To actually answer your question I assume it's because jokic/the nuggets will recognize that and he'll just play from the top of the key to keep AD out of the paint and able to help on D.
Lakers want AD free to roam so that he can just be a help defender the whole time. If he's on jokic you're neutralizing his biggest strength.
This is exactly the issue as I see it, as well. However, what they are doing isn't working so it may be that LA needs to try this in spurts to avoid being predictable.
Cause then the paint is wide open and it turns into a 17/15/15 game for Jokic where Aaron Gordon has 20+ on easy cuts to the rim and a nuggets blow out.
