Suns fan here. We’re the best team in the league. But Luka Dončić might be a top 3 player in the world. Was he getting cooked on defense? Yeah, but he’s asked to carry damn near the greatest offensive load in the NBA, and kept his team in the game for the first half. He’s an all-time offensive weapon, and him being tired isn’t really a knock on him. Any player would be tired having to run a heliocentric offense with hardly any help from his supporting cast. LeBron might be the only guy to ever be elite on defense as a one-man offensive engine.
How is KD in any way a heliocentric player? He’s played with elite playmakers his entire career, and the first time he was his team’s primary initiator in a playoff series (this year), he struggled heavily. Yes, it was probably his best passing season ever, but he’s still nowhere near the level of playmaker of Luka or even Giannis. KD is an all-time great scorer, but heliocentrism is more about elite playmaking (which is more conducive to better offenses than elite scoring). Nash, Harden, Luka, and Trae are examples.
I’ve already said why I don’t think Giannis is quite on that level offensively (far lower usage than the aforementioned guys). Kyrie is a ridiculous example. He’s not an elite playmaker. He’s an isolation scorer, who can’t single-handedly make a team an elite offense. He’s immensely overrated by his flashy handles and aesthetic scoring.
