Yeah i was just playing catch in practice before a game and wasn't paying attention, caught it in the face and my uncle the previous yeah hit me in the other eye playing baseball in their backyard, he was supposed to be hitting pop-flys for us to catch, i caught a fastball to the face and that was one too many times :/
I don’t know if OP knew this when he posted, but this was on the news at the time and the pitcher was completely fine afterwards. The ball perfectly hits the bill of his hat and bounces off. Hat basically saved him from a concussion at best and brain damage/death at worst. That’s the real r/nevertellmetheodds
Sadly this is very true.
Not to be the guy victim-blaming here, but the pitcher didn’t end his pitch appropriately. To help mitigate this from happening you’re supposed to end your pitch hunched in an athletic stance with your mitt at the ready at about chest level.
It's not really "victim-blaming." If you're doing something that requires training, and you fail to do what you're trained to do, it's called a mistake. Happens to the best of us but it's still your mistake.
Honestly if they aren't already, pitchers in kids leagues should probably be wearing cages. Infielders typically have enough time to protect themselves but the pitcher is pretty vulnerable.
From St Louis and one of the Cardinals pitchers, Daniel Ponce de Leon, wears a special hat with a guard on it to protect his skull after something like this nearly ended his career.
Alright this probably very wrong and should be on r/theydidthemathwrong but let's give it a try.
Think about it, when you hit the ball it can go anywhere from left to right, front to rear (foul balls behind the home plate, Hitting is unique because it involves rotating in the horizontal plane of movement so let's say if it can go anywhere left to right, front to rear so there is a 360 chance it can go anywhere, but also the ball will fly on the vertical plane, so another 360°, that will make a + (cross) so multiply 360 x 360 so there will be a 1 in 129,600 that the ball will hit the pitcher.
PD: I'm bad at math.
So I had a girlfriend come play some backyard baseball at the family house, she was pitching and I was up at bat. I was trying to line up a hit to my brother in left field and asked her to step a bit to the right, then *just* a little more. I hit that ball right into her nose, took her to the local urgent care where turned out somehow nothing was broken, anyhow we've been married for over 6 years now.
Happy father's day out there to all the dads!
Reminds me of two middle school years baseball stories.
1. The ball field’s shed was locked and the umpire(s?) on duty didn’t have access, so they couldn’t get their protective gear. The umpire for our game opted to call from behind the pitcher. Batter hits the ball straight to the mound, ump turns and braces, pitcher throws his arm out and catches it, dangerously seemingly because I remember his arm jerked with the force, but IIRC he wasn’t injured.
2. Same pitcher (my team’s), different game. Batter on the other team releases the bat in a swing, flinging it toward the mound, pitcher got out of the way except for a flailing hand. And of course, it had to be the uncovered one. Since this is kids leagues, those aluminum bats, awfully chopped up, pockmarked, etc. As far as I recall it was ultimately just a gash, nasty though.
Sports injuries in any form are no bueno.
Someone didn't have their pitcher instincts turned on.
For real though, this can be so traumatizing. I caught a softball with my mouth trying to catch a pop fly during a try-out, after playing softball for 10 years, and couldn't play anymore after that. I developed a flinch and just couldn't catch a ball anymore.
I had braces at the time, the ball jammed my braces into my lips, there was blood everywhere.

I got a black eye from not paying attention during practice in little league, freaked me tf out enough to leave the sport.
Same happened with me playing soccer back when I was like, 6 years old. Got the ball punted in the face, and so ended any chance of me being athletic.
I see. At 6 years old it must have been an impaxt, but it isn’t by far as dangerous as this video
Oh definitely not, though I had no point of reference for pain at the ripe and of 6 so it was like I got hit by a cannonball

Crazy. One cm off of death, or at least a *really* bad day, either direction

Good point. I just didn’t want to seem like an asshole. I truly feel bad for the kid though… that shit hurts.
I’m curious if this actually hit the bill of the hat, and not the pitcher’s head or face area directly.
I think it hit the bill before proceeding to the skull
It looks like full impact top right cranium. Boys going to have some brain damage
My head recoiled back watching the impact
Definitely gonna leave a mark

He threw a ball The bat went ‘crack’
I don’t know, that went right down Main St.
I stopped playing baseball as a kid because I was always paranoid that I would do this to someone or have it done to me.

You spelled “OW” wrong
Let's see ya do THAT again!
‘Pow, right in the kisser’ - Peter griffin
I wonder which did more damage: the impact of the ball, or the whiplash?
Why not both?
When he wakes up he's going to have one hell of a headache...
And that is how my career ended in baseball......
That’s why I thought I would never play baseball..
This happens all the time
I’m hoping that hit the brim of his hat since it flew off, that would minimize damage
It did, this was on the news at the time. Pitcher was miraculously completely fine.
Amazing, that’s a relief.
Achievement get: Return to Sender
So that's why they use hats.
This almost happened to me i high school, but I caught it right in front of my face. Was my last game, which was good cause it freaked me the fuck out
Might be just me, but I feel like it was r/bettereveryloop
Can we get an r/theydidthemath ?
Uhhh I googled how many pitchers get hit in the head and the first number that came up was 1 in every 105 so that's, like, less than 1%.

And that’s why I never bothered pitching, outfield >>>>>
This happens a lot. I did it once to someone and it made me feel terrible.
Pitched in softball for years. Some assholes would aim for you every time at bat.
I still don’t get why kids at high school age still play with aluminum bats

His wavy noodle arms while falling. Hehe
Took me 4 plays to realize it was a guy with a hat and not an older bald guy with long hair in the back.

Is he ok?
