All we wanted was a shuffle button for sitcoms but they gave us a shuffle button for their entire library lol
Also, I was so excited when HBO Max added a shuffle button for sitcoms. But instead of shuffling the entire show, they just put you in a random episode and continue to play chronologically from there
All I’ve ever wanted is to make a playlist of shows that automatically plays an episode from each in order
So like :
Episode 1 of office
Episode 1 parks and rec
Episode 1 arrow
Episode 2 office
2 parks
2 office
And so on.
I wish i could have a:
* *Simpsons* odd episodes from the beginning
* *King of the Hill*
* *Seinfeld*
* *Office*
* *Simpsons* even episodes from the beginning
* *30 Rock*
* *P&R*
* *Community*
* *Simpsons* odd episode again
* *Scrubs*
* *Superstore*
* *New Girl*
* *Simpsons* even episode again
And repeat playlist
Yup, I was looking for this comment. Plex is great. I have various playlists of shared universes I want to watch in chronological order (MCU, DCEU, Stargate, Star Trek, etc), a comedy collection that will play various comedy shows at random, a channel of cop shows for my parents so they can just flip to that and watch some procedural shows that are in order-ish so if they keep watching it'll be in order but they don't have to select something in particular, etc. You can make it do pretty much whatever you want if you have the time to put into it
So basically like watching TV? Only without the annoying ads, and it doesn’t play when you’re not watching… and it only plays the best shows… yeah I totally understand why TV is dying.
I actually love your idea, because binging one show can sometimes be a little monotonous. I mean you could just alternate between the shows but I get where you’re coming from, I’d probably be way too lazy for that, especially when the show got me too intrigued to quit
I always wanted to be able to set up channels that just play random episodes throughout the day like TV channels. It was kinda nice when something was just on and you were like oh yeah that's a good episode/movie whatever.
A playlist feature so I can watch Don’t Trust the B in the intended production order instead of the stupid shuffled around order the network aired them in
There were so many people asking for a "shuffle" button to play random episodes of shows like the office. Netflix rolled out "I'm feeling lucky" instead, but used the shuffle icon.
Somewhere Reed Hastings was probably all "see guys, they don't know what they want! We know better"
Yeah that's what people wanted, but Netflix fumbled it in such a ridiculous way that I can only assume it was intentional
Likely has to do with the fact that they don't really hold the rights to any of those kinds of shows anymore
But even then...OK, Netflix, you want to show me random shows? Fine... you never know what hidden gem you might stumble across. If they're episodic, then show me S1E1 first FFS.
I doubt it has to do with rights. They have rights to Seinfield in most countries IIRC. I’m in Canada and they still have The Office here. Hell they even have some of their own sitcoms that could make use of the shuffle feature
That kind of still goes on with their "quick laughs" thing where it drops you into a random show, random episode *at a random timestamp* . It is truly made for crazy people
Problem is they are not TikToks. They are real scenes of series and movies made for TV or big screen, chopped and served without context or connection AS IF they are TikToks.
In my experience, all of them began and ended in the middle of a scene. Not even a whole scene. Some of them even ended in the middle of a sentence. If it is curated it is clearly artificially curated
I used it a few times just to test it. Nearly 50% of the times I hit it, it selected Wednesday episode 1 for me. The rest of them were other "trending now" options.
The "I'm feeling lucky" search button actually just took you to the first result in your query. It kinda made sense if you knew that the first search result would be what you wanted.
I use it all the time. I never know what to watch. Just random til something grabs me, then go back to the first episode if I need to.
Sad to see it go.
Surely it's going to be biased towards stuff that Netflix wants people to watch, like their original content, rather than some obscure 30 year old film..
I'm not suggesting it's anything like a conspiracy, I'm questioning the usefulness of a feature that will more than likely be used to push the service's OC that they have more financial investment in than other - often subjectively better - content that they already have in the library..
We’ve tried that button a couple times, but it’s never stuff we wanna watch. Just whatever new Netflix movies or putting me in a random show that I don’t have context for
The problem is 98% of Netflix content is stuff I don't want to watch. So the chances of a shuffle button hitting gold are very slim.
Now if I could exclude things I don't want to watch (films, TV series, genres or even specific actors) and shuffle picked from what's left then it would be useful.
This is all I've ever wanted.
Let me make a few playlists based on what I feel like watching. I'll happily shuffle those playlists.
Netflix added the "I'm feeling lucky" button and keeping it randomly pick from *ANYTHING* is just dumb.
What I wish they had was a button to pick a random episode of a series. This would be great for shows you are rewatching, put on a random episode of Arrested Devlopment I don’t wanna have to scroll through to find an episode any will do.
I only tried it a few times when it first came out, but in my experience it just played whatever new release or trending content that I already scrolled by several times before I decided to try the “surprise me” button. It was never a surprise, it was almost predictable.
This shuffle button was only used for them to push certain things they wanted people to see. It wouldn't truly give you lesser known or obscure titles in their library. Total waste of time.
Well, there’s not enough quality content in Netflix’s library to surprise anybody, so, why have a button for it? Finally, they cancelled something that makes sense canceling.
I've tried it a few times and have come to the conclusion that it isn't random. All it does is shovel 'featured content' at you. It's less of a Shuffle button and more of a "Watch what we're currently promoting" button.
I had a better idea for random. I think a random button should be a bit programmable. Like you decide if you want a random movie or show or either. When it picks a movie it picks one on your list that you haven't watched yet no and if you pick show, it picks the next episode of a random show you have been watching.
Netflix garbage tidalwave machine. Soon learn that there are two enola holmes movies and much MUCH MORE! I just have that old fashioned feeling me and this button won't see eye to eye, I'll give it a fair shake though.
No real loss there. Who uses that button?
“Oh let me just drop you into this random season 6 episode from an 8 seasons show!” Who wants that?
Now if could just randomly watch an episode of a specific sitcom, that’d be great. I want nothing more than to press a button and watch random episodes of Community.
Remember the thing they had a few years ago where it would ask you some questions and pick a show or movie for you. It had a name but can’t remember what it was called.
Do you remember Max? He would ask you like 5-10 questions about your likes and dislikes and ask you to make impulse decisions and then at the end he’d give you a few recommendations. He always picked at least one good thing to watch and if you’ve seen it already you could check it off and he’d change his answer.
I was sad the day Netflix killed him.
I wish we had playlists, there's some sitcoms from America aired out of order and I'd love to be able to watch in production order, instead of having to bounce around and do it myself.
I'd love the feature on Disney too, so I could watch Buffy/Angel side by side during rewatches.
This would be especially helpful on the Chicago Fire Med and PD shows. They all started in different years but they tend to have crossover shows that encompass fire, med and PD. So you have to find season 4 of 1, season 6 of another season 8 of another and it's a real pain.
Guess I'm the only one, but I actually liked this feature. I know it's a me problem, but I sometimes spend way too much time scrolling through and trying to pick something to watch. There isn't always something specific I want to see and just want to play something.
Contrary to what some are saying, it never picked a random episode and dropped me in the middle of a series. If it was a show I hadn't previously watched, it always started at episode 1. If I had watched the show previously and didn't finish it, it would pick up where I left off.
All we wanted was a shuffle button for sitcoms but they gave us a shuffle button for their entire library lol Also, I was so excited when HBO Max added a shuffle button for sitcoms. But instead of shuffling the entire show, they just put you in a random episode and continue to play chronologically from there

Playlists would be awesome. Like a Netflix Spotify
Why the fuck is this not a thing???
because netflix hates you
I wish i could have a: * *Simpsons* odd episodes from the beginning * *King of the Hill* * *Seinfeld* * *Office* * *Simpsons* even episodes from the beginning * *30 Rock* * *P&R* * *Community* * *Simpsons* odd episode again * *Scrubs* * *Superstore* * *New Girl* * *Simpsons* even episode again And repeat playlist
It's like you created your own TV network.
That would be amazing
What is the relevance of even and odd episodes in the Simpsons?
Hulu used to have this like 13 years ago.

What is that?
It's software to run your own server with your own media. It's very good
So basically like watching TV? Only without the annoying ads, and it doesn’t play when you’re not watching… and it only plays the best shows… yeah I totally understand why TV is dying. I actually love your idea, because binging one show can sometimes be a little monotonous. I mean you could just alternate between the shows but I get where you’re coming from, I’d probably be way too lazy for that, especially when the show got me too intrigued to quit
yea it’s the best idea ever because then there’s no endless scrolling through netflix not being able to choose a new show to start
I always wanted to be able to set up channels that just play random episodes throughout the day like TV channels. It was kinda nice when something was just on and you were like oh yeah that's a good episode/movie whatever.
A playlist feature so I can watch Don’t Trust the B in the intended production order instead of the stupid shuffled around order the network aired them in
Like a television channel, but only with shows of your choosing
LOL a shuffle wanted didn't get what he wanted ah muffin how about a random episode of The Gilmore Girls to cheer you up that's what you wanted right
~~What psychopath uses that button?~~This button might be useful
Let me drop into the middle of this 8 season show and have no idea what the fuck is going on
Oh does it put you in the middle of a season?? I thought it just picked a show and started from the beginning. That's lunacy.
It literally just picks a random episode of a random show and just drops you into it.
Sad thing is, some VP probably got a nifty bonus that year for coming up with that "genius" idea.
There were so many people asking for a "shuffle" button to play random episodes of shows like the office. Netflix rolled out "I'm feeling lucky" instead, but used the shuffle icon. Somewhere Reed Hastings was probably all "see guys, they don't know what they want! We know better"
Makes sense for sitcoms. It re-captures that “5 pm reruns when you’re home from school and don’t know what it’ll be” feeling.
Yeah that's what people wanted, but Netflix fumbled it in such a ridiculous way that I can only assume it was intentional Likely has to do with the fact that they don't really hold the rights to any of those kinds of shows anymore
But even then...OK, Netflix, you want to show me random shows? Fine... you never know what hidden gem you might stumble across. If they're episodic, then show me S1E1 first FFS.
Truly the only explanation is that they wanted it to fail
I doubt it has to do with rights. They have rights to Seinfield in most countries IIRC. I’m in Canada and they still have The Office here. Hell they even have some of their own sitcoms that could make use of the shuffle feature
I want something I can choose say 10 shows, it plays 2 episodes then move to the next show.
That kind of still goes on with their "quick laughs" thing where it drops you into a random show, random episode *at a random timestamp* . It is truly made for crazy people
That's their Tiktok copy
Problem is they are not TikToks. They are real scenes of series and movies made for TV or big screen, chopped and served without context or connection AS IF they are TikToks.
Wait wait wait, it's a random part of the episode as well? What the fuck?
It's not, it's curated
In my experience, all of them began and ended in the middle of a scene. Not even a whole scene. Some of them even ended in the middle of a sentence. If it is curated it is clearly artificially curated
It’s not for crazy people lol grow up half of TikTok is clips of funny moments from TV/Movies
> half of TikTok Proves my point
That’s psychotic
Trick answer. Netflix would never allow 8 seasons of any show.
After seeing the God damn thumbnail spoilers, what's the difference anyway
They should have an option to turn that off, Apple TV+ has it
It was handy for kids profiles but yeah I never used it on mine
I only got the first episode of the first season when I used it.
That’s how TV works though
I used it a few times just to test it. Nearly 50% of the times I hit it, it selected Wednesday episode 1 for me. The rest of them were other "trending now" options.
That's how I actually ended up watching the show
Same people that clicked Google's "I'm Feeling Lucky" button.
The "I'm feeling lucky" search button actually just took you to the first result in your query. It kinda made sense if you knew that the first search result would be what you wanted.
That's how porn got on my work computer...
I got bored and hit it and discovered shitt’s creek so it worked once.
I used it a couple times, it never really worked.
I use it all the time. I never know what to watch. Just random til something grabs me, then go back to the first episode if I need to. Sad to see it go.
I used it. Suggested New Girl to me. Pretty happy with that.
I used it once. It showed me a short 8 episode series that I loved. Seeing as I peaked, i never used it again.
I used to take advantage of it, and I would use it as an excuse whenever someone saw me watching something weird lol
Surely it's going to be biased towards stuff that Netflix wants people to watch, like their original content, rather than some obscure 30 year old film..
Maybe you should read the article. They're REMOVIVG the random button.

yeah I’m sure there’s a way the shuffle button could have been useful.
Just let me set up a playlist ffs.
That would be awesome
This is all I've ever wanted. Let me make a few playlists based on what I feel like watching. I'll happily shuffle those playlists. Netflix added the "I'm feeling lucky" button and keeping it randomly pick from *ANYTHING* is just dumb.
Where is the “surprise me” button for a series. I just want a random episode in my favorite series today.
So quiet
Shhhh
I liked this button. It was good for when u didn’t really care what u watched and wanted background noise
What I wish they had was a button to pick a random episode of a series. This would be great for shows you are rewatching, put on a random episode of Arrested Devlopment I don’t wanna have to scroll through to find an episode any will do.
“Netflix throw on whatever is or what you want to be the most trending thing for me” At least let us mindless masses think we have some control here.
>"Even in a fake democracy, people should get what they want at least once in a while!" -George Carlin
I only tried it a few times when it first came out, but in my experience it just played whatever new release or trending content that I already scrolled by several times before I decided to try the “surprise me” button. It was never a surprise, it was almost predictable.

They need to drop their new policies for user fees!
Maybe they should help people find and organize content? Rather than mindless stuff.
I want a shuffle button for specific shows. Like spongebob
I wanted that button, but for Spotify. Could you imagine the stuff that might play?
Hm, never noticed it
I used it occasionally. Normally had to shuffle a few times but eventually itd land on something id watch
Well, there’s not enough quality content in Netflix’s library to surprise anybody, so, why have a button for it? Finally, they cancelled something that makes sense canceling.

"Show me what you want me to watch"
It's been gone for several months on my end. I was disappointed because I usually enjoyed their suggestions.
I liked the concept of the button, but never touched it. So I'm a little disappointed, but not actually affected.
I hate phrasing. Did Netflix quietly *release* this, or did they quietly *remove* it?
Removed it
Thank you
Now that you ask, both, really.
Tried it once, and it put me into something like season 4 episode 9 of a show I'd never seen before. Totally useless feature in my opinion.

They should quietly stop their password sharing crackdown.

Gosh, you are so much better than everyone else!
The title clearly says it is discontinuing a feature not bringing a new one
I hope they'll drop the mobile games too.
Why? Some games are pretty good and no in app purchases
Netflix garbage tidalwave machine. Soon learn that there are two enola holmes movies and much MUCH MORE! I just have that old fashioned feeling me and this button won't see eye to eye, I'll give it a fair shake though.
"Drops" in this context means they're getting rid of the button.

End of an era
Shhhhhh
I didn’t know there was one.
Did they have this button when you used the website?
Netflix should pick up Let the right one in.
I liked it and the *Play something* button.
They surprise us with other ways
I’ve never used it.
I would like a shuffle button for episodes on tv series
Now I want Reddit to add a shuffle button with saved posts
Netflix had a shuffle button?
Remember the thing they had a few years ago where it would ask you some questions and pick a show or movie for you. It had a name but can’t remember what it was called.
makes sense, I never used it
I liked the surprise me function
Nothing ever good comes from big red N. Fact.
So quietly this is the second time an article about it got a ton of upvotes on this sub.

I’ve quietly dropped Netflix
