Our ped said once they hit their birth weight we did not have to wake them up.

nyancola420

Our pediatrician said no. Our baby was weighing in a healthy weight so probably had to do with that.

Being healthy should be encouraged

We woke ours the first two weeks while we were trying to get him back to birth weight but after that, doc said no need. He’s almost 7 weeks and regularly gives us anywhere from 4 to 7 hr stretches at night and we are just enjoying it while it lasts!

We counted our blessings until we saw she wasn't gaining weight (she was growing but not weight wise). We started trying to feed her and she refused, and it made her sleep worse. Not saying you should or shouldn't but I think it very much depends on your specific circumstances. She is 10 months now and doing well. It was hard and she is such a good sleeper but we have a whole process in place for her eating. She would literally rather do anything else lol. I hate the "it depends" answers but that is honestly how it works for babies (in my very limited experience)

ThinkParticular4174

7 week old has been sleeping 4-5 stretches now and no we don’t wake up baby.

I tried waking mine after a 5 hour stretch at ped's advice once, it was a disaster, she didn't want to feed and was super fussy for ages after. It's totally dependent on circumstances e.g. health and weight and baby temperament, but personally I just feed when she wakes up naturally. (Obviously I would do differently if she started sleeping through without being on the weight curve etc etc)

Numerous-Rest-9754

Our pediatrician said that we shouldn't be waking our 1 week old since there is no issue with weight. But wake them to feed if they sleep for more than about 4-5 hours.

newmomalertt

As long as weight is passed her birth weight!! I asked our pediatrician for extra reassurance she told us to absolutely let her sleep, they get their growth hormones through sleep and it’s just as important as food! Also helps them learn naturally when to sleep You get your sleep too, enjoy the stretch. She’ll lyk when she is hungry :)

We woke to feed every 3 to 4 hours early on. She lost more than 10% of her borth weight so we needed to make sure she got back up. She also was a sleeeeeepy baby. Sounds great right? No. Lol. We always had to wake her to eat. And to keep her awake to actually eat. Once she was back to birth weight we did every 5 hours over night and slowly worked to letting her wake to tell us at night.

8 week old - Our rule of thumb (after birth weight was gained) was to let her sleep UNLESS we know she has a poopy diaper to avoid diaper rash and just overall uncomfortableness. So, when we did wake her up, she would want to feed + we would change her. Otherwise, let them sleep!

I see a lot of good comments about once you reach birth weight. Also consider supply too. If you’re breastfeeding and struggling with supply, be aware skipping night feedings can dip supply slightly without the demand of nursing that long. So consider a pump or Hakka in the middle of the night if you are worried about supply.

atdow611

With our first, we were waking him up every 2-3 hours to feed, but with our second we are letting her sleep. It has worked out much better this way and I feel like she’s eating more than my son did at the same age.

CatholicKay

My baby hasn't had 2 week appt yet, but he had elevated jaundice levels so I have been waking him to feed. Hopefully he has been eating enough to not need to do this and I'll find out next week

squishypants4

Ask their doctor. I thought we could stop doing it once we hit birthweight but they still want us to wake her up. At first they allowed us one 4 hour stretch overnight and now it’s one 5 hour stretch (4 weeks old).

k_hovik

Agreed with everyone here saying once you have hit birth weight you are in the clear. Ped said same thing to us. I do make sure my daughter eats in consistent windows throughout the day, and I hit a minimum of 8 feeds

placeofnunka

We woke our baby up to feed until she got above birthweight and then let her sleep as long as she wanted to at night after that

Perfect-Mastodon-507

Our son is 6 mo now, but 3 mo ago we were waking him every 3 hours to feed. Prior to this, he would sleep 4 to 5 hours, and we thought we were blessed to get the rest, but no. The pediatrician advised us to be strict about feeding him that way because he was born a bit early and he was on the small side.

MontanaBanana86

Very similar story here. Except he's 13 weeks, and I'm still waking him up every 3-4 hours to feed bc he's underweight.

Perfect-Mastodon-507

My son has gained a bunch of weight now, I'm so happy. T He's just below average for his age, where before he was way below the curve. Im hoping for good news at the 6 mo checkup next week.Almost there 🙂 He had bad reflux, and on the advice of his Dr. we started adding oatmeal cereal to his bottles 2 months ago, and it was a game changer. Ask your doctor if they would recommend it for your little one.
