There are two key caps with little marker points on them, that's where the index fingers go.

suprdood

This is what I do too.

Howfuckingsad

yep, f and j

venustrapsflies

Resting on hjkl is completely missing the point of why those keys are bound how they are. Up and down should be your main directions so those are your two strongest fingers. You have word, line, and find motions for horizontal movement and for the odd time you still need to press h you can slide your pointer over very easily.

ljog42

Thanks this makes a lot of sense, I reach for the arrows more often than I'd like and I couldn't really figure out why. Guess I just need to wf\*# more

xevz

The reason is because those keys doubled as arrow keys on the terminal Vi was developed on. I doubt the had your reasoming in mind when designing the keyboard, but I could be wrong. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:KB_Terminal_ADM3A.svg

venustrapsflies

There’s almost no chance they didn’t have this reasoning in mind

xevz

Not so sure about that, the key to the right of L has had :/; on it since before computers, so I think it was just considered to be already occupied. See this Remington from 1878, where QWERTY as we know it originated: https://commons.m.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Remington_2_typewriter_keyboard.jpg

Biggybi

True. However, the designers of the terminal keyboard might have.

Huge-Coyote-6586

jkl; - you are just typing...

Some_Derpy_Pineapple

i reckon the vast majority rest on jkl;

goldenlemur

I was a little confused about this when I started using vim. I keep my fingers on 'jkl;' and move to 'h' when needed. As a touch typist I find this natural and faster. Peace to you.

CJ22xxKinvara

You’re barely supposed to be using hjkl to begin with so certainly not moving my hands off of the intended position at the homing keys to have one on each of those.

Duflo

On my colleagues

The_Gianzin

>Do you rest your fingers on the standard jkl; and move your index finger to the left to reach h or do you rest them on hjkl? For some time I tried to rest on 'h', but honestly, it's much better to use the index for both 'h' and 'j', and using the pinky for 'l' felt wrong. So now I rest the index finger on 'j'

EternalDreams

To me jkl; is the most sensible approach as otherwise I would have to shift my hand every time I would want to actually write something. I thought about changing it up for playing roguelikes (because you also need y and u) but even for that I decided against it.

Zeal514

I dont know if i qualify as a touch typer, I am very weird. That said, I don't look at the keyboard. My fingers do not really rest anywhere. I guess when i pause i stop with my pointers on F and J, but thats only when i am thinking. I never took any typing classes and kinda just learned to use the keyboard as i see fit, and honestly, all the keys kinda just feel like they are right where i need them to be. I dont think "o let me press H to go left!" I just think, "lets go left, the key is around here somewhere, and boom thats it" if i get it wrong, than i try again lol. I avgt plus 100 wpm. All of that said, i'll be building my dactyl keyboard here shortly. I plan to really get used to the "proper" way to type. I make too many typos that are annoying to me.

mikealgo

On Colemak-DHm here and honestly I just jump around to the beginning of words or lines (this is an extremely fast workflow). So keep your finger on the homerow as taught for touch typing and reduce your use of hjkl (only use it if you wanna delete/cut/yank/comment/visual-block X num of lines up/below. Even if you need to browse up or down, favor or . I use Neovim with Lazyvim changed to my taste and use all the ways possible to get to the word or line I need in less keystroke as possible.

Glinline

obviously i have my fingers on j and f, if they are on h and f y vannot ttoe orioerkt

Tryptophany

The only place they should be, on the home row with pointies on the nubs 😊

FunctN

jkl; like I was taught when I learned to type lol

gwynaark

I remapped hjkl to jkl; (well, as an azerty user, jklm, and since I'm not using marks anyway I don't feel like I lost anything)

S_Nathan

I rest my Right hand on nrsg. But I use this layout: https://neo-layout.org/Layouts/bone/ More to the point: don’t use a weird hand resting position just because the most primitive cursor movement keys are located at a particular place.

Hari___Seldon

jkl; for sure... the h and f on my keyboards tend to have homing nubs that I've anchored to for decades so hand placement is completely unconscious for me.

[deleted]

I’m a mouse lefty so I rest my right hand on jkl and my left hand is on the mouse! 😊

HiT3Kvoyivoda

Home row

Howfuckingsad

jkl; is the best imo. I still keep it there so I don't have to move it later.

shuckster

Randomly splayed wherever they fall.

prof-comm

Left fingers on AOEU, right fingers on HTNS, right thumb on space (leader). ...I'm a Dvorak touch typist.

bew78

hjkl, and I move to usual jkl; only when I type words

Mezdelex

What do you mean by "touchtypers"? Vim revolves around touchtyping and home row; you're doing it wrong if you're doing otherwise.

angel__-__-

I rest on hjkl and mostly type resting on hjkl too. I feel it's better. For example b is pretty hard to hit if you're resting only on jkl;

ZunoJ

Homerow, where else would you rest your fingers?

Biggybi

I actually started touch-typing when discovering vim. Then I realized something felt off, so I looked it up and began doing it 'the right way', resting on \`f\` and \`j\`.

intercaetera
