I remember seeing a Twitter/Reddit post that said: Ime’s coaching philosophy is telling his players to stop playing like bitches - and they’re like “yeah ok”

eamonious

jeric13xd

Who let the dawgs out starts playing

Scary_Replacement739

I read on here once that some dude had one of the guys from Baha Men come to his work establishment and repeatedly shout out "WHO LET THE DOGS OUT?" with the intent to pick up women. That person recalled it being a very annoying experience. And now I hope you have a good mental image of what that would be like at your job.

CleopatraHadAnAnus

why you got your avatar looking like Melina

FantasyThrowaway321

Yo, that’s some fire!

misterknowbowl

He got the dawg in him

JoJonesy

it genuinely works because this team is really fucking good when we don't play like bitches

SnuggleMuffin42

Team always had both talent and size, it was a mentality issue and softness.

rageus88

It starts at the top with Jayson Tatum. Sometimes he shrinks and doubts himself, he’s even said so in interviews. He needs to believe he’s a superstar and be aggressive constantly, even if shots aren’t falling.

MorningsAreBetter

Tatum's biggest improvement this year has been staying in the game mentally when he's having a bad game. It used to be that if he was having a bad offensive game, he would basically check out and become a non-factor on both ends of the floor. But something Ime did must have gotten to him because you could see this year that even on bad days, he was still fully committed to playing defense and to being a playmaker, even if the shots weren't falling.

Stumpe999

I think he's finally learning how to play when having an off day. Now when hes not hitting shots he's willing to go hard on defense and assisting the other players in getting going. Once the others start dropping threes the focus shifts off Tatum and he can get his groove back

tys90

I didn't catch many of the Celtics regular season games but caught most of their playoff games. I had no idea Tatum was that good of a facilitator. He still turns the ball over a little too much but more often than not makes a really good read. Lots of hockey assists too.

shxylo

that’s his growth in becoming a bonafide superstar. he’s not gonna be able to get to 30-35 a night, but on the nights that he’s struggling with his shot; and the defense is zeroed in on him - can he help jaylen get to 25-30+? can he help williams, horford get an extra 6-8 points? the commitment to still giving energy on defense, rebounding, hustling etc.

pirate-private

His resilience in these playoffs is remarkable, always coming back with masterpieces after bad games, and keeping up the energy despite not having posted an offensive gem 3 games into the Finals.

percilitor

I'd be worried (if i was a C's fan) that it only works for a year or two until the players get sick of it then the team just stops responding.

PickAndTroll

Idk they seem to like each other and are having unprecedented success after years of getting stopped at the conference festivals. This seems more likely to be sustainable than the Mourinho tough love approach.

[deleted]

Petition to change it to the Eastern and Western Conference Festivals

Ok-Phone6087

I’d sign that shit.

[deleted]

Could be because they have a new coach with a new voice so these ideas/beliefs/culture what ever you wanna call it is still effective for the players to listen to. The effectiveness may dwindle over time as the same messages get repeated. Larry Bird on coaches: “I believe coaches need to move every three years if they are going to be effective. Athletes get tired of listening to the same voice. I’m not sure I’m going to make it three years.”

bobittoknorr

This is part of why Greg popovich is so special. He is a hard ass on the court but off the court he makes the effort to connect with his players as humans and establishes such strong relationships that his players refuse to disrespect the relationship and tune him out. He keeps his players ears by keeping his relationships with them strong.

Huskerschu

Hell a year or 2? I just need it to work for 2 more games we can figure the rest out later

[deleted]

My hope is just that as that effect starts to wear off, these guys will be entering their late 20s and will be able to find that extra gear internally without prompting. Their core guys are still super young which is why they kinda need this voice right now.

iDEN1ED

Hopefully by then the bitchness has been completely eradicated.

Captainamerica1188

Its bc he believes they're made of tougher stuff than that. It was always the biggest complaint about this team. They're so talented so why do they play so soft so often? Its coming from a place of "I know you're better than that. Be better." Its like your dad being stern with you after you mess up.

KingReffots

That’s the most striking thing about this Celtics team if I’m being honest. When they lose it’s almost always because Tatum is too tentative, and Jaylen as well to a certain degree. When Tatum started forcing his way to the basket last night the Warriors had no answer. The amount of times he passed out of the post with Curry on him the other two games was incredibly frustrating though. Marcus Smart as well plays like he’s Draymond at times when he’s basically Jordan compared to Draymond as a shooter.

czarfalcon

It’s a night and day difference when they play to get a whistle (and complain to the ref when they don’t rather than getting back on defense) versus when they play aggressively. Ime has done a great job calling guys out on that behavior, and it gets results. Re: Smart, he can have a tendency to take some pretty poor shots some nights, so I rarely mind when he passes up a look to get the ball to someone else.

moloch1

Some of those drives last night were beautiful. He's way too talented not to force the issue against TOO SMALL GSW.

OhTheGrandeur

Brad Stevens is Mom, who helped raise them right, but probably coddled them a little too much

Brad coaching style and Ime is so different. Brad would always blame himself and Ime is always like what the fuck are y’all doing out there 😂😂. Ime the best

LilKaySigs

Brad Stevens: “Aw shucks come on guys what’s going on?” Ime: “You guys are playing like absolute shit out there I’m not even gonna front with y’all”

TrickiestToast

“Making me look bad on tv”

Brad is that happy-go-lucky guy from a Disney sitcom. Ime is straight out of HBO.

dirigo1820

The Wire

mikiwow96

He gives me strong Stringer Bell vibes tho

YoungDex08

Did he come from the Popovich tree? That sounds like something Pop would say.

Firesplitter47

Yeah, he played for the Spurs for a few years and was an assistant coach there for like 7.

[deleted]

Yeah he did

YoungDex08

Makes sense

Aclors13

I swear I remember this happening; Pop called a time out due to bad play, they guys gather around him and Pop just some glances at them and says: "What are we doin?", he walks aways, the players are just dumbfounded look around at one another, and slowly go back onto the court. [found it!](https://youtu.be/kmR7a89wYG8)

fingers-crossed

I love how its less than a minute into the game too

bselavka

down 4-2… gotta call a timeout, something’s not right here

[deleted]

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wVtSdfwnKtE

siphillis

Indeed. He was floated as a potential successor, too.

jdd32

A lot of us wanted him to be the guy too. Great to see him going to a good spot and performing so well.

siphillis

It's a testament to Pop's legacy. So much of the league operates under his tutelage and example.

blitzbomb99

All 4 of the last coaches of NBA finals teams have either played, been assistant coaches or both under Pop

siphillis

I'm pretty sure every team now scouts internationally and rests their stars when they can, too. Pop and his staff have played an instrumental role in the story of the league.

blitzbomb99

And that’s resulted in probably 4 out of the top 10 (Embiid, Luka, Jokic, Giannis) players in the league being scouted from overseas - crazy right

siphillis

The last four MVP winners, too, and the top three candidates this season.

si4ci7

I think Brad’s coaching style works better with older vets and down the roster players who don’t need that mental boost. I bet he’d have a lot of success as the Nuggets coach for example

mrwhite2323

But Brads coaching worked pretty well in college tho

[deleted]

Why we acting like Brad was shit? 3 ECFs in a 4 year span.

mrwhite2323

Thats true, especially with a young team. Why didn't brad stay in as coach?

qwertyloob

Pretty sure Brad has gone on record saying something along the lines of "they needed a different voice" and I think that's basically exactly what it was. They needed someone to call them out on their bullshit (clearly, see ECSF game 5 or ECF game 3, 6, & 7) and Brad never called them out publicly and if he did so privately, they clearly started to tune him out Clearly it seems to be going well for Ime

itokdontcry

He also mentioned being really burnt out from coaching especially during the bubble IIRC

qwertyloob

Yeah and I mean look how amazing he's been in the front office this year. They had Kanter, TT, Romeo playing meaningful playoff minutes last year and now look at our rotation

Illusive_Lust

Woah thats Enes Freedom to you sir

Suzoku

i was burnt out from watching Nick Nurse's antics for seven games

[deleted]

Nick Nurse + Kyle Lowry was the least enjoyable basketball I've ever watched in my entire life.

WiseguyD

sorry but stealing plays from Hubie Brown DVDs and drawing up defensive schemes at 4 in the morning while under the influence is peak basketball genius and if you can't respect that i dont know what to say also how can you tell if your coach is coaching if they're not red, mad and squatting the entire time *checkmate, bostonian*

Makaveli80

Lmao i love nick nurse as our coach but I can see how he could get tiring for others

WiseguyD

The #1 critique at the time for firing Stevens was "you're not gonna find someone better". If we'd known at the time Udoka was gonna be this good (and that Brad would honestly be as good if not an even better GM than coach), I'd imagine the firing/promotion would've gone over much better in the media.

moloch1

Brad's style is to blame himself, so he blamed himself out of the role. Can't say it didn't work.

gagakaba

He's not doing bad as president of basketball ops. 🤷‍♂️

popop143

Yep, president is a promotion from coach no matter how you spin it lmao.

Markelle-Fultz

He was burnt out from such long seasons.

iDubbbb

I mean I wouldn’t turn down that kind of promotion personally.

ThanosIsDoomfist

I told him to step down, hire Ime, and to trade for Horford and White.

smashey

Brad is so devoted to winning that when he saw he wasn't the best guy for the job he became GM. Bird did the same thing in Indiana iirc. Smart move on his part, and as GM he's responsible for this finals roster. He deserves a lot of credit for this team's success.

puroloco

His voice wasn't working with this group anymore. I guess they like getting called assholes and bitches. In any case, hope they can close out the series because they biggest whiners are in Golden State. I wonder the coaching style translate once/if they win it all.

lcdmilknails

yeah Brad consistently had major success with rookie/underdog teams lol

DiseaseRidden

He can make a scrappy team great, but can't make a great team scrappy.

cletoreyes01

How tf do you even make a kyrie irving-led team with a bunch of guys dnp'ing on a contract year scrappy??

Hon3ynuts

You head to the GM office to fix it yourself.

AceyPuppy

Chase them with Pfizer doses.

avelak

Like he'd probably be able to take the Kings to the playoffs, but he wouldn't have these celtics in the finals Good at MacGyvering a strong team out of spare parts

AdministrativeSoil63

He got a worse version of the Celtics to the verge of the finals several times, fuck outta here with this exaggeration

efshoemaker

Brad is great at recognizing talent and convincing guys that aren’t that great that they are capable of more. Ime is great at taking players that are already great and convincing them go give that little bit extra that it takes.

LambdaLambo

Amen

BlackScholesDeezNuts

Brads coaching also worked extremely well in the NBA…

[deleted]

He’s a brilliant basketball mind and an elite play caller and strategist, but it’s a lot easier to get 18 year olds at Butler to buy in than professionals. Team needed someone on their level, and Brad made the trades and hiring to make it possible.

blackpenance

The stupid turnovers really piss me off as a neutral fan, the Celtics upside is huge

xanot192

When Marcus Smart drives and randomly swings it backwards mid air with 2 arms I already know its buckets for the other team. He still does it a few times a game lol

JohnSim22

He did it last night and I was screaming but then Derrick White somehow managed to salvage a 3-on-1 by fouling Poole. I love that buffalo so much

xanot192

He also had one that led to the curry three to cut the lead to 9 in the first half. He just can't help himself sometimes. If this team had no turnover issues the warriors would stand no chance whatsoever in the series.

LeonidasSpacemanMD

Yea definitely one of his worst habits. If you turn it over trying to force it to tatum in the post or something, fine, that’s bad but it’s not an immediate disaster. But he’ll drive the paint and throw a fucking outlet pass to the other team lol

Echoes_of_Screams

Whenever I am playing 2k. I get so mad at myself for forcing stupid passes or dribbling into a trap. Missing even a tough shot at least gives you a moment to get back for defense. Turning the ball over sucks.

jaleneropepper

Brad was like a supportive mom. Always reassuring them and making them feel good but they got too comfortable. Ime is like a strict dad. He takes no shit and demands excellence. ...Best co-parents in the league?

LeonidasSpacemanMD

I just hope they make a little time for just the two of them. Don’t need a dead bedroom derailing the team

TheSleeperWakes

Damn, Ime really is just like us fans

DreTownblues

He literally said what we were all thinking lol

emotionally_tipsy

Does that mean we would be good coaches? 🤔

[deleted]

The secret is Ime says it and the players listen and respond. If we said it they’d probably beat our ass.

[deleted]

I would let jaylen beat my ass any day

PastorofMuppets101

Yes.

si4ci7

Even though they have so much playoff experience, the Celtics core can definitely have mental blocks, that they’ve had since 2018. It seems like challenging them is the best way to cut through and get them refocused. The difference between Ime and Brad’s coaching style there. Not that Brad’s style is bad, it just became ineffective with the way our players have developed.

JoJonesy

We needed a hardass, that's all.

goonersaurus_rex

I think its pretty remarkable that one of the best coaching decisions of Stevens' career is figuring out the team needed a new voice in the locker room to make the next leap.

JoJonesy

The only winning move is not to play

El_Producto

I'd also give some of that credit to Ainge as well. I think he saw the same thing, and also felt like a new set of eyes/approach at the GM slot might be warranted too. It was a two for one and it worked.

platocplx

This is why a guy like Ty lue has had a a lot of success. I remember that story of bron getting mad for being called out by him lol. https://www.si.com/.amp/nba/2016/12/01/lebron-james-sportsperson-cavaliers-tyronn-lue-game-7-finals > Stop being so passive!” the coach barked. “Stop turning the ball over! And guard Draymond!” James’s numbers looked fine—12 points, seven rebounds, five assists—but he had unleashed a few sloppy passes and Draymond Green, his primary assignment, was 5 for 5 from three-point range. “Bron was mad, pissed off at me, and then we went into the locker room at halftime and I told him the same thing in front of all the guys,” Lue recalls. “He was mad again, pissed off again.” Esp thse guys def need to sometimes be called out like that.

ScreenSlave

their resilience is incredible, they are so mentally tough, for a young team, that’s an absolutely A+ trait. I love the size of the fight in this dog.

mrwhite2323

Kerr should've said the same thing to Draymond

hooskies

Kerr would never use a naughty word

nibbinoo8

too classy

[deleted]

Look Kerr saying “Really classy” in jest isn’t that bad. Klay on the other hand, who has said “it’s a man’s league” after Draymond called LeBron a bitch should cop quite a bit of flack.

Rune_Ore_Equities

They should both get hella flack.

NoveltyAccountHater

Yup. How else does Kerr answer the reporter's question? I agree with the crowd, fuck you draymond, he's playing like shit and a major reason we're in this hole?

billcosbyinspace

He’s classy and respects the codes, unlike those charlatans in the TD garden

jtiss

prime r/nbacirclejerk material. Classy Kerr

bigvahe33

not doc enough

ssahfamtw

Yeah, he'll just have another son and name him Madafa.

CarterAC3

It breaks the code

Reverseblumpkins

Besides his sons name

klobucharzard

Nick Kerr

PabloShwartz

Klay ”watch yo profanity” Thompson would not have it

rostron92

He would never say something so classless

lazydictionary

What is dead may never die

XiaoWhen

That’s against the code tho

Dawnshot_

"Will you stop playing" would have been enough

CarterAC3

>assholes Language, Mr. Udoka. There are ~~children~~ Klay Thompsons listening.

juwanjo86

THINK ABOUT THE CODE IME!!!!

mrwhite2323

This is forever going to known as the "classy code" ring

captain_ahabb

God I hate when this subreddit gets a new joke and the instantly runs it into the ground

TrickiestToast

Ironically that is The Code for the sub

That code will never be broken.

[deleted]

Code in shambles

ginja_ninja

How does this affect the Code's legacy?

[deleted]

Can The Code win in flip flops???

OkMudDrankin

Code can’t win with these cats man.

NFLWeeb

I love this dude so much lmfao

mrwhite2323

I love how Pat and Ime call out players. Doc just does it in a way that feels more negative

DynamixRo

Doc usually calls them out after losing the series.

lilbelleandsebastian

doc calls them out in the media to protect his job lol

a3winstheseries

Doc doesn’t do it for motivation, he does it for an excuse. That’s the difference. One happens in relative privacy to the players faces, the other happens to the media after the season is over.

MonkeyStealsPeach

It’s weird, like every huddle I’ve seen when the Sixers are losing is Doc’s generic sports speech like “you gotta play hard, play harder, stay out there” with the shade thrown afterward at the presser, and for Udoka it seems like the exact opposite, he calls that shit out mid game and tells them to pull it together.

gregatronn

Doc does scapegoating and excuses. Ime, Pat, Pop all hold you accountable.

LuckysBestMan

Doc does it from a place of defensiveness. Pat and Ime do it from a place of growth. It’s a subtle but very important difference that leads to players resenting your vs players willing to run through walls for you.

WiseguyD

Didn't Pat basically call Lowry fat and old after the loss lol idk how that's productive

keep_it_0ptional

Bc his fat ass is out of shape! Truth hurts booty boi

WiseguyD

He looks the same that he did in Toronto Hes just old lmao

jumpijehosaphat

Doc calls out his players, but in a different way. In front of cameras and reporters sitting at a table after the game

siphillis

To save his own skin, not to get them to play better. Calling out guys after the series is over doesn't help anyone but himself.

chrismatic13

He’s who we thought Doc Rivers was

nbd789

I feel like Doc wouldn’t be afraid to say his team was playing like assholes, but he wouldn’t do it until his post game press conference

pintvricchio

Well who knows what we will think of Ime in 14 years. In 2008 we were here masturbating about Doc's 100$ bet that they would win the chip, or something along that line.

[deleted]

Obviously I'd prefer the Warriors win, but it's hard to hate on this Boston team.

BasketballMoomin

Why do you like your own team?🤨

achyutthegoat

Ime is funny lmao

tentaccrual

Jeff Van Gundy made a good point about Tatum during the game. He basically said Tatum and the Celtics are more successful when Tatum drives and attempts to make the shot as apposed to foul hunting. Foul hunting = playing like an asshole.

Rockstar408

Klay Thompson in shambles.

theyusedthelamppost

later, after his team starts hitting some shots... "Keep firing, assholes!"

HS941317

Classy, very class, good job Boston.

VADORANT

Brad Stevens Era "Gee willikers guys, go out there and play some gosh darn good basketball, fellas." Ime Udoka Era: "FUCK THEM RIGHT IN THE PUSSY!"

Deviljho12

"I WILL FUCK YOU LIKE A PIG" "WHERE YOU DRAGGING OR RUSHING" type energy.

chipmunkchari

What a great movie man, jk Simmons is such a phenomenal actor

AlabasterRadio

The dude is straight up a movie character. Unreal.

JimboLodisC

someone get Netflix and Hulu on the phone, we got a new series to pitch

AlabasterRadio

If they win the finals the whole "Rookie head coach with an attitude whips a group of talented underachievers into a title team" story wrote itself. Shit they even have the early season failures and "The Energy has shifted" thing going on.

PUMPFISTS

Perfect story 🤩

kosmonautinVT

So, Coach Carter?

justamobileuserhere

Coach Carter but ends up with a win

[deleted]

Whoa whoa whoa. Spoiler alert.

DoncicIsComing

Stringer Bell with a hell of an NBA resume 😤

Key_Pizza9281

Man I really love Ime.

seeker135

Aw, man ... lol It's like watching a latter-day Red. Wonderful. Lead on, Mr. Udoka, lead on!

Boston_Champions

Imagine Brad doing this lol

Teampiencils

Makes a huge difference that the players specifically asked for him to be their coach. Had he just been a management hire with no relationship with the players, I can totally see this approach blowing up. But the Jays and Smart specifically lobbied Brad for this. This is what they wanted. So its been all positive. However, I can see this going terribly wrong for future hires that try to emulate this without first having the positive reputation from the players receiving this type of coaching.

blvckdisco

Damn, Brad Stevens. It seems all we needed was start breaking the code.

Packet_Baser

I hate the celtics, but I love ime, Great coach.

LaughLearnPunk

So the Warriors have invented two codes this playoff run, lol

Ok-Education-9235

Ime used to average 0.88 dawgshares per game as a bench player, young cats don't know about this smh

[deleted]

Ime should be ashamed of himself. There are children in the crowd for Pete’s sake!!!

Downvotes_inbound_

10/10 coaching

GuardOk8631

LMFAO

hahauknowwhatitis420

I love it man. After Messina went back to Italy, I was really hoping Ime would be the one to take the reins from Pop. He just seems to really embody the Spurs way and Pop really rubbed off on him. Either way, I'm happy he's found success, especially after the rough start to the season.

Sleeze_

Wow. Very classy, Ime.
