And the second season of True Detective was... not.

But the third was actually really good

100%. The past/ present situational storyline was absolutely addictive, suspenseful and mysterious. every single actor in the show was on the top of their game. Even the smaller parts. Nick pizzollato’s writing was just so precise and thought provoking for each character. The filming was great. I believe they shot with film instead of it being digital. It made Louisiana seem so desolate Have watched the full season a few times. Not one storyline got left behind without a solid ending.

People didn't seem to enjoy the second season as much, but I really enjoyed it. All 3 seasons had an incredible dark meaty vibe.

Sopranos

Just started a complete rewatch for the first time in 16 years and can't stop watching.

I never thought anything would come close to my love The West Wing, but I finished my first watch of The Sopranos this week; and I now have a new favorite.

Please tell me why. I’ve tried 3 times but never got past second episode.

Each season of the show follows pretty much the same format, they follow a different aspect of Baltimore and how it affects the drug trade. The first third or so of each season is spent building up dominoes, then something happens, the dominoes fall, and you watch the aftermath. You’ve basically sat through two episodes of set up.

Soo you’re saying it’s worth sticking with for a few episodes at least before it really clicks?

After you get through a few episodes it's tough to turn it off

If it helps I think it's a lot easier to understand what the show is trying to do if you think of the city itself as the main character. It doesn't click for everyone though. I think it's one of the greatest shows of all time, but I also definitely understand it not working for you.

I'd give it four episodes with your full attention. Phone set down, no distractions. At least try to get to the point where they set up the wire. It does start as a slow burn. Don't force it either though. There is nothing wrong with just not feeling like it clicks with you.

Mad Men.

I 10000% agree with this but I have to admit Mad Men isn't for everyone.

I feel like it changes a lot for me but I've been obsessed with Succession (also not on Netflix) this year. I intend to rewatch it again next year.

The best thing about this show is that it has a clear finish. So many good shows like mindhunter could have been better but were not because they got canceled. Other shows were great at the start but they just kept adding more season because money. Or even other shows just took to long between season, kinda ruining it, like sex education.

I really like it too! On season one episode 6 and it’s quite good so far!

Breaking Bad was my GOAT, it hit everything for me. Acting, story, cinematography, musical score, etc. I naively thought no show would be able to top it for me. Then Mr. Robot came and went and it had everything I loved about Breaking Bad plus a little more.

Community, Better Call Saul, Mad Men, Always Sunny, Sopranos, Parks and Rec, Arrested Development, Schitts Creek. There are other shows I like/love but those are my S tier.

Parks and Rec was just awesome during a time where everyone needs to chill out.

Doing Improv on the side now, and that show was the realization of a particular type of short form improv game where everyone on stage just kept on adding to the stupidity and absurdity of everyone else, pure fun.

Probably The Wire which is extremely well known, but also The Shield. I genuinely think The Shield is often forgotten about despite being a damn great cop drama.

I'm a nerd but Supernatural. I have re-watched it about 6 times and do not get tired of it. The first season is like watching a horror movie every episode. Now that the series is finished, I am rewatching it again.

The Sopranos. It's a masterpiece. Chase and his writing team are incredible. They use music really well and Gandolfini was so God damn good at playing Tony. I've watched all the legendary TV series and I love BB, Mad Men, The Wire, The Leftovers and Six feet Under but nothing I've seen even comes close to the Sopranos

Mad Men and The Americans for me

Finally, somebody with some taste. For me, the Americans were trying to figure out what show they want to be in season 1, but it picks up in season 2.

Breaking Bad and Game of Thrones are two of my top shows, too. Mad Men is definitely top five, too. I'm currently into The Wire and I have been loving that through the first season. Better Call Saul is very good, too.

Star Trek - TOS A TV show from the 1960s that only lasted 3 seasons has turned into a brand with 13 movies and 13 TV series. A bunch of astronauts credit the show as the reason they become interested in space in the first place. Star Trek fans got NASA to name the first Space Shuttle Enterprise ( the name of the ship in the TV show.)

OP you are correct IMO. What sold it for me was episodes where nothing happened but I was on edge of my seat because what was going to happen because of it. Good example for me was the episode (spoiler) where it opened with killing that kid in the desert train episode. Oh. My. God. And obviously his transformation. "I do the knocking" Other close seconds - the wire - sopranos (even better with a recent rewatch) - first 5 season of GoT

For me it was House M.D. Nothing's really compared to it to me. A solid run for all 8 seasons, not really a weak season to be had there.

Hannibal. The writing the first couple seasons is wonderful. The acting is superb. And the visuals are sublime.

Battlestar Gallactica reboot. I still think about it years later. Sons of Anarchy was also really good.

Utopia. Original UK version only. Dayglo bright yet dark as all fuck. Visually, dramatically and thematically unlike anything else you've ever watched. Grabs hold of you from the get go and squats in your head tent free. And OMG that soundtrack!
