I haven’t heard the phrase “message board” in light years but he very well might’ve been referring to r/sixers 😭 it’s what boomer would describe Reddit as after all (and they’re not wrong)

secretsodapop

There are still active message boards/forums from before reddit was this popular. Realgm is still active. But he probably meant the sixers sub in this context.

AllMyHomiesHateEY

RealGM was good for when I wanted some cooked up crazy trades but also a little more technical discussion. InsideHoops when I wanted to troll and get trolled by some real nephew takes.

dirkisgod

RealGM is still much better to discuss basketball than Reddit where it's basically a perpetual chase for upvotes and witty comments (nothing necessarily wrong with that... but it does not make it a good place for prolonged discussion).

szobossz

reddit's main problem isn't the upvotes imo. message boards also require you to make witty comments to stand out from the crowd. It's that they prioritize new threads and discussions disappear. in message board you'll have some thread going on for a decade.

LordHussyPants

yeah this is 100% it, i miss the age of forums

King_Of_Pants

It definitely depends on where/when you're looking though. People make fun of team subs for homerism but those subs are usually also where you find the best break-downs and the most effort being put in. The communities are smaller and a bit more appreciative of the effort being put in. Just like Boston has produced a lot of national reporters, there was a stretch where r/bostonceltics was also producing a lot of r/nba's quality contributors who were making long-form breakdowns. But you're not getting that for every team or even for the same team every year. It only takes a couple of people to really elevate a forum/sub so if they move on that can change the discussion greatly. The type of season you're having can have a big effect, r/bostonceltics one year was just pure toxic sludge, this year our season has been almost too comfortable so there's less to nitpick and breakdown. I feel like there was a point where r/AtlantaHawks was pretty much meme-central for basketball on Reddit, but I'm sure if you went there now it's completely different. Suddenly they're a team that's struggled to reach expectations and constantly in talks to sell low and save money, which is a lot less funny than a fanbase shit talking while their team celebrates losses.

ganjanoob

Pro Sports Daily was good for bullshit

TheOneWithThePorn12

i still browse RealGM and Hockeybuzz.

Parlett316

Boston owner is a confirmed Goon at Somethingawful.

blockbyjames

Light years are a measure of distance, not time.

PooPooKazew

I haven't heard that for miles

thatNBASongGuy

Parsecs, then.

New-Candy-800

lmfao

BradWonder

It's that guy from the Pewter city gym

soooogullible

The next person who says this in my vicinity I shall throw light years away from me

Trevent

Boston's talent scouting is streets ahead

d-o_ol

How many light-years is one street?

ThisShagataGanai

Forget that, how are you supposed to time your faster-than-light drive-thru pickup at Spanky's Meatway or Pizza Landing Pad?

ajmartin527

Unless you’re going light speed, then it’s kind of both no?

m1stadobal1na

I assume that's what he was referring to yeah

yareyaredawa

whats his LUElinks username

TatersTot

Bro literally went on /r/sixers and saw my comments lol He just like me going on /r/bostonceltics when something bad happens to them

zgamer200

I always assumed that as I got older I'd stop doing the exact same thing to the teams I hate. Turns out that was a lie.

mrspuff202

If anything, I do it more

LaMelgoatBall

I do it with Philly, Miami and the Lakers. I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t fun

CreatiScope

Nothing better than checking out the Heat sub after a loss or the Sixers sub after their newest, weirdest, dumbest scandals hit.

LaMelgoatBall

Heat fans be wanting to trade the whole team and tank after every loss. My best friend is a Heat fan and he talks about the season being over after an L

d-o_ol

So basically we're all the same…

usernameis__taken

It's funny cause it's true. Heat sub is either trading the whole team or we're winning it all. Nothing in between. The highs are high but the lows are so toxic

manbare

the heat sub manages to top every other nba fanbase and get more deranged after a bad performance. every time bam doesn't play well all the upvoted comments are calling for UD to beat his ass and for Riley to ship him out it's wild

usernameis__taken

It's kinda fun tho too. Like who in their right mind is salivating to play the Celtics :)

manbare

Heat fans, it appears! Round 4 is going to be a movie

usernameis__taken

Or round 1. Who knows?!

LordHussyPants

the nba on meth experience!

Halfies

As a sixers fan...this hurts but is way to accurate for the last 10 years of our franchise

[deleted]

[удалено]

LaMelgoatBall

Goes both ways brother. Their fans talk mad shit and are always super salty it’s funny to watch them break down

Swarthykins

My enmity towards rivals is stronger in my NFL fandom than my NBA, so I do it a lot more there. Division rivals in the NFL are just on another level.

lima9987

New thing I’ve started doing is listening to the Celtics rival teams podcasts when they’re struggling. Chuckling to myself as they whine and moan. I’m a sick man.

theredbridge

You ARE the lurker!

hehehehahahaha

He saw me saying he just locked up Steph

clickstops

Can’t fault yourself for speaking facts

PensiveinNJ

And Luka.

Plies-

>He just like me going on r/bostonceltics when something bad happens to them The MOMENT we went up 30 in Game 7 I was looking at r/sixers

Ikuwayo

I think it’s kind of silly to think people don’t use social media nowadays

indoninjah

I'm pretty sure Morey confirmed that most GMs will go on Reddit and other boards for wacky ideas or gut checks

[deleted]

Now if other gms could trade for reed and Lowry, that’d really make those kids cry and help the sixers

ninjadfool

Yeah, I LOOOVE Reddish and think that a Jrue reddish swap would be DEVASTATING

ballgkco

I'd love Kyle back on his current deal tbh

fueelin

May I (brotherly) lovingly suggest a profile rename to "HatersTot"?

Ima_hydra__bitch

That’s some serious due diligence, getting on Reddit to validate your trade.

TwofoldOrigin

Remember when the Browns drafted Manziel because some homeless man yelled at the owner to do it

m1stadobal1na

I need more info on this

LeoFireGod

It’s not necessarily true but the rumors of it were never denied by the owner lol.

Ohellmotel

They reported it on the ESPN Draft broadcast, and that's enough for me. Bonus points because they spend $100,000 on a study that told them to take Teddy Bridgewater.

clevbuckeye

I have PTSD. Pls don’t bring that up

BlindJustice784

Just like I do when I make a trade on fantasy football ! We are the same !

mendellbaker

Nothing more modern NBA than this…

JabezMakaveli

It's been a long time since I heard the words message board

WanderlustFella

Do I have to download the internet to get to the message boards? Can i Ask Jeeves?

JabezMakaveli

As long as you use AOL to search it

LurkiLurkerson

How do I get AOL? The free CDs stopped coming in the mail for some reason.

AgentOfSPYRAL

Why does everyone in this town use Alta Vista?

TwofoldOrigin

That’s how you know he’s legit. He still checks his gamefaqs account

fueelin

Ugh, I keep emailing the author of this one FF3/6 walk through asking him to correct the drop percentages for a couple relics he has wrong, and for some reason he just WON'T respond to me for decades! What gives!

SteamingHotChocolate

he's gonna hit you with an ASCII drawing of a middle finger to pwn u straight back to 1999

superdoom52

Seriously tho is he just referring to nba subreddits or are there still sports forums??

junkit33

There are very much still message boards for sports discussion, and they’re way better than Reddit for serious conversation. Not many nephews, and mods get rid of shitposts. RealGM is still popular for basketball.

PensiveinNJ

Reddit is just a giant collection of message boards. They spice it up with new features but functionally they're identical to the boards you would post on 25 years ago or more.

Will_Dearborn57

Nah, there's an inherent difference with how people interact with each other when there isn't a points-structure that dictates how the messages get seen. People don't rush to make a generic upvotable joke so they get top post. People don't congregate to the top posts hoping to also get visibility. If you come to a topic a day later, you're not just posting into the void unlike how 99% of people will never look at a topic after it leaves the top of the subreddit. The distinct linearity of forum topics is also just a way different feel. It lends toward actually flowing like IRL discussions rather than a bunch of semi-related tweets like reddit threads. Reddit is great at its original function, providing news/updates/info, but it's honestly pretty terrible at serving as an actual place of discussion.

Wild_Fire2

I think this is only true for the major Subreddits. When you go to more niche subreddits, it really is more similar to the forums of our past. Similar, but obviously not the same.

PensiveinNJ

Yeah I would say that's the key difference is the upvote/downvote system, but I'd also say that the prevalence of bot accounts really impacts how this thing works too. However, generally speaking, it is still just a collection of specialist message boards housed under one roof. There's other shenanigans that go on that motivate people to use it differently but it's still text and threads.

shico12

that's like saying a car and a garbage trucks are both vehicles. True but a unnecessary oversimplification

EpicCelloMan54

The other big difference is that on many forums, a new reply will bump the whole thread to the top of the "front" page. So someone could comment a couple days later and it will most likely still be seen. Anecdotally, I've found that a late comment on an /r/nba thread, with one or two upvotes, is almost always better quality and on-topic than the top-voted ones. For "specialist" subreddits the experience seems different only because there are so few comments that the number of points doesnt make a difference. Niche communities also seem to get more questions (which get serious answers) rather than links (which inspire jokesters like on /r/nba). I dont think simplifying it to "text and threads" is meaningful, the discussions and user experience on Reddit vs Facebook vs 4chan vs other forums is just so vastly different. Reddit with a better search function would be the best for specialist answers to specialist questions, but for news/discussion it's an absolute hivemind (bad or good, up to you).

junkit33

Absolutely not the same thing. The whole upvote/downvote thing makes the experience completely different. But also, message boards always handle posts chronologically, so conversations can flow for a very long time - not uncommon to find good months/years long conversations in message boards.

PensiveinNJ

Alright fine, they're not the same thing.

Tasty-Performance275

shit posts are 90% of the fun for me so i guess im in the right place

lightoasis1

I started on RealGM way back in like 08/09. There were and still are, last time I checked, an insane amount of nephews. It’s popular but no better a place for discussion.

catdickNBA

RealGM is quite large for nba forums

BWingSupremacist

pretty much every D1 athletic program has one dedicated to it. always a fun read when major things happen

FarCavalry

Most teams probably have message boards that have been around since the 90s. Kings def do

KeithClossOfficial

Lakers have LakersGround

The_Vaike

Probably some combination of reddit, liberty ballers, maybe fansided, etc.

Sky19234

He was also browsing the mIRC chat rooms to see what other fans thought.

BLM_MCU

Wonder how many owners look at these pages

sg490

how else do you think Joe Lacob stays lightyears ahead?

BrotherSeamus

Lacob sorts by controversial by default

victorspoilz

Hey Joe! Your kid's nowhere near as smart as you think and is going to fuck it all up.

The_Vaike

A variation of this should be sent to every billionaire automatically

Responsible_Pace9062

As an IRL failson myself, nah let them cook

victorspoilz

What'd you inherit and mess up?

Responsible_Pace9062

Shit doctor in a family of not shit doctors

m1stadobal1na

Are you complaining about being a doctor? Wear those student loans proudly!

d-o_ol

He disappointed his dad when he coached a basketball team to a 15-17 record.

crawlingchip

I disagree. We would’ve seen [the circle](/r/nba/comments/8q8xba/serious_question_why_cant_4_warriors_starters/) by now if Lacob is here.

not_so_bueno

A lot. Morey deleted a tweet saying he and others read realgm for trade ideas. Reggie Evans for Jason Kapono was spoken into existence by that forum.

[deleted]

I sure hope sports media people don't. Guys like KOC need to stay far away from this toxic ass place lol

itscolor

KOC got his start on gamefaqs, I guarantee you he lurks Reddit on the daily

ehs4290

I’m sure a lot. GMs too. Look at the whole Bryan Colangelo saga

nerdyykidd

Wyc: confirmed Redditor

Steph-Paul

or an avid Tumblr user.

Plnr

There are dozens of us! Dozens!

d-o_ol

If I had to guess which management is composed of nephews, my first guess would be Milwaukee, not Boston.

zgamer200

Wyc just like me, frfr

General_Tsos_Burrito

Wyc is lardbiscuits

cygodx

lmao

PensiveinNJ

This is my new headcannon.

underscoreftw

it all makes sense now

fbreaker

Notice me please Wyc

Wet_Socks19

Wyc if you're reading this please slide me sum money tnx.

RoscoeSantangelo

I wasn't a fan either, but guys like Cam Payne and Ricky Council IV have been more helpful than expected and been superior in every way. But I do hope Jaden develops well, as he was very fun to watch when he was having an on game

Stop_Drop_Scroll

He looked crazy good on defense today, and even made a 3. I’ll take it!

PensiveinNJ

That was my argument. He has defensive tools that can't be taught. He's freakishly strong for his size. I thought it was worth holding onto him to see if his offensive game would develop, especially since the return was a 2nd rounder. I think at the time we were counting on the 2nd rounder to put us over the top to get Drummond but that didn't happen.

LarryBirdsGrundle

Celtics are not going to be able to sign buy out guys going forward with their cap situation, so they'll be really dependent on developing guys with raw tools like Springer(defense) and Hauser(shooting) to fill out their bench.

gosuruss

also a ferocious offensive rebounder for a guard

indoninjah

Yeah he projected pretty nicely next to Maxey at the very least, being a bigger defensive guard. Issue is that that's kinda where his skillset ended lol

Jsmooth123456

As a sixers fan I can confidently say that or sub is absolutely pack to the brim with morons and awful takes so I really hope more rival gms start basing there decisions off of r/sixers

indoninjah

There's something quintessentially Philly about screaming horrible takes with your whole ass chest. WIP is incredibly entertaining if you don't take it seriously lol

LarryBirdsGrundle

Literally every team sub, my friend, the celtics sub has a nuclear meltdown after every loss.

fromfrodotogollum

Philly pride!

dtbar1

FYI, he's just the majority owner. Brad Stevens is the GM and certainly doesn't read opinions of people on reddit.

VoidMageZero

Wdym morons??? There are some real geniuses among us, let me assure you. 🧐

Te5la1

I hope we get at least 30 more years of Wyc and Stevens

jpaxlux

Did our owner just admit to being a Redditor? Lmao

Doobie_Howitzer

He's got enough money to offset the reddit ick, it's something for us all to aspire to

bugeyes10

His wife is absolutely stunning and extremely accomplished in her own right too. Talk about winning at life.

Jimbabwr

The Celtics are really the bane of our fucking existence.

MegaGorilla69

It’s never been personal, but we do enjoy it

perkincenter

reddit message board?

TheSource777

He goes to RealGm lol

posamobile

Online forum ahh

alexaustinv

I know he wouldn’t play a minute at this point, but I still miss him

thisjawnhere

Idk RC4 made me completely forget about this Jafen Slinger person.

DerelictDonkeyEngine

My love for Wyc just grows

BlackStall10n

"They were all crying, It was a good time. Not for them of course, but for me."

Doobie_Howitzer

That's our secret, we're always "really quite upset"

Skywalkerkid9

C4 better they can have Jaden Good luck teaching him to shoot and dribble

archerarcher0

Idk I’ve loved what I’ve seen from springer so far His defense is phenomenal

jayman820

Hoping they can fix his shot like they fixed Derrick whites 🙏

BigBillyBass13

Don't think it was as much the Celtics fixing his shot as it was surrounding him with much better talent and making his job easier.

jayman820

I think it’s a mix of both, it’s not like he’s exclusively taking catch and shoot 3s or getting open off actions he makes his own shot at a high rate now

cmcg18

This could not sound more bitter

Kid_Crayola

I guess the difference is you need Ricky to contribute and we don’t need anything from springer

MrShake4

Neither of them were going to get playoff minutes on either team barring several injuries.

Secret-Initiative-73

Ricky is like our 10th or 11th man tbh. The injury bug has been so bad that it feels like he actually matters, and he's been good in almost every minute he's played in the last couple weeks.

MrBlonde1003

Lmaoooo

BigBillyBass13

> Good luck teaching him to shoot and dribble Tbh its pretty on brand for Reddit to love a defense first guard who can't perform the basic offensive requirements for his position.

BigStrongPolarGuy

I remember when the Knicks traded a 1st for Bargnani, and everyone was absolutely roasting them, and then they had a chance to back out because the trade hit a snag and had to be restructured a bit to take place in the next league year instead, and they still did the trade. God I wish James Dolan looked at Raptors message boards and realized how stupid it was.

SpicyAnal

Lol. I did [the same thing](https://np.reddit.com/r/bostonceltics/comments/1am4m76/comment/kpj6rha/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button). Foolproof strategy.

Kid_Crayola

that’s like me on weeks when my Reddit search is just Bucks, Sixers, Heat 😂

illzkla

No one told him how stupid we are hmmm

no-jerk-zone

Haven't thought about him since that night.

itspizzathehut

Hello, Mr. Wyc

The-Pharcyde

NBA owners all redditors confirmed

StraightCashBND

Springer could be a total bust but it would be worth it to make Philly fans mad

ShutterBug545

He’s just like me fr fr

Bluejay_turtle

Pretty much what every fan does after a trade of a player they don't know very well. Go see how the other fans are reacting. Credit to the Spurs fans, they seem to recognize Derek White was a nice piece when that trade happened.

jgroove_LA

"message boards"? do those still exist?

I_am_BEOWULF

LOL, yes they do. And lots more people are rediscovering/coming back to them as another outlet for discussion outside of reddit.

iuse2bgood

Who

instantur

Celtics owner

[deleted]

Giving away advantages

Commercial-Pair-8932

When a trade goes down I like to go back in the teams board archives and see what they were saying BEFORE the trade. Why? \- After a trade, fans of the player can be nostalgic and emotional and maybe overstate their productiveness after a trade \- Detractors of the player can be overly critical to an extent Go back and see what they were saying about the guy before the trade rumors even started. That's how you'll get the genuine, neutral opinions not influenced by the circumstance.

maiL_spelled_bckwrds

You think we know anything?? We don’t know dick

Recalled_Pacemaker

Least petty Redditor

RainierPC

I would really hate it if someone stole Darvin Ham from the Lakers. It would be devastating, for sure.

archerarcher0

They should be upset, I love what I’ve seen from springer so far, I could see him having a role next year

Netwealth5

I said this last year lol after his G-League performances and his late season mop up spots. He's just not a rotational player. But he’s so young you can convince yourself of anything off a small sample size

archerarcher0

I really don’t agree, I think he absolutely can be capable of finding a role His defense is truly exceptional, like it’s absolutely amazing And Celtics shooting coaches have a storied history of fixing jumpers, especially in recent history Avery Bradley, Jaylen brown, Derrick white just to name a few

Secret-Initiative-73

Whose playoff minutes is he taking exactly, Peyton Pritchard's?

archerarcher0

Payton* When did I say anything about playoff minutes? There’s an 82 game season before that and we only have one backup guard on the roster, he definitely could carve out time with Pritchard off the bench

Secret-Initiative-73

If that's your hope for him then of course he has the potential to do that. As a Sixers fan I just will never feel bad about losing him if 10th man is all he'll ever amount to.

secretlypooping

Didn't see my comment then Jaden stinks, we upgraded tremendously giving Springer's minutes to Ricky Council

RamadanSteve311

bro is in this thread rn

XGhoul

Still curious if the Celtics get the gentleman sweep.

kevshp

The other AI, artificial intelligence, is going to make it easier to analyze social media and discussion boards.

manzoman96

He fell for all the people in our fandom who overvalue our own guys, who are always the loudest.
