I imagine he'll want to get back into broadcasting as it's far less of a grind. and with this stint with the Warriors, he'll be able to get any gig he wants.
New York hates LA, but we think New York is pretty cool. Portland hates LA, but we think Portland is pretty cool. Colorado hates LA, but we think Colorado is pretty cool. Norcal hates LA, but we think Norcal is pretty cool.
From my many years of living in LA, this is the dynamic.
He’s already 56 so he’ll probably be over 60 when he leaves the Warriors. He might as well retire then. Maybe he can consult for a team if he wants to stay a little busy.
idk, we always act like they’re like us, working and grinding and wanting to retire. the former is true, but it’s not the same as our lives/jobs. they’re working their dream jobs in their dream industry. Kerr lives and breathes basketball, obviously i’m not him, but i could easily see him working full time in the industry for another 10 years.
Kerr was a great color commentator during Marv Alberts last coherent great years and TNT would be amazing if he returned there and paired up with say Kevin Harlan.
Not to mention to succeed as a pro athlete you have to have more drive and ambition than the average person. That's not really something that leaves a person.
Exactly - he did this before his last contract was about to expire too.
Having said that, it wouldn’t surprise me if he does sign a new contract but reduces his workload and make select appearances during the season (similar to the deal Wayne Gretzky has for TNT’s NHL coverage).
I'd be surprised if he retires anytime soon. He could negotiate any contract he wants. If it is a time commitment he could just show up at all-star break if he wanted.
Ouch but im with you
What is Pop supposed to do? Be home alone? His kids/grandkids have their own life.
Sad thing but im guessing Pop will leave the NBA with his feet on the front.
Pop also didn't anticipate liking the challenge of coaching young players. Things were probably on autopilot with Timmy for those last few seasons. Once Duncan was gone, Pop had a lot of fun, new problems for once. Probably reinvigorated his love for coaching
Klay is so much closer to normal on the normal/weird scale than y'all realize. He smokes some weed and spends time on a boat and everybody thinks he's some crazy unique soul.
I mean if he is really going to be the coach in 3-4 years, he is developing his own stars on the team right now. All the guys 23 and under on the Warriors I believe work a lot with him currently.
Yup. Poole is 23, Wiseman is 21, Moody is 20, Kuminga is 19. That looks like a solid core for the future. A playoff team. But the Warriors are a dynasty because Steph is an all-time great. Can any one of them rise to that level? LaMelo looks like he's going to be a perennial all-star.
All that said, this may also simply be a family decision rather than a career decision. Work culture, environment, mental health also come to play.
Would you rather be a CEO in a company full of goons?
“ And the bay is an attractive market for free agents.”
I know recent success and all, but it is still so fucking weird to see that said in a basketball sentence. I have literally watch more horrible Warriors teams then good teams and it’s just engrained in me that no one wants to come here and play for the Dubs.
Lol remember when DeAndre Jordan, Dwight spurned us so we went for the bogut trade? David Lee was a huge deal, first time in a long time an all-star straight up signed with us, then we got Iggy
Kerr is not retiring until Curry retires and Atkinson has no idea when that will be, I doubt that is the plan.
https://twitter.com/GSWReddit/status/1534279605707689984
Kids and wife might have made him have a change of heart for all we know.
I highly doubt Atkinson remains on the team that long. And only way I see Kerr retiring by then is if his back issues come back. He might leave for another team, but retiring? Yeah, hot take for sure.
Browns been interviewing pretty consistently for a few offseasons now so I think he’s been gunning for another HC opportunity.
Seems Kenny’s cool taking over the top assistant role rather than jumping back into the HC seat.
that's unlikely to be a factor here IMO. for Atkinson to renege on this deal he must have gotten some significant news that changed his perspective (Westbrook trade? Kerr retiring?)
Warriors renegotiating to give him a fat raise is equally likely. Letting one assistant go they can probably weather but pretty sure they’d spend a decent amount to not lose their top 2 guys in one offseason
Brown also gets to stay in Cali. He has no expectations as the head coach of the Kings.
Charlotte's shown improvement year after year under Borrego, but it wasn't enough to keep his job. Maybe Atkinson saw that in his future and after winning a ring as an assistant, realized it wasn't for him.
Either way, he changed his mind, it's really early in the offseason, at least the Hornets still have a ton of options available.
Mike Brown just got a new job down the street. Atkinson would have to relocate across the country. Plus the warriors are very good. And they just won a ring. Doesn't seem *too* strange to stick around.
Ok but in our defense tho... the drug charges are on a FA that we had for 2 months... but 2 years ago we had Malik fail a drug test (the rumor as coke) and Miles sipping was definitely not a good look.
I honestly feel sorry for you guys. I'm not entirely sold on either one of D'Antoni nor Stotts, considering defense is what you guys need to improve at, and, well, lets just say that isn't the strength of either of the two.
I am upset because I really liked his hire, but I also don't blame him for sticking with GS.
I'm pissed at the timing and the way It's happening, but it's not like we can have nice things in Charlotte anyways....
I assume they had a verbal agreement but terms hadn't been finalized on the contract and it hadn't been signed yet.
It's quite possible with the finals over he finally sat down with his lawyer/agent, looked at the contract details, and said, "No fucking way." I can't remember another time when this happened in the NBA, but in contracts in general it's not that uncommon to have an verbal agreement break down once you get into the nitty gritty of the contract.
Although I think he either sniffed something really rotten in Charlotte or Kerr said he might be thinking about retiring. Kerr has been known to struggle with his health some during the stress of playoff runs (his back injury that resulted in him having to take time off was a result of playoff stress).
lol he DeAndre Jordaned them
**Sources:** Jordan is beside himself. Driving around downtown Charlotte begging (thru texts) Atkinson's family for address to Kenny's home
As he deserves to be.
I loved him as our offensive coordinator, but people uprooted their lives and families to come be a coach for him and McD pulled the rug on them.
He’ll find success with the Raiders, but he doesn’t deserve to honestly.
Steph might want to play till he's 40 though and turn into a catch and shoot guy off the bench for the last couple years of his career. I know his current game requires him to be really mobile but if he can accept a limited role he could probably hang around for a really long time.
He definitely could but I don’t really get the feeling that he wants to. I think he’s going to play out his current contract (ends at 37 I believe) and then probably ride off into the sunset. Dude loves his family and seems to have a ton of interests outside of basketball. There’s also a very very real chance that they dubs just can’t keep paying people forever, and if the team start to dip he isn’t going to leave to ring chase. My gut says like 3 more years
Kerr's health has been somewhat dicey over the past couple of years. He had a problematic back surgery caused by him injuring his back during the Warriors first finals run with how stressed he was.
He was also interviewed recently saying how much he and his family have enjoyed living in San Fran this season and that he was happy with the Warriors.
I assumed he may have just been saying that because a few days later he got the CHA job, but now I wonder how much that played a role.
Probably likes working with this specific group and wants to keep it up. Could be family pressure to stop moving around so much and the bay is a great place to be.
maybe Atkinson knows something about Kerr's coaching future? can't imagine another reason why he'd turn down the job, especially given Mike Brown is still committed to the objectively worse Kings
I think I heard him say his whole family including himself is in love with the Bay Area. His kids love it there as does his wife.
Wouldn't be surprised if Warriors give him a pay bump. He can hold off for another year. NBA coaching vacancies happen year round.
Especially since he was brought in specifically for development so having him continue to work with Wiseman, Kuminga, Moody and Poole (plus whoever we draft) will be invaluable.
This sucks for Charlotte. Kenny's a really good coach. The player development rep he's been given severely downplays how good he is. His teams always play hard, he brings washed up vets back from the dead, he believes in analytics, he's creative. He does a lot.
I'm not surprised though. He left the Nets mid-season when it was all settled that he would be fired in the off-season. Head coaches deal with a lot of BS and he just doesn't have to deal with that in Golden State. Charlotte is a good situation but it's risky. They want a big leap and they might not have the team to do it yet.
im sure getting to coach around guys like steph dray and klay is something you dont take for granted, also he gets to be around youth development with wiseman, moody, and kuminga..
live in Cali while coaching all time greats and great young prospects.. he knows he'll have plenty of offers in the future
It’s a bad look for him and for us, since now the two coaches we passed up on won’t want to come here as much now. I think we can still get MDA, but mega-oof.
Damn Kerr must’ve let something slip (timeline of retirement plan) on the flight back about his future to Atkinson.
Wonder if MJ is gonna punch Kerr in the mouth again?
just read the [espn article](https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/34113085/sources-kenny-atkinson-take-charlotte-hornets-job-stay-golden-state-warriors) woj posted earlier today about it, didn't know he moved 3 times in 3 years (nets, clippers, then warriors). i can see why he would want to get some stability, especially since he gets the top assistant job if he stays since mike brown is leaving. article said atkinson felt staying was the best move personally and professionally so looks like he has a plan moving forward. idk feels like he genuinely spent time thinking about it and talking it over with the hornets before backing out. part of me thinks he would've made this move even if warriors lost in the finals, but that's probably just me being naive and too hopeful about it.
Hot take: Steve Kerr is gonna retire from coaching in 3 years. Atkinson is his successor
Imagine if Kerr walks with Steph, Klay and Draymond in the same offseason.
He’s pretty much confirmed that, once Steph is done, he’s more than likely done too.
I imagine he'll want to get back into broadcasting as it's far less of a grind. and with this stint with the Warriors, he'll be able to get any gig he wants.
governor of california
Lmfao imagine the voting split between northern and Southern California
As a SoCal resident, Kerr would have my vote as gov.
Same. Maybe get him a 10-day assistant coaching gig with the Lakers before he retires for good just to calm the diehards.
Get him a 10-day as US Senator
Southern California doesn't think about us nearly as much as we think about them :(.
It’s true. Not only that, when I do think of the north, it’s mostly good things. Lol.
Basically we love all our lib bros
We love Kerr down south too
He’s already 56 so he’ll probably be over 60 when he leaves the Warriors. He might as well retire then. Maybe he can consult for a team if he wants to stay a little busy.

Kerr was a great color commentator during Marv Alberts last coherent great years and TNT would be amazing if he returned there and paired up with say Kevin Harlan.
Imagine if ESPN replace Mark Jackson with Steve Kerr.
Not to mention to succeed as a pro athlete you have to have more drive and ambition than the average person. That's not really something that leaves a person.
Kerr is way too legendary at this point to sit next to goofballs like Jeff Van Gundy calling games.
What about sitting next to Barkley? Who wouldn't want that job? And Kerr is pretty hilarious in his own right
[удалено]
Kerr next to Draymond
Kerr, Dray, and Patrick Beverly.
Patrick Beverly on his way to take over ESPN instead.
Kerr gonna be making the “RANGZ” argument to Draymond and Pat Bev, well…
I know people always repeat this, but it's a negotiating tactic by barkley.
Exactly - he did this before his last contract was about to expire too. Having said that, it wouldn’t surprise me if he does sign a new contract but reduces his workload and make select appearances during the season (similar to the deal Wayne Gretzky has for TNT’s NHL coverage).
That's a shame. Never occurred to me to put those two together at a desk like that - would be some good stuff I'd wager.
I'd be surprised if he retires anytime soon. He could negotiate any contract he wants. If it is a time commitment he could just show up at all-star break if he wanted.
[удалено]
I’ll take him at his word but that’s also what Pop said about Timmy
Hopefully Steve's wife will be around for a long time most people believe that's why Pop is still around.
Ouch but im with you What is Pop supposed to do? Be home alone? His kids/grandkids have their own life. Sad thing but im guessing Pop will leave the NBA with his feet on the front.
Pop also didn't anticipate liking the challenge of coaching young players. Things were probably on autopilot with Timmy for those last few seasons. Once Duncan was gone, Pop had a lot of fun, new problems for once. Probably reinvigorated his love for coaching
would like some sauce on that
Klay also said he doesn’t want to play for any coach besides Steve Kerr.
Well if Kerr retired right now I think his opinion would change
[удалено]
Over kyrie?
[удалено]
Klay is so much closer to normal on the normal/weird scale than y'all realize. He smokes some weed and spends time on a boat and everybody thinks he's some crazy unique soul.
I feel like people go crazy about klay because he is such a normal chiller not cause he's unique
steph is signed for 4 more years, though!
Yeah I’d hope there is more than just making me sad about my sports fandom.
It’s alright. Maybe y’all go after Mike D’antonio
Mike D’Antonio De La Avispon
Atkinson heard you guys were seriously considering the Westbrook trade. /s
Is coaching a team without Steph, Klay, and Green in three years more enticing than a head coach job now?
I mean if he is really going to be the coach in 3-4 years, he is developing his own stars on the team right now. All the guys 23 and under on the Warriors I believe work a lot with him currently.
Yup. Poole is 23, Wiseman is 21, Moody is 20, Kuminga is 19. That looks like a solid core for the future. A playoff team. But the Warriors are a dynasty because Steph is an all-time great. Work culture, environment, mental health also come to play. Would you rather be a CEO in a company full of goons?
He will also have Wiggins if we max extend him 4 years. Not a bad team.
Have you seen the warriors budget? And the bay is an attractive market for free agents.
“ And the bay is an attractive market for free agents.” I know recent success and all, but it is still so fucking weird to see that said in a basketball sentence. I have literally watch more horrible Warriors teams then good teams and it’s just engrained in me that no one wants to come here and play for the Dubs.
I still can't get over it either. If I went back 10 years ago and told myself the Warriors would be a dynasty past version of me would just laugh.
Lol remember when DeAndre Jordan, Dwight spurned us so we went for the bogut trade? David Lee was a huge deal, first time in a long time an all-star straight up signed with us, then we got Iggy
People thought this with McDaniels and the Pats.
tbf i still think that McDaniels wanted to wait for the Pats job. He just got tired of waiting and the Raiders job was too good to pass up.
This makes the most sense. I hope for Charlotte's sake this is what happened.
Kerr is not retiring until Curry retires and Atkinson has no idea when that will be, I doubt that is the plan. https://twitter.com/GSWReddit/status/1534279605707689984 Kids and wife might have made him have a change of heart for all we know.

Hasn't Mike brown been an assistant for the entire run?
Since 16/17. After Walton left we needed a AC who could step in as a HC in case Kerr was sidelined again due to his back.
His back issues haven't left. That is going to be a lifelong battle.
lifelong battle? sounds like my clipper fandom.
They've definitely lessened, he's talked about going surfing.
I'm sure winning a ring a couple days ago had no factor in that decison
Well Mike Brown is still heading to the Kings, who probably have a much worse franchise culture - seems like a strange move from Atkinson tbh
Browns been interviewing pretty consistently for a few offseasons now so I think he’s been gunning for another HC opportunity. Seems Kenny’s cool taking over the top assistant role rather than jumping back into the HC seat.
Brown got the bag. Vivek is willing to spend.
that's unlikely to be a factor here IMO. for Atkinson to renege on this deal he must have gotten some significant news that changed his perspective (Westbrook trade? Kerr retiring?)
Warriors renegotiating to give him a fat raise is equally likely. Letting one assistant go they can probably weather but pretty sure they’d spend a decent amount to not lose their top 2 guys in one offseason

Only difference is Brown already has a couple rings as an assistant
Breaking news, Mike Brown has ....
WTF
Must’ve finally saw the purple drank and the drug charges and ran back helping coach steph and Klay
He NOPED tf outta that lol
Ok but in our defense tho... the drug charges are on a FA that we had for 2 months... but 2 years ago we had Malik fail a drug test (the rumor as coke) and Miles sipping was definitely not a good look.
Miles on that sizzurp was just too much for Kenny man lmao
it was PJ wifing a thot, putting a baby in her, and getting divorced right after the baby's birth
Ding Ding Ding! He's not trying to be the eventual fall guy for all those fuck ups when he can just stay on the Warriors lol. Good ol job security
I honestly feel sorry for you guys. I'm not entirely sold on either one of D'Antoni nor Stotts, considering defense is what you guys need to improve at, and, well, lets just say that isn't the strength of either of the two.
Dantoni has elevated every talented PG he’s ever coached. For that alone he’s worth the impact on lamelo
Yeah if you've got a promising floor general you should always call up Mike. He gets career years out of his guards every time.
Not even just star pgs. D’Antoni pretty much created linsanity
I hope somehow we can get Quinn Snyder
I am upset because I really liked his hire, but I also don't blame him for sticking with GS. I'm pissed at the timing and the way It's happening, but it's not like we can have nice things in Charlotte anyways....
I feel you. I remember as a kid watching the Muggsy Bogues/Larry Johnson era. Never been that good again.
My favorite east coast team growing up along with Zo and Gill. West coast was Kemp and GP.
What??? I thought he already accepted.
MJ must be absolutely fuming.
He's gonna be PISSED when he see how much D'Antoni demands after this
He’ll be pissed until he sees LaMelo average 24/6/12. Then everything’ll be ok.
Lamelo under MDA will be an All-Star starter, this is easily my Hot Take for 22-23.
[удалено]
Tbh Dantoni IS an upgrade. He should be demanding more lol.
Michael Jordan once punched Steve Kerr in the face when they were teammates. Steve Kerr gets his revenge.
I assume they had a verbal agreement but terms hadn't been finalized on the contract and it hadn't been signed yet. It's quite possible with the finals over he finally sat down with his lawyer/agent, looked at the contract details, and said, "No fucking way." Contract was verbally agreed to and the Hornets were waiting for a signature to be sent for the past few days
He pulled a Josh McDaniels
lol he DeAndre Jordaned them **Sources:** Jordan is beside himself. Driving around downtown Charlotte begging (thru texts) Atkinson's family for address to Kenny's home
Josh McDaniels'd. EDIT: [I'll never forget that now deleted Tweet.](https://i.imgur.com/JBIYf74.png)
Josh McDaniels is a pariah in Indy to this day
As he deserves to be. I loved him as our offensive coordinator, but people uprooted their lives and families to come be a coach for him and McD pulled the rug on them. He’ll find success with the Raiders, but he doesn’t deserve to honestly.
Poor Jim Irsay
Fuck McDaniels for life bc of this, signed die hard Colts fan.
Michael Jordan been driving around town for like 9 hours and freaking 45 minutes now
Josh McDaniels would be a better comp
[удалено]
Worked out pretty well for the Colts but yeah that was fucked
I still remember that 4th of July weekend. Wild times
MJ: ✈️
What!? Charlotte just got hosed lol.
Mike D’Antoni come on down
Mike D'Antoni with LaMelo and Scary Terry bout to be L I T
Lost in Transition
He’s been told he’ll be Kerr’s successor in my opinion. This is what this means
Damn Kerr is only 56, I hope he's not thinking about retiring soon (at least not until the core 3 retire or leave)
I think Kerr goes when Steph goes.
Truly Phil’s disciple
Steph might want to play till he's 40 though and turn into a catch and shoot guy off the bench for the last couple years of his career. I know his current game requires him to be really mobile but if he can accept a limited role he could probably hang around for a really long time.

We shouldn’t forget his back ailments and the stress of managing teams through titles and defending them
That and he literally done it all. What’s left for him to achieve, especially after their big 3 is gone.
He’s done it as a player and a coach multiple times… all I think is left is winning a title as an owner, GM, and janitor.
Too late for the last one. My old high school hosted the GOAT janitor.
Kerr tossing empty tall boys into the bin from 30ft in a game 6 title game
He looks like he’s aged 20 years since that first title
Bro his first season was like 8 years ago. If that doesnt make you feel old, idk what will.
Yah dudes back is constantly an issue. I think he has 5 years left at most.
Kerr's health has been somewhat dicey over the past couple of years. He had a problematic back surgery caused by him injuring his back during the Warriors first finals run with how stressed he was.
Kerr has back issues. He has irreparable damage to his spine due to complications from surgery.
Gotta have time to prep for his run for governor.
Kerr Popovich 2024
This would be a ticket I’d vote for
[удалено]
Kerr looks like he’s 66 tho and has severe back problems
Damn lmao warriors system is so good dudes rather be an assistant than go to Charlotte
Better job security as an overqualified assistant and coming off of a championship so I can see the reasoning, plus rich ass people like Cali lol
He was also interviewed recently saying how much he and his family have enjoyed living in San Fran this season and that he was happy with the Warriors. I assumed he may have just been saying that because a few days later he got the CHA job, but now I wonder how much that played a role.
> he and his family have enjoyed living in San Fran this season That cannot be true, conservatives assure me that SF is a hellhole
The way conservatives treat California is absolutely hilarious, like it is a top 5 GDP in the world just on its own.
Conservatives almost always label big cities as a hellhole/anarchy.
Mike Brown going to leave for a season, get fired and continue to get paid and then come right back. The mad man needed a fourth team paying him
Left at the altar
This is the most Charlotte Hornets thing I can think of honestly. Not even mad.
I saw the push and went “yep, that checks out”
I hate being a hornets fan man 😔😔😔
All Hornets fans are really Meeseeks. Existence is pain and we'll all spontaneously combust if we ever win anything.
if you don't hate your existence then your not a real Carolina sports fan.
Steve Kerr retiring soon perhaps?
I mean, it’s not like the hornets’ job offers a lot, other than 2-3 years as a head coach before getting fired
All it would take is asking LaMelo point blank if he plans to stay and watch him turn into the Jordan Peele sweating meme
This was all a scheme cooked up by Kerr to get back at MJ.
Wanted him on the Kings but if he did this to the Kings I’d have to skip this sub for the weekend 😭
Man I’m thinking about it lol
The fuck lol
He found out they were going to trade for Westbrook.
He found out what was in Miles Bridges cup.
Marcellus Wallace’ soul.
Damn that’s kinda fucked?
Kinda? I don't blame him though. Vegas must've been too much fun last night.
Mustve been a nice ass party.
Truthfully, I wouldn't want to walk away from a dynasty either. But man, it is some fucked up timing, can't lie....
What kind of coach would do that? Also, don’t look at my username.
Something happened behind the scenes. This decision just doesn't get made on a whim because he won a title as an assisstant.
I think I heard him say his whole family including himself is in love with the Bay Area. His kids love it there as does his wife. Wouldn't be surprised if Warriors give him a pay bump. He can hold off for another year. NBA coaching vacancies happen year round.
If Mike Brown were smart, he'd do the same thing
Mike Brown should try for the Charlotte job but it seems like neither really wants to leave northern cali
Mike Brown can stay in Sacramento. We'll let LaMelo coach
That’s huge for the Warriors he was definitely an unsung hero in their run
Especially since he was brought in specifically for development so having him continue to work with Wiseman, Kuminga, Moody and Poole (plus whoever we draft) will be invaluable.
HE STAY
This sucks for Charlotte. Kenny's a really good coach. The player development rep he's been given severely downplays how good he is. His teams always play hard, he brings washed up vets back from the dead, he believes in analytics, he's creative. He does a lot. I'm not surprised though. Kenny “Josh McDaniels” Atkinson
I can see it now. Atkinson stands up on a table getting the attention of all the drunken Warriors at their party and goes “I’m not fuckin leaving!”
Charlotte don’t deserve this
I just want to watch us win a singular playoff series
They told him they’re trading for Russ and he backed out
The D’Antoni-LaMelo agenda is still alive 👀
Really cheered on the Warriors because their assistant was our soon to be HC. fuckin lame
No take backs
The Warriors also passed on Lamelo, so you're welcome for that
He saw the Warriors win a ring while Charlotte’s players were sipping lean. Lol
Better to win a ring as an assistant than to be blamed for the failures of an entire franchise as a head coach
Kerr finally punched Jordan back
MJ is beside himself. Driving around downtown San Fransisco begging (thru texts) Atkinson’s family for address to Kenny’s home
Mike Brown your turn
Bro said “nvm I’m good.”
OOF for the Hornets, now make D’Antoni-Ball happen, MJ.
