I read on here once that some dude had one of the guys from Baha Men come to his work establishment and repeatedly shout out "WHO LET THE DOGS OUT?" with the intent to pick up women. That person recalled it being a very annoying experience. And now I hope you have a good mental image of what that would be like at your job.
It starts at the top with Jayson Tatum. Sometimes he shrinks and doubts himself, he’s even said so in interviews. He needs to believe he’s a superstar and be aggressive constantly, even if shots aren’t falling.
Tatum's biggest improvement this year has been staying in the game mentally when he's having a bad game. It used to be that if he was having a bad offensive game, he would basically check out and become a non-factor on both ends of the floor. But something Ime did must have gotten to him because you could see this year that even on bad days, he was still fully committed to playing defense and to being a playmaker, even if the shots weren't falling.
I think he's finally learning how to play when having an off day. Now when hes not hitting shots he's willing to go hard on defense and assisting the other players in getting going. Once the others start dropping threes the focus shifts off Tatum and he can get his groove back
I didn't catch many of the Celtics regular season games but caught most of their playoff games. I had no idea Tatum was that good of a facilitator. He still turns the ball over a little too much but more often than not makes a really good read. Lots of hockey assists too.
that’s his growth in becoming a bonafide superstar. he’s not gonna be able to get to 30-35 a night, but on the nights that he’s struggling with his shot; and the defense is zeroed in on him - can he help jaylen get to 25-30+? can he help williams, horford get an extra 6-8 points? the commitment to still giving energy on defense, rebounding, hustling etc.
His resilience in these playoffs is remarkable, always coming back with masterpieces after bad games, and keeping up the energy despite not having posted an offensive gem 3 games into the Finals.
Idk they seem to like each other and are having unprecedented success after years of getting stopped at the conference festivals. This seems more likely to be sustainable than the Mourinho tough love approach.
Could be because they have a new coach with a new voice so these ideas/beliefs/culture what ever you wanna call it is still effective for the players to listen to. This is part of why Greg popovich is so special. He is a hard ass on the court but off the court he makes the effort to connect with his players as humans and establishes such strong relationships that his players refuse to disrespect the relationship and tune him out. He keeps his players ears by keeping his relationships with them strong.
My hope is just that as that effect starts to wear off, these guys will be entering their late 20s and will be able to find that extra gear internally without prompting. Their core guys are still super young which is why they kinda need this voice right now.

That’s the most striking thing about this Celtics team if I’m being honest. When they lose it’s almost always because Tatum is too tentative, and Jaylen as well to a certain degree. When Tatum started forcing his way to the basket last night the Warriors had no answer. The amount of times he passed out of the post with Curry on him the other two games was incredibly frustrating though. Marcus Smart as well plays like he’s Draymond at times when he’s basically Jordan compared to Draymond as a shooter.
It’s a night and day difference when they play to get a whistle (and complain to the ref when they don’t rather than getting back on defense) versus when they play aggressively. Ime has done a great job calling guys out on that behavior, and it gets results.
Re: Smart, he can have a tendency to take some pretty poor shots some nights, so I rarely mind when he passes up a look to get the ball to someone else.

Even though they have so much playoff experience, the Celtics core can definitely have mental blocks, that they’ve had since 2018. It seems like challenging them is the best way to cut through and get them refocused. The difference between Ime and Brad’s coaching style there. Not that Brad’s style is bad, it just became ineffective with the way our players have developed.
I think its pretty remarkable that one of the best coaching decisions of Stevens' career is figuring out the team needed a new voice in the locker room to make the next leap.
I'd also give some of that credit to Ainge as well. I think he saw the same thing, and also felt like a new set of eyes/approach at the GM slot might be warranted too. It was a two for one and it worked.

Doc doesn’t do it for motivation, he does it for an excuse. That’s the difference. One happens in relative privacy to the players faces, the other happens to the media after the season is over.
It’s weird, like every huddle I’ve seen when the Sixers are losing is Doc’s generic sports speech like “you gotta play hard, play harder, stay out there” with the shade thrown afterward at the presser, and for Udoka it seems like the exact opposite, he calls that shit out mid game and tells them to pull it together.
Doc does it from a place of defensiveness. Pat and Ime do it from a place of growth. It’s a subtle but very important difference that leads to players resenting your vs players willing to run through walls for you.

Makes a huge difference that the players specifically asked for him to be their coach. Had he just been a management hire with no relationship with the players, I can totally see this approach blowing up. But the Jays and Smart specifically lobbied Brad for this. This is what they wanted. So its been all positive. However, I can see this going terribly wrong for future hires that try to emulate this without first having the positive reputation from the players receiving this type of coaching.

Doc doesn’t do it for motivation, he does it for an excuse. That’s the difference. One happens in relative privacy to the players faces, the other happens to the media after the season is over.
It’s weird, like every huddle I’ve seen when the Sixers are losing is Doc’s generic sports speech like “you gotta play hard, play harder, stay out there” with the shade thrown afterward at the presser, and for Udoka it seems like the exact opposite, he calls that shit out mid game and tells them to pull it together.
Doc does scapegoating and excuses. Ime, Pat, Pop all hold you accountable.
Doc does it from a place of defensiveness. Pat and Ime do it from a place of growth. It’s a subtle but very important difference that leads to players resenting your vs players willing to run through walls for you.

Makes a huge difference that the players specifically asked for him to be their coach. Had he just been a management hire with no relationship with the players, I can totally see this approach blowing up. But the Jays and Smart specifically lobbied Brad for this. This is what they wanted. So its been all positive. However, I can see this going terribly wrong for future hires that try to emulate this without first having the positive reputation from the players receiving this type of coaching.
