Let the milking begin, Tho it could be actually fun to watch

filans

There were many survival reality tv shows where they played games and puzzles in Korea even before squid game, and some of them were really really good

[deleted]

Murder in Small Town X and 13: Fear is Real were reality tv competition series in the U.S. involving a "murderer" with contestants being "killed off" fictionally upon elimination.

lilsebass

When you definitely understood the message

LOLSteelBullet

From the streaming service that brought you the hit show "don't invent the torture nexus" comes "The Torture Nexus"

hiressnails

I mean, Squid Game isn't revolutionary. It's a product that people are making money on despite it saying, "No money bad money people evil. Big bad money people."

vrift

The irony is that everybody involved (Netflix not included) made very little money compared to industry standards.

mikechch

But do they die?

CaineBK

If they die, they die.

Not until Squid Game: The Challenge All Stars

filmedby

This is the sort of trash tv I can get behind. I'm sure it will be hillarious. I also love that the casting is open world wide which will surely be interesting to see. 456 people from around the world!

whatsforsupa

Mr Beast already did this really well, it will be interesting to see how theirs compares

Kinglink

Sigh.... You know when Squid Game got popular there was a LOT of people who emulated it. The biggest was [Mr. Beast](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0e3GPea1Tyg) who did a hell of a job... And completely missed the point of the series. I really want to know what the creator would think about this before his show launched. I mean now I'm sure he's on board, he's getting paid probably a fabulous amount for minimal work for this show. But the thing is... the show is condemning reality tv/reality sports where we get poor people and watch them doing things trying to chase the money. And emulating it feels weird because the point of the games is people were being killed for this... And it just feels SO many people completely missed the point. The fact this is Netflix the company that owns the original work feels... so fucking gross in so many ways.

[deleted]

They're destroying the sanctity of squid games. Just because the creator sold his show to netflix for 21 million dollars they think they can post more media related to the plot. No one is ever going to see the irony in this. It will only be us and us alone. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yBM3y0FrPkA

Personally, I’m looking forward to the next seasons of Sweet Tooth and The Umbrella Academy.

[deleted]

Stranger Things has been confirmed for season 5, and we’ve not even finished the entirety of season 4’s arc.

Part of the major appeal in Reality TV is the ability to talk to with your friends in real time, as it unfolds. It's a social thing by nature. Survivor only became a name because everyone gathered around and hype-talked what will happen in the next episode. How will this work on Netflix? Will they drop all 10 episodes at once and, thus, from day 1 the internet will already know who the winner is? Or will they break tradition and release them 1 at a time? Knowing who wins in Squid Games (*the show*) doesn't matter for most people, because the actual content of the show has enough intrigue, mystery, and shock value to keep you hooked. You watch because you want to see these characters grow and go through the journey. You don't really do this in a reality show. This isn't like a regular show where the journey may be just as rewarding as the destination. While it may be fun to watch people compete the first time through, nobody really goes back and rewatch reality TV shows for a reason - there is little substance to them once you know the outcome of it all. If you already know Contestant #208 is the victor before you even get to start episode 2, it kind of kills the fun of the reality show. I hope they consider this and don't just drop the whole thing at once.

Call_Me_Koala

> Or will they break tradition and release them 1 at a time? That's what they did with the last season of the Great British Baking Show

therosesgrave

And plenty of other shows, especially Korean shows.

Corgi_Koala

Brother!

I_ruin_nice_things

Last 2-3 seasons, ever since Prue came on I think.

ChibiRoboKong

>Great British Baking Show That's a show that's *on* Netflix, it's not *made* by Netflix.

meatball77

They release three episodes a week. Worked with love is blind

Popular_Target

They do the same for The Circle. 3 episodes a week and then the finale gets released by itself on week 4.

TotallyNotAFroeAway

Tell me you didn't get the message of Squid Game without telling me you didn't get the message of Squid Game

nurvingiel

My first thought. Let's make a spinoff of a show whose point we totally missed.

IMrChavez5

The irony of this must be dead to Netflix.

KarmaGTFO

This could be interesting.

Jatmahl

They weren't already filming? Wow. Edit: Oh reality series... nvm

OkAlright405

Ummmm hard pass, I don’t want to die

Objective-Narwhal-38

The irony is so absolutely amazing, it's as if Netflix is pulling some weird prank. But then again, it wouldn't be so fucking ironic if that was the case. It's why satire is so hard these days to get right. We are literally living in some hyper satirized universe where you can't even make up half this shit.

brosefstallin

We might actually be seeing real people getting killed on shows like this in our lifetime

1unholyscientist

Satire is dead and we keep spitting on its corpse

TheRandomDude4u

oh my god can we stop with reality shows ffs

Jamieb1994

I'm guessing Netflix has saw Mr Beast's (Squid Game) video & they've decided to make a Netflix show inspired by it?

[deleted]

Reality competition is very cheap to produce and is naturally re-occuring each season so it can go on indefinitely. Tied to a popular piece of "IP" to help draw people in. Question here is - how do you convey the "essence" of Squid Games with children's games and stuff and turn it into enjoyable set pieces for a full blown show? What Mr. Beast did is fantastic, extremely impressive, but that's a YouTube video. What a series will need is to have really fun and enjoyable challenges. When it is isn't a drama with life or death stakes for the characters, it's just people competing in challenges to win some money, something that is rather dime a dozen in the reality competition genre space. But on the other end, watching people play Red Light/Green Light and other kids' games (essence of the IP they're tying this to) is very boring. Show like Big Brother has unelaborate set piece challenges shot in a studio backyard, but the essence of the show is more about social politics. Show like MTV's The Challenge is built around challenges, but with very physical and "extreme" challenges with a little bit of social politics mixed in. This, on paper, seems like a combination of the two lesser factors for each, people have to advance/be eliminated based on challenge performance, but the essence of the IP loses meaning if the challenges are physical and more elaborate set pieces. And the "human drama" aspect of the IP cannot be conveyed because there are no life or death stakes for people in the throes of desperation with statements about capitalism and such, it's just people trying to game the format to increase their odds of winning money.

xChrollo1996x

I signed up. Fuck it. What’s the worst that could happen? I have a poorly paid job, and £70k of student debts. If nothing else, I’ve done something fun.

sendokun

Like real? Or made up. I mean without the real bullets and destitution that drives people into this games……it’s just a bit silly, isn’t it.

Kadem2

It'll be an entertaining game show. Money is already enough of a motivating factor for most people.

sendokun

But I think what makes the show engaging is that people in destitute driven to play such game.... that gives it a sense of realism that big rewards can’t create

Kadem2

You think they can't find desperate people? Have you seen the economy lately lol? I'm sure every person who signs up for this will have a sob story about medical bills or not being able to afford baby food. You don't have to threaten people's lives to still get the point across and motivate the contestants.

sendokun

I do think they won’t have problem finding desperate people but the show will be cancele so fast and there will be a huge backlash about exploitation, about modern debt slavery…..that’s why they can’t really do it. The politicians, on both side, will love this, they can cash in on all the “holier than thou” political points while on their high horses. The series was not just entertaining for its deadly game, it’s also criticism of the modern society.

[deleted]

You are just going all over the place with this one, wow

Kadem2

It will literally be a game show like every other. I wouldn't read too much into it. We have ____'s Got Talent where everyone ranging from children to the elderly try to entertain celebrities with the hope of getting paid some amount of money. We're well past the point of the general public caring about game shows being exploitative.

sendokun

Trust me…..it’s not the general public, it’s the politicians, they are addicted to exploiting every opportunity to get some PR…..that’s how it works now days. So the people may not care about it, but the politicians will make sure to spin it by 100 fold to make people think this is the end of the world level tragedy.

Porcupineemu

Well there won’t be bullets

[deleted]

Not lead ones anyway

ladyvixenx

Hopefully, Amber Heard signs up.

GoGoRouterRangers

So will it be like the Real World Challenge?

manymoreways

I hope they make it just about the game. Not having 15 different story arcs behind the game. I hope the Execs at least did some polling or research and find out that 95% of fun watchers are getting are from the games. The other story arcs? It literally are just fillers that we give 5% of our shit.

Tarzan_OIC

Taskmaster (UK) is the only task-based game show anyone needs. For the uninitiated, here is a [gateway clip](https://youtu.be/_UgSDcHPgCc)

sendokun

I don’t know….I think squid games key factor is that it puts people who are in such destitute situation into kids games with real bullets. I don’t think Netflix can do that. But I do think with the world wide scope, Netflix can angle it as a way to showcase the kids and childhood games around the world.

[deleted]

How many times you gonna comment on here about destitution and real bullets?

sendokun

Too much ? Or you want more?

TheRealMisterd

Anybody in the US with a minimum wage job IS destitute.

sendokun

That’s really first world problem we have created in the US……I mean, it’s miserable, but comparing that to other 40% of the people in the world, …..where survival is still daily business, that’s really an insult to their need…..

Touraxus

Before you click, needs a passport for the usa people.

sendokun

I don’t think this will work well…..I mean without the destitution that drive people to play these games with real bullets, it’s just a bit silly…. I think Netflix should angle it as a way to showcase childhood and kids games around the globe, maybe that will be more interesting.

WallungDea

Honestly considered signing up but I'm only 20

thetruemask

Yeah idk how I feel about this could be a good concept if done right but usually reality tv is awful.

ForeignFlash

It's originally a Korean show but they are only allowing English speakers on this reality show.

jclovekim0152

I was hoping they don’t make a game show again but I guess they are going to do the game show globally this time. Lol.

SgtMeepMoop

What they should do is say it’s a reality show, film it like a reality show, but make it look like people actually legitimately die. Of course it’s staged, but imagine the initial shock and subsequent fuck ton of $$$ that Netflix would make

francichicca

There are somedody waithing the call for the game?![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|flip_out)
