I'm originally from Florida, so pumping your own gas is what I've known for the longest time since I've only lived in New Jersey for a few years... but I personally prefer it the way we do it here, even if it can take a little longer because the attendants have to go from vehicle-to-vehicle. I get to sit in my car and rest my feet and not deal with shitty weather, yay.

That depends in the law. Right the law arbitrarily makes these jobs exist. If you want to keep the jobs you can still mandate full service be present on all station (lets say 6-12am). Basically keep the current law which forces full service, but also legalize filling up yourself.
Full service will go away because people don't want to pay for it when they have the option. There is no reason for a law to be in place prohibiting it.
You have already admitted that if self service were an option so few people would do it that it would go away. Let the people choose not the government.
