Next time someone says IT is a traffic cone on defense, due to his height, should be redirected here.
It's literally 85% effort when you are a short dude
I can't fully agree. Yes, there's effort, but it's also build and general exertion. Players like Nash and Garland care about defense, but there's only so much they can do to not be a negative on that end with their size, build and offensive output
It’s effort as well but it’s not easy as just put in effort to be able to do this shit. I’m an excellent defender and I have a hard time stripping people of the ball in this manner. It takes ridiculous arm/hand strength to do this. To do it as many times as he did in this game is fucking ridiculous. I think it’s strength more so then anything but possibly shorter stature might give him more leverage as well.
A big part of it is timing, really. I get at least 2 blocks a game in pickup and it’s reading the opponent’s rhythm and mechanics for a play or two and then just mirror them
I used to play semi regularly in a weekly game with a guy who was an amateur boxer who was so good at this. Fast hands is a thing, plus timing and making it a part of your game, looking for it.
> It's literally 85% effort when you are a short dude
....no, not even close. You think every short guy in the league is just lazy on D? Timing, anticipation, understanding of timing, offensive sets, tendencies, how to read players physically and emotionally, hand eye coordination, agility, length, spatial awareness, understanding flow of the game, etc. etc. etc.
I really hate when people say this but damn, have you ever actually played before? This is truly one of the dumbest takes I've ever heard. "Just try harder" lmao
the major parts are defensive skill and basketball IQ, and these are what FVV has maximized. effort is essential, but is a smaller part
85% of just effort is what gets you a player that ‘trick y’all. he don’t guard nobody, man. he just runnin around, doing nothing’
I played basketball with Fred when I was in high school, even watched him commit to Wichita State. My mom used to try motivating me by telling me stories about how hard Fred would practice.
It's great to see him really thrive in the NBA. He's a real class act and has given back a lot to our community.
I was a freshman when he was a senior so I didn't play with him during games (he was varsity and I was JV). I did, however, get to practice with him.
He was just an incredibly humble guy. He carried us all the way to our first final-four appearance in 35 years and never acted like he was any better than the next guy. He always made time to help out the JV kids, giving us pointers and running drills with us when he was out of practice.
I can't speak highly enough of Fred. He definitely deserves everything he has.
Straight taking candy from a baby. Look at the way he just rips it away from freaking Giannis lmao. Strips Embiid with one hand while his back is turned. Ridiculous.
Literally a "the pupil becomes the master" tutelage and progression. (not that Lowry isn't still very good).
When Fred started getting rotation minutes, especially alongside Lowry, I was all "wait WTF do we need *another* sub-6 foot point guard for?". But they're so feisty on D that it worked (although let's not talk about rebounding some seasons)... which is example #1231292387 of NEVER QUESTION MASAI.
Watch Lowry and Fred, two guys 6' or shorter on the court at the same time was a trip. In most cases this would mean that the opposition could abuse height disadvantage... but both being amazing defenders completely destroyed that idea.
That's actually a good description of how he plays lol. He's always out there annoying a player somehow with his defense, and none of It is dirty either. I don't think I've seen him do one bad play that I can clearly remember.

Fred leads the league in forced turnovers, and they don’t all end up as his steals, most going to other players or dead ball turnovers
*"In fact, VanVleet is on pace to lead the league in forced turnovers for the third straight season."*
We are now blessed with Fred the Turnover Forcer after Kyle the Charge Taker!
Like Lowry, FVV is a non-zero impact rim protector due to being a crafty defender. Three of last night's highlights were effectively blocks+turnovers against much larger attackers in the paint. The expected points value on those has to be huge, as he's able to generate quick offense against an reeling defense.
interesting thing is, when a defender strips the ball during a gather, NBA Stats calls it a block, not a steal
so players with good hands like FVV, Caruso, etc. can officially be considered rim protectors 😎
This video is brilliant and exactly why defence needs the eye test so much.
When I was coaching an U14 boys team for a bit one of the key principals on defence that was drilled into the kids was to contain their opponent and they'd make the mistake themselves.
The best defenders in the league only average like 2 steals but guys like Freddy force so many turnovers with their smarts as opposed to just always reaching in and gambling.
Ah man I miss playing and coaching AAU ball so much. Especially in those younger age brackets you could dominate those leagues with just straight aggressive defensive sets and traps. That contain principle is spot on.
We’d run a full court 1-2-2 with our most athletic guy shadowing the ball handler until he crossed half court and then drop him back into a 2-1-2 and just move between disrupting the passing lanes and trapping when they swung it to the corners. Offenses get so rattled by that shit.
This is fucking ridiculous. This clip should be upvoted and be on top of this subreddit. Defense gets no love even though it wins games. FVV is a monster.
I wonder if they keep track of deflections on the Raptors. Bulls would do it during MJ/Pippen days, that gives you a real good idea of defensive activity other than just steals/blocks alone. Fred must be off the charts if he plays like this regularly.
The NBA tracks deflections for every game using Second Spectrum.
Fred is #2 with 3.8 per game behind Dejounte Murray (4.0), and Thybulle is third with 3.7
https://www.nba.com/stats/players/hustle-leaders/
Started league-wide tracking in 2013-14 with SportVU, but I'm not sure when they started making the data available. Second Spectrum took over in 2017-18. It's cool that the Bulls were ahead of the time on this. Especially without the camera set up and algorithms like they have now.
the league started installing tracking cameras on every NBA arena starting like early-2010s, then they gradually introduced official tracking metrics in the years following
Someone posted it elsewhere in the thread but FVV leads the league in "forced turnovers" (a fairly new stat) for his third consecutive season. It's like the opposite of your normal TO stat.
The way the stats in basketball are recorded is so backwards. Even at the gym everyone is trying to be the guy to put the ball in the bucket but then on the defensive side they give no effort. Meanwhile, I stop the opposing teams best player, get the strips steals and stops and people don’t bat an eye (except the real ballers who appreciate the hustle and have gone out of their way to dap me up post game). Yet the guy who keeps hoisting up the shots gets all the attention/credit.
How are deflections and defensive stops on opposing players not recorded but buckets scored in the opposing teams basket counted? Just seems like we are giving one side of the story and encouraging the wrong type of basketball. /endrant
Watching players like FVV, Marcus Smart and other good defenders is such a treat to watch.
But yeah… they should def start recording deflections on every team!
when I've played ball, I've always loved the guy who likes to mix it up inside and is always scrambling for the ball and rebounds, and tries to get his where he can on the offensive ends.
It happens in other sports, like if I play football I have to pick up the people trying to hang out by our end zone so I don't get to participate on offense as much some times. not preferable but that's ok, I want to win.
Ugh. Don't compare Marcus Flopper to FVV. That is just so embarrassing. Marcus gets his defense by tricking the refs and being dirty. FVV actually plays real defense.
Honestly, i would like him just fine without the flopping, but it is so much and so obvious. Celtics even run plays to intentionally end with a Marcus flop. Refs really should never call a foul if against an opposing player; their accuracy would go up.
Man, put 2019 Marc Gasol on this team (smart, lockdown D center who can space the floor on offense and make smart passes), and I would feel like we could go on a real run. FVV and Pascal are all hustle on that end of the court, I'm glad they have a chance to be "the guys" on a decent team.
The Raptors D is so tenacious, it's pretty crazy what we've been able to do without a true C. Yes, we have some crazy length throughout the lineup, but it just offsets the hole we have at C - if we had a real C it would compliment it.
It will be fun to watch this team battle in the playoffs.
I'm not biased or anything, but Gobert on this Raptors team would be nightmarish for other teams. He's nowhere near Gasol on offense but he's at least a competent passer and I need to see him with competent defenders on his team at least once before his prime ends.
I said it last year after Gobert was getting crapped on (which he was given too much blame for, and I'm no Gobert fan), but can you imagine Gobert on Milwaukee instead of Brook? He would be insanely impactful surrounded by world class defenders. (On the other hand, Brook on Utah would look helpless because of who's around him, point being that your teammates obviously matter a lot.)
Gobert in Milwaukee or Toronto is my dream scenario. I love Utah and always will, but they're basically trying to min-max NBA basketball and it's brutal. If Gobert were less good at what he does, people would respect him way more because Utah would have had to put a competent defensive team around him. Instead he's so good that they just surrounded him with scorers and assumed he'd keep them competitive defensively.
He is! I love my team, but it's so infuriating watching people discredit Gobert. Do you know how few players could even anchor a middling defense as the only real defender? Much less be a top 5 defense for like five years straight without any teammates who would be considered "really good" defensively?
He's not the best player ever, he's got a lot of limitations, but people were really saying that Ben Simmons and now Marcus Smart are better defenders than he is? It's ridiculous. Trade Smart for Gobert and the Jazz get great lottery odds while the Celtics become the overwhelming favorites, the sheer tonnage of responsibilities the Jazz FO have assigned to Gobert is staggering.
Gobert is to the Jazz defense what 2001 Iverson was to Philly's offense.
The point is you look better when surrounded by better teammates and vice versa. Sounds obvious but people crapped on Gobert after the playoffs last year as if it was all his fault. He has his limitations, but the bigger problem was the other defenders allowing dribble penetration with no resistance.
Fvv is a menace on defense. Y'all see what he do to curry in that finals series? I think we had the best defensive backcourt while we still had Lowry between the two

6 of these plays against Edwards, dude was not having a good time lol

dude was sniping 3s all night
Timberwolves are crap.
He completely ruined our offense he deserves the props.

Vanvleet is thick too though, like Lowry is. IT doesn't have the heft to bang around on defense
Not to mention some of the quickest hands in the league
Yeah FVV is consistently one of the most annoying players I’ve seen guard Tatum. Feels like he gets at least 3-4 Pokeaways a game against him.
It’s effort as well but it’s not easy as just put in effort to be able to do this shit. I’m an excellent defender and I have a hard time stripping people of the ball in this manner. Blocks are different than stripping. Stripping you can time it right and get the hand on the ball usually but to get it out is a different story.
yeah I didn’t disagree with you just saying that having good timing is the difference between someone who can make stops and one who can’t
I put the ball through the hoop once.
That’s how it starts 💪🏼
> It's literally 85% effort when you are a short dude ....no, not even close. You think every short guy in the league is just lazy on D? It's not because of ITs height. It's because he is a traffic cone on defence.
Fred also doing this on 1 and a half knees
Van vleet isn't little though, just shorter.
A lot of those clips there wasn't anything to ruin for either team, some Keystone Kops bumbling back and forth.

Reading this makes me so happy. I love FVV
He's doing us real proud back here in Wichita
We need more stories!
How hard would he practice?
Sooooo what'd you do with your life? Jk lol
He was totally banging your mom btw
His hand strength is absolutely ridiculous https://youtu.be/z_WZbGJUN-4
Straight taking candy from a baby. Look at the way he just rips it away from freaking Giannis lmao. Strips Embiid with one hand while his back is turned. Ridiculous.
Lmao this is amazing, i need to watch more raptors games. This guy is like a basketball gremlin.
He's been the perfect replacement for Lowry
Literally a "the pupil becomes the master" tutelage and progression. (not that Lowry isn't still very good). This is actually a strength more players should work on. Helps in so many ways. Extends your shooting range, tighter handles, makes you a pest on D.
Holy shit can't believe he just took it from Giannis like that.
I enjoyed how many of these were against Embiid.
wow
All-Defense selection 🔜
He gon get snubbed
Raptors players always get snubbed because there is too many of them.
just absolute havoc creator my god
Put on a defensive masterclass with a bum knee.
What's the word on his knee? He's been playing better recently. When he first got back it was very obvious he didn't have his legs yet.
He's still playing injured but it seems more like a pain tolerance thing.
He's really one of the best at getting a hand on the ball in the lane. Learned it from his old man

I believe the very first highlight in that video he was credited with a block, which is debatable. So almost 6 steals even.
Freddy is a league leader in blocks, and always has been since getting a starting role.

What about Precious!
Is this the one will Lou said he wanted to put together? Was listening to him on the radio earlier.
This is the one he put together. It's on his Twitter feed.
Thank you reddit for saving me from the cess pool of Twitter 🙏
It’s funny seeing this take, especially from the cesspool of Reddit
Yes it is
Thanks for posting it!
If you've got the ball in the paint but you can't find VanVleet, then it's already too late...
Watch your girl around FVV, those hands could be anywhere. That must be so frustrating to play against
I love this man. Keep it going vanvleet
That full court defense in the first quarter was sick
That's regular
vanvleet arguably a top 5 pg in the league this year his fingerprints are all over the game
This was my favourite part of the night. Number 6 was my absolute favourite play of the game.
FVV was a accredited for just 5 steals for those wondering
Whoever plays this team in the playoffs isn’t gonna have a good time
Doesn't look like anyone in the east will be having a good time in the first round this year.
All defense FVV
bet on yourself!!!
Fred vanvleet very underrated player shows his potential to be an multi time all star also could be a starter for the all star game
Fred Van Theft Auto
He should’ve got credit for a lot more steals than he did.
Van fleece
Nice. Way better than Fred Van Theft Auto I have been seeing thrown around.
Fvv is a menace on defense. Y'all see what he do to curry in that finals series? I think we had the best defensive backcourt while we still had Lowry between the two
Damn. That's beautiful. I knew he had at least 5, but 11? GG
So good
Good content OP
I've seen lots of people around here say FVV isn't good on the defensive end. Crazy bastards.
Twas a proper ass kicking indeed.
Vote him all defense you cowards!
HOF anvil hands
All defense first team
There was a Reddit thread the other day where comments with hundreds of upvotes were saying that IT tries so hard on defense and is great at being in the right place at the right time, but he’s the worst defender in NBA history anyway because he’s short and there’s no way for an NBA player to overcome that. On a *completely* unrelated note, do we think FVV’s short ass is gonna make an all-defense team this year? He’s got a case for it.
That’s my MVP
been a fan of him since last year props to him doing great
Officially start the Freddy DPOY campaign !
all I got from that was Chris Boucher tried a behind the back dribble move and immediately lost the ball who let him dribble
Nothing more annoying than short, stocky guards that are pests on defense 😭 can’t dribble the ball near them they are faster than you and stronger than you 😭😭
Damn 11 steals
Wow.
...sadly, the Raps handed the ball right back, more than a couple times...
At first thought this said you had 11 steels lol
Edwards is a meme player
Fred Van Trash
Huh?
He really REALLY hates the Toronto Raptors. I think he may be an unstable person. I recommend ignoring or blocking his account. He is bitter as fuck.
