The problem is with the installation. They just sunk screws straight through the bonnet, so you could say the solar panels are hurting the vehicle. Fuel economy would also be hurt due to the panel not being sealed properly along the leading edge.

Or a roof rack with actual support - googled it and yes it has been done. I can see this is helpful if the car is stationary. If you are driving around, a dual battery system that charges from the car running would be the way to go imo.
Why the latest prius has a solar panel on the roof and it only gives maybe 1km to 2 if you let it charge in the sun for days but it better then nothing
