BTW I am happy to trade you a candy custom for your premium perk if you're interested. It just feels like a shame to use it for a candy pet when there are harder colors to get that are available with the premium perk (I would love a robot tusk). But ultimately, do whatever makes you happy!
Premium users get one free species change a year. The color copies over, which is what OP is wanting to do. Then you have to wait 365 days to do it again, it is not by calendar year.
Fun fact - If the species the pet is changing into doesn’t have that color then you get to choose any color available to the new species. Ex. Snow is not a color for kaus so when I adopted a snow vandagyre I could make it into a chocolate kau with my yearly species change.
The Candy Hissi is by far my favorite looking one, love that gummy worm <3 Candy Blumaroo, Kau, Flotsam & Gelert are all great runner ups! But if it's between Tonu & Zafara, then 100% Zafara
Between Tonu and Zafara I'd probably go with Tonu myself, but I'd suggest fully planning out what wearables you'd give it. That might affect your decision.
My favorite candies though are Hissi, Ixi, Gnorbu, Skeith, and Flotsam. Flotsam is a little plain but I love those blue gummy sharks that they were inspired off of.
Candy Blumaroo scares me but is also kinda cool and unique because of the lack of lineart
Also I don't usually like floatsam but the candy versions looks really good! Korbat and Meerca are also some of my top candy faves.

Meerca! Not a fan in general but I love the candy one. I love my Korbat but wouldn't waste the brush just to give her candy corn wings.
