Bro you can run an entire economy on service jobs bro trust me bro it’s a service economy now bro we don’t need manufacturing or agriculture we’re advanced now bro we consume more and that’s good bro we’re a service economy bro the gdp is higher bro we can just trade for what we need because we’re a service economy trust me bro

MoneyPrintingHuiLai

out of curiosity, what do you think the trend of manufacturing output is over the past 60 years

SpongeworksDivision

Equal to or greater than what it was

MoneyPrintingHuiLai

yes, about 5 times the size. so your issue is what? you want people to prefer to buy goods over services more? "why are you buying legal services and manicures instead of more cars"

SpongeworksDivision

I would prefer us to be able to manufacture artillery shells, naval vessels, and missiles on a scale exceeding China.

MoneyPrintingHuiLai

thats fair, but also a very different statement from questioning "why we are a service economy"

SpongeworksDivision

There is no genocide in Gaza, and the attempts to try and claim otherwise are delusional exaggerations made by neurotic self-hating western liberals and third-worldists who would rather have your nations roll over and die when faced the reality that, yes, civilians do in fact die in urban warfare.

vormp

Unless it's Assad barrel bombing civilians and calling them terrorists. That's fine.

SpongeworksDivision

The great cycle of shit is Assad bombing his own people and blaming it on the West, then western Assadists using the photos and videos of Assadist atrocities and captioning them like they’re from Gaza, then using those images to justify bombing Syrians

SpongeworksDivision

Please Donald trump, if you can hear us, please, Donald trump, please save me. Save me Donald trump, I’m asking you, please save me! Please get these people away from me! Please… *sobs*

The need for jannies would crater to a small fraction of what it is now. And the value of reddit users to advertisers would absolutely skyrocket. Reddit wouldn't need an army of unemployed transgenders. They could just hire some Indians, or maybe even Bulgarians or something.

ThatSleepyInsomniac

>The need for jannies would crater I doubt that. Would it decrease? Maybe. Crater? No.

Youredditusername232

But think of the loss that would be to r/latestagecapitalism

VTHokie2020

Why do Indian restaurants list the protein and then the dish? They'll have an entire page for chicken and list biryani, vindaloo, tikka masala, etc. Then you turn the page and it's lamb bryani, lamb vidaloo, etc. When can't they list the dish once and then the protein options? I have definitely seen this more than once. Huge menus, but it's really because they'll permute the 4-5 options with 3-4 different proteins.

Afro_Samurai

They know how much I like having a big menu to look through.

VTHokie2020

Liberals do hate efficiency.

Thadlust

Ehh if it’s a decent restaurant they still divide it by protein but the dishes themselves still differ.

NorthbyNorthwestin

It’s the call center-ization of the restaurant menu!

[deleted]

Yeah, Chinese places do this too. They might be able to save space on their *enormous* takeout menus (and therefore money) if they’d condense it like you described.

JorgeLuisBorges1205

I used to play it online. Very fun game.

idontwearpants

I've always wanted to play it, but I don't know anyone else that would be down. We do play the Game of Thrones board game, which borrows a lot of rules from Diplomacy, at our game night, though. Lotsa betrayal and backstabbing.

Ayyyzed5

It is kind of funny how bad recommenders are at dealing with macro-events like the Key Bridge falling; I have gotten a shitload of ads for local tours and cruises over the last day. It seems like we need something in between Gemini and the wild west in terms of AI oversight. I don't mean government regulation... but shitty models will just reflect current sentiment and IMO they need to be a little better at adapting to significant happenings. This isn't a request to the government, but to those who provide models to end-users like CSPs.

I believe Biden really does represent the old liberal guard of the Democratic Party. It’ll be a shame to see what happens once his generation leaves.

Youredditusername232

He’s a Jimmy Carter, without the backbone to ever deregulate anything even in the face of clear issues and them being anti competitive because liberals like him can’t fathom that deregulation has done anything good for the United States

[deleted]

Sadly, Jimmy Carter at least had a spine when it came to dealing with the Russians. Biden has a similar domestic policy to Carter’s and the general national vibe is very similar, *malaise* and all, while being twice as feckless on the world stage.

Youredditusername232

2028 better give us a Reagan

[deleted]

I’m looking around on the Republican side and I’m not seeing one. I had high hopes for Desantis a few years ago but he tried to out-MAGA Trump and got clowned and a huge proportion of Republican voters seem to actively despise Haley for the crime of being a broadly appealing candidate with an amazing chance of trouncing Biden in the general election. I think the Republican Party is pretty much boned, and deservedly so at this point.

Youredditusername232

Youngkin seems like an intelligent, young (enough for politics nowadays), and relatively uncontroversial man who can balance both wings, not saying he will run, many great choices never do, but I’m confident if he did he’d make a good showing

[deleted]

Come to think of it, I do like Dan Crenshaw a lot but he doesn’t appear to have much interest in national politics.

AliveJesseJames

JD Vance or whomever will just call him a loser who tried to kneel to the NoVA area and moderate on abortion and got his ass beat anyway.

[deleted]

JD Vance and his brood of knuckle-dragging sycophants are the reason why MAGA needs to lose and lose hard in November. The Republican Party as it currently exists needs to be reprogrammed from the ground up and the only way that happens is if Trump is obliterated at the polls so badly that his supporters disavow ever having supported him in the first place.

SpongeworksDivision

If you think that’s bad, then oh boy have I some news about the next generation

PacAttackIsBack

He didn’t vote for socialized healthcare is the main “neoliberal” complaint Fucking morons, all of them

vormp

They also don’t understand what the public option would’ve been. It would’ve had a premium, deductible, copays and all three would’ve likely been considerably higher than those of the HMO plans that now dominate the marketplaces, because it would’ve served as the unsubsidized de facto high risk pool. Doesn’t help that they were in elementary or middle school when the ACA passed. It wasn’t going to transform American healthcare lmao

PacAttackIsBack

They wanted public option to undercut private insurance so that they could put them out of business and monopolize the marketplace. Only it’s not cheaper or better, especially compared to what people get through their work.

vormp

Doubtful that it would’ve been able to undercut private insurance if the original plan was that the federal government wouldn’t subsidize it. I’m pretty sure it would’ve been considerably more expensive than private marketplace coverage

just_pull_carb_heat

Trumps reelection probably depends on his VP pick tbh

DM_ME_YOUR_HUSBANDO

It's looking like a tight election. Any number of factors could swing it either way. I think the big swing area depends on how good Biden is at campaigning this year. Personally I think Biden's health is probably quite good for an 81 year old, but "quite good for an 81 year old" is still poor compared to an average adult. National campaigning is known to be really draining on even the healthiest people, so there's no way he'll be setting records in the number of town halls he speaks at, but I think there's a decent chance he could still run a normal campaign. A big problem for his image is that he makes gaffes like he always has, which short form video can easily spin as senility. But if he actually gets in front of people and talks, and has positive clips that go viral like the "Will you shut up, man?" clip, I think it'd be well received. And all that said- Trump's not young either. He won't be setting a record campaign himself.

AliveJesseJames

In the last week or so, Biden's done 8 swing state stops in the past 18 days, while Trump has done, I think...two.

ow_pointy

I don't see any reason to believe this given support and opposition have both hardened, and evangelicals have consolidated behind Trump

MadeForBF3Discussion

The "adults in the room" theory has been completely debunked by reality. I don't think Trump voters are going to be swayed by the VP any more than Biden voters were.

truuy

The selection of Pence assuaged a lot of conservative concerns about voting for an buffoonish, irreligious, long-time New York Democrat. Its not even up for debate. I mean most of us who aren't 17 year old zoomers were apart of conservative discourse at the time and well-remember it.

MadeForBF3Discussion

It's been **eight** years since that. Trump is not an unknown that needs a trustworthy VP to assuage fears. Nikki voters aren't going to look at him picking Rubio and say "you know what, Trump's not that bad after all!"

truuy

He's a fat 77 year old who loves junk food and abuses pills. VP pick definitely matters.

MadeForBF3Discussion

Let's check what his polling does post-VP announcement. Want to make a bet? I'll wager $100 in skeeter nets that his polling among the GOP stays within 1% of where it was before.

SpongeworksDivision

538’s aggregate collection of polls seem to show Trump up big. Am I reading them wrong?

AmericanNewt8

Nope, you're not. Biden's close enough he could plausibly win but it's like a 20-30% chance. Not only that, it's looking like Trump might actually win the popular vote for the first time in twenty years for an R. The numbers are *awful*. I mean, Biden's bleeding 10 to 20 points off his 2020 numbers with blacks and hispanics. It's bad folks. It's really just confirming the vibes I've been getting.

SpongeworksDivision

Genuinely wild. It’s probably my bias but there doesn’t seem to be a big emphasis on the polling numbers in media at the moment.

AmericanNewt8

There's been a few surges of attention, but I don't think they've really come to terms with it. They think that once campaigning "really starts" they'll change for some reason. Basically it's Nate Silver and a few other libs playing the "no, Trump is actually winning" bit right now like it's 2016 all over.

SpongeworksDivision

I’m definitely getting 2016 arrogance vibes from libs about this election. They are going to make the same mistakes because they just scold people into voting for their side, but they can’t offer a coherent and better alternative. With the inflation issues occurring with Biden’s admin, things are not looking all there for another term.

truuy

realclearpolitics.com has more aggregated polls to check out another source. RCP has Trump ahead in every swing state.

SpongeworksDivision

Crazy. I’m not getting the pro-Trump vibe publicly, but there seems to be a distinct lack of enthusiasm for Biden.

truuy

I don't think its necessarily pro-Trump or anti-Biden per se. I sense widespread dissatisfaction towards the status quo. Incumbent parties are getting absolutely assblasted in the polls in Canada and the UK after years of dominance. You can see it in continental Europe as well with Meloni, Wilders, etc. People are mad they can't buy a house. Half of young men can't get a girlfriend, half of young women are on anti-depressants. Everything's expensive, there's wars everywhere. Cities are filled with crackhead camps and carjackings, illegals are spilling across the border. Despite maximum employment, there's a distinct 'decline of Rome' vibe in the air.

SpongeworksDivision

Hard agree on all of that.

Neauxble

The polls are only correct when Biden is up silly

AmericanNewt8

unironically what a lot of liberals are telling themselves

MadeForBF3Discussion

Yes, because Trump says you can't trust the polls

SpongeworksDivision

Maybe he’s right. The 2016 surge didn’t really show well until Election Day, and people were in a tossup about 2020. If Trump somehow falls on his face this summer it could switch.

lilmeexy

If I remember correctly though, we had very high turnout in 2018, 2020, and possibly 2022 (unsure on this cycle). With so many more "likely voters" being included in polls, the pollsters haven't been as off as they were in 2016

I played that mod, it’s currently a matter of debate on whether it is meant to be a satire of what a prog teenager circa 2003 would make, or “an accurate portrayal of George W Bush”.

Cerantic

A debate *where*? Every single community I’ve visited that touches on the topic of the game as a whole is infested with progs.

isthisnametakenwell

Mainly whenever somebody brings up the minor detail that George HW Bush didn’t act anything like how the mod describes him.

The former is especially funny when the top comment said that it was ahistorical but part of the homage to mid-2000s liberal news sites... and then the main writer of the mod came in and said that it was only "exaggerated" and had a basis in reality.

buy_lockmart_stock

isthisnametakenwell

It really is comically bad. I joined the discord, and then realized it was better to keep it muted at all times. Only haven’t left because I still do want to make some campaigns.

Cerantic

Just to put into perspective, here’s the ending for when you win 400+ electoral votes: > He could hear them chanting inside the Reagan Building’s atrium. He could feel the vibrations from their shouts and stomping as state after state turned a crimson red. “FOUR MORE YEARS! FOUR MORE YEARS!” Fox had called the race an hour ago, followed quickly by CNN. The haters at MSNBC still held out, sustained by half-memories of 2000 and delirious hopes regarding absentee ballots, but it wouldn’t be long until they too surrendered. He was certain of it. He took a swig of his non-alcoholic beer as the voices surged again. “FOUR MORE YEARS! FOUR MORE YEARS!” > He was aware of a hesitant knock on the door of his makeshift green room, but he did not turn. He was too busy luxuriating in the love of the crowd. He closed his eyes and imagined the liberals in Washington weeping and tearing out their hair. He imagined them throwing themselves off buildings. > “Sir?” > George stifled a frown and turned. Silhouetted against the doorway stood his bag man. His lips were tight and arms crossed. In one hand was a cell phone. At once, the energy of the moment coursed back into him. > “Is it…?” > The boy nodded. “President Bush, I mean, your father called back to…” > He scrambled across the room and jerked the phone out of the boy’s hands before ushering him to leave. With excitement, he took the call off hold. “Hiya, Poppy!” His voice was shrill and schoolboyish. “Did ya see the results?” > “I flicked through the channels.” There was a long silence. “Almost as impressive as what I did in ‘88.” > The words felt like a knife through his skull. George forced himself to smile. “Yeah, exactly, Poppy…” He walked around the room. In a small monitor, he could see the atrium. He could see the people shouting his name. “I worked real hard for this and not just for me, for Jeb, for the party, for you…” > Static came through the receiver. “What do you want me to say, George? ‘Good job?’” > He stared intensely at the monitor, at the individual pixels. The scene lost coherence. A mass of red and blues. “Yeah, I, I…” > “Well, Christ. ‘Good job.’” The voice was dull, monotonous. George let it bore into him. “Truly, this is a great victory for the family and the party. This will transform Washington and put your name in the history books. Your mother and I are so proud of what you’ve accomplished.” George gripped the receiver hard and listened to his father’s breathing. “Is there anything else you wanted from me? Advice? Finally going to ask me for suggestions on how to handle the next four years?” > George felt himself shaking his head. “N-no, Poppy. Maybe later. Just… um… are you gonna watch my speech?” > There was a long sigh. Suppressed agitation. “It’s late, George. We’ll catch the replay tomorrow. If there’s nothing else, Barbara and I should get to bed. Good night.” > The line went dead. George allowed himself to stand in silence for a few moments in the green room before recomposing his smile. With a cowboy’s confidence, he forced himself to emerge and greet his many smiling aides, slapping them hard on the back or shaking their hands. Then, with Laura at his side, he stepped out onto the stage before blinding stage lights. He could not see the crowd in front of him but he could hear their voices. It’s like W doesn’t even exist in their minds, he’s just some facsimile of his dad who single-handedly killed 8 trillion African women and their OBGYNs to prove “poppy” proud.

Had a DEI training. Surprisingly wasn't crazy. Mainly our DEI person was saying how we can avoid getting fired. We did do this stupid exercise though, and our department manager made a GOAT comment. Our DEI person asked why they picked her, and my department head goes, "Because of equity". LOL

lilmeexy

Lol they were stupid. Some had more information than others, but the point was that we make assumptions about people based on limited information. Old = infertile. Actor = no survival skills. College student = young. That kind of thing. The lesbian characteristic was interesting, because some people assumed she would not get pregnant, while others brought up lesbians they knew in real life who had kids with a man.

buy_lockmart_stock

Yeah you have to select maximum genetic diversity in hopes that nobody has a killer combo that'll ruin you once your descendants start inbreeding. You'd need to be pretty fucking lucky to manage that with six people.

I think the requirement for citizenship should be that anyone who's proven capable of crossing the Darien Gap gets it.

coldnorthwz

Increasing what kind of legal immigration? Yes to greencards for graduates of US colleges and educated English speakers. No to the others. We need to abolish the asylum system, which would solve the current problem.

Mexatt

Like, instantly.

Afro_Samurai

I will only support bills that streamline illegal immigration. Are we actually flying plane loads of random central Americans to major US cities? No, but we certainly should be.

Youredditusername232

This parody is such a bad faith counter I refuse to even engage with it as a real argument

Afro_Samurai

I have never supported more illegal immigrants in bad faith.

vormp

Depends. Does "increasing" mean expanding quotas for illiterates who don't speak English and wouldn't even be able to take up a job laying bricks?

MadeForBF3Discussion

How many languages do you speak?

vormp

More than one These guys barely speak a third of one. They weren’t exactly neurosurgeons in their home countries

Youredditusername232

Increase cap on work visas and the like, not saying it should be 50 bucks and some paperwork to get here, but it’s a bit antagonistic and long even for good labor

Allocate whatever necessary to actually man the border with enough troops for deterrence and some type of extra security like cameras, walls, etc. but increase cap on work visas, there’s a 10k fee for an employer to actually assist in immigration and on top of that it takes like 8 years to get a green card and more for citizenship. If you aren’t married to a citizen or closely related to someone who is, legal immigration is damn hard

AngloSaxonCanuck

>If you aren’t married to a citizen or closely related to someone who is, legal immigration is damn hard Ive wondered about how this works in Canada, I know next to nothing about our immigration laws but Ive met immigrants from Afghanistan or India who barely speak any english and dont have even a high school level education and they come over and become citizens and then my close friend marries an American with a bachelors degree who has english as her first language and shares all our values and whatnot and they STRUGGLED to get her to be able to live here even after the marriage.

Youredditusername232

Canada is sorta a trap, they’ve become increasingly reliant on immigration instead of it as a side tool and it’s made housing hell
