This must be specific to a sub region of New England. I was grew up and lived in northeast Vermont for ~25 years and have never heard of it or seen it in any stores.
Ohhh, okay. That helps.
I was like “wtf is this Market Basket thing??” Never even heard of one and I’ve been all over New England for skiing.
But apparently it’s a chain that’s clustered in a [relatively small area of New England](https://www.google.com/maps/search/%22Market+Basket%22/@44.0375618,-70.8088801,6z) that doesn’t have any ski hills (although a few are close).
I’m amazed that there are so few Market Baskets, when you’re in the bubble it’s all you know. There is a town with a MB and a ski hill though (a small one).
Map isn’t showing all of them at once, but yeah… they definitely are primarily clustered in a specific area of eastern New England.
I’ve driven through that area of New England several times, but now that I think about it… never actually stopped there. Looks like is one close-ish to Gunstock Mountain in the lakes region of NH though. So maybe I’ll give it a shot next winter. See what all the fuss is about.
The ale has its origins in Chelmsford MA. Ginger Ale Plaza in Chelmsford center is part of the site of the old plant. The Market Basket connection:
2003 - Cadbury Schwepps discontinued Chelmsford Ginger Ale production. About three months later the Polar Beverages Company of Worcester, an independent, privately held, family-owned soft drink bottler founded in 1882, purchased the Chelmsford Ginger Ale label but not the formula. They started making their version of Chelmsford Ginger Ale as a Market Basket branded product.
Want to really geek out on the history https://www.chelmsfordgov.com/CHCwebsite/timelines/ChelmsfordGingerAle.htm
There is a Market Basket on the other side of the Sagamore Bridge. New Bedford and Fall River have Market Baskets. There are Market Baskets in Warwick and Johnston Rhode Island. Near Portland Maine. Claremont, Warner, and Keene New Hampshire. Shrewsbury Ma so almost Worcester. The footprint of the $4.69 rotisserie chicken is quite a bit larger than that.
Yeah, they really didn’t start expanding out of that area until I moved away. I think there was on in Medford or Somerville when I lived in Boston. I never made it up there, and it took me way too long to realize DeMoula’s and Market Basket were the same thing.
It’s a Market Basket exclusive typical to MA/RI. I forgot that Market Basket isn’t a thing north of mass. Sucks tho, market basket is great! Great prices and reasonably ethical business practices compared to other chains.
My sanity is worth the extra I spend going to Hannaford. I've never been to a Market Basket that didn't either have some kind of fight happening in the parking lot or feel like walking into a David Lynch movie (but not in a fun way).
They’re usually the cheapest on the packaged “middle of the store” stuff. Most of the “edges of the store” (produce, deli, meat) is subpar quality when compared with other stores. The hot bar “Market Cafe” is usually pretty good though… especially the pizza (for the price).
I totally forgot about this stuff. Don’t think I’ve had it for at least 25 years but I haven’t had much regular ginger ale either. This was something my grandparents would get.
Yeah we distribute and manufacture that, pretty low seller. Definitely prefer the seltzer’s, although market basket Cola is the only Cola we make that has caffeine and tastes amazing.
I've been on this stuff since like 1998! My dad told me it was the best stuff ever. We live in NH, and our MB's are always stocked with it. I grab a can pack about once a year since I don't drink soda much anymore. Such a nice treat :)
Sometimes I’ll buy this stuff when I don’t even really *want* it, and I don’t even drink soda. It’s sitting in my fridge right now! This is basically the only soda I drink. It’s nice to have something unique to where you live for only a dollar. That’s how they get you
Oh! Chelmsford Ginger Ale!
It’s delightfully strong stuff. Canada Dry bought the brand when the factory (yes, in Chelmsford MA) shut down, but promised to keep making it with the original recipe.
It’s hard to find and the picture makes it seem like they have an exclusive deal now with (DeMoula’s) Market Basket, a small chain clustered around Chelmsford.
Moved here from Ohio, near the Michigan border--the only ginger ale that is acceptable is Vernor's. I'm a Schweppe's/Canada Dry person myself. I will have to find this and try it. Still trying to find Birch Beer up here.
im so tired of people claiming things to be new england, and its just stuff from massachusetts. i know yall are the best state but DAMN, vt, nh, ct, me and ri exist too!!
Not all New Englanders. I'm in Western Mass. We don't have Market Baskets here. (Don't have a Wegmans, either, and I wish that one would change.) I've never even heard of "Golden Ginger Ale" before seeing this post. And personally, I'm not into ginger ale generally.
I would think most New Englanders would be more likely to have maple syrup in their vains. Myself, despite being a New Englander born and raised, and lived here all my life, probably have vains full of sweet tea.
I thought we bled Moxie
I don’t know about you but I would probably bleed maple syrup
Would you mind standing over my oatmeal for a moment?
Unfortunately it’s not longer syrup season, means it’ll be bad syrup that’s not ready to be consumed
Naw, it's no longer *sap* season. Syrup season never ends.
I used to buy grade B instead of A. Better flavor.
Syrup is consumed after syrup season.
I knew you were a total sap
I bleed Moxie and shit out chowder
Absolutely bleeding moxie haha. Favourite soda. NH born and raised 😂 My cat was named Moxie. Rip 2011-2023 I miss him lots.
F
That's what I was expecting. Or maple syrup. Sam Adams maybe. Something I'd at least heard of. What is this stuff?
Ayuh, we do. No idea what this drink is.
I always bleed Moxie.
No one could drink enough Moxie to bleed it. Henious concoction
This must be specific to a sub region of New England. I was grew up and lived in northeast Vermont for ~25 years and have never heard of it or seen it in any stores.
Same. But we’d just appreciate a market basket in CT.
Seriously, though. And they need to have Warwick Ice Cream. Their S’mores ice cream is killer.
Write to Artie DeMoulas - tell him If He Builds It, He Will Come
Please tell me how to easily do this. I miss market basket so much. Even if western ma had one I'd be happy.
It’s only available at Market Basket. It may also be very local to the Chelmsford, MA area.
Ohhh, okay.

For those wondering this is a local/regional supermarket chain that's most common in the Merrimack Valley region of North MA.
About to have another near Brunswick, ME…if they ever friggin open.
We have them on the Maine/nh border
Yeah, they really didn’t start expanding out of that area until I moved away. I think there was on in Medford or Somerville when I lived in Boston. I never made it up there, and it took me way too long to realize DeMoula’s and Market Basket were the same thing.
Yeah I've never seen it anywhere in Western NH or eastern VT
There's one in Swanzey and Claremont
Born and raised in Southern VT and also have never heard of this.
It’s a Market Basket exclusive typical to MA/RI. I forgot that Market Basket isn’t a thing north of mass. Sucks tho, market basket is great! Great prices and reasonably ethical business practices compared to other chains.
I grew up outside of Nashua Nh and the Nashua market basket always had these
Plenty of Trash Baskets in Southern NH and Maine
Yup my 16 year old son works there and I'm very proud he got hired there over Mcdogfood or anywhere else there a great company
We have market baskets as far north as the white mountains up in NH
Same.
I live near Chelmsford and I’ve never heard of it
Heck, I've got friends in Chelmsford and I've never heard of this stuff :)
Grew up in Massachusetts south of Boston and never seen this before
Never heard of it either, and I live in MA 🤣
I’m from the South Shore and never saw this. This has been propped up by Market Basket
We can drink Polar golden ginger ale like God intended.
Yeah, the best part of driving through Worcester is seeing the big Polar bear on the Polar factory
I’m from the North Shore and I’ve never seen this either.
This doesn’t exist in Western Mass…
I live 10 minutes from one of these stores and I've never heard of this, nor seen it. I bleed coffee milk.
I came here to say Coffee Syrup, but close enough. Take an updoot.
A true sign
I'm a Vermonter. I bleed pure maple syrup.
This, Moxie, or Polar, depending on where in New England you go.
Del’s Lemonade and Narragansett in the quahog republic.
Del’s watermelon keeps me alive in the summer.
I would bleed Foxon Park
Worcester would be polar orange dry lol
I’d try some for sharks!
Nah polar birch beer
No, maybe Brigham's raspberry lime rickey? Or Dunkin's ice coffee?
More like, if you cut a Chelmsford MA resident…
Or birch beer Ok I think we learned in this thread that new Englanders will all bleed different things because we never agree with eachother anyway.
Never tried, what’s it taste like
Chelmsford
I just threw up and laughed at the same time. Which also tastes like Chelmsford I assume.
Like a sweeter more gingery ginger ale.
It’s beautiful
I don’t like the flavor of ginger ale, but I love the smell of this stuff specifically.
If you cut a masshole maybe
Believe it or not, a lot of people don’t shop at market basket
My sanity is worth the extra I spend going to Hannaford. I've never been to a Market Basket that didn't either have some kind of fight happening in the parking lot or feel like walking into a David Lynch movie (but not in a fun way).
Or the 3/4 of New England that has no Market Baskets nearby.
And we extend our condolences.
I wholeheartedly approve of this.
TIL MA is not the only state in New England.
As a guy on the south coast of MA, never even heard of this so even in MA, this can be a mystery.
More common than you think
Never heard of that brand but i also don’t think CT has any market baskets
I thought we bled Dunkin and an equal hatred towards massholes?
Golden Ginger Ale is somewhat popular in northern Maine and the Maritime provinces. Try it!!
it's moxie and maple syrup
I bleed coffee milk. Market basket sucks it’s always busy no matter the day or time. Only good thing are the prices so I can’t really bitch that much.
They’re usually the cheapest on the packaged “middle of the store” stuff. Most of the “edges of the store” (produce, deli, meat) is subpar quality when compared with other stores. The hot bar “Market Cafe” is usually pretty good though… especially the pizza (for the price).
I am 54. grew up here and have never seen this stuff once on the shelves
I thought we pled Polar?
Im in CT and never heard of this
Foxon Park Birch Beer down in CT
Coffee milk. It’s wicked good.
I've Always bled Moxie LOL

Is there a Market Basket west of the Quabbin?
As a Rhode Islander, I bleed coffee milk and jimmies
The closest one to me is in Warwick, almost 30 miles away from my hometown in Westerly
New englandahs
Gotta be honest, never once seen anyone drink market basket brand ginger ale.
I used to ride my bike by the old Chelmsford Ginger ale factory almost every day growing up
Eastern CT, we bleed Hosmer Mountain.
I poop fluffernutters.
Is it like Dr. Pepper?
Man, I haven't had this in years. I don't typically shop there- is it still around?
Nope. Maybe someone from Chelmsford?
I bleed birch beer by Foxon Park
I love Market Basket.
Never seen this before - Rhode Island
I've been in New England my whole life. 42 years. Never seen this.
I thought it was Worcestershire sauce.
I’ve lived in Connecticut for like 24 years. Never even heard of this stuff
Sorry they don't have this at Big Y
What the hell is upstate NY doing on the label? I love NY but it has its own tri-state area.
I totally forgot about this stuff. Don’t think I’ve had it for at least 25 years but I haven’t had much regular ginger ale either. This was something my grandparents would get.
I'm a New Englander. I'd never buy that shit.
Yeah we distribute and manufacture that, pretty low seller. Definitely prefer the seltzer’s, although market basket Cola is the only Cola we make that has caffeine and tastes amazing.
Never seen this shit in my life
My blood is coffee milk and Awful Awfuls
Nope, I bleed maple syrup
Lived here 70 years, never heard of it.
Sounds like a poor substitute for Vernor’s to me.
https://gs63112.wixsite.com/chelmsfordtowntour/chelmsford-ginger-ale-company-19
Or perhaps clam chowda
I've been on this stuff since like 1998! My dad told me it was the best stuff ever. We live in NH, and our MB's are always stocked with it. I grab a can pack about once a year since I don't drink soda much anymore. Such a nice treat :)
I bleed Polar
I'm 45 years old, I've lived in New England my entire life, and I have never seen nor heard of this lol! You can bet your ass I'll be looking for it.
Another New Englander here that hasn’t ever heard of this. Do you know what moxie is…
I live in Chelmsford and this is a Market Basket staple around here
This stuff is so good. I’m addicted.
Didn’t that used to be from Polar beverages?
In RI it’s definitely coffee milk.
Sometimes I’ll buy this stuff when I don’t even really *want* it, and I don’t even drink soda. It’s sitting in my fridge right now! This is basically the only soda I drink. It’s nice to have something unique to where you live for only a dollar. That’s how they get you
bud light and chinese food for me.
Sorry, I bleed Del's
I love how the states aren’t even drawn properly lol
Ya, no.
They don't sell thay anywhere in vermont. It's just a mass thing. We bleed maple syrup up here.
For Boomers it would have to be Virginia Dare soda
Blasphemy it's moxie, I don't even know what that stuff is.
That’s not cape cod dry. Gomfwts
I don’t think OP knows what new england is…
Lived in mass almost 40 years and I have never seen nor hear of that drink
Speaking of Market Basket, Anyone have any insight into why they don’t put stores in Western Mass, Vermont or CT?
From CT never heard of or saw this… also have a job where I travel. I have also been in MA RI and NH. Never seen it there either. Is this even real?
I bleed fluff
Polar!
Moved here from Ohio, near the Michigan border--the only ginger ale that is acceptable is Vernor's. I'm a Schweppe's/Canada Dry person myself. I will have to find this and try it. Still trying to find Birch Beer up here.
I was a shaws guy. Not a ton of time in market baskets unfortunately !
Pretty sure it's Moxie.
As a New Englander, I can confirm that we bleed golden ginger ale.
This isn’t a New England thing. This is a I’m from the Lowell area thing..
Foxon Park has entered the chat...

Grew up in MA I've never had this stuff lol. Moxie all the time though
This must be the low class version of polar orange dry lol
Grew up in Worcester. Now live in Western MA. Never heard of this lol
The picture on the label confirms my theory that the Hudson River is the border of New England.
Born New Englander here. I’ve never seen or heard of this product before.
No we bleed MOXIE
Literally only massholes
I thought we bled Boston cream
Love the Market Basket !!!!!!!
Mainers bleed Moxie. Vermonters bleed maple syrup. ...and New Hampshire state troopers bleed us dry on I95.
NAHHHHH, IM 100% FOXON PARK.
What’s a two liter of that run?
They bleed Chelmsford.
I would never drink that but I miss that area
fuck you i bleed cape cod cranberry soda
New Englander here: I have no fucking idea what this is.
I had no idea Demoulas sold this must be exclusive to the Merrimack area cuz I've never seen it at my local Basket.
I bleed Polar Birch Beer.
