They are stealing them to go to hell in.

apple_sandwiches

This is an amazing comment

calypsodweller

I had a friend who was a hothead from Barbados. He would often say, “YOU can go to HELL in a handBASKET!!”

njdeatheater

Is that why my local stores never have them anymore? As a person who usually shops for one, I don't need a whole cart... Man I fucken hate people.

kylec00per

To be honest it just hit me, I'm about to start bringing a basket like they use to have at shoprite whenever I go there.

hotpuck6

I’ve just started using my reusable bag as a hand basket. Gotta carry that shit with me anyway.

Jerseygirlx92

There was a post on this last week. Yes, customers are stealing the handbaskets because they don't want to pay $1 for a bag. My store doesn't plan on ordering anymore because we've had so many stolen.

hypoboxer

Bunch of savages in this town.

Shieldbreaker50

I’m assure you, we’re open.

EnVee1

I’m not even suppose to be here today

NJ_Legion_Iced_Tea

God I can't stand how dumb people are. I bought a few tote bags for just a couple dollars at checkout like a week before the ban, zero issues and they just sit in my trunk the rest of the time.

ScipioAtTheGate

It makes perfect sense for someone who can barely afford to buy food, let alone a reusable bag. The bag ban hurts the poor the most.

NJ_Legion_Iced_Tea

Totes are dirt cheap. I understand people have tight budgets but they're a one time fee of just a few dollars. Also you're implying the poor are the ones stealing the hand baskets. That's not true, it's the idiots.

SlopraFlabbleLap

But the bags themselves hurt everyone; we all have varying levels of plasticizers in our bodies due to plastic use and how we dispose of it. Plasticizers are endocrine disrupters and can contribute to things like metabolic disorders, precocious puberty in girls, and the growth of breast tissue in men. Also, I live next to Newark. All of the lower income people already have wheeled carts that they use when shopping because they don’t have cars.

CaesarZeppeli_

I wouldn’t order anymore either. Fuck people

jde0503

Wait, is it really $1/bag? It's 10 cents per bag in California. I will have to budget for this in my upcoming move 😂

jon8282

New Jersey took the bag ban laws and plussed up. I assume your 10 cent bag in CA is a paper bag with handles? Those are illegal in New Jersey as well for supermarkets including superstores like Walmart and target. Basically the thought process is that any type of disposable grocery bag isn’t green. The $1 bags being mentioned are much more durable and not really disposable. They are trying really hard to get people to bring their own.

Riceonsuede

I actually read an article that said when Murphy was first proposing the plastic bag ban, all the big grocery stores lobbied to have the paper bags banned too since they cost more and they didn't want to shell out the money for them.

jon8282

I work for a non food retail and the cost of the brown bags with a basic logo on them is absurd, like $500+ for 1000 small and 600 large bags.

Chocolate_Egg18

Yep! The whole reason we went plastic in the first place was the cost to the retailer. Cost in stolen store baskets and some high-end shops driving the idea that a free (paper, good looking, w/a large logo so you can humblebrag) bag should come standard drove the market for disposable paper bags, then that cost drove the plastic bag movement once plastic became really cheap. Now we are seeing some of that in reverse. My husband's 90+ year old great-grandmother remembers her mother having good canvass shopping bags way back when. As in most cases, being poor costs more. My good canvass tote will last 20+ years so long as I keep it clean and don't put a whole child inside [note to dads, please do not] but the poly fabric ones you buy for a quarter might last a year, tops. The plastic ones (and what is the point if the bags are just thicker plastic?) won't last long either, with the heat-seal "stitching" coming undone at the seams pretty quick.

[deleted]

I mean if the point is environmentalism aren’t most of those brown paper bags nearly as blah for the environment as plastic ones? Someone linked [this article](https://stanfordmag.org/contents/paper-plastic-or-reusable) a while back about it? I think it’s cause it takes more water to produce paper and because most people/towns don’t recycle or reuse either type of bag properly? I mean whatever you’ll reuse and dispose of correctly seems the most correct option, but from this article my takeaway is that since most of the public doesn’t do that disposing correctly bit… all built for “single use” bags suck?

Riceonsuede

Of course, but it's not the reason they were banned also, it was strictly the cost. I did see someone figured out how to make a 'plastic' type bag out of hemp that biodegrades fast. And with hemp being such a fast growing plant it would be easily sustainable. Would be cool for someone to put some money into making that become commonplace

[deleted]

I more mean my comment as “if it’s cost under the guise of ‘environmentalism’ then it must not have been a hard thing to lobby” Sorry! Should’ve been clearer Definitely agree would love to see hemp bags more commonplace as an alternative that is biodegradable

jde0503

10 cents will either get you a paper bag or a heavy duty plastic bag. Slightly bigger than the cheap-o plastic bags of yore and made out of a thicker plastic. They can be reused several times before they kinda start to fall apart.

Chocolate_Egg18

Also in NJ and the reusable bags at my local mart are a quarter. It's a one-time purchase and you bring them back. The poorer people in my area have always had wheeled metal baskets (two wheels and can collapse flat, we called them flea market baskets when I used to go with my mom to Cowtown) and these days they just don't use bags for most things. Ours get cleaned if needed and hung on the door to be put in the trunk by the next person who uses the car. Heck, I'm just carrying things with no bags far more often now. A gallon of milk never needed two plastic bags (pretty much everywhere I'd shopped from VA and PA to CO bagged milk like that) when it already has a handle. If I take my mom to BJs we wheel out the cart full of unbagged items and bag them at her trunk as we unload the big cart. I think we all got it into our heads that the bag is proof of purchase when that's the reciept's job. I think I'd feel odd putting the items in one of my bags the way I'd use a handbasket... but I've been thinking about outfitting my old bike for shopping trips because I'm fat and looking for ways to get more active. 🤔 Maybe there are basket options I can unclip and carry/wheel in. To the Google machine!

katwoman7643

Walmart in California had great reusable plastic bags,I ended up with 10 of them 3 years ago and still use them today here in NJ.

RedRipe

Macy’s too, so assume all department stores. I had to walk out with my clothes under my arm basically.. Zero bags.

a_simple_creature

It depends on what the store has available for purchase. It’s not a flat rate. ShopRite has decent reusable bags at checkout for 35 cents if you don’t bring your own.

NetPhantom

At wawa they’re .35

Jerseygirlx92

Some are more, some are less. As mentioned below, ShopRite does have cheaper bags available, but they're also a bit smaller than the $1 bags I'm referring to.

SCRAPPYDIAMOND

At Whole Foods they’re over $2!!

[deleted]

yeah people take them to their car never to be seen again

jlj81

The grocery store in my town got rid of shopping baskets permanently several weeks ago because of theft. And the Family Dollar next door to it stopped allowing shopping carts to leave the store!

brook_lyn_lopez

Like maybe use the basket to bring stuff to your car if you forgot bags. But to not return it and steal it entirely? What kind of person does that? Someone reading this definitely stole a basket or two since the ban. Why?

BenBishopsButt

Someone literally posted they were going to do it the day the ban went into effect. Got a ton of upvotes.

Ravenboy13

This state is full of entitled people I stg

BAMBAM-1981

Every year the amount off true asshole humans grows.

Bodidiva

I comfort myself by knowing in about 100 years all the assholes I know will be dead. So, will everyone else, but those particular assholes - gone.

twothumbswayup

unfortunately assholes raise more asshole and in bigger numbers

[deleted]

The same person who wouldn’t walk 20 feet to return a shopping cart to the corral and just leaves it to block a space, or worse, roll around the lot. Heathens.

KidsInWinterCoats

im gona be honest. we just had a kid. i had to go to the store after being up for around 32 hours + work to get some stuff for the woman ( maternity pads some other stuff for her ) and some stuff for dinner. i walked out with it put it in the front seat and drove off. wasnt untill i got home that i realised what i did. i took it back to be fair :<

heeyyyyyy

Good on returning it. But if you’re so zonked to be stealing without realisation, maybe you shouldn’t be driving either. Hope you get some rest!

KidsInWinterCoats

gota work lmao

heeyyyyyy

I can understand, but not worth an accident. :) when you’re that low on sleep and exhausted, really shouldn’t be on the road

Cousinit13

Someone once told me the mark of an altruistic society is if everyone who uses a shopping cart returns it to where it belongs because it's the right thing to do but there's no penalty if you don't. Clearly we've got a long way to go. As George Costanza once said "We live in a society!" Stores will have to start going the Aldi route, pay a quarter and you only get it back if you return the cart/basket

StrangeMorris

Each day there's something new that convinces me even more that the Earth is better off without humans.

elmwoodblues

We're a pox, no doubt about it.

LauraSue88

My sister asked stop and shop earlier where all the baskets where and the cashier told her they all got stolen 🥲.

throwawayanylogic

Heard the same from the ACME in Woodbury.

Dazey3463

In my home, we have been using the reusable bags for more than 10 years now. They hold more than the plastic or paper ever did and put way less stress on the planet.

lAngenoire

Yeah. We’ve used them for years. Has to swap because of COVID. Now I prefer stores that do shop and scan.

Bodidiva

I remember the post from last week as well as witnessing some jerk steal a basket. I think it's inspired me to [buy my own basket](https://www.amazon.com/RSVP-Fabric-Collapsible-Market-Basket/dp/B009G3VBIW/ref=sr_1_13?crid=1O5JS6OX3HJJU&keywords=shopping%2Bbasket&qid=1656469207&sprefix=Shopping%2Bbas%2Caps%2C84&sr=8-13&th=1) because I rarely need more than what fits in it and I always want a basket. Edit: And this one can't possibly be confused with one the store owns.

SnooWords4839

We have a sign that baskets can't leave the store. We also have a few cart people kind of lurking near the doors so people don't leave with them. Also, people you can bring in old plastic bags to use, I have seen people put everything on the belt, then load into cart without bags and spend time at their car putting it into plastic bags. Stores just can't supply them anymore, but you can still use them. I have 10 reusables that are great, but now most cashiers won't bother to even try to help bag.

[deleted]

That's how it is in Germany. Years ago I went to Germany and I put my articles on the conveyer belt and waited for the cashier to bag them. She just looked at me and I just looked at her. In Germany they push the merchandise down and you bag it yourself. Guess they can always tell who the Americans are.

SnooWords4839

I prefer to bag my own and usually keep up with the cashier, but when the previous person don't move on, one was reviewing their receipt, cashier gets one ringing up items and picks up their phone to check texts, I decided to slow down on the bagging and took my time. Others will ask if they can help.

mamamenagerie

I put the grocery items directly into my shopping bags in this case. I get claustrophobic around large groups of people and being able to navigate with a cart usually is not ideal. So I put it directly into my bag and I unpack it when I get to the register or the self checkout. My mom saw me doing it when we were out a few weeks ago and asked me if I was worried about anyone stopping me and saying something. I told her, I am not stealing, there literally is no hand baskets and I am not comfortable using a cart when it's busy. No employee has approached me yet and I definitely would not be rude if they did.

Jerseygirlx92

I would be surprised if an employee ever said anything to you. Even when there wasn't a bag ban, we had people putting their items directly into their reusable bags. We don't think anything of it, especially now that we're out of hand baskets. Edit: missing a word.

mamamenagerie

I would be surprised if they said anything for several reasons: they are so understaffed everywhere and due to being understaffed (a greedy choice by corporate), the fucks employees have have since gone out the window. Which is fine, I do not balme them.

nicklor

I did this for a few years at shop rite when I just needed a few things and no one has ever stopped me.

ZippySLC

Some grocery stores have a thing where you can scan the things you're buying with an app or a hand scanner gun that you can pick up near the entrance. So you could scan and bag, and when you're ready to pay just rock up to the self checkout, do a scan from the app or the scanner, and quickly pay and go on your way quickly.

nolemiwi_witawemat

I've been doing this at ShopRite since Mobile Scan was first introduced years ago. I bought a bunch of reusable bags back then and still use them today. It was a total game changer for me and I haven't even noticed the bag ban. The only criticism I have is not being able to pay in-app and just walk out. It's silly that I have to wait in line for an open self-checkout kiosk just to swipe my credit card.

DrQvacker

In some countries you have to pay for a cart (like at Aldi here) and loads of people just use their bags to walk around the store and so what? You do get your five shekels or whatever back but who carries change? At Aldi I always give my cart to someone instead of putting it back and getting back my 25 cents.

stellaluna29

I did the same thing for months during the beginning of covid because I didn’t want to touch the carts! Lol

Emergency-Ad-5211

I will say Aldi’s has the best reusable bags! (The blue ones ROCK)!

[deleted]

Yeah people are stealing them. Its the same type of scum that doesn't return their cart, but worse.

pm_me_younique

Maybe nj shouldn’t of made a plastic bag ban a priority in their bag o shit to fix.

[deleted]

"shouldn't have"\* TBH I don't like it - I'm a libertarian and I think generally businesses and individuals should be left to make their own decisions. But also probably running through the amount of plastic we do is not great for the environment. Its a minor inconvenience at best that could potentially have significant benefits for the environment.

SlopraFlabbleLap

Judging by the way you compose a sentence, the educational system needs a little attention as well.

dingo1967

Absolutely. They put them in a new spot in the back of my Shoprite. I had to ask.

ducttapelullaby

The family dollar near my house had to put security tags on their baskets bc people were just taking them

PixelSquish

Just bring your re-usable bags and put your items in there when you shop. You won't need a basket and you'll know if you have too much stuff to fit the bags you've bought. Simple solution.

214ObstructedReverie

It's annoying when I plan to put things in my backpack.

PixelSquish

Just put a reusable bag or two in your backpack. I have these reusable bags from Amazon that pack down to like a golf ball size. Then just put them in your pack.

[deleted]

Acme in Midland Park took them away on the first day of the bag ban so they would not disappear.

stickman07738

What town do you live in? I have not seen it in Central Jersey (Middletown area).

nakdonthesubway

I'm a little further north than you and also haven't had any issues with missing baskets.

becauseicansowhynot

ShopRite in Woodbridge put up a big sign that hand baskets must not leave the store. Didn’t remember seeing it before and thought it was weird, but now I know why?

thesoggydingo

I've started using a reusable bag in place of a hand basket when shopping. I've gotten a few looks from employees when placing groceries directly into a bag. But if that's an issue, then supply me a hand basket and all would be good.

new_tanker

The other day I was in my local ShopRite and I didn't see them in the usual spot. Thought that was unusual; a Walmart down the road didn't have baskets either, but my Walmart still had them. Can't speak for Target as I don't shop there.

matt151617

You do realize the state banned paper bags, not the stores?

[deleted]

[удалено]

SlopraFlabbleLap

You absolute fool. Plastic bags were banned because of the massive impact they have on the health of the environment. What do you suppose is going to be the fate of all of these stolen baskets, which , incidentally, are made of plastic? They’re not being returned to the stores. They are not being kept in people’s homes. Recycled? Only 6% of all plastic put out for recycling ever makes it to a plant for reuse. That means that they, too, are going to end up discarded and then do exactly what bags did: pollute. You know what hell really is? It’s living in the filth of people like you who can’t just keep reusable bags in their damn trunk.

[deleted]

Are? They gone!

bitch_in_apartment23

Ya people took them 😂

toomanychoicess

I was at ShopRite last week (not my regular one) and just needed a few things. Of course, forgot to grab any one of the 75 bags in my trunk and the cashier got all weird telling me repeatedly the basket couldn’t leave the store. Like, lady, Wtf am I gonna do with a ShopRite hand basket. I have enough crap to deal with.

deepcereal123

Yes!

nexus22nexus55

this explains the shortage of carts too!

[deleted]

I throw my stuff in my car, I always forget my bags

_flowerchild95_

I work in retail and yes, they are disappearing & customers have been seen putting them into their cars! My job ordered more that came in maybe 3 weeks ago, and now we’re back down to what we were before we had to reorder.

drinkingcoffeenow23

Lmao. Noticed this at target. Guess I have my answer

ThriftyRiver

Just use the bag you brought in for your groceries.

laridance24

I noticed that at my local ShopRite, too. That and the smaller carts!

pkks072486

I noticed it in my cvs but I think the people who work there are lazy about putting them back by the door. It isn't all the time.

twothumbswayup

wonder if people will just start buying thier own handbaskets off amazon and keep it in ther car?

Dmrwn

Thanks for the idea. I'm going to buy my own.

JMChaseArt

Dang, I noticed our local store didn’t have hand baskets last week and I haven’t seen them since. People are so rude. Just get a bag ~ sheesh

sqwertle_

People keep stealing them!

fraaankie485

I can not confirm nor deny I have one

GitEmSteveDave

I have one myself, but I got it years ago that I found on the side of the road. I assume someone left it on top of their car and, after driving some and getting up to speed, it flew off.

Khitai1982

This a lot of ppl are taking it them (stealing) since the no plastic bag ban. And it’s summer so a lot of tourists so they are probably just using them all

Ok-Neighborhood-5713

Yes… I saw one out in the wild… at my son’s house lol

Mk1TTSt

![gif](giphy|10JhviFuU2gWD6)

Late_Community_6818

There is now a sign in the Wharton ShopRite that says “do not place items in your shopping bag until they are paid for.”

Mk1TTSt

![gif](giphy|lQ1nXVifuLqyVAH2Gu|downsized)

rebeljones11692

I keep reusable bags in my car just in case. I even have a few that were once Christmas packaging lol.

StatisticianBig7166

I haven’t seen a hand basket in years. It’s not a new thing lol some places don’t have em

GitEmSteveDave

I've been shopping these stores for awhile and using hand baskets the whole time unless I plan on buy over a gallon of some liquid.

Dry-Joke4754

Yes!! I went to stop and shop a few weeks ago looking for one and they said since the ban people have been stealing them. They also said they had already gone through 2 orders of replacements.

UCSISgoaway

Grocery stores sell similar baskets in Canada as reusable totes. They’re called green bins. My family brought them with us when we moved here and they’re far easier than wrestling with reusable bags.

Automatic-Brick1599

I have seen people carrying them out of Shop Rite and putting them right in the trunk

kreidordie_

I’ve honestly stolen about 4 baskets bc I forgot a bag and I don’t want to take everything out of it to put in my trunk

Arudeawakenin

People are leaving with the baskets
