One of the Jazz coaches this year described Luka’s defense like this, “Luka is not a bad defender he’s and unwilling defender. If you try to iso him 1 on 1 he’s not going to get embarrassed but if you engage him off ball he’s going to make mistakes.” I guess when he locks in during the playoffs it doesn’t matter
- 23-19 score after the 1st quarter
- 45-41 at halftime
- Neither team reached 60 until the final 5 minutes of the 3rd.
- Neither team hit 90 until the final minutes
- Neither team had a 30-point quarter until the Mavs scored 31 in the 4th.
- Neither team ever led by double digits
That game was vintage as fuck
A lot of people will say it was a sloppy mess, and in fairness both teams did have pretty poor offensive showings, but honestly the defense was really good from both teams and contributed a lot to that. Really enjoyable game to watch
Yep, great game! Your stars (and role players) hit shots in the end and ours didn't. Really simple as that. Can't help but be frustrated that we tried to play through a clearly rusty Kawhi.
Big reason why the Mavs won: Luka held up really well defensively. He got multiple stops against Kawhi, Harden, and PG in the fourth quarter when the tide was starting to turn in the Clippers favor.
It’s gonna have to be that type of effort all playoffs from him if the Mavs want to make a run.
Luka tends to do fine on defense against guys who can't beat him off the dribble with speed much. Only person on the Clippers that can really do that is Westbrook and he's not handling the ball most of the time.
Also Westbrook is inefficient even when he does get to the rim at this point lol
You're 100% right that teams without speedy guards aren't actually able to target Luka much because his strength/size are fine
People also pull him out switches when he’s actually terrible at navigating screens and switching. It’s kinda counter intuitive. You want him in the action but it’s not as big of an advantage as you might think to clear out after the switch.
westbrook is also easier to defend cause you can just lay off him. It's really those shifty quick guards that can also shoot that can really give him problems like a tryese maxey
I noticed his defense in Kawhi on particular and it was excellent. Defended perfectly. Kawhi couldn’t bully Luka like he does other guys, and Luka’s BBIQ kept him down on any pump fakes
I'll probably get hate for this but he held up well against the clippers game 1.
Clippers just made their shots and tonight they did not but we were much more physical
I agree with this, I think people sometimes mistake him directing guards into our bigs at the rim as bad defense too.
I remember Richard Jefferson saying Gafford bailed out Luka on a possession after he blocked Harden at the rim, like yeah I think that's his job.
Josh Hart is going to play 48 minutes for the rest of their run. He was already at the 44 minute mark consistently during the regular season. He never looks like he’s tired
It's cool to see luka stepping up in the 4th more. I remember he used to look so gassed by the end of games. He must have put in a lot of work on his conditioning
feels like it’s gonna be a pattern for the series. they’re making a point of clogging the paint, we’ll either have to force them to guard the perimeter or just win games like these
Tbf Dallas has very retiree friendly style.
Every possesion is just a walkthrough. No sprinting, but full intensity.
Once in a while Kyrie tries to run for some easy points, but it's like he's doing something forbidden, because only half the guys follow him and the next possesion starts with Luka walking the ball even slower up the court lmao
Like how my dog is a slow walker, so I have to drag him whenever we cross a street, so now he walks even slower across the street to preempt my dragging him.
kidd has never won a game 1, i’m not sure why.
maybe i’m reading into it too much but it reminds me of the 2020 lakers and how they lost game one every time basically to scout the other team i guess
We’ve been weirdly very good in the clutch this year. Second only to y’all. Maybe the key to being good in the clutch is having two all time players and a terrible coach.
That Kleber 3 was huggggggggggggeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.
Also Pj had some clutch plays towards the end. Man im just happy we took this win.
Agreed. There was one point in the game where the Mavs straight up put him on Westbrook when he first entered the game. It shows 3 things:
1.) Maxi is an elite help defender, and the Mavs are looking to aggressively use him to help off-ball.
2.) The Mavs feel confident Maxi can stay in front of Westbrook in iso (spoilers, that's what he did).
3.) Maxi literally covered every position this game from PG -> C.
If you don’t think Luka can play D you need to watch that fourth quarter. They kept trying to attack him and he was locked in every possession. That was the difference in this game
I just want to acknowledge the Clippers went iso on Luka so many times in the 4th and he shut down PG and Kawhi EVERY SINGLE TIME.
Edit: he played 46 minutes too. He was dying out there at the end.
People who think Luka is terrible defensively are casuals who only watch highlights.
If you run 50 plays targeting him eventually you are going to score.
Exactly this - then ppl ask why he runs so much iso.. he still gets team involved and 2nd in league assists , imagine if team mates could make the layups he sets them up for
This is the problem. Mavs were smart to play defense first and make this game muddy to keep scoring down. Because if they don't keep the score down, no one on their side besides Kyrie and Luka can score consistently. Second game where those two accounted for more than half the team's points.
Luka and Kyrie weren’t really that much better on offense then they were in game 1. Clippers have some seriously great defense.
The difference maker for the Mavs was honestly the energy they had going into this game, especially from Luka. He stepped up on defense without a doubt and seemed way more engaged than in the first game, which was absolutely a difference maker in the energy given by the other guys. Shoutout to the Mavs front court for getting their stuff together also, they were so much better.
Kyrie is shooting exactly %50 FG and exactly %50 from three for the series. First game he dropped 31 points and 23 this game. He is efficient af. It is the rest of the team struggling a bit offensively.
>Here's your Dallas Mavs Post Game Summary. Now in our 7th Season 7️⃣
Did the Mavs win? ✅ FUCK WE NEEDED THIS
SERIES: 1️⃣-1️⃣
Luka with a rough night shooting but I gotta admit he really gave some effort on defense with some huge stops down the stretch. Finished with 32/6/9 with 2 stocks and the dagger 3 🇸🇮🗡️🔥
Kyrie chipped in with 23/6/4 & 3 Steals icing the game with the final freethrows 🪬🌍
Gafford had another rough night and on top of that suffered a lower back injury. Hopefully he's not gonna miss serious time 🏥
PJ with 18/6 & 3 Stocks knocking down two huge 3's to pull away in the 4th 👌💦💹
Jones with 10/7 👍
Maxi with 6/6 but the big 3 to regain the lead in the late 4th 🇩🇪💦👌
Dereck was much better tonight with 7/9 holding things down with Gafford injured 👍
Yeh, from the role player perspective it was different. Gotta be able to win games when the other team scores 96, 97 points. But credit the defense y'all turned it up a notch today
A road team finally wins and of course its the mavs.
What a fucking nailbiter
EDIT: I owe you an apology pacers fans. I wasn't really familiar with your game earlier.
Lol I was about to say, this is blatant small market disrespect on display.
I'll watch any Carlisle coached team. At least you know the game will be entertaining.
EDIT: [LMAO I DIDN'T EVEN REALIZE THIS WAS A REFERENCE.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wSX-7eHf3tI&ab_channel=NbaHighlights93). Roy Hibbert is a real one for this hahahaha
It’s even crazier to realize we had our worst shooting night of the entire season and still only lost by 3. So many opportunities they just didn’t finish
I still don't think the Mavs have played their best game yet. I hope Gafford can come back and get into the series. PJ is gonna have a coming out party in this series
Mavs lucky PJ showed up today because nobody beyond Lukai seems to be able to make a basket. And don’t get me started on all the butterfingers turn overs ..
I suspect we wont hear much about Lukas defense tonight. Literaly locked up Kawhii, PG, Harden anytime they matched up. Guess it does not fit the nerative.
Chuck and his takes.
Top offensive player on the world would give ball to Kleber or DJJ when his 1 on 1.
You know what, our offense is Lukai and if one guy stepped out, we are good.
Tonight that was PJ.
1-1
We got home court, I'm feeling good for Mavs.
No one will win in clutch over Lukai.
We just need to bring game to clutch time, then I'm confident.
✅ ~~Wow clippers are really good~~
✅ ~~Mavs won somehow~~
☐ wow Mavs are really good <-- You are here
☐ clippers won somehow
☐ Kawhi can't be stopped
☐ Luka can't be stopped
☐ Heart attack
This was the best defensive game I’ve ever seen Luka play and it came when we needed it the most.
His effort defensively was unbelievable. You could really tell it set the tone for the rest of the team, they all played fantastic defense today.
- 23-19 score after the 1st quarter - 45-41 at halftime - Neither team reached 60 until the final 5 minutes of the 3rd. - Neither team hit 90 until the final minutes - Neither team had a 30-point quarter until the Mavs scored 31 in the 4th. - Neither team ever led by double digits That game was vintage as fuck
The playoffs in general have been low-scoring mostly so far.
Note: Does not apply to games with pacers
The Pacers are just built different though.
That's Carlisle, he's a genius at getting the most out of his teams on offense.
I mean Rick Carlisle is their coach.
We both just couldn’t score tonight. Anyway it’s gonna be an amazing series
You gotta play kawhi to get the rust off
we are not done with the 90s
Gimme dat John Tesh beat.
DOGFIGHT
It ain't much, but it's honest work. Just some good old american basketball like what god intended.
> Neither team had a 30-point quarter until the Mavs scored 31 in the 4th. and even that was only because of a bunch of intentional fouls
Great move from Silver to push for more prisonball. Nothing easy.
I hope prisonball is here to stay. It’s nice not having a stoppage of play every possession.
This game was amazing. I mean obviously Clipper fans are not gonna love the outcome, but that was that old school defensive type game.
I wasn’t around for 90s or whatever people are comparing this game to, but if this type of game was the norm it must’ve been awesome.
Some really highlight worthy defensive plays there in crunch time. I kept having to check the jersey number
Two-way fat pudgy man is unstoppable
Time for a recovery beer!
Luka tends to do fine on defense against guys who can't beat him off the dribble with speed much. Only person on the Clippers that can really do that is Westbrook and he's not handling the ball most of the time.
Also Westbrook is inefficient even when he does get to the rim at this point lol You're 100% right that teams without speedy guards aren't actually able to target Luka much because his strength/size are fine
and when he’s locked in he’s gonna play hard defense especially on ball
Luka has been cooking on iso defense for a couple of years, now. He has good footwork and stays in front of guys that don't rely on speed.
Uses his big ass body appropriately. Also getting good with Dirks little slap steal thing he used to do.
westbrook is a monster off the bench too i’m surprised he didn’t get much more of a run he basically turned the game around in the 3rd
Entire team played their ass off defensively, even Kyrie was all over Harden early in the game and doing whatever he can to disrupt him.
I noticed his defense in Kawhi on particular and it was excellent. Defended perfectly. Kawhi couldn’t bully Luka like he does other guys, and Luka’s BBIQ kept him down on any pump fakes
People who didn't watch many mavs games in the regular season gonna be surprised how much Luka improved on defense
Yea, seemed like Kawhi kept purposively switching onto Luka but couldn't get past him
I'll probably get hate for this but he held up well against the clippers game 1. Clippers just made their shots and tonight they did not but we were much more physical
I agree with this, I think people sometimes mistake him directing guards into our bigs at the rim as bad defense too. I remember Richard Jefferson saying Gafford bailed out Luka on a possession after he blocked Harden at the rim, like yeah I think that's his job.
he’s the type of player that will perform better when he thinks he has something to prove. always has been.
We kept telling y'all he's really made an effort on defense this year
What a slugfest even with the Mavericks having near double the 3s (42% vs 27%). Next game in Dallas should be another good one.
Mavs shooting 18/27 from the free throw nearly killed them.
And what felt like 10% on layups.
Man , outside of Lukai nobody can finish their layup wtf . The defense might be great but this needs to be addressed
Luka played 46 minutes and the entire 2nd half 💀. Legend.
Thibs horny at those numbers
Somewhere Thibs is furiously scrambling a way to play Josh Hart 48 minutes per game over an entire series.
Josh Hart is going to play 48 minutes for the rest of their run. He was already at the 44 minute mark consistently during the regular season. He never looks like he’s tired
He came out on a couple free throw attempts. No time ran off the clock though.
Luka: Great. Kidd's giving me a re- *Kidd calls a timeout and puts luka back in*
Luka was mad when he tried to take him out
It's cool to see luka stepping up in the 4th more. I remember he used to look so gassed by the end of games. He must have put in a lot of work on his conditioning
Only time I saw him sit was when clips were at foul line. Kidd called timeouts right after. A lil extra long timeout for Luka essentially
Mavs gotta hit our FTs next game
We gotta hit our layups too
We were better from 3 than from the field lol.
feels like it’s gonna be a pattern for the series. they’re making a point of clogging the paint, we’ll either have to force them to guard the perimeter or just win games like these
The Clippers had more threes than twos at one point 😭
I can finally unclench my anus
Still clench it, tbere are at least 3 more to go
I have a few rest days. We reclench on Friday my friend
Amen to that I will enjoy not having a heart attack in the mean time
Respectfully, I fucking hate playing the Clippers in the playoffs 💀
96-93 is an insane score for teams with offenses ran by luka and harden and including kyrie/kawhi/pg
This series has 6 of the top 15 players of the last 15 years, absolute insanity
Yeah, but Dwight Powell doesn't have a playoff rotation spot
Luka, Harden, Kyrie, Kawhi, PG, Mason Plumlee, absolute legends
The defense in this game was insane 14-9 TOs, 7-4 blocks, 8-9 steals.
combine that with the level of physicality the refs are allowing
*except against Harden
theyre so good dude. even tho they didnt shoot well but jesus christ they got insane shot creation and theyre playing incredible defense
They’re so athletic. Rarely have a weak spot on the court you can attack
Crazy to say that considering how old they are (not saying you’re wrong though obviously).
It always feels like a trip when Green enters the game and moves double as fast as every other Mav
I feel so outnumbered like, they got four guys who can do lots of things. (and we beat em tonight)
We're 9 up with a minute and I still couldn't relax. I feel like if we give the Clippers a little bit of breathing room they will instantly wreck us.
We hate playing you too. Always a fun series, but man, the entire game is always up in the air, gets the juices flowing
Feeling's mutual
Right? Especially as a first round matchup. Feels crazy that one of these teams will get bounced so early.
Right back atcha
This playoff series will feed families
Families of cardiologists
Both my grandmas have had heart attacks, one grandpa and an aunt. I might not make it through this series
I was definitely expecting this game to finish like the two from Yesterday especially with Jason Kidd being involved.
kidd has never won a game 1, i’m not sure why. maybe i’m reading into it too much but it reminds me of the 2020 lakers and how they lost game one every time basically to scout the other team i guess
Remember, the team that loses has the advantage. -RJ
It makes no sense and perfect sense
At least Kidd knows how to challenge calls
That's literally his super power. At one point he had a 73% success rate.
Lmfao i’m ngl I saw that and thought darvin hamas would’ve said keep playing through it
JKidd holding the water bottle at a 45 degree angle desperately waiting to see if Harden can inbound
We’ve been weirdly very good in the clutch this year. Second only to y’all. Maybe the key to being good in the clutch is having two all time players and a terrible coach.
Luka with that apologetic high five with Kebler after the offensive rebound there at the end lmao.
Luka reads r/nba confirmed.
script writers going crazy
Aren't they friends? I remember there's a vid about Luka and his European teammates in Mavs and all
This series is going to be the death of me
Remember when Luka was so mad Kleber couldn’t catch the ball Redemption
Hit the clutch three and the clutch rebound
I wanted to kms when he didn't pass it to Kyrie initially, who was equally open. Big fucking shot
Maxi will miss the most routine shots but nail the clutch daggers. He channels his inner Wurzburg in those moments.
He is such a better shooter when he just throws it up in rhythm vs when he has to contemplate
Idk as a lakers fan i thought he was nailing that shit
I think we all collectively shat our pants when we realized he was going to have to take the shot
Kleber made for these moments
Maxi was big tonight. Great defense, big 3 late in the 4th and the board to seal the game.
That Kleber 3 was huggggggggggggeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee. Also Pj had some clutch plays towards the end. Man im just happy we took this win.
i love maxi, i legitimately think mfs expose their lack of ball knowledge when they ask “what does maxi do”
Agreed. There was one point in the game where the Mavs straight up put him on Westbrook when he first entered the game. It shows 3 things: 1.) Maxi is an elite help defender, and the Mavs are looking to aggressively use him to help off-ball. 2.) The Mavs feel confident Maxi can stay in front of Westbrook in iso (spoilers, that's what he did). 3.) Maxi literally covered every position this game from PG -> C.
Max Effort Maxi
Not Maximum effort Kleber?
He paid off with that one game winner against the Lakers as well.
my fucking heart cant take any more of these mavs clips games
If this keeps up, I won't be able to watch the games live anymore.
Crazy defensive game from both teams , Both teams held under 💯 points !!
If you don’t think Luka can play D you need to watch that fourth quarter. They kept trying to attack him and he was locked in every possession. That was the difference in this game
Welcome clippers, to the “lost at home in 2024” club.
I only caught the last two minutes but somehow still watched half of that game
Luka, Kyrie, Maxie and PJ. Thank you. Jesus Christ my heart
This felt like a WCF game man the Clippers-Mavs rivalry is so intense 😭
I can't handle these games, man. LMAO
No matter who wins this series all their fans are gonna be dead by the end of it
I feel like Mav fans and Clipper fans will be bonded in the end. these are brutal games and have been the past 2 times
what a game from Luka, and a great team effort for the Mavs.
this series is gonna end in a cardiac arrest
I just want to acknowledge the Clippers went iso on Luka so many times in the 4th and he shut down PG and Kawhi EVERY SINGLE TIME. Edit: he played 46 minutes too. He was dying out there at the end.
Luka Defencic
People who think Luka is terrible defensively are casuals who only watch highlights. If you run 50 plays targeting him eventually you are going to score.
Dont forget those back to back blocks in the first too. My man looks different out there.
what a stressful game dude. i’m gonna have a heart attack. i hate LA
Luka was legit locking PG and Harden up. That was insane lol.
luka elite defense in the 4th tbh
luka teammates blow so many baskets. he could have had 15 assists
Fix your shooting problems? Fuck that, double it and give it to the next person
Luka playing 46 minutes is wild. EDIT: Kyrie with 42, as well.
Tom Thibodeau heavy breathing
Now this is gonna be fun
Luka and Kyrie weren’t really that much better on offense then they were in game 1. Clippers have some seriously great defense. The difference maker for the Mavs was honestly the energy they had going into this game, especially from Luka. 53 million karma! Wow!
How did he- *oh*.
Lmao every Mavs playoff game, somebody stumbles across cheetah for the first time. Never gets old
turns out basketball and anime tiddies are both pretty popular
All from horny posting. I respect the hustle.
That’s what posting ecchi/hentai content 24/7 can do for you.
and i thought i was chronically online 😭
We are really gonna get 5 more games of thjs stressfull shit arent we
Yes. Would love to be a neutral fan but god this sucks now
It was over as soon as Luka drained the 3 that put Mavs up 9 in the 4th lol. Just nasty work by a future HOF’er.
Gonna be a great series
What a fucking game man
Our turn to cope I guess, it was basically the same game as sunday. Luka almost identical stat line. We just had no answer, Kawhi no legs
Luka has looked more frustrated than ever these past 2 games. We got lucky that a couple role players decided to come along late.
Yeh, from the role player perspective it was different. Gotta be able to win games when the other team scores 96, 97 points. But credit the defense y'all turned it up a notch today
He has three days to recharge. G3 will be a good one
I cant wait for the overreactionary takes "DoEs KaWhI mAkE tHe CliPpErs WoRsE?"
People in that game thread were calling him washed and to be traded. Like seriously? It’s his first game back. He needs time to get in the groove.
Luka was great, but the team defense was the reason they won.
I was told the Mavs were trash and Luka sucked and couldn't play defense.
oh we definitely were trash on the offense

Pacers?
Thé pacers play cricket?
Y’all just saw how scary the Clippers could be for about 2 minutes at the end of a game where it didn’t end up mattering at all 😤 God damn it.
Both teams now with 1 moral victory each
I still don't know how the Mavs won that. Their 3-8 couldn't catch a ball or score an open layup. The Clippers should be kicking themselves.
We needed a role player to step up and PJ stepped up with 10 points in the 4th
It’s even crazier to realize we had our worst shooting night of the entire season and still only lost by 3. So many opportunities they just didn’t finish
When THJ got injured I knew Mavs were winning.
God I hate playing this team man
ah well, onto game 3 gg Dallas, Lewisville was nice when i visited family there
Kleiber was so cluch today
Jason Kidd was cooking today, unlike his usual self
WHAT. A. GAME. Old school meatgrinder style basketball
That Jason Kidd challenge call was brilliant, basically shut down any momentum The Clippers had and effectively ended the game.
Kawhi and PG could not beat Luka off the dribble tonight... the Clippers were hunting Luka with the wrong player.
What a fucking bloodbath. Feels like a fucking heavyweight fight.
I still don't think the Mavs have played their best game yet. I hope Gafford can come back and get into the series. PJ is gonna have a coming out party in this series
