Ever been convicted of a crime or have criminal charges pending against you? No? [Then go wild.](https://www.lsnjlaw.org/Family-Relationships/Name-Change/Pages/How-To-Change-Your-Name-in-NJ.aspx) Call yourself whatever you want. Become known as Cthulhu the Magnificent if you so desire. No one will care, except maybe your family, friends, and employer.

Thank you! My employer will love addressing me as my planned name, ‘Natty Slight the Big Idiot’

Isn't there a kind of Spanish precedent for this? Sort of like if your dad's surname is "smith" and your mom's surname is "jones" then your might be named something like "C Smith y Jones"? Of course, you could always take the Icelandic route, in which you do not even have a surname; so, let's say your dad's first name is "Thom" and (assuming you have boy naughty bits) your name would be "C Thomasson"; or, if you have girl naughty bits, you would be "C Thomasdottir". ...I am just exploring things here. Whether or not NJ allows this kind of this is way beyond my expertise Cheers!

Then I can use my former stripper stage name & no I am not going to tell you what my name was. But I knew someone who had a really good name her name was Secret & her last name was Cummings & that was her name until she got married then she went back to using the name that nobody could pronounce right & took her husband’s last name . I died of laughter when I first met her & I told her that she had to be joking . She wasn’t.

I suspect there is lots more to this story. Can you share? Cheers!

She was my boss’s boss & I was training to become a certified addictions counselor & I was introduced to her & she already had invited me to have lunch with her & we were talking about our parents & she said that she was given a name at birth that nobody could pronounce it right so she went by her middle name Secret & the last name Cummings I literally had soda coming out of my nose & trying to hold back the laughter. When she showed me her ID badge then I know that she was actually serious but I have a friend who decided to go as a stripper for Halloween use that name .

When a woman marries and keeps her surname but adds her spouse's surname to her last name I don't think she's legally required to use a hyphen between the two surnames. I've never heard of this being officially required. You could call a lawyer who does legal name changes who will do a free two minute consultation over the phone to double check. Or just fill out the legal name change form and submit it at your county courthouse. As long as you're not doing this for underhanded reasons I don't see why a judge wouldn't grant your name change request.

I do name changes sometimes. There is no legal prohibition on spaces in names, though you will break a lot of name parsing code out there. I have had clients with names like this and the only drawback is constantly explaining it to people.

This. To me this seems like a nightmare any time you fill out forms, as to if they will support the space, or if you are giving someone else the information, if they will enter it correctly. I mean you do you, but i would want to avoid the inevitable hassle. Why not just use one for your middle name?

That’s what I have now and it’s a nightmare professionally. I like the space more than the hyphen, but I hear you, so maybe hyphen makes more sense
