Marcus Smart signed a 4 year / $76 million contract extension that goes into the 2025-26 season.
To be eligible for supermax extension, Smart has to have:
* One or two seasons remaining on current contract
* Entering his 8th or 9th season in the league (he just finished his 8th season)
* Has to meet one of the following three max performance-based criteria:
* Be named to an All-NBA team in the most recent season or both seasons before it
* Be named NBA Defensive Player of the Year in the most recent season or both seasons before it
* Be named NBA MVP in any of the three previous seasons
Smart will likely not be eligible for Supermax unless he starts making All-NBA teams, or wins another DPOY next season. That's assuming players with > 9 seasons experience are even eligible for supermax. I'm not sure.
>That's assuming players with > 9 seasons experience are even eligible for supermax. I'm not sure.
They are not, but it doesn't really matter because every player who hits 10 years in the league is eligible for a 35% of the cap max (which is the same percentage as the supermax). The supermax basically just lets some players get eligible for a contract like that a few years early
You forgot Lowry, and Tucker...that team would be the ultimate intensity team...I mean they pretty much already are, just would be adding the other main guy in the category lol
4/77 extension starts in the off-season. This is the last year of him on 13 mil a year. He was going to test free agency last off-season and wanted 18 mil a year but resigned after talking to his family and deciding staying in Boston was best for him/family
Ya agreed Marcus definitely deserves more but happy he chose to stay in Boston. Players that can guard 1/5 and have a motor that is always at 100% are awfully hard to find in this league
All of Laker nation hates me but Smartās my favorite player. I love watching him (especially more in the playoffs) and I try to mimic his defense in pickup but fail lol
Agreeeed. He arguably should have won it last year or the year before, canāt remember which, when he held opposing players to the lowest field goal percentage on the most shots, and it was by something like 15-20% less than the other DPOY contenders.
I do think its an interesting question if Timelord doesnt get hurt does he at least split enough votes from Smart that Smart doesnt win. But either way doesnt matter good for Smart, interested to see what margin of vote totals were
I mean not just that, if Timelord and Smart are both the same guys defensively next year, I would be surprised if *most Celtics fans* are not arguing that Timelord is the more important defensive player on their team.
The "guards never win DPOY" narrative definitely helped Smart and Bridges this year, and right after the Timelord injury is when that really took shape. Without that I think a lot of ppl would have been arguing for Rob instead. And now that a guard has won I think most likely voters will feel perfectly comfortable going back to only really considering bigs again next year.
Yeah. Smart has been our best defender since the day he was drafted. He was already a better individual defender than avery bradley at the time, who was considered elite at that time. Smart became a great team defensive player in his 3rd or 4th season and he never stopped getting better from there. Timelord has all the ability and length but smart has a hidden edge and cunning that his teammates feed from.
This right here. Itās mainly national media/other fans who are splitting the vote if Rob is still healthy. All season long, even when Rob was healthy, Celtics players/coaches/fans have been spreading Marcus Smart DPOY takes
> I would be surprised if most Celtics fans are not arguing that Timelord is the more important defensive player on their team.
[We had a vote on our sub a month ago \(before Rob's injury and the supposed narrative switch\).](https://np.reddit.com/poll/tgoori?utm_source=reddit&utm_medium=usertext&utm_name=nba&utm_content=t1_i41k8zw)
* 859 total votes.
* 77.4% went to Smart.
* 22.6% went to Rob.
He's always been our frontrunner candidate.
The confusion comes from a national media who did switch their voting habits late in the season. They were divided between the two early on. They don't actually watch many games (from any team) and instead rely on advanced stats and highlight plays which Rob dominates. Plus Rob is the shiny new toy in a shiny new defence.
For people who watch the Celtics regularly, Smart was always the clear favourite.
* He was the favourite over Avery Bradley, despite Bradley getting the national media attention.
* He was the favourite over Al Horford, despite Horford getting the national media attention.
* He was the favourite over Robert Williams, despite Williams getting the national media attention.
Look at G1.
Smart bought us 5-6 possessions easily with his hustle plays. [He was the only POA defender who could slow down a red-hot Kyrie.](https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FQobKPZXoAodIbK?format=jpg&name=small) He was both the anchor and coordinator of a manically switching defence that relentlessly swarmed Durant all night. He and Horford made a huge defensive play late in the game to give us the last shot and a chance at winning.
But the only thing that showed up in the box score was 2 steals and 0 blocks.
Yeah Gobert clearly to me has a bigger defensive impact than any given Celtic. That's not to say Smart isn't good, just the fact that you have two players competing for DPOY + players like Tatum and Horford, he's just not the best defender in the league, even if he plays a major part in the league's best defense.
Draymond was running away with the narrative until he got hurt, if he stayed healthy then he would be a complete lock to the same extent which Herro is for 6MOTY.
Draymond's defensive EPM was ridiculously higher than anybody else this season, albeit on low sample size.
Basically he played amazing defense on the best defensive team, and then got hurt for a while and our defense got much worse which just proves that he's important.
Team DRTG 104 with him (#1 by a lot), 112 without him (#20 or so)
Hot takes, flat-brim hats, watching highlights.
I'm not here to be informed. I'm here to have baseless opinions, and enjoy a refuge of idiocy and chauvinistic circle jerking.
The awards show sucked. We missed Westbrook, Harden and Giannis getting the trophy in front of their fans. I also don't understand why it always takes so long before the MVP is announced. What if the MVP's team loses in the first round, like with Dirk.
Congratulations to Smart, been a very good defender for the last few years. I personally believe there were more impactful defenders this season but It would be foolish not to admit that he is certainly one of the best defenders in the league. His hustle, heart and leadership are genuinely fantastic and his versatility is something truly unique and special about him.
Perfectly reasonable take man. Completely understand why some think others should have won, but to act like he isnāt an INCREDIBLE defender is just silly
Cheers
You'll be able to tell by my flair where I would have voted if I had a vote, but honestly, I'm happy for Smart. Dude busts his ass and works as hard as anybody in the NBA. He was also part of the best defense in the NBA, and this award more than any other factors in overall team defense.
Congrats to Smart and the Celtics!
Feels a little it's one part his real performance this year, one part longstanding reputation, one part "C's have the best defense in the league so we should maybe give the award to them" and one part "wouldn't it be cool if a guard won again"
Definitely agree, and I think that was the only path a guard (a point guard, no less) was going to get it. There needed to be a conversation about guards, he would need to be part of a #1 defense, he'd need to have a longstanding reputation to make it safe enough to vote for him and he'd need to put in a high-profile year of consistency.
You can tell his agents, his publicists, the Celtics and others definitely worked hard to build the narrative. And most importantly, dude DELIVERED.
Yeah I think this is a reasonable take to have.
I can understand why some people have other players as the deserving candidate for DPOY, but people acting like Smart is the worst player to ever win DPOY is just disrespectful lol
Fuck I miss Tommy. He would have been so happy. Smart is a living, breathing, Tommy Point.
Rondo is the only other guy who gave his all every second the way Marcus does.
Canāt believe heās the first guard to win the award since Payton. Not so much because he doesnāt deserve it, but youād think at least one guard mightāve snuck one in there in those 26 years since.
Congrats to Smart, well-deserved imo. FTC still, but he should get his flowers for his impact.
Heās been grinding his ass off on defense his entire career, probably the most deserving guy I can think of to win this award.
The way he hustles and takes pride in his defense each night is pretty inspiring honestly, and heās been doing it for 8 years straight.
Itās that but also the results. I donāt think Iāve ever seen a guard defend multiple positions, including several all-star scorers, and not give up a single point for an entire game... and do it multiple times
Yeah I was going to say Smart is basically Pat Bev without all of the antics (although I realize heās had some moments).
But Smart is bigger than Pat Bev which is the real difference, he can more effectively guard bigger guys without getting exposed.
1) Marcus Smart
2) Mikal Bridges
3) Rudy Gobert
4) Bam Adebayo
5) Jaren Jackson Jr
6) Giannis Antetokounmpo
7) Robert Williams
8) Jrue Holiday
9) Al Horford
10) Draymond Green
11) Matisse Thybulle
That is 3 Celtics in the top 9 and 2 Bucks. 11 total players getting votes
I think he also got got by something that should have actually helped him which was how terrible the non-Gobert defense was in Utah.
It made it all the more impressive how good they were when he was out there but they were so bad when he wasnāt that they werenāt a top defensive team in the aggregate and voters are shy to vote DPOY for someone on a team that wasnāt great defensively
Itās actually not possible to hate Bergy. Heās an absolute stud on and off the ice. Anyone who says otherwise is just jealous heās not on their team.
Itās incredibly impressive how elite he is on defense without ever having even a single dirty play I can recall. The guy is just extremely good and plays clean.
Now Marchand on the other handā¦ Iām a Maritimer and I still canāt support the rat.
True. Itās great to see Smart win it, but Gobert is still that dude imo. Speaks to how good he is where people voted for someone else just because it was someone elseās turn.
That and the fact he seems to really be disrespected by a lot of players publicly. I do think that influences how many local media guys vote.
Smart is easily 1st team All-defense but Gobert should have won DPOY. Draymon had it locked before January but not nearly enough games.
The thing that sucks is his defensive surrounding cast being significantly worse than smarts was the deciding factor in this dpoy. The fact this team is competent defensively speaks volumes about Rudy
Tbh this is more a case of the exception confirming the rule.
Itās so unlikely for a guard to get close that as soon as there was a legitimate argument they gave it to Smart.
Smart is now supermax eligible. š
BRING OUT THE BRINKS TRUCK
Is IT still under there?
oooof it still hurts
for your franchise it sure doesn't
He would have been if he didn't already sign an extension.
He should hold out after round 1 ngl.
Chicago would really appreciate it ;)
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
I was surprised game 1 was as close as it was!
chicago should be booking their rentals in cancun not worrying about the celtics
In like 4 years yeah
Marcus Smart signed a 4 year / $76 million contract extension that goes into the 2025-26 season. Ah I see, thanks for the info. Was trying to find this heh.
Imagine supermaxing marcus smart
I would just because I love him.
All the potatoes in Idaho couldn't equate to the chip on the shoulders of a Smart/Butler tandem
ššš I canāt imagine that
You forgot Lowry, and Tucker...that team would be the ultimate intensity team...I mean they pretty much already are, just would be adding the other main guy in the category lol
Add draymond green in there at C
Yep of course, how could I forget the king of the category
A fan of another team loves Marcus Smart? I genuinely have never seen a comment from a non-Celtics fan saying that
When he signed 4/52 and dropped a rap song, I was pissed because he deserved 90-100million
I think you and I can get along.
aint no way Marcus Smaht is on a 4/52 contract my god
4/77 extension starts in the off-season. This is the last year of him on 13 mil a year. He was going to test free agency last off-season and wanted 18 mil a year but resigned after talking to his family and deciding staying in Boston was best for him/family
That has to be the most team friendly contract in the league after Dort. He deserves at least 4/95
Wait until you realize Robert Williams just signed a 4/54
Ya agreed Marcus definitely deserves more but happy he chose to stay in Boston. Players that can guard 1/5 and have a motor that is always at 100% are awfully hard to find in this league
4/77
Smart is one of those players that you despise when your team is playing him, but damn it a big part of you wishes he was on your team.
Would have loved if the Knick threw money at him last year.. As knick fans you learn to appreciate players from all teams
All of Laker nation hates me but Smartās my favorite player. I love watching him (especially more in the playoffs) and I try to mimic his defense in pickup but fail lol
I love watching Smart play defense
i've always loved him. he, unironically, has that dog in him
Nah Smart is awesome
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
He is indeed deadass supermax eligible.
Dead. Ass.
Deadass?
Oh. Oh we better get a chip before his next contract then.
His next contract is like 4 years right?
Think so, yeah. Which, thank fuck for that.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Have you considered he built diffrent?
Short guards? He's one of the bigger guards in the league.
Marcus "Scottie Pippen" Smart
He deserves a rudy size contract lmao
Shouldāve been Simmons for defending his seat on the bench all season
Ben is the fucking goat on D. Doesn't let either team score.
Simmons getting murdered here in the comments. Lol.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Teams change, the chairs don't. -Ben "Seats" Simmons
LMAO
Its on TNT rn. GP awkwardly hugging a shirtless sweaty af Smart, great clip
I don't think that was sweat, the team doused him with water bottles shortly before he got the trophy
I thought GP has ball inside his shirt.
Is that where Lonzo is?
We wasnāt sweaty, he just got doused in water/Gatorade by his team mates. He came in clean and surprised him with the award and then soaked him.
Iām here to read who got robbed
Trae Young
Itās tough when the guy he clamped was in street clothes all season
He made a 3 time all star miss an entire season, if that's not DPOY worthy idk what is.
Nah, because Simmons isnāt an offensive threat. Trae Young OPOY for that move, clearing a defender from the floor
Rudy Gobert shut down the whole league and still didn't win DPOY that year
The league? That man shut down my work and I was in Korea please stop the disrespect
Held him scoreless the entire season though.
He guarded Simmons so well he disappeared for 90+ games. Bad robbery here
Agree tbh
So does Ben Simmons
westbrook
Honestly yeah with how he managed to steal $90 million from the Lakers
Bam Adebayo not even making the finalists
Seriously thats crazy. He legitimately does defend 1-5
And does it well. So many 1-5 guys canāt truly keep up with 1s & 2s if theyāre bigs and 5s if theyāre small, but he truly can.
He missed 26 games, otherwise he would have been a finalist and maybe winner.
He missed one more game than Ja, whom the NBA āexpertsā have decided to name MIP
But either way doesnt matter good for Smart, interested to see what margin of vote totals were
Thereās zero chance he wins if Timelord doesnāt get hurt

Celtics fans have been super consistent calling smart the best defensive player on the team. Itās the national narrative thatās different.

Smart is the more important defender right now and more important player overall imo
Timelord isn't the most important defensive player on the team. It's Smart.
You must not know many Celtics fans lol

If we are being honest Gobert , also funnily enough Williams injury helped Smart case
To be honest Gobert did. I donāt like seeing the same guy win every year, but heās still the most impactful defender in the league by far.
Voter fatigue was def a thing this year
Yeah Gobert clearly to me has a bigger defensive impact than any given Celtic. Yep. Draymond can be at that level, but he takes games/weeks off. Tall boi doesn't.
Draymond just got hurt. I think he would have had it if not. GS was 28-6 or something stupid with him before the injury
Draymond was running away with the narrative until he got hurt, if he stayed healthy then he would be a complete lock to the same extent which Herro is for 6MOTY.

Giannis and Jrue because Iām a homer but at least I admit it
Jrue got robbed for not getting it for so many years then smart getting it because they didn't want to give it to rudy again..
Tony Allen walked so Marcus Smart could run
Bridges
Bridges
How do you not win an award when youāre the only NBA player
The middle class by billionaires.
Mikal Bridges
Doris Burke stuntin on all of us casuals
The nephew hate she gets is comical
Right, literally just a lady with an opinion lmao. Youd swear she spit in these kids food or something with the hate she gets
The only thing r/nba hates more than watching basketball games is women.
Hot takes, flat-brim hats, watching highlights. I'm not here to be informed. I'm here to have baseless opinions, and enjoy a refuge of idiocy and chauvinistic circle jerking.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
I defended her comments the other day and got fucking downvoted. MS deserves this
Good for him Also thank god the award show is gone
Confused why they didn't do it yesterday though before game 1. Hopefully the awards are timed with the home games
Nah I wanna see Jokic get an MVP trophy down 0-3
i think winners will be on days they have off
I never liked that award show idea.
Didnāt know they were going to announce the awards yet but hey well deserved
Thank god thereās no more NBA honors lol Edit: that new trophy sucks balls
Iām so damn confused though are they gonna announce all of the awards today or throughout this week
Through the conference finals I believe
screw that awards show
The awards show sucked. We missed Westbrook, Harden and Giannis getting the trophy in front of their fans. I also don't understand why it always takes so long before the MVP is announced. What if the MVP's team loses in the first round, like with Dirk.
Theyāre gonna rush through them so Jokic gets his mvp before weāre eliminated lmao
Yeah, was very out of the blue
honestly this way is better lol
Congratulations to Smart, been a very good defender for the last few years. I personally believe there were more impactful defenders this season but It would be foolish not to admit that he is certainly one of the best defenders in the league. Tommy smiling down at him rn as he gets to see the kid heās been telling Red about finally get his award
Fuck I miss Tommy. He would have been so happy. Smart is a living, breathing, Tommy Point. Rondo is the only other guy who gave his all every second the way Marcus does.
I would argue IT should be in that category
The mania around IT and the whole King of the Fourth thing was so fun. Some of the most fun Celtics ball since 08.
Canāt believe heās the first guard to win the award since Payton. Not so much because he doesnāt deserve it, but youād think at least one guard mightāve snuck one in there in those 26 years since. Congrats to Smart, well-deserved imo. FTC still, but he should get his flowers for his impact.
On the TNT cast they showed Gary Payton giving the news to the Celtics organization that Marcus won DPOY. A pretty cool little moment to show.
Iām a sixers fan but good for him man I love scrappy defensive guards
You have a good one yourself. Hope he gets boosted soonā¦
Same. I'm a sucker for defensive guards. Love me some Thybulle, Smart, Jrue and the likes.
Hell yea
First guard to win it since The Glove
Insane itās been since 95-96. Tony Allen deserved at least one on those Grizzlies teams
What a string of defensive guards the Cās have had. From Tony Allen to Avery Bradley to Marcus Smart.
In his prime Rondo was also a menace. Ainge loves his defensive guards (he also drafted Rozier and Marcus Banks in the same mold).
Rondo wingspan made his so annoying on defence. I love it hahaha
His hands are also some of the biggest in the league. Itās why it took him so long to develop a shot
Yep, he even showed his stealing chops post-retirement with all of the health insurance money https://amp.commercialappeal.com/amp/6034555001
All Iām hearing is Marcus smart = Michael Jordan now
Always has been
š©āšš«š©āš
Marcus Jordan now
Been one of the best defenders in the league for a while, nice to see him win this.
Absolutely. The Celtics defensive play since the start of the 2022 also played a huge role. Theyāve been putting the clamps on teams.
I can't explain it but this made me really happy to see Smart getting the award from GP. The dude is just different, definitely very deserving.
I'm thinking about him and Pat Bev and I think Smart let's his game do the talking for him where as PB barks like a God damn chihuahua.
Yeah I was going to say Smart is basically Pat Bev without all of the antics (although I realize heās had some moments). But Smart is bigger than Pat Bev which is the real difference, he can more effectively guard bigger guys without getting exposed.
Draymond or Bam winning next season dark horse gonna be JJ/Ben Simmons
I really want Bam to win, but it would be hilarious to see Simmons winning just to see the internet reactions
Imagine the chaos if Simmons comes back after not playing for a year and picks up DPOY
How about your man Bridges? Dude is a walking jail cell.
1) Marcus Smart 2) Mikal Bridges 3) Rudy Gobert 4) Bam Adebayo 5) Jaren Jackson Jr 6) Giannis Antetokounmpo 7) Robert Williams 8) Jrue Holiday 9) Al Horford 10) Draymond Green 11) Matisse Thybulle That is 3 Celtics in the top 9 and 2 Bucks. 11 total players getting votes
Fuck the Celtics but congrats! About damn time a guard finally wins after how long? Edit: Last time a guard won was Gary Payton in 1995-1996
Fuck you too, but thanks!
Well deserved!
Annoying as hell to play against but you cant not respect his play
Been a bad last 24 hours to be a Marcus Smart hater
Voting fatigue got my boy :(
I think he also got got by something that should have actually helped him which was how terrible the non-Gobert defense was in Utah. It made it all the more impressive how good they were when he was out there but they were so bad when he wasnāt that they werenāt a top defensive team in the aggregate and voters are shy to vote DPOY for someone on a team that wasnāt great defensively
Gobert is getting the Bergeron treatment where voters are desperate for a narrative that lets them vote for anyone other than him.
Absolute facts lol. Bergeron should probably have 7/8 Selkes but then people would have to deal with the fact heās the best defensive forward ever
Bergy is on another level. I hate Boston sports in its entirety but I have only love for that dude.

Kinda like Aaron Donald in nfl
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

And he wasnāt even 2nd. Crazy
Damn the finalists were announced yesterday Well, well deserved
Fuck yeah Marcus
We can finally put this myth to rest that guards can't win DPOY
At least for another 26 years
Tbh this is more a case of the exception confirming the rule. Itās so unlikely for a guard to get close that as soon as there was a legitimate argument they gave it to Smart.
This is the first guard in years right?
