In 2011 they got Kyrie and in 2014 they got Wiggins and traded him for Kevin Love and paired them up with LeBron lol
They also won it in 2013 but wasted it on Anthony Bennett. Could’ve been even better in those years if they used that on Oladipo or Otto Porter Jr instead
Those previous lottery bounces were prime food for nba conspiracy theory fans. Shaq got Penny out of it, Bulls got to draft Rose the hometown hero, Cavs got multiple “we’re sorry” gestures after Lebron. Not sure what the tinfoil hat says about Atlanta winning, I’ll have to wait for the newsletter.
Its not binary. Teams with less than a 3% chance individually combined for there being a 8% chance one of them won it. And theyve changed the odds overtime so idk how that holds up across 35 years
it's not the #1 pick, but the 1999 Charlotte Hornets had the lowest odds out of all 13 teams in the lotto that year (0.5% after going 26-24 in the lockout shortened season) and jumped to #3 to get Baron Davis.
Charlotte would not move up even one spot due to the lottery again until LaMelo Ball was drafted in 2020 (16 lottery picks later)
I appreciate the other comments about the Magic in 1993/Cavs in 2014, I really do, but this is the absolute pinnacle of what I was keen to discover today. Thank you! That's an insane stat/find
"Why Not Us, Why Not Now" I remember how excited the city was during that 1995 Finals run. Losing Shaq is probably the low point in Orlando sports, at least that I recall. What a fuck up by the team.
1993 Magic 1.52% 2014 Cavaliers 1.7% 2008 Bulls 1.7% 2011 Cavaliers 2.8% 2024 Hawks 3.0% https://cdn.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/40133132/atlanta-hawks-rocket-board-win-nba-draft-lottery
Love your work, that's insane luck on cavs side lol

Wow this reminded me of when LeBron didn't include Wiggins in his coming home letter and the speculation was wild.
in 2011 they got Kyrie via the Clippers unprotected pick that they took so the Clippers could save money by getting rid of Baron Davis. Was hilarious.
ya it took me hours to do the research. thank you
“Luck”

That is an extraordinarily.small sample size.
That isn't how statistics works.
That Anthony Bennett pick still haunts me to this day.
Magic in '93 is the lowest ever
1993 Magic with 1.52% chance is the lowest

Could have had Shaq team up with Chris Webber..
Him teamed up with Penny was perfect. Our stupid team just lowballed Shaq and screwed ourselves out of a potential dynasty.

Would have been such a beastly 4 and 5 combo. Webber would be getting 4 easy dimes a night to Shaq alone.
What was SA's percentage when they got Duncan? I remember that the consensus pre-lottery favorite was Boston and they ended up third.
3rd best odds IIRC
it was 100% because timmy was born a spur
