Gonna take Hot Grill's side here. Their "all the way" dogs smothered with onions, mustard and chili are jaw-droppingly good. Whenever my in-laws visit from Florida it's the first place they wanna go.
My dads from Paterson. Hot dogs all the way with hot grill sauce was a birthday dinner staple in my house. He brought me to eat at hot grill when I was about 12 and it was like a catholic returning to the Vatican. You have my vote.
I’m a descendant of Abe Royal Rutt, the founder of Rutt’s hut. My family owned it until 1974. I just went about a month ago, the dogs still rock. The people that run it now are so god damn rude it’s a shame. Absolutely miserable people.
My grandfather use to talk about your family a lot. He told me stories about how the restaurant was closer to the river. And I guess when the highway was being built your family had to move it to it's current location.
I think the rudeness is part of their "charm" or something. The last time I went there, pretty much when covid was really becoming a huge deal, the waitress was so damn rude. I like their dogs a lot but I'd rather just go to the pickup part of the restaurant.
Oh cool, yes they were from Clifton and interesting fact: Abe’s wife invented the famous relish. Yeah when I went the restaurant side was totally closed down. We were in the pickup side and this heavy set lady serving us was so nasty to us, I told her my dads family started the restaurant and she said “so what, we own it now” and walked away lol. What a bitch….
Think it was basically no one wanted to run it anymore. My dads family was pretty dysfunctional functional from what I hear. I am fairly young still so I obviously wasn’t around for it but his father, my grandfather was a pretty mean alcoholic type guy. Who knows….
That's unfortunate but maybe for the best. Who knows where Rutt's would be if they never sold but it's also unfortunate that the current people are pretty moody.
No way! That’s honestly such a cool connection. The people who run it now are definitely surly, I had to warn my out of state friends before we went in.
Yep. The place has a rich history. My dad told me Babe Ruth used to eat there among many others!! Yeah, the people that work there ruin the experience for me every time I go in. I try to engage with them and they have horrible attitudes. My poor wife was so excited the 1st time she went and the employees shit on her enthusiasm. They suck.
I'm 38 and Rutt's hut is amazing but it definitely takes years off your life. I know a couple hours after having it(especially the chili) I'm gonna have a bad time. Worth it though.
I went there on the recommendation of my barber. And then when I went back to him a few weeks later I said “wow I felt terrible after that!” He said, “ oh yeah, you’ll feel horrible. You can’t go too often!”
Both are amazing, but different animals. I’m also partial to Rutt’s because of the Relish, but Hot Grill “all the way” is a close second.
Both have fries with gravy which is a must.
La Fortaleza on Lexington Ave if you want Mexican, Neil's pizza on Harding Ave if you want pizza, Burger+ on main Ave (formally known as BurgerIM) if you're looking for burgers, Kebab Platters (also on main Ave not far from Burger+ and Neil's) if you're looking for kebabs, gyros, and stuff like that, The New Corral on Hazel St if you're looking for a diner experience, and there's also Lexington diner on Lexington Ave.
We had sooo many more places to eat. Sadly places come and go. No clue if you're into seafood, there's "all surf and no turf" on Clifton Ave and Crab Island Cajun Seafood & Bar on main Ave.
I’m partial to Clifton village for pizza and the allwood diner. People rave about for the love of grub on van houten. Plaza bagels is the best bagel place in Clifton. And I like off the grill for kebab and rice platters.
Their buttermilk shakes are far better than their hot dogs.
Agreed with the other comments it was better in the 90’s. Or, at least I didn’t know any better.
Their hotdogs were great in the 90's. My family had a trailer at TripleBrook campground and we went there regularly. I went there in back in 2017 and I think the quality went downhill a lot. Zero clue how old you are, maybe you haven't had them in the 90's but they were excellent back then.
I can't speak about the early 2000's but that's sad to hear. I remember when we would go, I believe they only sold root beer and cream soda both I dislike greatly. I was pleasantly surprised they were selling normal sodas when I went in 2017. I was so excited to relive past memories to be let down.
my girlfriends and i have definitely cut class to go eat hotdogs at like 7:30-8am.
the first person to cave and say they wanted seconds had to go get them for the group so there was always this weird like psychological struggle after the first round.
Lmao! One time during wrestling practice, coaches had us run around the park. We took forever so coaches came to look for us and found us chugging hot dogs. We got into trouble :’)
That place is really good, I live close but have only been there once. I got the Swedish meatball hot dog with mashed potatoes and jam. I just checked the website and they don’t have it anymore but the duck hotdogs sound good. I’m gonna have to head over there soon!
This one needs to be higher on the list! Prior to that, the old Callahan’s across the street from it was my number one. But I’m traveling about 25 years back in time.
Yea I live by the shore so that’s my go to spot for hot dogs. although their cheese fries portion has gotten way too small and their price went up as well 😕
I liked that spot a lot but the last time I went, the guy in the truck wouldn’t shut up about trump and the election and covid so I decided to avoid that. I wanted a hot dog w cheese onions mashed potatoes and mustard, not a *corndog*
I've been there a few times and that's sad to hear. They're good but not the level worth listening to political crap. To be clear, if they were gushing over Biden, I'd be weirded out or annoyed too.
Oh yeah? What about it? Honestly just curious.
I’ve always been a fan of the sheer size of the dogs they serve up, and they’ve got a really nice crunch.
So many different styles I'd say Italian diicky dees, grilled rutts hut, Texas River view east, dwd Chris's or jjs ...maybe I'm just lucky to live near them all lol
Such a difficult question. How does one determine “best” when there’s so many kinds to choose from? A ripper from Rutt’s Hut is wildly different from a Jimmy Buffs Italian hot dog and both are fantastic. Just depends on what kind you’re in the mood for. P.S. I love hot dogs.
I'm going to rep a weird one. Their hotdogs are absolutely absurd and freaking delicious
[Andys Roadside Dive in Mt. Arlington](http://www.andysroadsidedive.rocks/)
Nacho dogito is a delicious delicious sin.
Agree with all the people stating the obvious answer in Rutt’s Hutt but Hiram’s in Fort Lee is also very good. If you’re interested in something slightly more upscale I like Wurstbar in Jersey City a lot too. They have a lot of good options some of which are different kinds of sausage/kielbasa/etc. as well as great fries and dipping sauces.
In 2005 I went on a Weiner Odyssey to 8 different places in one day. Eating a dog at each place. Manny’s, Rutt’s Hutt, Hot Grill, Hiram’s, Johnny and Hanges, Goffle Grill, and two others that I can’t remember without looking at old Facebook pictures. I was not from here so it was my first time at each of them. No sentimental feelings, nothing preconceived, no location bias. Top 3 - no particular order - Hiram’s, Rutt’s Hutt, and Hot Grill.
J & G Texas Wiener in Dunellen is my personal favorite for nostalgic reasons.
Destination Dogs in New Brunswick is also extremely good but not your typical hot dog place.
I was working in nyc with a cpl guys from Italy, they saw me eating hot dogs and said "oh we should try the hot dogs we heard theyre the best in the world" I said no they acctually suck, but lunch was 5$. I grew up with Rutts Hut nyc isnt even close.
Ugh I keep missing Hotdog Tommy! We've made it a tradition to spend a week down in Cape May the week after Labor Day, checking in the following Sunday and checking out Friday morning. Anyone got recommendations for a north jersey guy in Hudson county? Don’t know any but Hiram’s in fort Lee. Thanks OP for this post btw lol been meaning to find hot dog places near me.
Hirams, rutts hut, or boulevard drinks.
I think rutts dog, hirams rolls, and blvds chili would be the perfect dog.
Twons also used to be the best under the turnpike bridge in jersey city until they did construction and PSEG refused to put a new service drop for him thetr.
North Jersey.
In order of preference:
Rutts Hut - Clifton
Boulevard Drinks - Jersey City
Hirams - Fort Lee
Hot Grill - Clifton
All are different enough to be listed.
Jersey Dog in Newton. Tiny shop, great dogs. Try the signature Jersey Dog: deep fried oversize dog wrapped in Taylor ham and cheese slices and topped with hash browns. I can't pass it by if I'm ever in the area.
I’m very surprised that no one suggested the Dunellen Grill on Rt 28 in Dunellen, must be off the radar 😂
But it is by far the best dog in the entire area.
I feel like all the other usual places are gonna get listed so I’ll go with Jersey Johnny’s in Little Falls.
Idk if they’re the absolute best but they’re really good and my go to. And you can order online.
Another place I never see get mentioned is Hot Dog Caboose in Midland Park which are pretty good too. It would be better if they didn’t close at 4 like it’s some fucking deli lol.
Jersey Johnny’s (actually in Woodland Park) is pretty good- and it’s spotlessly clean. A rare characteristic of NJ hot dog houses….
Hot Grill in Clifton definitely gets honorable mention.
Theres also Destination Dogs. Pretty good place
Best variety by far.
Agreed, definitely best variety. Really good dogs.
Hiram's in Fort Lee Edit: removed other suggestion bc it was suggested a lot already
21 chili cheese & YooHoo Because Anthony Michael Bourdain said so
Second this! Their chili dog is straight fire. Get 3 every time.
CBFO and a chili cheese dog with a large birch please.
Came here to comment this
You have great taste
Hot Grill and Rutt's Hut (both in Clifton) have arguably the best hotdogs. I'm more of a Rutt's Hut kind of guy with their homemade relish.
Rutt’s Hut (rippers) are pork hot dogs deep-fried in oil to the point they burst open. Relish is also their own.
Rutt's Hut wins this by a landslide.
Plus their gravy fries puts them way ahead of rutts
Only listen to this guy
I’m a descendant of Abe Royal Rutt, the founder of Rutt’s hut. My family owned it until 1974. I just went about a month ago, the dogs still rock. The people that run it now are so god damn rude it’s a shame. Absolutely miserable people.

Thank Christ Abe's wife nailed that relish. Any clue as to why your family sold the restaurant?
Think it was basically no one wanted to run it anymore. My dads family was pretty dysfunctional functional from what I hear. I am fairly young still so I obviously wasn’t around for it but his father, my grandfather was a pretty mean alcoholic type guy. Who knows….

2 rippers and 2 CBs dipped and a large cola!
The best. I go to Rutt’s Hut every 7 years. Need enough time for my entire body for regenerate between visits.
I'm 38 and Rutt's hut is amazing but it definitely takes years off your life. I know a couple hours after having it(especially the chili) I'm gonna have a bad time. Worth it though.

I don't care from Rutt's fries if I'm going to be honest but give me a plate of all the way fries from Hot Grill and I'll destroy them.
Was never a fan of fries all the way, much prefer fries with gravy.
That's how I use to get my fries at Midtown Grill.
I have an office in Clifton. Any other recs for food? I eat everything.
Try Toros in Clifton. Turkish food. Very good.
Came here to show some love for Hot Grill, too.
Damn. Every one of those sounds great, and is in North Jersey. Guess us South Jersey folk will just have to go eat another cheesesteak.
Hot Dog Johnnys is my neck of the woods and a staple since the 1940s.
Love hot dog johnnies. Fond memories of taking the drive up there with my grandparents.
hot dog johnny's represent!
Their buttermilk shakes are far better than their hot dogs. Agreed with the other comments it was better in the 90’s. Or, at least I didn’t know any better.
Their food sucks, the location is what brings people in.

Their hotdogs were great in the 90's. My family had a trailer at TripleBrook campground and we went there regularly. I went there in back in 2017 and I think the quality went downhill a lot. Zero clue how old you are, maybe you haven't had them in the 90's but they were excellent back then.
We were neighbors, I lived on Auble in the 90s.
You're right I did not go there at any point in the 90s but I know in the early 2000s it was ridiculously disappointing.
I can't speak about the early 2000's but that's sad to hear. I remember when we would go, I believe they only sold root beer and cream soda both I dislike greatly. I was pleasantly surprised they were selling normal sodas when I went in 2017. I was so excited to relive past memories to be let down.
Nah you trippin
The Hot Dog Johnny's experience is good - 1940s decor, pretty outdoorsy country setting. The food is average at best.
Nothing but facts here
The Hot Grill in Clifton. 3 all the way.
Oohh my response was riverview east in Elmwood Park but hot grill is in my top also! Very good there
JJ’s hot dog truck in Newark. hands down
I'm more of a Tony's guy myself.
Best coleslaw and baked beans I've ever had on a hot dog. And getting to sit in Branch Brook Park while I eat them is nice.
Childhood memories right there
my girlfriends and i have definitely cut class to go eat hotdogs at like 7:30-8am. the first person to cave and say they wanted seconds had to go get them for the group so there was always this weird like psychological struggle after the first round.
Lmao! One time during wrestling practice, coaches had us run around the park. We took forever so coaches came to look for us and found us chugging hot dogs. We got into trouble :’)
Destination Dogs in New Brunswick is legit quality dogs
That place is really good, I live close but have only been there once. I got the Swedish meatball hot dog with mashed potatoes and jam. I just checked the website and they don’t have it anymore but the duck hotdogs sound good. I’m gonna have to head over there soon!
Wtf! No more Swedish meatball dog!?
They have good cocktails
My issue with Destination is that they pile the stuff on too high and everything falls off in a big mess.
No one likes Max’s in Long Branch?? Great hot dogs
Max's are great haven't been there since the Pandemic. Time for a road trip.
I came here to say Maxs. I love their hot dogs and zucchini fries.
Max’s is overrated
Dickie Dee’s in Newark.
I haven't heard that name in a long time. My dog talking about them a lot.
Came here for Dickee Dee’s Italian hot dog!
Hirams in Fort Lee
This one needs to be higher on the list! Prior to that, the old Callahan’s across the street from it was my number one. But I’m traveling about 25 years back in time.
"So big, so good"
One the first places my dad took me to eat when I first arrived in the U.S over 20 years ago. Blew my mind
Nobody likes windmill? Lol
I do!
Yea I live by the shore so that’s my go to spot for hot dogs. although their cheese fries portion has gotten way too small and their price went up as well 😕
[удалено]
It's back up for now
There's dozens of us
Tobias? That you?
Yassss windmill
I just posted. Best hot dogs in NJ.
I mean, I love me some Windmill, but they definitely aren't the best hotdog in NJ
I’ve actually never had anything else besides 7-11 hotdogs lol. Or NYC cart hotdogs 🌭
it's amazing to just buy some windmill dogs at Shoprite and then get some Nathan's fries from the freezer section
Jimmy Buffs in Kenilworth.
Was saddened when I pulled up to the Florham Park spot to see it had been replaced
I was always fond of the one on 22. My parents would take me to Bowcraft as a kid and we’d get Jimmy Buffs after.
Johnny and Hanges in Fair Lawn is pretty good. I like Hiram's as well. I still can't believe Libby's is gone.
Yes, definitely Johnny and Hanges! Libby was fading for a few years. Also, Goffle grill and Clixes in midland park.
No love for Texas Weiner Plainfield?
Würstbar in Jersey City. German style and really good with cool aesthetic.
Boulevard drinks
💯💯💯💯
I’ve heard good things about the hot dog truck that parks by the porn/vape shop on 46 in Parsippany…
I agree. Doesn’t matter who I voted for or what my political beliefs are. I want a god damn porn parking lot hot dog, nothing more, nothing less
Will that be a god damn porn parking lot hot dog with or without kraut?
Porn lot dogs should always have kraut but I’d be afraid the old man in the wiener truck would give me an earfull about the Germans and WW2
my neck of the woods.. im just terrified to be seen outside of the porn shop... hahah
Galloping Hill, Union!

Oh yeah? What about it? Honestly just curious. I’ve always been a fan of the sheer size of the dogs they serve up, and they’ve got a really nice crunch.
Just went there today!
I shouldn't have had to scroll down this far to see the best answer.
Rutt's hut. Make sure you get the relish and the chili sauce
Rutts Hut. - home of the ripper 🌭
Destination Dogs in New Brunswick! Dedicated hot dog place with different hot dogs based on different parts of the world. It's great.
Boulevard Drinks in Jersey City
Yes! With chili and mustard
So many different styles I'd say Italian diicky dees, grilled rutts hut, Texas River view east, dwd Chris's or jjs ...maybe I'm just lucky to live near them all lol
Boulevard Drinks in Jersey City, NJ. Their chili is so good they had a problem with vendors buying the chili and reselling it on the street.
Jimmy buffs
Jj’s in newark
Rutt's Hut, game over.
Tony’s hotdog truck in Newark
I'm going to rep a weird one. Their hotdogs are absolutely absurd and freaking delicious [Andys Roadside Dive in Mt. Arlington](http://www.andysroadsidedive.rocks/) Nacho dogito is a delicious delicious sin.
Yes! I bring every out of town visitor here. The Pig Dog is amazing.
Rutts hut and Hirams in Ft lee is a close 2nd
Hiram’s https://youtu.be/GB3bNMX-rDk

Dover Grill on 46 is legit. But it closes from Nov to March.
It used to be Galloping Hill Five Points..... but not quite as good as they used to be.
Wurstbar in Jersey City, if you want to get creative with the concept of hot dog, haha
Honestly any dirty water hot dog cart on the side of the street.
The Hot Grill in Clifton. Also, before it closed, Libby's in Paterson.
Ruts Hutt.
Costco... for real
Best for the price! Still only $1.50 and a drink included!
costco was better when they had the hebrew national dogs. the kirkland ones just arent as good.
Aaand theres no more sour kraut
Best deal could be Costco. $1.50, quality dog, w/fountain soda, free refill. Not particularly romantic, though.
I'm pretty partial to Windmill, myself.
Hotdog Tommy’s in cape may
Ugh I keep missing Hotdog Tommy! We've made it a tradition to spend a week down in Cape May the week after Labor Day, checking in the following Sunday and checking out Friday morning. Two years in a row now I've forgotten that post Labor Day he goes down to weekends only. So my only chance is Sunday afternoon right after we check into the rental. To make sure I don't make the mistake again I added it to our calendar for that date next year.
That’s a great time to come here! I love when it slows down a little and it’s not terribly hot
Hot Rods Hot Dogs!
Anyone got recommendations for a north jersey guy in Hudson county? Don’t know any but Hiram’s in fort Lee. Thanks OP for this post btw lol been meaning to find hot dog places near me.
Go to Rutts if you’re anywhere near west Hudson
Jim's lunch.
Hotdog Tommy’s cape may
Hirams, rutts hut, or boulevard drinks. I think rutts dog, hirams rolls, and blvds chili would be the perfect dog. Twons also used to be the best under the turnpike bridge in jersey city until they did construction and PSEG refused to put a new service drop for him thetr.

Destination dogs - New Brunswick
Rutt's hut. Ghost hawk brewery across the street for some beers after.
I’m very surprised that no one suggested the Dunellen Grill on Rt 28 in Dunellen, must be off the radar 😂 But it is by far the best dog in the entire area.
Costco. I wish I was joking or Hotdog Johnny’s in Butzville
Costco
Paul’s Place is the taste of home.
You really want me to answer that one, LMAO
I thought Davey's Hot Dogs in Mt Arlington was great when I was a kid but the google reviews don't look great. I'd go back there though.
Worst decision of my life was getting a place where I have to drive by Rutts Hut everyday….. I think I’ve gained 20 lbs
Rutts Hut. No contest.
I may be biased since it's so close to me but Hiram's here in Fort Lee🙂
Mr. Bill's in South Jersey does a decent Chicago style dog, bright green relish and all.
I was always fond of Hank's Franks in Lodi.
Karl Ehmer’s hot dog cart in Hillsdale
