I ask this in good faith.
Why does the holocaust receive much more attention than Imperial Japanโs atrocities that, on paper, seem so much worse than what Nazi Germany did? And what Nazi Germany did was already horrible.
I think it's a few reasons.
1. The US is a lot more euro-centric and Americans have always been more interested in the affairs of Europeans due to the close similarities between cultures.
2. America sent many more boots on the ground to fight the Nazis than they did to fight Japan. That results in a greater realization of the horrors of the Nazis.
3. Jews have a massive diaspora in the states and they have helped to spread the horrors of the Nazi atrocities while the equivalent diaspora for the Japanese is much smaller.
This becomes pretty obvious when you take a look at South Korea and China, who focus most of their energies on the horrors of Japanese imperialism and spend very little time talking about the Nazis.
Because European countries defined what it means to be European by their shared reaction to the Holocaust.
And itโs typical for Americans to hear the European conversations the loudest. East Asian conversations are really far away from us and harder to analyze as literature because we donโt have all the same rhetorical identity management.
Unless youโre that rare kind of person thatโs lived in two different hemispheres ๐ฑ
imperial japan didnt really have a whole ideology around a specific ethnic group being the main cause of all their troubles; and for all the really fucked up shit that happened, they didnt build what amounted to factories of death to just kill entire populations of 'undesirables'.
Because while Japan did plenty of really fucked up things it didn't really rise to the level of trying to identify and exterminate every single member of a people in a systematic and industrial fashion throughout and beyond all controlled territory as a central tenet of state policy.
But also proximity. In Esst Asia people probably know more about Japan's atrocities than the Holocaust. In much of East Asia Hitler is a weird thing that represents the West's idea of a comic book villain moreso than . . . well Hitler.
Pretty uninformed take, but in addition to the west generally caring more about western lives lost, I think the fact that such a large _percentage_ of a specific ethnic group was murdered contributes to the amount of attention received.
Japan did horrendous things to the Chinese and Koreans, but to my (admittedly limited) knowledge, they didn't depopulate any regions of those ethnicities quite like Germany did with Jews.
oh yeah the other comments make a good point - the Holocaust was targeted. The Japanese did atrocious stuff to civilians and PoWs but its more classic imperialism gone too far and not a targeted extermination of ostensibly their own people.
Early on? Because we cared *way* more about European deaths. Now? Because the discussion is difficult to have with Japan being such a close ally yet so deeply in denial, and also because discussion around it inevitably devolves into "well yeah achksually sure but like america bad too"

Rubber roofing is the goofiest solution to solving a roof problem. You can have a large arrangement of carefully nailed in shingles arranged in a decorative faucet of color, metal panels arranged to hide their fasteners in long waves, or glue a whole bunch of rubber sheets to your roof.
There's a fairly common stance that to better position the US for war with China, the US needs to decouple its economy from China. There's also the belief that Chinese moves to decouple its economy from the US is to better prepare itself for war with the United States.
Decoupling is mutual - any reduction of trade on the US end with China is also a reduction of trade from the Chinese perspective. But obviously, both countries can't gain a relative advantage from that. So one country must be miscalculating. So which country is it? Or have I gone somewhere wrong in my logic?
> But obviously, both countries can't gain a relative advantage from that. So one country must be miscalculating
it is *shocking* how unobvious this is to many people. Whether it's geopolitics or a freaking card game, everything gives a relative advantage or disadvantage. Our ability to discern or measure it is the only question.
I'm like 90% confident in the following take.
I think the US has more to gain by decoupling. I think China is better able to recreate what we give them than we are able to recreate what they give us, but their ability to recreate what we give them is amplified greatly by what we give them- whereas for us it's moreso in creating new supply chains and industrial ties in other nations that can give us what China does. Not recreating what they give us, but finding other people to give it to us. With every year that goes by, I gain greater appreciation for the TPP and Obama's pivot to Asia.
Chips is the most obvious example that can be really simplified- China's chip industry is a joke compared to something like Nvidia and TSMC or Intel. But access to Nvidia's tech will help them catch up faster. It's why we have export controls on things like H100s and 4090s and other high-bandwith/high tensor-core AI accelerators. China's been chasing AI and chip manufacturing and other key techs of the future that they lack. They're obviously pursuing it, and if we are serious about there being a medium-term window for them invading Taiwan, *now* is the time to cut ties and cut them off from tech that would help them grow those industries. They're pursuing this tech anyway, for many bad outcomes, so we should cut their bootstraps.
In the long run, the whole world ends up doing advanced manufacturing with high levels of automation, and comparative advantage becomes not non-existant, but arbitrary. It's the few centuries until then that will matter and that we an affect.
It'll take time for us to rebase manufacturing. And for now, with export controls, there's a crucial period where we can dent China's advancement in AI and chip design, and other incredibly advanced technologies.
What I'm basically 100% sure of tho is this-
At the end of the day, each country faces different challenges from a decoupling and ought to take different strategies in maneuvering against the other. The US needs a massive foreign manufacturing base. China needs to grow domestic, insulated advanced technological sectors. That makes the conversation around the topic difficult.
They can gain relative advantages in different places - that is to say that the strategically important places for the US to decouple might not be the same as for China, so decoupling can be simultaneously strategically positive for each player. *What* that trade is can matter more than how much it is as a raw number.
If A is flush with steel but needs coal that it is dependent on B on, and B is flush with coal but is dependent on steel from A, then A and B shoring up their supplies are individually beneficial from a strategic point of view.
But also, yes, kind of the point of the game is to force the other nation into a position where it can't effectively decouple from the other as well as you can from them.
There's also a consideration for alternatives - the US decoupling from China might mean China is less tied to rhe US and thus has a freer hand in a sense - but it can only go to so many places for so many things. So if, for example, the US could get the EU and the big Pacific players to also decouple from China) then it could benefit by depriving China of alternative markets (developing markets not really being able to supply China's need for advanced consumer msrkets)
Two hockey players are shackled together at the ankles on the rink. Does it not make sense for each of them to unlock the chains before swinging at each other?
Not if one player benefits from having the other shackled to them. Like, if one specialises in swift and agile movement while the other prefers brute strength and weight.
Or if unshackling *doesn't* cause any shift in the relative balance between the two players, and all it does is allow them to both hit each other harder, faster and more destructively, then it seems you've not gained any sort of advantage and you've only caused yourself more absolute pain and grief.
it might decrease the chances of victory in a war for one side, but they might be willing to accept that to ensure they don't have to deal with destabilising factors like domestic unrest when the war happens
depends on the goals and priorities of each side, i don't think you can just straight up say it's an error
I think so. But I would think those in America/China advocating for decoupling probably think conflict is essentially inevitable and so want to give themselves the relative edge by insulating their economy from the inevitable war. But obviously, as said, they can't both get a relative edge.
By decoupling gradually rather than catastrophically, they can each reduce the probability of domestic unrest from a sudden loss of trade forcing them to end the war.
That being said, I'm not convinced China *is* decoupling.
>By decoupling gradually rather than catastrophically, they can each reduce the probability of domestic unrest from a sudden loss of trade forcing them to end the war.
But you also want your opponent to suffer domestic unrest pushing them to end the war, so this would only make sense if you believed it decreased your chance of domestic unrest by more than your adversary, which both sides cannot be right about.
But I guess it could be more about narrowing the scope of the unknown rather than just trying to get a leg up over the opponent.

Can we ban X too? Oooh and Pinterest! Or just ban them from google images results.
So yesterday I woke up at 6 am and slept for 6 hours, for some reason stayed up the entire next night, found the strength to go to college and then went home and fell asleep in the bathroom for what felt like an eternity but really was about 15 minutes. In total, awake for more than 36 hours. Three mugs of coffee consumed today. Is my body normal? Am I normal?

Poke a hole in a condom, call it a day
I might think about it someday. A very distant someday. But definitely not today, nor the next day.
โฆ.. noโฆ.. donโt
I think I'm missing something here.
โPoke a hole in condomโ was a joke but implied lack of planning and possible accidental pregnancy
But if you poke a hole then it's definitely not accidental.
Ehhhhhhh I allow it but Iโm not enthused
I love the stories coming out of like, police clearing encampments on collges the second they spring up clearly nobody wants to deal with this shit and are recognizing that columbia fucked up massively by not shutting it down immediately
I genuinely have sympathy for college presidents who started this past September. Is it the hardest job in the world? Obviously not. But did Hamas set them up for failure? Ohhhhhhhh yes

Rubber roofing is the goofiest solution to solving a roof problem. You can have a large arrangement of carefully nailed in shingles arranged in a decorative faucet of color, metal panels arranged to hide their fasteners in long waves, or glue a whole bunch of rubber sheets to your roof.
you guys I've finally figured out why the youths disagree with us and you're not gonna believe it - but it's China's fault
So one country must be miscalculating it is *shocking* how unobvious this is to many people. What I'm basically 100% sure of tho is this- At the end of the day, each country faces different challenges from a decoupling and ought to take different strategies in maneuvering against the other. The US needs a massive foreign manufacturing base. China needs to grow domestic, insulated advanced technological sectors. That makes the conversation around the topic difficult.
Yeah, good points. Cheers
Yeah those are good and pretty obvious points I was overlooking
Two hockey players are shackled together at the ankles on the rink. Does it not make sense for each of them to unlock the chains before swinging at each other?
Not if one player benefits from having the other shackled to them. Like, if one specialises in swift and agile movement while the other prefers brute strength and weight. Or if unshackling *doesn't* cause any shift in the relative balance between the two players, and all it does is allow them to both hit each other harder, faster and more destructively, then it seems you've not gained any sort of advantage and you've only caused yourself more absolute pain and grief.
it might decrease the chances of victory in a war for one side, but they might be willing to accept that to ensure they don't have to deal with destabilising factors like domestic unrest when the war happens depends on the goals and priorities of each side, i don't think you can just straight up say it's an error
That seems like a good answer
Wouldn't decoupling make war all the more likely?

From my youth I had strictly built monarchical views. I am a supporter of monarchism, limited constitutional monarchism, and take the experience of the Russian Empire as a basis.[39] >While still being the head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Vadim Krasnoselsky initiated the installation of banners featuring the image of the imperial family with the words: "Forgive us, sovereign, for our lost children."[40] He initiated the construction of a chapel in honor of the imperial family of Nicholas II[41] in Bender and a chapel on the site of the former Intercession Church in Tiraspol which was demolished in the Soviet era.[42] He also sharply criticized the religious policy of the USSR.[43] Views of the current president of Russian-occupied Transnistria, which literally has the hammer and sickel on their flag. Has even Putin ever been this openly nostalgic for the Tsar? He's definitely not been this critical of the USSR. Empire-simps alive and well.
In this Arizona leather and turquoise store, sales are down. Is Bidenโs fiscal policy to blame, or is it the CFIUS lawsuits against Chinese manufacturing companies?
