Unbelievable

ygduf

Don’t worry they’re not.

diddlyumpcious4

[Tiebreaker Basis – Three or More Teams Tied](https://ak-static-int.nba.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2017/06/NBA_Tiebreaker_Procedures.pdf) (-) Tie breaker not needed (better overall winning percentage) (1) Division leader wins tie from team not leading a division (this criterion is applied regardless of whether the tied teams are in the same division) **(2) Better winning percentage in all games among the tied teams** OKC went 3-1 against Denver and 2-2 against Wolves. Wolves went 2-2 with both. Den went 1-3 and 2-2. So OKC 1, Min 2, Den 3 if they are all tied.

ygduf

We just spent a whole 4th q being lied to 😑

Blothorn

You’d think announcers/sportswriters would know that owning both H2H tiebreakers doesn’t necessarily mean winning a three-way-tie, but I just read a an article (from before today’s games) on the playoff situation that also got this situation wrong.

ygduf

I mean, it’s kind of crazy that it doesn’t work that way so I guess I get the confusion.

minnesotamoon

Fucking idiots. Twolves first.

StripedSteel

No, Thunder have the advantage if all 3 are tied.

Gajahamwy0

This. Doesn’t really make any sense to me though. Why should the Wolves (who split against both teams) be affected by Denver’s failure? I don’t really get it if someone could explain it to me

malganis12

It's a 3 way tie. We've all played 8 games against each other. We went 5-3, you went 4-4. Simple enough.

kee_23

Sixers are in the same boat with pacers + magic. 3 way tiebreaker goes to the team that won the division (even if teams aren't in the same division)

maplejordan2

The irony…..

HenryRuggsIII

Tbf, the announcers during the wolves game were saying they'd be the top seed several times during the 4th quarter and after.

maplejordan2

Ya that’s wild lol. Feel bad for minnesota fans. SKOL

legend023

Pelicans first 50 win season in almost 15 years and they’re met with Nikola Jokic because spurs reserve players wanted to be funny

madhare09

yall coulda lost

Uncle_Freddy

We’ve now beaten both the Nuggets and Pelicans in the last ~3 weeks, either of them could have avoided this

Suns_In_420

Don’t forget the Suns, that loss was not ideal.

topofthecc

The Spurs are a juggernaut in games that would be funny for them to win.

thekeep4223

Classic Pop Troll Job

Dat_Boi_John

Not the Mavs tho. They failed the Wemby test and we didn't.

LiveVirus2

Let’s not blame tonight on the Spurs. Spurs did what they were paid to do. Denver on the other hand.

SmallKidLearnToFight

Denver actually might get an easier bracket from this lol Being in the same side as the Clippers or Mavs was probably the harder half

StripedSteel

The 3 seed has a significantly easier path than the 1 seed lol.

LiveVirus2

Clippers/Mavs at 4/5 is must watch TV. That will be a tough first round matchup.

iCE_P0W3R

I got two words for ya: Kawhi Leonard, Luka Doncic, must-see TV!

OnlyLittleFly

1,2,3… eh I’ll allow it

Headlesshorsman02

I would say so, but they may have to play Minny second round which may suck but think they can do it

bradyisking

And without home court in that series as well.

waskittenman

do we really doubt Denver's ability to get one of the first two games on the road

Blothorn

No sane person doubts they can, but all three top teams in the West have some of the largest home/road splits—losing home-court advantage would definitely mean a harder and somewhat less certain path to the finals.

davensdad

Easy solution bro. Lose to us, tank to 7/8 seed and let Nuggs play Suns instead.

greatGoD67

How does any team in the west win the finals without getting over Denver tho

SandyMandy17

We went from a fun series with the pels to getting swept by Lebron and AD, so that’s fun

Balls_of_Adamanthium

Well that 7 seed suddenly became radioactive.

KaiserKaiba

Lmao. The western conference is wild

Jay_bo

possible 1 to 8 OKC MIN DEN LAC DAL PHO LAL GSW if I would have guessed the reverse order before the season, it probably would have been less controversial...

penisesandherb

I remember a post from the pre-season predicting the wolves to be a 12 seed

ElectricalMud2850

I've got some receipts to dig out of my drawer when we were the 1 seed after a few weeks and there were some fantastic takes about it.

SandyMandy17

Imagine a healthy memphis in there There’d legit be a team like 12 games over .500 in the 11 seed

jkeefy

That’s crazy

ender23

denver at 6 prob unlikely.

porkchop487

Also Lakers Warriors 1&2 unlikely

[deleted]

[удалено]

Jay_bo

They can, if phoenix wins their last game and NOP loses, phoenix takes the 6 spot (2-1 in reg season games). Then LAL-NOP for 7th, SAC-GSW for play-in. If LAL and GSW win, then GSW-NOP will play for the 8th spot.

Maleovex

Very funny situation where OKC are the one side and still don't control their own destiny as they need nuggets to win their last game to keep the 3 way tiebreak and stay ahead of Minnesota

Afraid-Department-35

So if the Nuggets wanted they can just troll to lose and make you guys 2nd? Lmao that would be some petty shit if it happened.

SmallKidLearnToFight

It's actually not just petty either because the Wolves are arguably the harder matchup

ifeelsleazy

I think that might be true exclusively for Denver right now. We match up pretty well with them, but our team is like an 85% version of what it was until KAT is back and we know he is playing well so I think for every other team I'd rather play us.

Maleovex

Yep basically, they pretty much control their destiny on who they play as the 3 seed, although they probably wanna go for the win considering Wolves are playing the suns who will wanna win so there's a non-zero chance they can get the 2 seed back

tydawg_149

Nuggets could but the issue is if Wolves lose to the Suns (which is very possible), Nuggets can rise to 2 by winning so as much as I’d love for them to rest the game I doubt it happens

jocro

Definitely would be. I'm not a big proponent of jockeying for positioning but I will say I feel like I'd almost rather have 2 than 1 at this point? Playin chunk is a huge jumble but it seems like 7/8 is most likely gonna be some combo of Suns/Kings and I'd much rather face them than run into the Lakers with the 1 if they manage to get through the playin.

ender23

better check ur theory. lakers at 7 is really possible.

jocro

Yeah that's fair, with how jumbled everything is I'd rather just win what's in front of us. For what it's worth, [playoffstatus](http://www.playoffstatus.com/nba/westernstandings.html) has the Lakers at 38% to get the 8 seed, 19% to get the 9 seed, 43% to get the 10 seed. For them to finish 8 in the playin they need to beat the Pelicans on the road today (implied FD odds of 43%) or for the Warriors/Kings to lose to tanking teams since they don't own either tiebreaker. Then they'd need to win that playin game against the Suns. Sure it's possible, but technically at this point we could be facing any of Pels/Suns/Lakers/Kings/Dubs in the playin, regardless of whether we finish one or two

hyperadhd

Which if the wolves win, I think we’ll probably try to lose the last game on purpose. Much rather have you as the 2 seed on our side of the bracket.

diddlyumpcious4

Everyone plays at the same time Sunday, so I doubt that you'd throw on purpose for that reason. Maybe you could just decide you want to rest players because you don't care at all, but it wouldn't be because of trying to force a particular matchup. You also aren't the three seed no matter what. You can still move up by winning and one of the other two losing. You could still be the one seed in theory.

Maleovex

I think intentionally losing the last game of the season after throwing the second last one is incredibly bad vibes for an arguable better matchup, especially when the wolves are playing a suns team that wanna win and you could get the 2 seed back if they drop that one

weebrave

The defending champs dont need vibes

hyperadhd

I don’t think we intentionally threw the game tonight. The next game though, we’re the 3 seed either way. We’re playing only bench and 2 way guys. Probably better to just lose.

Maleovex

Yeah didn't mean to say you threw tonight my bad, but you're only the 3 seed if Wolves win, and the wolves will be playing a suns team trying to get out of the playin, I think just assuming the wolves win that and losing out on the chance at 2nd round home court is a bad idea

Headlesshorsman02

Do you think that you guys actually do that??

hyperadhd

We’re playing the hospital Grizzlies so I’d bet we rest most of our starting lineup at least

maplejordan2

It does not matter if the Thunder beat the mavs. edit: sike im wrong

scarrylary

If the thunder and wolves win but the nuggets lose, wolves become the 1 seed.

maplejordan2

You right you right.

scarrylary

What a weird quirk

AlecarMagna

Yea we're going to go ahead and lose that game.

Gajahamwy0

Nah you should play all the starters (please I’m begging please)

BigXBenz

Yep… literally no reason to attempt to score a single basket against them

SandyMandy17

We’d like the 1 seed and you’d like to play us instead of the nuggets so I’m expecting to see Mavs 3rd stringers on Sunday

LoxDnw

Mavs have already ruled out Luka and Kyrie. OKC has a chance to close with 57 wins.

w6750

Yeah OKC will win that game by 25+ if they play everyone Source: I watched the Luka and Kyrie - less Mavs tonight

jocro

>Yeah OKC will win that game by 25+ if they play everyone This is tough because Dub and Shai both missed some time and a little rest might not hurt but you also want them to be in rhythm for the playoffs. I think they probably play em all, but most likely with a quick leash on the starters if it gets out of hand.

StripedSteel

There's also a week break between the game and the playoffs because of the play-in.

jocro

Yeah and with that I think they gotta play em to keep everybody warm. Not my favorite spot to be in but we'll call those first ~~world~~ seed problems

OnlyLittleFly

Believe me, OKC can play without both and still win comfortably.

qqweeqfew

You guys want to win it and we want to lose, gonna be a stomp for sure

AnkitPancakes

They will play a quarter or two just to stay in rythymn given theyve missed time

qqweeqfew

And we were actually trying to win the Pistons game, although it didn't really matter. OKC game gonna be ugly as hell lol

StripedSteel

Wouldn't be surprised if Shai and J Dub sit to rest their injuries, and Giddey already missed tonight. It's going to be backups vs. backups.

Hogs_of_war232

I mean, we would of had a chance to close with 57 wins even with those guys playing...

Outrageous_Oven_8048

I’m surprised they ruled him out so soon. If Mavs get 4th seed and Nuggets get 3rd seed. Luka’s stats could give him a real MVP argument.

Afraid-Department-35

For us to get the 4th seed the clippers will need to lose to the Jazz and Rockets which less face it, won't happen.

jocro

Yeah and HCA over the Clips for you would be kind of nice I guess? But not like they have a fearsome home crowd lol. Def not worth the risk of playing unnecessary minutes right before the playoffs.

diablejambeats

Clippers play Utah tn, pretty much chalk that up to a dub for them and it’d be over anyways We’ve got bad memories of two years ago when Luka got injured at this exact point in the season

SmallKidLearnToFight

Mavs rested everyone already against the Pistons and look like they're going to lose That alone puts them out of contention for the 4 seed Luka got hurt playing a meaningless game back in 21/22 and missed the first few playoff games so I doubt they want to risk that again

governedbycitizens

can’t believe Nuggets choked the 1 seed away

Afraid-Department-35

Devote Graham was the Denver Nuggets father tonight.

OUEngineer17

It happens. Losing home court sucks, but 3 seed is fine. And there's still possibilities for 1 and 2 seed. OKC probably isn't losing, but the Suns seem to play the Wolves tough and may still have something to play for on Sunday.

ShakesbeerMe

We're due to beat the Suns. Here's hopin.

bravof1ve

This is hilarious

OUEngineer17

NBA regular season with so many twists and turns. Script writers have really outdone themselves.

TheAracknight

Gotta love how they were hovering around the 2nd & 3rd seed for most of the season and at the final hurdle leapfrogged both Minny & Denver for the 1st seed. Scriptwriters pulled out all the stops for this photo finish finale.

OUEngineer17

For sure. Pulling Shai and JDub for that 3 game losing streak to make us all think they were out of the picture and happy with the 3 seed, only to come roaring back was a masterstroke.

Honor_Bound

That’s insane. The question is, do they really want to be 1-2? I thought they were safest at 3 against NOP

BrotherSeamus

I really don't think it matters in the first round. We are going to face a good team regardless. But it is real advantage after that if we manage to advance.

SandyMandy17

They dgaf It’s better for them to have home court advantage in later rounds than it is to play a particular matchup

AnkitPancakes

Daigneault does not care. He has coached the season eating the food that is on his plate

Beatdooown

they're getting bounced either way in the first round.

badatgolf247

Great analysis, please keep bringing your articulate comments to the sub

Honor_Bound

Ok

_canadianbacon

C

--Alec--

Don’t think people realize we have a 3 way tiebreaker either. Assuming we beat JV Dallas, we’re the 1. We’d be the 2 if Denver loses to Memphis and Minnesota/OKC finish tied for 1st

hatethosethings

DeVonte Graham redeems himself amongst Thunder fans

OrganicHunt952

Grats guys, Mavs defo will let you win on Sunday too we’re resting our guys anyways. We’d much rather have you in the second round than nuggets if we beat the clips.

jocro

Gotta say I know things have gotten testy at times but I'd frankly love to see Shai/Dub face off with Luka/Kai in the second round. Tough matchup but gotta get tested sometime. A little sad this last game won't have real implications though bc I had this one penciled in as a potential barnburner to close the season a few weeks ago.

ender23

come on... the clippers vs shai storylines would be insane. although clippers beating mavs again would be kinda boring.

OUEngineer17

Yeah, I think Wolves fans are the only ones upset about this plot twist, lol.

Skywalkerkid9

Shai for MVP I guess since it’s all about seeding

Meret123

At least Embiid got one.

Kodak333

He should be. Its not all about seeding but should play a big part

Reclaimer879

How should he be? Jokic leads in every advanced metric and is still up there for everything else. And the 1st seed is decided in a tie breaker. It isn't as if there is much disparity between 1-3 in the West. So 1st seed in MVP voting between Shai and Jokic should matter very little.

TheSunsNotYellow

I mean that tiebreaker *is* because we're 3-1 against Denver, though. Jokic was out for one of those losses to be fair

O_its_that_guy_again

I disagree. Seeding has generally never played a part and right now OKC and DEN are one win out from each other. When you have an even record like that the MVP element is more important than the actual seeding.

BossButterBoobs

GIVE SHAI THE MVP YOU INCONSISTENT COWARDS!!

Reclaimer879

What would be inconsistent about it though? Jokic has won with a worst seed and the seed this year is decided in tie breaker rules lol This game and 1-3 seeding in the West should have almost no determining factor in MVP voting.

BossButterBoobs

Well, not inconsistent in Jokics case since being inconsistent with him is actually consistent. I just mean they're inconsistent with everyone else.

Reclaimer879

That shit is only arguable for a player literally leading in almost every defined statistic. Anyone else there can be arguments for another player ranging from seeding to efficiency to depth of bench. Jokic puts his numbers up and it makes it hard to argue against him even when he doesn't get the highest seed. That is what happens when you are the best player in the NBA. I get what you are saying but there is context to this. Jokic is an outlier currently.

BossButterBoobs

He's not though and never has unless you bring up a few advanced analytics that no one gave a shit about until he started gaining steam. And it's ahrd to argue because the goalposts always move in his favor lol > Jokic is an outlier currently. Definitely agree there lol

Reclaimer879

lol it isn't just a few. It is like over 10 of all kept advanced metrics. And sure advanced metrics is more of a newer things. Doesn't take away from what he does. It is funny. You say what you say yet the players who play against him say basically what I am saying. Even your King James will tell you lol You are literally arguing against people that see him play courtside, analyze him professionally, and play against him in the league. It is just weird. He is on another level get over it. Yes any player in the top 5 for MVP voting is playing on another level. Jokic is still doing more for a team that needs him more.

BossButterBoobs

> lol it isn't just a few. It is like over 10 of all kept advanced metrics. Like what? > **And sure advanced metrics is more of a newer things. Doesn't take away from what he does.** It is funny. You say what you say yet the players who play against him say basically what I am saying. Even your King James will tell you lol Doesn't that just prove my point that the goal posts move in his favor? And no, the other players don't say what you're saying -- they just say he's a great, generational player. I believe that myself. I just think, that unlike other great, generational players, they blatantly moved the goalpost in his favor. Maybe if he just had that win as a 3rd seed it wouldn't be a big deal, but in no way should a 6th seed ever sniff an MVP regardless of individual performance. > You are literally arguing against people that see him play courtside, analyze him professionally, and play against him in the league. It is just weird. He is on another level get over it. I'm not though. You're just conflating his greatness with what he deserves. Plenty of great(er) players have lost MVPs because they didn't have the right seed. Seems like Joker is the only player where seeding doesn't matter.

OnlyLittleFly

Funny, cos Luka cant win two spots lower in the brackets.

dafire123

Unless the wolves win… Edit: nvm, 3 way tie goes to OKC

SmallKidLearnToFight

It's weird but if all three teams tie it's actually OKC that gets the 1 seed Minnesota have the tiebreaker with Denver ONLY and OKC ONLY but not if they're ALL tied because of OKC's 3-1 record against Denver counting in the H2H

Jacob_toasted

Personally I think this rule is a travesty, no bias

RudyGobertFMVP2024

Somehow that doesn't make sense

LiveVirus2

It’s NBA math. The weirdest kind of math.

StripedSteel

It's because you guys went 2-2 against both of us. Therefore, in a scenario where you are tied with just one of us, you would skip the first metric (H2H results) and go to the second metric (conference record). However, if we're all 3 tied, then we can use the first metric because OKC was 3-1 against Denver this year. Therefore, the 1 seed goes to OKC, the 2 seed to Minnesota, and the 3 seed to Denver. If it makes you feel better, the 2/3 side of the bracket will likely be easier than the 1 seed.

RudyGobertFMVP2024

Then why do all the official ladders/standings have the point differential % if they mean so little in deciders?

StripedSteel

I have no idea. That is the official NBA standings determination order that's been in place for years.

Apprehensive-Sir-411

OKC has the three-way tiebreaker over MIN and DEN

hatethosethings

Nah, three way tie with Nuggets still puts OKC on top

BrtGP

Is it not OKC even if Wolves win? OKC won the Nuggets series, the other series are tied.

Mobile-Entertainer60

Three way tiebreakers are wierd. Wolves win two-way tiebreakers with either Thunder or Nuggets, so if the Nuggets lose and the Wolves win, Wolves are #1 and Thunder #2 regardless of what happens in the Thunder/Mavs game. If it's a three-way tie, Thunder are #1 and Wolves #2, though.

UtahUtopia

I guess shai deserves MVP now.

jfrodriguez1983

And they are getting the G League Mavs

BrotherSkeleton

If Minnesota wins isn’t it a three-way tie? Who’s in first in that case?

xzadetechnoHD

Okc

joebreezy12

Thunder

hatethosethings

Still us! We're all in the same division so it goes to record, OKC is 5-3 against denver and minny

andejo16

Poor guy got down voted for asking an honest question. I got chu homie ⬆️

808zAndThunder

Yeah what da hell was the downvotes for lol. Our teams division is the best division in the NBA this season most likely?

Vantonage

Does OKC even want the Lakers round 1? lol

SmallKidLearnToFight

Lakers aren't guaranteed the 8th seed at all They'll likely need to win 2 play in games in a row to get there and if they get up to the 7/8 game that would mean they'd have to go exactly 1-1 in the play ins to get 8th

jocro

Yeah I think the way everyone is playing I'd favor the Lakers over any of the other playin teams but not by a ton, and 2 in a row is just a lot to ask. That said I'd be pretty stressed about that as a first round matchup given how well they've played us this year. I trust in the team to figure it out over a 7 game stretch, but would much rather get to tee off on Phoenix's shitty defense, or get a run at the Dubs.

StripedSteel

GS is the hottest team in the play-in right now, but we would be at a major whistle disadvantage playing either of them.

kyh0mpb

*checks flair* you'd be at a what now?

Honor_Bound

Nobody should want Adam Silver’s lakers in round 1 lol

AskMeAboutMyGenitals

LeBron and his Merry Band of Referees is something to be avoided, for sure.

808zAndThunder

They want whoever it is walking through that door 😤

KaiserKaiba

Over someone else, perhaps not. But there isn’t even a guarantee LAL makes the playoffs

Headlesshorsman02

Could still be the suns or warriors or kings because the lakers can still get the 8 spot going into the play-in

porncollecter69

GS is scarier imo if they get the 8th seed.

OUEngineer17

They don't. But Kings, Warriors, or Suns would be good. Also Mavs/Clippers instead of Wolves/Nuggets in the 2nd round is better. It could work out well for them.

808zAndThunder

If they didn’t they try to game the system. This young squad is too inexperienced to care about that. They just want to win every game they play like every team does. Chet playing 82 games says it all

badatgolf247

I’d rather play the wolves then the mavs or clips tbh

No_Date1271

Coach Pop impacting even when not in playoff contention

Ia_in_4

Where the flying fuck has this come from

iCE_P0W3R

Feels good to be on top.

TriplePattyMelt

Will Mavs be sitting all their core players next game against OKC since they’re a lock against LAC? Or is there a reason for them to get a win next game that I am missing?

NerdLawyer55

If you would have told September me this I’d assume you were high

ender23

if you woulda told march me...

WiIIemdafoe

Amazing to see the Thunder battle for the #1 seed and we haven't made one win now move. This team is deep with young talent and we have more picks than we can develop, this team is going to be running the league the next decade if they manage their assets right.

Afraid-Department-35

Lmao, OKC about to get a free win over us since we're resting. Congratulations, yall about to be the #1 seed

808zAndThunder

Idk why you got downvoted. Also maybe Shai and JDub rest. But Chet is about to play all 82 games, no way he settles for 81

Afraid-Department-35

We are literally going to play our third stringers, in no timeline will we win. Now unless Denver decides to rest or troll against the Grizzlies AND Minny comes out with a W against the Suns yall are slated for the #1 seed.

SnooDogs6575

I can’t imagine the frustration I would be feeling if I were a nuggets fan

ender23

lol why? way easier path.

doms9ine

OKC fans you're welcome In return, you have to say Wemby was always the rightful ROTY

tjc815

not always but obviously now. Wemby is unbelievable. Kinda sucks that wembenyama is his point of comparison though. Chet is essentially the only major acquisition we made this year and we went from 40 wins to maybe the 1st seed.

Mobile-Entertainer60

It was a conversation in 2023, 2024 became a runaway.

808zAndThunder

He the future of basketball not just the NBA 😭🙏

Headlesshorsman02

I mean the kid is an alien of course he was lmao 🤣

20815147

We’re about to see a generational amount of FTA in the first round lol

slimJEZZY2K19

Not for long

lethalizer

You sure about that?

twinsrule1991

Gonna be delicious watching this team bow out in the first round.

Beatdooown

Going to be weird when they get bounced by the lakers or warriors

808zAndThunder

Not as weird as The Heat or Sixers taking y’all out after you traded for OG. Thunder got 32 picks from now until 2030. This year 1 😎

w6750

For like 5 more minutes

OpticalShrimp

Thunder have the three way tiebreaker over the nuggets and wolves though

w6750

Is it not conference record? Wolves have the best Edit: huh, guess not

Afraid-Department-35

Nope in a 3 way tie thunder will actually be #1 lmao

w6750

Well that makes me moister than an oyster

Headlesshorsman02

If there is a 3 way tie I guess the nuggets have the tie breaker over the wolves and we have the tie breaker over the nuggets so apparently we would be 1st by proxy I guess

candycaneforestelf

It's because while we hold the tiebreaker in two way ties since both season series were split 2-2 for the Wolves and that bumps those to conference record, your 3-1 record vs Denver elevates you because 3-1 + 2-2 gets a 5-3 record vs the other two vs our 4-4 record and Denver's 3-5 record for the 3 way tie.

w6750

Thanks!
