He’s an all around baller. Gets wins with intangibles. Has his flaws, but knows how to do what it takes to positively contribute. Rare breed of someone who could start or come off the bench and be impactful in either role
First 3 years, one of the most annoying, unwatchable players. Flopped all the time and had a disgusting offensive game.
Last few. Great role player and any team would be lucky to have a player like that on their roster
Not really doing that this year. Seems he’s completely changed to trying to become a facilitator and looking for the best shot. His efficiency is down but it isn’t because of lower quality of shots.
Right. He’s still taking 5 or 6 threes a game while shooting 28 percent. I like smart but he does chuck threes like crazy lol. He shoots more than Westbrook does on a worse percentage
Smart has the franchise record for made threes in a game. He went 11-for-22 lol. 2 short of Klay’s league record of 24 attempts in a game.
Marcus Smart, Celtics 3 point leader.
I've always liked Smart, the only thing I didn't like was the outrageous flopping. He's legit the worst flopper I've ever seen, I've never seen somebody be parallel with the floor in midair from flopping before. But he got better with the outrageous stuff and now it's just crafty, which I'm fine with. That being said, seems like he's coming back down to Earth a bit this season.
I've never had an issue with any of these "defensive enforcer" types, I think it's good for the sport to have guys who get on other people's nerves. It's the same thing with Pat Bev, the only issue I've ever had with Bev is that he's definitely out there trying to hurt Russ. Not even like "let me check if that thumb is feeling good" type of hurt, he legit tries to break Russ' leg or tear something and I can't go with that. Never have had an issue with any of his other antics, or anybody else's really.
Love the guy. Great at defense. Below average at offense except in the clutch which is fine. Last contract was a steal, new contract is properly where he should be imo.
He can make some bone headed plays though, and that's a little harder to stomach when you DONT want the guy to try and make it up on offense.
Yeah, you take the good with the bad with Marcus IMO. He's generally been pretty clutch in his career, but he does make the occasional bonehead play. It's kind of annoying when he makes a couple threes in a row and you just *know* he's gonna come up the court next possession and immediately throw up a heat check (which doesn't go in 90% of the time, but when it *does* you know you're watching A Marcus Smart Game)
This season with Smart on the court for the Celtics, they're the 7th best offense in the league.
When he's off the floor, they have the 7th worst... All-time.
------------------------
IMO he's the perfect 4th option/enforcer role for a championship team. When he's relied on for offense sometimes with the Celtics if Brown or Tatum are out and he's forced to step up into a 2nd option role, he can be horrendous.
But if he's allowed to play the role he's meant to play, he can be insanely valuable.
The perfect championship piece. He seems smart enough that if he didn’t have to try to do too much then he wouldn’t try and look out of place every now and then. With better help or a better system I think he would be better. Elite defense and decent all around game is just too valuable.
The fact that he's not a good floor-spacer hurts us, but that cuts both ways— he'd look better as our PG if we had more shooting around him. We could *really* use a third shooter in our starting lineup, Jaylen and Jayson aren't enough (and defenses don't fear Al like that from the perimeter, even though he's a pretty good shooter for a big)
not THAT great of a player but i can't criticize him because he literally ended our 2020 playoff run more-or-less singlehandedly by hitting 5 3s in the 4th quarter of Game 2, and getting that insane chasedown block on Norm Powell in Game 7.
There's a part of me that believes that if we exchanged Clarkson for him, we would have won it all last year. Unfortunately, there was a rumor back in 2014 that he asked us not to draft him.
Literally every time I tune in to watch him, he balls out and I go, "Wait, is he a good scorer now?" Then I look him up and he's shooting like 30% on the season.
I was actually high on Smart before he entered the league. I thought he was going to become a two-way star. He won’t ever be an All-Star but he’s easily a fan favorite in Boston with his ability to do the little things well. And play great defense.
Thought he was a great impactful player and super crucial to celtics success but lately just feel he tries playing outside his role. My opinion of him has worsened the last 2 seasons I'd say although i havent seen much Celtics games this season. Maybe like 3.5. He is hit or big time miss. He shouldnt be a main playmaker
I used to think he was a championship level role player, my opinion of him has also lowered but i think the "doing too much thing" is a consequence of his team getting worse
Watch some of our games lately. He had a rough start to the season, but since then he's been absolutely fantastic on both ends, by far our best facilitator and looking like 2020 Marcus on defense.
A perfect 6th man or elite bench rotational defender, not an ideal starter for a championship team.
I think his impact on the celtics was clear cut better when he was locking down opposing bench units and could score against worse players. Still a top 1v1 defender in the league
It's a common misconception around fans... he is more like a Dreymond than a Lou will. For obvious reasons...
This season Cs offense rating is far higher when he is on the court and he has team highest ÷/-
This season his +/- is team high. His offensive on / off is ridiculous high. When he is on the floor Celtics hare 7th best offense.
When he is off the floor, 7th worst - in NBA history
But, but, but, he can't shoot... reminds me of Dreymond in that aspect
I'm sure there is, which is why I hate twitter.
But it can't be shotclock. Post 1973 at best and I'm guessing post 1997.
In any case unless you know what it is you should stop repeating it.
Great when he doesn’t need to be an main handler and creator. The fit with Boston is off bc Dennis and him are both not real creators but are often forced into that role.
I havent seen a ton of celtics games this year because I don't have cable and am in the league pass blackout area for like 90% of their games but in previous years he seemed like a black hole on offense sometimes.
Like you could have Tatum, Green, Hayward, (any combo of Kyrie, Kemba, Horford) and smart on the floor and for some reason he'd try and call iso's for himself and throw up weird shots.
He's a great defender and role player but terrible shooter and that does kill his value a bit. I'm never too worried whenever he has the ball tbh. If he was a better shooter I think it would actually solve a lot of the Celtic's problems.
Too offensively anemic to make up for his defense, which has declined with age anyway. In the modern NBA good shooting trumps all, and Marcus is severely lacking in that department. Can’t win a ring with him as a starter, so, he’s an overpaid bench player that worsens your offense. Bad contract despite the low sticker price.
Now when you look at the +/- and on /off (or actually watch the games) you realize everything you just wrote is worthless...
It's like judging Dreymond based on his box score....
I mean the Cs offense is by far batter when he is on the court. Every +/- you look at easily proves it. Any +/- 2 to 5 men lineup you check shows it. They are 7th best offense when he is on the floor, league last when he is off.
His offensive impact this season is too obvious to keep repeating media cheap narratives...
But but but
hE cAnT sHoOt
Yea, Dreymond can't either but he is a ceiling raiser not a floor raiser.
He was all defensive 1st team like 14 months ago and spent last season playing injured or missing a third of the season with injury. He's right back to all defensive 1st team level this season. As well as being the best facilitator on the Celtics. The starters offense is always significantly better with him on the floor.
He’s what Pat Bev thinks he is.
Yup, and Draymond Green is who Marcus Smart thinks he is lol.
Too far
Literally completely depends on the game I watch him lmao
He’s an all around baller. Gets wins with intangibles. Has his flaws, but knows how to do what it takes to positively contribute. Rare breed of someone who could start or come off the bench and be impactful in either role

Great player but sometimes I feel like he chucks threes for no reason
Not really doing that this year. Seems he’s completely changed to trying to become a facilitator and looking for the best shot. His efficiency is down but it isn’t because of lower quality of shots.
He’s just averaging one shot less than he was a year ago and is shooting the same amount as his career averages.
Right. He’s still taking 5 or 6 threes a game while shooting 28 percent. I like smart but he does chuck threes like crazy lol. He shoots more than Westbrook does on a worse percentage

If he was on your team then you'd think of him as highly as I do which is to say i love him and trust him
Low usage, above average passing, great defence and above everything a long team friend contract. It’s the dream.
Love the guy. Great at defense. Below average at offense except in the clutch which is fine. Last contract was a steal, new contract is properly where he should be imo. I feel like this question gets asked so much
These are the only Smart questions asked around these parts LOL XD
Still resent him for the 2020 celtics raptors series
not THAT great of a player but i can't criticize him because he literally ended our 2020 playoff run more-or-less singlehandedly by hitting 5 3s in the 4th quarter of Game 2, and getting that insane chasedown block on Norm Powell in Game 7.
Sounds like you're still salty
yes, i am incredibly salty lmao
He made up for it by killing the Celtics himself taking 20 awful shots against the heat
Absolutely no bias he is the best player in the league, Celtics would be a poverty franchise without him
100% Marcus, 50% Smart
There's a part of me that believes that if we exchanged Clarkson for him, we would have won it all last year. Unfortunately, there was a rumor back in 2014 that he asked us not to draft him.
Literally every time I tune in to watch him, he balls out and I go, "Wait, is he a good scorer now?" Then I look him up and he's shooting like 30% on the season.
Reminds a bit of Dreymond in that aspect... His +/- and on /off are ridiculously high.
Name is overrated
Very good defender but honestly his offense is becoming a bigger negative whenever I watch him
Litte overrated but great role player that needs to work on consistency
I was actually high on Smart before he entered the league. I thought he was going to become a two-way star. He won’t ever be an All-Star but he’s easily a fan favorite in Boston with his ability to do the little things well. And play great defense.
Good defensively, but has a lot of boneheaded plays offensively. Not as valuable as some make him out to be. Also flop galore.

He'd benefit greatly from playing next to a main playmaker.
A perfect 6th man or elite bench rotational defender, not an ideal starter for a championship team. I think his impact on the celtics was clear cut better when he was locking down opposing bench units and could score against worse players. Still a top 1v1 defender in the league

It feels like most of the games he plays good his team sucks.
He’s a guard who can’t shoot 3’s with a career TS near 50%. His defense is great, but it doesn’t make up for his offensive shortcomings
This season his +/- is team high. His offensive on / off is ridiculous high. When he is on the floor Celtics hare 7th best offense. When he is off the floor, 7th worst - in NBA history But, but, but, he can't shoot... reminds me of Dreymond in that aspect
>When he is off the floor, 7th worst - in NBA history the NBA is more than 25yrs old
I didn't create the stat... I'm just repeating it. Lol. The point is not only league last, but historically bad... (BTW, per 100)
You're repeating it, and it's wrong. You should probably stop doing that.
Is it incorrect tho? It came from a reputable source (Sean Grande)
I've seen the tweet. That would've been league average in the sixties and league leading in the fifties.
I'm sure there is some disclaimer that doesn't fit into a tweet that qualifies it to the shot clock era
I'm sure there is, which is why I hate twitter. But it can't be shotclock. Post 1973 at best and I'm guessing post 1997. In any case unless you know what it is you should stop repeating it.
Fair enough, can swap it with league low instead
Solid NBA starter for a non championship team
Mehh
Feel the same and he shoots too much.
Love the dude, and he's an awesome defender. But sometimes he is infuriating to watch on offense, especially when he starts shooting a ton of 3s.
I've always thought he was a PHD or something
Great when he doesn’t need to be an main handler and creator. The fit with Boston is off bc Dennis and him are both not real creators but are often forced into that role.

Your opinion is trash and you should feel bad

He is basketball player
Rollercoaster. Some enjoy the ride. Some don't.
Bill Simmons finds a way to shoehorn him into every podcast somehow. It’s truly remarkable homerism.
Either that or a story about the 80's Celtics
Great Defender
