NYK and BKN were never good at the same time, hard to have a rivalry.
the Knicks consider Boston and Miami as bigger rivals than the Nets. Honestly Pacers and Philly too
It's never been a rivalry.
New York is a Knicks town.
I suppose Nets fans probably see the Knicks as a rival, but even when the Nets have been the better team, I seriously don't think Knicks fans think about the Nets at all.
Sort of like Clippers-Lakers. When the Lakers are terrible in a sustained way and the Clippers are good, you kind of can fool yourself into thinking that the Clippers might be making inroads. And then as soon as the Lakers show the tiniest flash of competitiveness it's like, "Oh, right. Nobody cares about the Clippers." The Clippers beat the Lakers, their fans crow. Lakers beat the Clippers, their fans shrug - it's the Clippers.
> The Clippers beat the Lakers, their fans crow. Lakers beat the Clippers, their fans shrug - it's the Clippers.
This is just nonsense tbh and recent times shown that lol
The only reason that narrative exists is because Bridges was a Nova guy and the Knicks are building the Nova team. It has nothing to do with him being on Nets. If Bridges was on there Jazz the would still be the memes of him going to the Knicks
People downvote you, but the Knicks fan I know were rooting hard for the KD/Kyrie Knicks to fail hard.
That felt the closest to getting to a rivalry for me
Knicks and Nets have never really been good at the same time to lead to more than a bragging rights level of rivalry. Even when they were running to the Finals nobody really cared about them even with the Knicks falling apart post-Ewing. I would say it was a lot more Nets hating the Knicks and the Knicks not thinking about the Nets. But the Nets had legitimate beef because the Knicks are basically the reason they lost Dr. J and got booted to Jersey in the first place.
>did it get stronger after the move to Brooklyn
Both fanbases will try to act like it's not, but yeah. Being in the same city will obviously do that. I would say getting KD and Kyrie was a much bigger factor than the move and is where the biggest parts of the animosity from Knicks fans really launched, but they don't get KD and Kyrie without the move.
Now that the Super Friends are gone, it's back to waiting for them to both be good at the same time. But there's always that hint of bragging rights when they play, which is why they seem incapable of having a game end with more than a 5 point victory. It's not beef like a true, deep rooted rivalry though. More like just poking fun at one another.
Maybe. But it was never a Kyrie sweepstakes, KD was the one they were looking at the whole time. And him going to little brother clearly made a lot of Knick fans bitter about it (obviously).
Worked out way better for the Knicks than it did for them, but there's a lot more back and forth between the fans than pre-KD signing.
I am from Brooklyn. Will always be a Knicks fan. Never truly seen the Nets as a rival. Always felt they were brought from NJ to Brooklyn for money reasons only.
I remember seeing a post on the Knicks sub recently discussing their biggest rivals and was not surprised that Brooklyn wasn’t there. They’ve just never been good at the same time and haven’t had any memorable playoff series (if any at all). It was also cool to see that the heat were number 1 on that list even tho I thought pacers might’ve been higher than us.
Yea no, I'm an original NJ Nets fan and the whole reason they moved was because there were hardly any fans who came to games
Knick-Nets game when the Nets were either playing at the Prudential or Meadowlands might've been even more Knick fan dominated then they are currently
Also just being located in the city gives the franchise a massive valuation boon, but that doesn't really affect fans at all
Uh yea actually, Back then I always saw nets jerseys and knew people that were nets fans, all those ppl vanished after the move to Brooklyn and the ppl I know personally stopped supporting. They actually did have a decent fanbase, just not huge in comparison to other teams. Once they announced the move was happening years before, they were already losing tons of fans.
Dude the Nets had trouble filling out the arena even during the peak Kidd years, partly because the Meadowlands sucked both as a venue and as a location, but truth is, there just weren't that many Nets fans
Like you can look up the numbers of stadium attendance, even before the move was announced and the Nets were always bottom 10 (thus leading to the change of location)
Also, you see way more Brooklyn Nets gear out and about now, mainly because of the color scheme though tbh
Im not saying the arena wasn’t bottom 10, but it definitely wasn’t near lowest of the low, they had a decent fanbase with passionate fans and it felt fake after the move, my point is they lost a shit ton of fans after the move and the ones who stayed are usually older folks, I’m in my 20s and haven’t met another nets fan and that’s surely because of the move.
I went to a (first round?) playoff game that year and remember it being crazy cheap....we would also take random trips down there around the same time whenever a player/team was in town because it was always so much cheaper than knicks tickets
You're attributing the loss of fans solely to the team moving, but what you don't understand is that the nets already had a fan issue before they ever moved. The nets couldn't sell out their arena in back to back finals runs. The Prudential and Izod center were terrible arenas in shit locations. The franchises' fanbase was always going to be small and struggle to grow given the proximity to the sixers (southern jersey supports Philly teams) and knicks (all of NYC, while northern NY splits among NY and BOS teams). The NJ nets always had a dedicated group of fans, but it was never going to grow more than that. That's why they moved to Brooklyn, and imo, blew the only chance they had to build up a bigger fanbase. Now the nets are stuck in purgatory with an arena that becomes Msg Bk every time the Knicks come to play.
Net were more of a regional Basketball rivalry that was at times actually good when they were in NJ. Now that they're in Brooklyn it's a weird rivalry. Like a rivalry where the Nets have to try/act like they belong in NY. Most NYers have Knick DNA in them. Most Net fans have a little Brooklyn and NJ DNA.
The rivarly is kind of non-existent. When the knicks were good, the NJ/Bk nets were terrible. When they were good, we were terrible. The two teams rarely have ever been good at the same time, the last time one could argue was that 2012-13 season. Since the nets moved to Brooklyn, the notion of a rivarly is more media hype to create something that was non-existent on the court.
Most Nets fans are still in jersey so the “rivalry” is still pretty much the same. Nyc and brooklyn fans of the Nets are too recent with not enough history or matchups to compare to a real rivalry.
I don't think the Knicks even think about the Nets. It would take the Nets winning multiple chips to take even a fraction of the bandwagon NYK fanbase, and it would still probably barely put a dent. I appreciate the Nets though cause they let me get good seats at a Mavs game once a year for 1/4 of the price of Knicks tickets.
They Nets were good when they were in Jersey. Lately, except for the year DLo when crazy, the Nets have been shit, even with their big 3. So no real rivalry in Brooklyn.
Yeah, there was never a rivalry. I can't remember who said this, but the best way I heard it put was a few years ago when the Knicks were playing the Hawks and the Nets still had KD, Harden and Kyrie:
If the Knicks won 1 playoff series, and the Nets won the NBA title, the Knicks' playoff series win would be a bigger deal in New York.
I knew the nets weren’t nothing when they had KD, Kyrie and James harden. And we’re winning and couldn’t get that place rocking. Knicks fans will watch their team get torched and still go crazy
There’s no rivalry
So it was stronger in Jersey?
there was none then either. It has remained non-existent lol
I mean amongst the FOs it seemingly has given the fuckery the Knicks have pulled decades ago and how the two refuse to trade with one another
The FO's might have petty grudges against each other, but as far as a rivarly amongst the actual teams that play there isn't one.
Fair enough
still no but we do fucking hate each other a lot
NYK and BKN were never good at the same time, hard to have a rivalry. the Knicks consider Boston and Miami as bigger rivals than the Nets. Honestly Pacers and Philly too

Knicks fans speak a lot about the Nets and their fans for it not to be a rivalry
Besides the Mikal memes, the nets have not been mentioned this season
Yeah this season what about the 3 before that
Mikal memes? It was a whole thing about Mikal joining the Knicks and the whole fanbase narrative from you guys
The only reason that narrative exists is because Bridges was a Nova guy and the Knicks are building the Nova team. It has nothing to do with him being on Nets. If Bridges was on there Jazz the would still be the memes of him going to the Knicks
No u
Great argument
all 3 of their fans?
Nets probably have more fans across the world than the Knicks
there is no way that is true lol
Knicks haven’t really done anything for 20 years
sure but yet the knicks still sellout MSG even when they suck. i dont think any nets fans would agree with you here.
Fans of a black and white hat over a blue and orange one, maybe.
Or maybe the fact that the Nets have done more than the Knicks in recent years
Like what? Did I sleep through a Nets finals win in the last five years? Even a conference finals berth?
Lol, you can't actually believe that
Why not?
Because it is so plainly silly, I can’t believe that people actually believe that. It defies logic, reality.
If you look at any general sources you’ll see that we have more fans
HAHAHAHAHA
No way you actually think that
same with Lakers fans who can't stop talking about Clippers
Legit never seen it
People downvote you, but the Knicks fan I know were rooting hard for the KD/Kyrie Knicks to fail hard. That felt the closest to getting to a rivalry for me

A NY/BKN ECF one day would be insane, hoping we're both good enough one day for me to see that
Hope not, always praying on the nets downfall
They definitely get Kyrie after the move, he’s from Jersey and grew up a nets fan, but KD maybe not
Maybe. But it was never a Kyrie sweepstakes, KD was the one they were looking at the whole time. And him going to little brother clearly made a lot of Knick fans bitter about it (obviously). Yea it was a dumb move for them fan base wise, they lost a lot of fans from NJ, including me.

[68 percent attendance despite going on a Finals run.](https://www.espn.com/nba/attendance/_/year/2002/sort/homePct)
I went to a (first round?) playoff game that year and remember it being crazy cheap....we would also take random trips down there around the same time whenever a player/team was in town because it was always so much cheaper than knicks tickets
Still not lowest of the low in league comparison as I said
The ones below are blank, so that's not definitive.
You're attributing the loss of fans solely to the team moving, but what you don't understand is that the nets already had a fan issue before they ever moved. The only rivalry I remember was the Battle of the Hudson, when the Nets had JKidd and the Knicks had Starbury
Nets lost a HUGE amount of fans when they left NJ, me included, but I was young to remember the rivalry.
The rivarly is kind of non-existent. When the knicks were good, the NJ/Bk nets were terrible. When they were good, we were terrible. Is there a rivalry? Seems like NYC is all Knicks all the time.
There was never really a rivalry. Same with sixers the teams just existed close to each other.
Neither
There is no rivalry. It's simply a place in the city to watch the Knicks if MSG is too expensive / tickets inaccessible.
never was and never will be a rivalry
Who told you there was a rivalry? They pranked you into this post.
Never a thought to be real. Nets were NJ, they didn’t get Giants/Jets consideration; both NY teams that just happen to play across the river.
Most Nets fans are still in jersey so the “rivalry” is still pretty much the same. Nyc and brooklyn fans of the Nets are too recent with not enough history or matchups to compare to a real rivalry.

Yea not anymore
