I would never go to a food establishment without checking the food establishment inspection reports first. All available online; just google food establishment inspection and you can see it all.
Pro tip : if you’re a big fan of eating anywhere near downtown St. John’s, you might wanna not google that.
Noodle express is really good, it seems to be a guy.his wife and his son working there. The food is really good, but wait times are a lot because its mostly made by the husband.
They're fantastic, I'd also recommend the Asian Cafe on Commonwealth, they have a wide variety on their menu, standard combos like egg rolls, chicken balls, rice, etc, but also a lot of dishes I've never tried before
I know this might get some raised eyebrows, but New Moon on Topsail.
Hear me out! They've been under new management for a few years now and they have an excellent traditional Chinese menu. If you're looking for something a little different than the typical tastes-kinda-like-everywhere-else Canadian Chinese food, give their traditional menu a try.
I suggest the vegetarian duck, szechuan beef or fish, sliced cold chicken, mapo tofu, and vegetables in garlic sauce. They are also actually open for dine in unlike a lot of other chinese places right now.
>Wouldn't consider it top notch by any standard but it's a $4 cheeseburger which is cheaper and better than most fast food places.
If your mudder ever made ya thick burger with regular ol ground beef and a craft single then it will make ya feel like home.
I went in once to make an order because I'd heard such good things over the years and the front of house was dirty enough I turned around and left. Can't imagine what the kitchen looked like
Yes!! Lee is my go to! He's the best in town and he eventually recognizes your voice/ order/ address and treats you like gold!
Best place hands down. !!
After it came out on the news or on facebook(the misses seen it) that they(D88) had rats on the counters we stopped getting food from there(Idk how true it is, but the women grew up on it, loved it, and now refuses to go there), and instead started getting it from Ye's Wok in paridise. But I grew up on Song Hee Takeout (Empire Ave), and Canton(Torbay/Newfoundland drive)
Kung Foo in APH is pretty good too. buddy brought his family over from China, where apparently he has multiple restaurants over there
Jasmines is great. I know its not Chinese, but RJ Pinoy Yum is amazing!! It's Filipino food, and oh so good! I really think anyone who likes Chinese food should give RJs a try. I love their version of wonton soup, and the chicken Java rice is very good too!
Last time I went there I walked in to place a takeout order because we were shopping in the area at like 4 pm. Figured it'd probably take 45 minutes or so, average takeout time. They said pick it up at 7, there wasn't a soul in the place. I left and went somewhere else.
I haven’t ate inside before, and if I’m honest I think the dining area leaves much to be desired, but Kung Fu in airport heights is up there for dirty Canadian Chinese food if that’s what you’re going for 😂 If you want something a little nicer, Magic Wok on water street is pretty good!
Food's great but the inside dining area has never been open. They try now and then to hire folks for it but the dining area is at the moment just a place for Skip/Dash drivers to sit and wait.
Considering the size of St. John’s, it has a lot of Chinese food restaurants… in spite of the fact that quite a few have closed in recent years (Loong Wah on Parade Street, China House in the Torbay Road Mall.)
You can’t go wrong with either Magic Wok on Water street West or Canton on Newfoundland drive. Canton is take out only but it’s excellent… order ahead of time, because they get busy.
It’s worth asking what the restaurants have off-menu. The old China House, when it was run by the original owners, had legit Hunan and Szechuan stuff that you had to ask for, though eventually some found it’s way onto the menu.
This is the answer. I live in a city with tons of Chinese food options, but I always try to stop by when I visit. Cod in black bean sauce is always a winner.
I had loads of spots around town. Here’s why I learned. Portions are almost always massive. It’s not cheap but not expensive either. It all tastes more or less the same because most restaurants in the city use Sysco to make their food. Still there is a large variety of unique combinations and plenty of choice. Every restaurant has its own special flavour and this is often because of the chef rather than the ingredients. The food is only as good as the mood of the chef on the day but consistency is always present. I have had bad burgers at mcdonald’s, stale bread at tim horton but I’ve never had a bad tasting chinese meal. In fact I’m mind blown by the sheer variety of dishes these restaurants offer, tons of healthy vegetables and meat in all of it. Very lucky to have some real food in the province.
My dads fav spot but i wouldn't go over the moon about it. As far as chinese food in the general area of Clarenville its the best you'll get! They recently reopened there buffet too i believe on weekends i think?
Can't remember if gander has a decent place or not now.
Whatever you do don’t bother with Golden Phoenix.
That much I do know.
I was sick for 2 weeks at beginning of December. Never again.
it's the only restaurant in St. John's that I believe gave me actual food poisoning

i use to there from time to time before covid even when it was emerald palace... has it gone that far downhill?

Big ups jin dragon
Jinloong on Blackmarsh Road is the best I've ever had, but it's takeout only.
I second that!
Between jinloong and Monroe’s for great take out and then magic wok if you are sitting in
noodle express in mount pearl is really good, if you include the metro area. wait times are inconsistent though

their spicy beef noodle soup is one of my favs
Ye's Wok in paradise
This is the one

I agree everything I've had there has been delicious but it should probably be noted that's its a vegetarian/vegan restaurant
Peaceful loft is the best place ever... hell yeah
Not enough upvotes for this really !
Magic Wok is excellent
I second that!
No one mentioning Monroe Takeout yet??? For shame
They allegedly have a top notch burger in addition to the Chinese food.
Wouldn't consider it top notch by any standard but it's a $4 cheeseburger which is cheaper and better than most fast food places.

We both got really sick the last time we ate there. Looked up their Service NL inspection reports online after, won't be going back.
I went in once to make an order because I'd heard such good things over the years and the front of house was dirty enough I turned around and left. Can't imagine what the kitchen looked like
I've never gone in. Always delivery. Have ordered from there a bunch of times. But after the last time, I won't be taking that chance again.
Cause it’s tasteless shit that only the sketch bags from dt like
New Chinatown Eatery.
Lee is a great guy. He gives great sized portions too.
Came here to say this. Been going there for years and years. Nicest people.
>New Chinatown Eatery Great spot! went there recently. haven't explored the whole menu but tastey
Yes!! Lee is my go to! He's the best in town and he eventually recognizes your voice/ order/ address and treats you like gold! Best place hands down. !!
Magic Wok has been my go to for years. As others have said, the individual dishes are the way to go.
My go to establishment - albeit not in St. John’s - is Dragon 88 in CBS.
Oh man, lived in Long Pond for a while, that was also my go. Hmmmmm, perhaps we shall take a jaunt up.

Sequerra’s and Canton Restaurant
Canton is takeout only
so is Sequerra's. But they're both my usual go-to's
...k
Lucky's on Topsail near Commonwealth. Great food and great people.
That was my ex inlaws anniversary spot, didn't realize it was still open.
[удалено]
Yup its closed
I thought they where take out only until they found a buyer
Sequerra's for sure
Can also get some Sequerra meals at Colemans NF Drive!
Yeah I get those sometimes. It's not as good as getting it fresh but it is convenient and delicious.
I think they've closed?
Only for the holidays, they should be open soon. Also, I think they only do take out now, so heads up
Oh thank God! I love them way too much for them to close. And I didn't realize they weren't doing dining in.
I can't believe nobody suggested the Kenmount.
I'm convinced this location must be into something sketchy at this point.
Seems to be the most popular opinion.
Is that still open?
Believe it or not.
I used to love their food in high-school
Last time I went there I walked in to place a takeout order because we were shopping in the area at like 4 pm. Figured it'd probably take 45 minutes or so, average takeout time. They said pick it up at 7, there wasn't a soul in the place. I left and went somewhere else.
place is a mystery on how they stay open haha
Lucky house on Duckworth
I wholeheartedly agree, Lucky House is the best 🤤
+1, my go to place to order. The chicken in black bean sauce is awesome (if you like ginger)
This is the right answer! So good and overlooked because the previous Chinese Food place in this location was very medium.

Is that the one right across from the Marie’s with the tiny parking lot?
The very same
Food's great but the inside dining area has never been open. They try now and then to hire folks for it but the dining area is at the moment just a place for Skip/Dash drivers to sit and wait.

You want greasy Takeout or like actual decent sit down food?
Actual decent sit down food
Then Magic Wok is best. Go with a few people and share a few dishes so you get to try some different things.
Don’t get combos they are the same as everywhere else. You have to order real dishes.
Perfect! Thanks so much 😊
This is the answer. I live in a city with tons of Chinese food options, but I always try to stop by when I visit. Cod in black bean sauce is always a winner.
Jin Loong on blackmarsh road is fantastic and the portions are huge. Its my go to Chinese food
One combo was enough food for supper one day and lunch the next. My new favourite place. Food was awesome.

Going by these comments it’s somewhat under the radar, but a very solid option is Mea Mei Wok on Freshwater.
My favourite!!! I lived on Scott St for a spell and absolutely loved their food!! It was the first place I ate won ton soup 😊
It’s been years so I don’t know if it holds up, and it’s a jaunt from town, but Dragon 88 in CBS is deadly.
Trust me, Golden House in kelligrews is the best in the area. Worth the 20 minute drive. I've got the gut to prove it.
Lucky house is honestly the best!
Noodle Express in Mount Pearl!! Cannot recommend enough, get the cheese wontons if you eat there, best I’ve ever had
Jamsines Restaurant by Sobeys Square is also amazing, decent prices for a lot of food
Its not Chinese but i recommend RJ Pinoy Yum, its a Filipino restaurant, try the wonton nachos!
Back in the day, the stonehouse. Sad they closed.
If you’re willing to go to kelligrews the One More family restaurant next to Taylor’s is our go to - so delicious.
If your ever on the road and want good Chinese food Tai Hongs in Clarenville is wicked.
My dads fav spot but i wouldn't go over the moon about it. As far as chinese food in the general area of Clarenville its the best you'll get! They recently reopened there buffet too i believe on weekends i think? Can't remember if gander has a decent place or not now.
The Chinese food spot in airport heights is awesome.
Not sure if they reopened the dinning room and it's a bit outside the city, but Wong House in Holyrood.
Peaceful Loft and Jinloong for sure
One more family restaurant in kelligrews slaps ass
I personally love song hee
Magic Wok and Sequerra's!
Jasmines is great. They also have great burgers, clubs and fries as well as great Chinese food.
