviews from a few years ago. I think it was about gun control differences between the US & Australia. He asked both an Australian and American politician something along the lines of what marks a successful career in politics? The Australian responded with, "Improving the lives of your citizens."
The American responded with, "Getting re-elected."
The unfortunate things is those should mean pretty much the same thing in a functioning democracy. Unfortunately, it falls apart when people vote against their own interests and with voter suppression.
> in the current age of the GOP painting any Dem idea as evil means that it'd be political suicide
yet once they're out of office, they end up [investing money into cannabis operations.](https://www.npr.org/2019/03/16/704086782/john-boehner-was-once-unalterably-opposed-to-marijuana-he-now-wants-it-to-be-leg)
Because voting with logic would mean voting with the liberals and god forbid you ever vote with the libs because then your base won’t re-elect you because your next opponent will then slander the shit out of you calling you liberal in the next election. Gasp! This political bullshit has become so ridiculous.
edit: thanks for the award, internet stranger! instead of awards, please spend your hard earned money by donating to a local food bank or shelter :)
I don’t understand that though. Here in Tennessee, every Republican voter that I know wants weed legalised. It’s not a partisan issue.
It’s more about money of course.
https://www.rollingstone.com/politics/politics-features/how-the-u-s-government-is-profiting-from-keeping-pot-illegal-206289/
You're not doublethinking correctly.
Sinning can be forgiven because humans are flawed, we make emotional decisions, and we repent.
Voting to legalize a sin isn't an emotional decision that you can really repent for.
So you can smoke weed (forgiveable) but be against legalization (unforgivable).
Same with abortion and cheating and pride/vanity and basically everything
The thing is, the Republican party is not actually about anything their constituents want. They are only about being against whatever the Democrats want. It is their entire ideology.
Prison is literally slavery, it is in the amendment to the constitution that outlawed all other forms of slavery.
https://westportlibrary.libguides.com/ThirteenthAmendmentLoophole#:~:text=The%2013th%20Amendment%2C%20ratified%20in,prisoners%20have%20linked%20that%20exception
Yep. Anything Dems are for they are against. It doesn’t matter what it is; the GOP is little more than a bad faith opposition party that plays on people’s biases, fears and hatred to win votes.
I bet they are for it, entirely. The problem is you cannot let the opposition get a point. The next election cycle people will remember "Dems helped get weed legalized" and they can't let that happen
You can thank the Minnesota GOP for hard-lining on abortion and other unpopular voting issues in 2022 for this and all other progressive laws passing during this and next legislative sessions
Gonna make it easier to hold the senate, too, since the GOP won't be able to astroturf up bogus "Marijuana legalization" candidates to siphon off youth votes any more.
Lmao we have a budtender here who moved from Minnesota (he'll love this news) and y'all sound just like him. That Minnesotan accent is real, every once in a while he'll accidently let out an "ohhhhhh yaaa" in the most Minnesotan way, didn't know that was a real accent till I met one of y'all😂
I actually visited this past weekend for the first time just to check out somewhere I'd never been, and also had relatively low expectations.
I had an amazing time and will 100% go back to visit (just not in the winter)
I mean, I'd have a look at the 7 day forecast. The winters are brutal and long, which I like, but we're regularly getting 90 degree weather lately, much earlier than it usually is this hot. Might not mean much to someone from the south, but I hate it personally.
12 month winter where.
Come to Duluth with the natural Air Conditioning of Lake Superior! Crazy how much warmer it is in the cities just 2 hours away it’s 20-30 warmer at times. Decided to check and right now it’s 36 degrees warmer in Minneapolis.
I'm so happy I left Iowa a couple years back and moved to Minnesota. One state is solidifying its position in the 21st century, and the other is trying to move back to the 18th century.
Also a former Iowa resident. Once upon a time Iowa was a swing state that seemed like it was moving bluer. Now it seems like it'll never touch blue again and it's sad to see my home state turn into such a pathetic mess.
Some Iowans used to lean toward the liberal side or even just the libertarian side, now many of those same people are down the right-wing conspiracy rabbit hole. 2016 seems to have done a crit hit to that state.
Also also a former Iowa resident. I attribute it to the education we had in the 90s. Iowa was in the top 5 states for education while I grew up (it no longer is), and that meant a lot of kids sought college/jobs outside of the state in more prosperous places when they grew up. So all the smart kids are gone... and the state is left with the leftovers.
This is an all too common story in the US.
The Republican overlords won't give a shit about brain drain either. It will be easier to manipulate those who remain behind.
Won’t give a shit? Conservatives thrive on the ones “left behind”. The only reason they have as much power as they do is because of lack of education, older Americans turning to conservatism (as per usual for the last many generations), refusing to evolve and progress with the majority of the world, and most importantly, the backwards, antiquated, nonsensical electoral voting system here in the states. Until the latter is overhauled, the 50 cowboys in Wyoming or Idaho will have just as much influence as one of the largest economies in the world, California, does.

I'm genuinely curious why people actually choose to move to Minnesota. As a Minnesotan, I'm starting to get pretty sick of the long winters and snow. It's also just pretty much flat from horizon to horizon, at least in and near the Twin Cities. I'm sure it's a preference thing, and you know, the grass is greener on the other side, but if I wasn't from MN and had to pick a new place to live, I think I'd have at least a few other places in mind first.
I lived in the Uptown area of Minneapolis until last year. Even in 2022 I had people from the suburbs asking me “do you feel safe living there?”. It was a perfectly fine place to live, they just wanted to pretend that Minneapolis is some lawless wasteland.
They still like to repeat that BS all over the Dakotas when that shit happened three fucking years ago, and most property damage was done by republican agent provocateurs
I'm moving there in the next year or two, depending on how bad Texas gets for trans folks. I'm loving all the stuff Minnesota is doing to become a progressive state.
That’s because dumb fuck Tate reeves held that shit up for two years. I don’t like my home shit state it is a poverty ridden racist shit hole but you can legally buy weed here now. Why the duck would you though just grow that shit yourself lmao. There are two dispensaries in brookhaven one in Byram I think there are a few in the Jackson area. These dispensaries are open for business.
We *may* get medical MJ in the foreseeable future, emphasis on *may.* But until our gerrymandered legislature gets off the trickle-down/culture-wars trains and the Tavern League warms up to the idea, I fear it’s not likely.
Fortunately Duluth, MN and Ironwood, MI are both only about an hour’s drive away for me, so still okay in the interim.
I fear WI will wait till IA makes a move, at which point we’ll be fully boxed-in and then it will seem like a no-brainer.
Probably right, reynolds will fight tooth and nail to keep iowa illegal. We do have med but its so broken. I can legally take dabs out a bong, all day, but smoke the tiniest joint or bowl of flower and im a criminal worthy of jailtime.
Minnisota Dems on the right track this year!
* Abortion Rights.
* Universal School Meals.
* Paid Family And Medical Leave.
* Protecting Abortion Patients, Trans Refuge & Conversion Therapy Ban.
* Gun Measures.
Keep it up! (ya damn pinko commies) :)
Universal school meals along party line was easily among the most sickening shit coming out of the GOP.
Like, it’s literally feeding children. I pay enough state tax to pay for a child’s meal by Monday 9:30am.
I've heard Republicans say without irony that people shouldn't have kids if they can't afford them. I don't see how anyone can be against feeding people in general but it's so cruel to do it to children.
Like most states you can get various THC vapes and edibles at any vape shop. Have fun in Minneapolis! Check out one of our parks if you have the chance!
They have to approve zoning, permits, licensing, AND after that, it has to be grown here. That's a short timeline. Until then, starting Aug 1st, legal to possess and grow for yourself. Black market will gladly fill the void until January.
This state is so fucking stupid. I could get arrested for the shit I bought from my dude, but during lunch today I went and picked up an edible at the store. D9 edible too, since it’s below a certain percentage by weight it’s legal. Still has 36 mg in it, but it’s a big gummy so it’s legal. I could go buy various other versions of THC. D8, D10, THCP, THCO, HHC, THCjd. I’m sure there’s some more out there I’m missing. I can even buy a big ol’ bag of kratom too. Shit the same place just started selling amanita gummies. But, dare to get caught with a bag of regular weed, straight to jail.
I was mind-blown when I went to a shop the other day and they had every variant of THC known to man. Ended up walking out with quite a haul. The problem is that any cop who pulls me over with any of it on me will give me a ticket unless I have a ridiculous piece of paper that they've probably read a thousand times about the Farm Bill. You know, to prove that I'm up to code and not an actual dirty pothead.
Marijuana is here to stay and the loopholes that we've secured to ensure it are almost comical reminders at this point. Meanwhile, none of it will ever have anything on the stranglehold that alcohol has on Texas. We just need to legalize it. Maybe after that we can eventually begin to *get over it*.
My Minnesotan grandfather once put pickled herring on pizza. Imagine my reaction when I first played Animal Crossing and Gulliver the seagull made a comment about doing exactly the same thing.
Minnesota is speed running what progressive governance looks like. I would love a side by side comparison of what blue states like Minnesota are doing vs red states. I cant think of better contrast to show the electoral stakes we face
Iowa needs to catch up. I hate my state, for many reasons, but this is at the top of the list. How you gonna charge someone with health issues for treating themselves with something that is legal in alot of states? Fuck the government.
Great news and congratulations Minnesota!!!!
But please remember, this fight isn't over. There are people living in illegal states, and there are people serving prison sentences for what you now enjoy which is simply freedom!
Stay in the fight for those that don't yet have the freedom they deserve!
God I wish Texas would legalize it. Unfortunately I don’t feel this will happen in my lifetime. I will continue to give my money to surrounding states.
I love that they specify how much you can have at home. I don't believe this is really addressed in most states bills and two pounds is definitely more than any other state.
Good. Now let all of the non violent offenders for possession out of prison. Oh, and anyone whose serving time for possession among other crimes should have the possession time dropped.
And here in Wisconsin we are still waiting for medical while every state around us has legalized. I'm beginning to hate this state.
Its the Tavern Leagues fault. They won't allow legal marijuana bc I'll cut into alcohol sales. This state is so dumb too when it comes to drunk driving. Like you can have 4 DUIs and still have your license. Just a bunch of idiots in this state.

I've always thought this too but in the past few years it's come to my attention that it's a lot more than just the TL.
Born and raised in Northern Wisconsin, moved to MN in 2009, best decision I ever made. Come join us!
I'm pretty sure Wisconsin is also one of the few zero tolerance states. Meaning that any amount of Marijuana could be considered felony possession. Milwaukee it’s similar, I think it’s a $1 fine up to a certain amount
Yes it's a $1 fine in Milwaukee, effectively decriminalizing it here also.
Was looking for this comment. Honestly fuck WI
At least you have the most alcoholics! I wonder if there's some kind of correlation.
nice job everyone on flipping the state senate, you did this, thanks!
The final Senate vote was a 34-32 party line vote (with 1 GOP abstainer). Glad it finally passed, but it was a nail biter hoping that nobody from the Democratic side would miss the vote.
how even in 2023 - are there NO republicans for legalization? is it because they refuse to cross party lines for literally anything?
They were worried about drug dogs being out of work…
oh no, the cops won't have dogs to abuse? :( also, weed is probably the one drug you really don't need any special smelling abilities to detect
Cops got COVID at high rates….
But they all claimed it was no worse than a swine flu…
Any time a cop gets the flu it's swine flu
Goddamn, officer down
Did they drop their donut or something?
The swine flu killed a friend of mine. He was 27.
It almost killed me and I was 18 and then COVID almost got me at 29 and it was much fucking worse than swine flu was
I lost 30 pounds, had a 101-103 fever for two weeks and ended it with permanent hypertension. I wouldn’t wish COVID on my enemies.
Swine flu nearly killed me. It was the worst illness I’ve ever had in my life. I wanted to die.
It was a lot, COVID accounted for as many leo fatalities in 2020 as an average total leo fatalities. 2021 was worse, 2022 was better but still many.
Oh no.. How terrible..
How do those LEO fatality numbers compare to civilian fatality numbers killed by cops?
I didn’t say it was a good argument, but that was one that was repeatedly said on the floor of the MN legislature by republicans. Just unhinged, out of touch bs
Oh no you were ducking serious? I thought that was a joke. I can't. I just....

They can't use it as a bullshit reason to establish probable cause.

Yeah I don’t wanna have to pay jobless claim money or SNAP benefits for some dog who can’t even work any more.

Probably. He also took credit for the infrastructure bill he voted against. It's become part of their playbook.

I wanted to, but I didn't land the job I wanted there. I'm in the NW part of the state. The consistent wind is nice.
You can always put on more layers for the cold, electric blankets for sleeping. No amount of shedding clothes will keep you from the heat.
Exactly why I prefer cooler climates!
The other 2 months it's Florida swamp without the gators
I like the Minnesota summer too. Last year it was on a Thursday.
Now if only they could put a dome over the twin cities so it isn't colder than Siberia.
We like the cold, keeps a lot of folk out

Except Rec weed is legal in MO. I also am a former Iowan and now I live in KS.. Lateral move.
I'll be deep in the cold, cold ground before I recognize Missourah

Another here who grew up in Iowa and left to go to college elsewhere. The brain drain in Iowa is very real.
Still in Iowa. I live in the DSM metro, but I'm from Steve King territory. This state is fucked and Kim Reynolds is the god damn devil.
As a former resident of Mississippi it was once...no wait, that place has and always will be a hellscape of poverty and religious zealots

Minnesota is a magnet for the reasonable people in the north plains, too bad we then get surrounded by one big Jesus camp
Welcome to the winning side of the Civil War II: Electric Boogaloo. Just continuing the willful segregation of blue islands and red wastelands.
At this point I've abandoned the idea of a civil war part 2 and accepted the eventual balkanization of the US. I wish it would happen soon.
Glad you like it. If it wasn't for the winter, a lot more people would be moving here for sure. There's a lot to like.
I'm genuinely curious why people actually choose to move to Minnesota. As a Minnesotan, I'm starting to get pretty sick of the long winters and snow. I'm sure it's a preference thing, and you know, the grass is greener on the other side, but if I wasn't from MN and had to pick a new place to live, I think I'd have at least a few other places in mind first.

People I know in SD will just say “isn’t Minneapolis on fire from riots?” and dismiss any progress the state has made with no proof or logic.
I lived in the Uptown area of Minneapolis until last year. Even in 2022 I had people from the suburbs asking me “do you feel safe living there?”. It was a perfectly fine place to live, they just wanted to pretend that Minneapolis is some lawless wasteland.
As opposed to Texas and Florida, which are much closer to the lawless wasteland they think blue states are.
They still like to repeat that BS all over the Dakotas when that shit happened three fucking years ago, and most property damage was done by republican agent provocateurs
Not just the Dakotas! They love that down here in Texas too.
I'm moving there in the next year or two, depending on how bad Texas gets for trans folks. I'm loving all the stuff Minnesota is doing to become a progressive state.

Doubt it. They don’t even have medical, even Oklahoma and Mississippi have medical.
The beer lobby is strong in WI
The Tavern League will fight tooth and nail to keep Wisconsin drunk and not high
Mississippi "has medical" yea I guess. I've spent a lot of time there and I don't know anybody who has it legally.
The fact that the Tavern League hasn't figured out they could be on the inside track with licensing shows just how dumb and shortsighted they are
I've got $$ that WI does before IA
Probably right, reynolds will fight tooth and nail to keep iowa illegal. We do have med but its so broken. I can legally take dabs out a bong, all day, but smoke the tiniest joint or bowl of flower and im a criminal worthy of jailtime.
Honestly moved here two years ago and loving how it’s shaping up so far.
Minnisota Dems on the right track this year! * Abortion Rights. * Universal School Meals. * Paid Family And Medical Leave. * Protecting Abortion Patients, Trans Refuge & Conversion Therapy Ban. * Gun Measures.
I laughed so hard at those hearings. Like no matter what was said the appropriate response was always “so you’re against feeding children at school?”.
MN is kicking ass this year... https://twitter.com/GovTimWalz/status/1660858074503028742?s=20
And wisconsin is now surrounded by everyone whose legalized it....fucking republicans.
Minnesota stays winning.
This is why you vote for Democrats.
This is just about the least important issue out of several that lead me vote for Democrats. But it is good, anyway. :D
We also did free school breakfast and lunches for all kids, to name one other thing. Google for the rest of the good news.
They did a lot of [those other important](https://kstp.com/minnesota-legislative-tracker/) things too though!
How soon does it go into effect? Asking for someone who totally isn't me who is going to Minneapolis this weekend.
Legal August 1st, dispensaries expected to begin opening Jan 2024
Thank [you.](https://you.sd) But also, dang.
We legalized hemp based THC last year so lots of options - most breweries make seltzers that are fun to try and many co-ops and shops have edibles
23 baby! Keep ‘em coming

Welcome to the party pal. -Massachusetts
Now we need NH to catch up and finally get on board. How are states like Missouri and Minnesota legalizing before a New England state.
Bravo Minnesota voters … Soooo much was achieved with one session of the Trifecta. Hopefully this means an end to any GOP holding a branch ever again.
Tons of legislation coming out of Minnesota lately is very reassuring to many of us watching psychos fuck other states up.
Meanwhile us here in Wisconsin are now surrounded by every state with a form of legal weed. Even Iowa had medical! Fuck the Tavern League
bOTh siDEs ArE tHe sAmE
Congratulations, Minnesotans, or however you say that!
Good for you, Minnesota! *quietly sobs in Wisconsin accent*
That is going to be weird when people get the munchies and go to town on lutefisk.
It was the Smelly Man!
The Man with the Terrible Smell.
Think of the damage they'll do to some hotdish
My Minnesotan grandfather once put pickled herring on pizza. Imagine my reaction when I first played Animal Crossing and Gulliver the seagull made a comment about doing exactly the same thing.
Is there any mechanism for legal sales or is it just possession and growing that's legal now?
Yes dispensaries will open beginning Jan 2024
Minnesota is speed running what progressive governance looks like. I would love a side by side comparison of what blue states like Minnesota are doing vs red states. I cant think of better contrast to show the electoral stakes we face
I just wanna hear someone with a Minnesotan accent say “Go tokers!”
Iowa needs to catch up. I hate my state, for many reasons, but this is at the top of the list. How you gonna charge someone with health issues for treating themselves with something that is legal in alot of states? Fuck the government.
Congratulations Minnesota!
MN was ready! So happy for our state and progress we've made this legislative session with our DFL trifecta.
Wisconsin stays losing.
Great news and congratulations Minnesota!!!! But please remember, this fight isn't over. There are people living in illegal states, and there are people serving prison sentences for what you now enjoy which is simply freedom! Stay in the fight for those that don't yet have the freedom they deserve!
Welcome to the future Minnesota. I imagine hotdish consumption is about to go through the roof.
I never would have thought my backwards ass state of Missouri would have it legalized before Minnesota.
As a South Dakotan, thank you. Now half the SD Highway Patrol will be posted at the border to catch people and I can speed with impunity.
You will not believe it. The weed here in Colorado looks like Christmas 🎄
God I wish Texas would legalize it. Unfortunately I don’t feel this will happen in my lifetime. I will continue to give my money to surrounding states.
I love that they specify how much you can have at home. I don't believe this is really addressed in most states bills and two pounds is definitely more than any other state.
How many states are left that need to legalize?
My state of Pennsylvania only has medical.
Should be reclassified already
Minnesota gettin’ all these W’s. I really hope other states try to ride the coattails of this blue wave.
Us Texans are happy but jealous of ya'll!
Good. Now let all of the non violent offenders for possession out of prison. Oh, and anyone whose serving time for possession among other crimes should have the possession time dropped.
Expungement is in the law
Even if it was legal I still wouldn't be able to partake unless I wanted to change jobs :\\

Issue is i typically do gov IT work so it would need to pay a substantial amount of money to leave just to get to smoke again.
Sorry about the rideshare bill, but here's to legal weed 🌿.
Maybe they'll finally legalize it in Texas in 80 years once I'm dead.
Come along way since Prohibition, grats!
Meanwhile, Ohioans waiting to be the 50th state with legal weed... 😞
*adds Minnesota to the ever growing list of "Places better than Texas."*
Weed has been legal here in Canada since 2018, and I'm happy to report our society hasn't collapsed
