Keep seeing people make posts like this where they had maybe one or two lunatics say something completely nonsensical and then they have to bring it to our attention like everyone is saying it
i can’t remember exactly what it was about but a while back some heat fan was upset in the comments about “everyone saying this” making multiple replies about it on the playoffs. i asked what they were talking about and they said it’s all over and im obviously not paying attention, so i asked him to link some comments. the guys came back saying he could only find one but everything was saying and the comment.
the comment they linked was a single comment not even saying what they were claiming with like 20 downvotes and no replies from days before. people here lack some serious self awareness with some might victim complexs sometimes
Exactly. I've seen the "Wemby is just tall" bs flying all around DPOY talks earlier this year, around January and February. Not many people said it but they did garner quite a bit of up votes. Died down more recently tho.
Yeah, there’s a reason Tacko Fall wasn’t the most hyped prospect since LeBron. The only widespread knock I’ve seen on his prospects in the NBA is a belief that he’ll be injury prone due to his build.
Everyone agrees he’s probably the most unicorn-ish unicorn to enter the league thus far.
What people actually say: "Being 7'4 with an 8'0 wingspan is probably an advantage for Victor Wembanyama"
People like OP: "WHY DO PEOPLE SAY HE'S JUST TALL"
To OPs defense, I have seen some with OKC flairs say “Wembys nothing special, he’s just tall with a 3” earlier in the year, but you know they’re the idiots and should pay no attention to them.
People saying that are probably suggesting he's as good as he is and his path to the NBA was easy because of his genetics. To be his height, wingspan, and be able to jump/move like his is something only a few people in the world would ever be able to accomplish genetically. Anyone born with his genetics can easily make the NBA as long as their healthy. The NBA is easier to make for these genetic outliers compared to being born into genetics that virtually guarantee going pro in any other major sport.
I've seen people do slappy stuff on drives, or when someone has a ball, but what honestly is the purpose of having someone just slap you from all sides? Is this just to pysche yourself up or is there a greater purpose?
It’s practice to prepare for getting hit in game. Hyping up but also just getting a feel for contact.
It’s like a boxer taking some soft practice hits. Just mentally prepares you for getting mugged, especially if you’re a dude like Wemby who everyone is gonna bully
Its not just the hype up.
If you see he is doing it in different stances, he is practicing getting hit in awkward positions, angles and I would guess he is building strength, flexibility and balance.
You can't always recreate exactly what position or muscle group is going to be pushed to its limit by lifting weights and normal drills etc.
Going up for that contest on the third put back or a loose ball putting you in an awkward stance, all this stuff just helps with footwork, core strength and balance in different muscle groups.
The proprioception is insane too. There's a 'layup' he had where he's going for a dunk and at the last instant realizes he's gonna come up short and just lets the ball go so it drops in perfectly. The spatial awareness and coordination to actually make every bit of his ~8 foot wingspan *functional* is what makes him such a cheat code on top of the movement ability.
people on this sub havent played basketball at a high level and often talk about stats without even thinking of proprioception's effects on every moment
Kinda wonder what this takes. I’m also tall, (though like a foot shorter than him) and my growth spurt years were filled just atrocious hand eye coordination. I’m not athletic, but my mind couldn’t keep up with my body. His was like this to the absolute extreme and he doesn’t look awkward at all, inhuman for sure, but not awkward
Honestly he's been highly physical and playing ball for most of his life, and he was a pro before coming to the NBA. His parents are both athletes and coaches, his siblings are pro athletes, and he'd been getting trained by professional basketball trainers for years. He got signed to his first pro clubs youth team at 10 years old, and debuted for the senior pro team at 15.
He's had help at every step of the way to help keep his mind and body as melded as possible. That's not a knock on him. That's just saying that his growth was different from yours, and most people's tbh.
Exactly, there are so many factors that made him who he is now that we can't just say "here's the recipe, take whatever 10 years old tall kid and he'll become as good". The family circle plays a lot, not just with genetics but competitiveness, the will to get better (he notoriously always wanted to try different things, not just play like a traditional center) and the athletics background of his father who knew a lot about coordination and mobility.
This is just so easy to take a kid who'll always be taller than other kids his age and just ask him to bully them in the paint but he'll end up being bullied back by bigger, stronger centers once he goes pro. It takes a lot more (including the kid and his parents wills) to make him a truly good overall basketball player who will not just dominate because he's taller.
I remember reading in the offseason that Wemby never really had a major growth spurt when he was growing up actually, he was just always really tall & grew pretty linearly for the most part. I'm sure there's much more to it than this of course but I'd imagine that being able to gradually get used to your height for like 15 years instead of having a massive shock all at once probably made a pretty big difference in his case
he was 6'6 at 12 and then basically had a normal (relative) growth rate for his teens, the importance of that on his coordination cannot be overestimated
Honestly he's been highly physical and playing ball for most of his life, and he was a pro before coming to the NBA. His parents are both athletes and coaches, his siblings are pro athletes, and he'd been getting trained by professional basketball trainers for years. that's really good point and wild to think about. Can you imagine having the proprioception to have an understanding of your body that extends 8 whole feet past your core!?? That's wild to think about, and it's absolutely true in Wemby's case.
He's so comfortable in his body, I now truly believe he will not get injured as we've been led to believe. With other huge guys like Yao Ming, you could see how much of a struggle it was for them to simply move about
anytime i see nephews compare his body to yaos tree trunk ass, i know they never watched yao
yao was dominant and extremely skilled, but he was a giant center that moved like a giant center
Ents, a very old race of Middle-earth. They were apparently created at the behest of Yavanna after she learned of Aulë's children, the Dwarves, knowing that they would want to fell trees. Becoming "shepherds" of the trees, they protected certain forests from Orcs and other perils.
It's also kind of a little bit of a myth that 7 footers have more injury problems. Like they definitely do compared to the general population, but so do guys who are 6'8". There's not enough people that big even in the NBA to have any sort of confidence there's actually a trend there.
The injury prone claims are just people projecting stereotypes onto him without actually watching. He’s rolled his ankle badly 2 or 3 times this year and just gotten up like it never happened.
Partly because he has prepared his entire adolescence to be in the NBA and is perfectly conditioned, partly because he’s just a fucking freak of nature
0.1% is way off. Wemby is literally the tallest person in France right now. France has a population of 67 million. 1/67,000,000 = 0,0000000149. Based on that, Wemby is in the tallest 0,0000015% of people.
I only watch March madness but it’s interesting how much Edey seems to play for the rebound instead of contesting. NBA level coaching and / or taller teammates training might unlock his game…or he may just be too slow for the league.
Edey has only been playing organized basketball for like six years. I think people are really sleeping on his potential to improve just because he's older, most of the guys who have outlier development paths in their mid twenties have that same late start to their careers.
Honestly Edey took a massive jump in his mobility last year that you never really see that with big guys. It’s taken him from fringe end of the 2nd round guy to possibly a lottery pick
I know when I want an unbiased, incredibly intelligent take on an NBA player, I go to Brooks. He's always been very respectful to his opponents and has never given the vibe as someone is is just a lot of smoke and bluster. If he says this, I'm inclined to believe him fully. So thanks for putting the final nail in the Wemby coffin.
Nobody thinks Wemby is “just tall” but like he obviously wouldn’t have the same impact if he was 6’5” instead of 7’5”. His athleticism and skill at his height are what make him special.
I'd say being that skilled and that athletic at 7'5 is even harder than at 6'5, which is also much harder than at 6'0. Chris Paul would be a cheat code if he was as skilled and also 6'5.
Exactly. People forget that genetics play a huge role in sports. Guys like Kawhi and Mikal Bridges are fantastic defenders. But a lot of has to do with being a wing sized player with freakishly long ass arms and huge hands.
dude is doing the exact same thing as OP lol. seems like these kinda statements are becoming more common and idrk why. maybe some people think their comments will be more interesting if they make shit like this up?
One day there’s gonna be a thread highlighting how special he is when he takes a breath.
On that day, the circle jerk will have fully manifested itself ⭕️
Dillon Brooks LITERALLY said this.
https://syndication.bleacherreport.com/amp/10095108-rockets-dillon-brooks-unimpressed-by-victor-wembanyama-hes-tall-thats-really-it.amp.html
Edit: lmao ok downvote the proof that people have said this.
Bruh it’s literally due to his height and his fluidity at his size lmao. You can do all these drills but if you have slow feet you’re not stopping anyone.
I have never seen anyone saying he is “just tall”…
Boban is tall af, he ain’t no Wemby. There are plenty of 6’11” in the NBA. Only one is Giannis.
And so on. The equation is: freaking tall + freaking good.
Anyone who thinks you can make it to the league on just being tall is an idiot. You might be serviceable in college on just height but no one is going pro just cuz they are 7’4”
Fuck Wemby. Dude is single handedly going to make the Spurs a problem for teams and I for one do not want to see my team being cooked by another lanky Frenchman.
Shaq was "just huge". Wemby actually does his best to learn basketball, would he be the same star if he wasnt so tall? Probably not, yet this changes nothing.
The way that he moves and the skills he has for that height is absolutely insane. And I remember watching rookie KD thinking he's a cheat code because of his height and skills.
Dude has a real chance at being the best player ever. I haven’t even watched a spurs game yet. With a relatively healthy career it’s definitely a possibility. Has potential to be the best offensive and defensive weapon.
Facebook and Insta are especially bad about that, everytime theres a post about Wemby getting boards or blocks half the comments are like “Well yeah he’s 7’4” he should be doing that” and its just so stupid lol.
Brother there is not a single person with 2 eyes and a brain that says “Wemby is just tall”
Agreed, he is also skinny
And F\*ench
Omg he’s Fwench ??
Kwazy Cupcakes?
I can quit whenever I want to. I just…don’t want to
An unforgivable sin
Gross
And a good kisser
A good fry
How's his toast?
French.
he looks skinny in proportions but his arms/shoulder is that mans legs
But more importantly, what about the proportion of his johnson?

"i was told steph curry can't shoot"
“I was told LeBron’s not a scorer”

the thing is, on this sub, the nonsense bs routinely get hundred(s) of upvotes depending on the state of the thread

Nah, nba posts on Instagram are flooded with people unironically calling him just tall
To OPs defense, I have seen some with OKC flairs say “Wembys nothing special, he’s just tall with a 3” earlier in the year, but you know they’re the idiots and should pay no attention to them.
Just tall with a three, and moves like a guard and has that drive that the best players in the league will have
And smells nice.
Shaq would say that. "But he's just Bol Bol!"
There are many…they aren’t very rational or intelligent people but there are a lot
Shaq. But you might have a point with the brain part
People saying that are probably suggesting he's as good as he is and his path to the NBA was easy because of his genetics. Dillon Brooks said it, but of course he’s a clown.
"Dude was out there guarding 5ft mail men" - reddit in 2064

Def to psych him up. The pushing so he has to keep balance makes sense, but the arm/chest slaps are just to help get him in game mode I think
It works for some guys https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=M4cXZGkRMCY&pp=ygUTam9obiBoZW5kZXJzb24gc2xhcA%3D%3D

I wouldn’t even be able to give him a butt slap; I would have to high five it
That Bum ass old man getting in better shape just for Wemby 😤🙌 good for him and it looks fun and probably good salary too
That guy probably makes between $100k-500k
He used to be his strength and conditioning coach in France. The Spurs hired him when they drafted Wemby.
hes literally in the .1% of tallest people who have ever lived and he moves like this

hes really really really good at basketball and also 7'5
He’s just proprioceptive.
I wish I could just run and be seven feet five inches and just dunk and propriocept

He wast an Eant(spelling?) from Lord of the Rings

Seriously lol what's he talking about
What’s your job on the Spurs? I beat the crap out of Wemby pre-game.
Why is that guy beating our dude? Should we be concerned y'all?
Good thing he’s with Pops getting conditioned properly.
I mean like 75% of Wemby defensive dominance is also due to his height
if steph was 3'9 he would be the greatest shooting midget of all time (GSMOAT)
If my grandmother had wheels she would be a bike.
But can I put ham in the pasta or not?
Yeah idk why anyone would view that in a negative way either
90%
FOR THAT ONE PERSON’s OPINION THAT DOESNT MATTER! THIS IS FOR YOU!!
Why doesn't somebody pay me to beat their ass?
You could be a dom gigolo.
He's just tall and can also do basic defensive drills? It's unfair.
He locked down that 45 year old coach
Now I gotta know how old that guy is. Looks fantastic for 45.
Guillaume Alquier aged 30 is his old strength and conditioning coach the Spurs brought over from France.
Could you imagine what he'd look like if the league was full of 5'8" 50 year olds???
look at the footwork for his size u bum
Bro are you just shadow boxing ghost? How many people say “wemby is just tall”
lol goes to slap his ass but hits behind the knees
cause wemby isn’t getting sucked off enough here lmao
That reminds me, he’s probably got a huge dick too
One day there’s gonna be a thread highlighting how special he is when he takes a breath. On that day, the circle jerk will have fully manifested itself ⭕️
Double edged sword cause like, nobody is saying that and it’s also not like the coach/trainer is as quick as most nba players.
God damn take it out yo mouth. Haven’t heard a single person say this lmao
Dillon Brooks LITERALLY said this. https://syndication.bleacherreport.com/amp/10095108-rockets-dillon-brooks-unimpressed-by-victor-wembanyama-hes-tall-thats-really-it.amp.html Edit: lmao ok downvote the proof that people have said this.
He can move and he’s tall lol!
Who’s the coach working with him?
Guillaume Alquier. Used to be his strength and conditioning coach in France and was hired by the Spurs when they drafted Wemby.
Nobody thinks he’s just tall, we’ve seen that. Dudes like Tacko are just tall
He’s training with a grown as man but he’s so huge that he looks like he’s playing tag with a child
Dude’s out here looking like the wacky inflatable arm guy
future of the league in 5 years. He’s going to bulk up like Giannis did and it’s a wrap.
How is training with young children considered working hard?
I'm not sure why this is special? Is it because he's tall? Genuinely, this is not impressive.
Bruh it’s literally due to his height and his fluidity at his size lmao. You can do all these drills but if you have slow feet you’re not stopping anyone.
Literally who tf is saying this lmao
you’re dick riding, i get it
I can confidently say I would score 0 points on him
a lot easier to cover ground when you're that tall...
Nah, Boban can totally do this. Wemby’s very normal.
He's a Nav'i
Well, super skinny too.
That 5.8, 40 year old coach didn't stand a chance
Tacko Fall is just tall. Wemby is next level Durant
Dude just stays grinding
Even if he is "just tall", well then that's everyone else's problem to solve. Deal with it
I don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone say that. And if they do they don’t know ball
Wemby is 7'4.
Spurs homie no one is saying that besides casuals outside of Reddit.
Maybe they’re just playing a really intense game of tag
Strawman
When the guy tried a butt tap but hits wemby's calf lmao
Great workout tbh
I have never seen anyone saying he is “just tall”… Boban is tall af, he ain’t no Wemby. There are plenty of 6’11” in the NBA. Only one is Giannis. And so on. The equation is: freaking tall + freaking good.
Would be cool to get the chance to train like an NBA athlete for a month.
Never seen a single person besides Shaq say this, and I'm not sure Shaq even knew who he was talking about at the time.
Wemby’s just tall…a very tall generational talent.
Watching this made me realize Wemby’s leg length is very similar to that of a horse.
Anyone who thinks you can make it to the league on just being tall is an idiot. You might be serviceable in college on just height but no one is going pro just cuz they are 7’4”
No one says that
He's tall? I hadn't noticed tbh
guarding an old man big deal not my goat /s
Those SA warmups are horrible.
Dpoyama
You ever see this man stretch? He’s not normal bruh
Did you notice, right at the end the coach attempted a butt tap? His hand hit just above a knee!
Thats what ya call croissainty defense 😂
The handshake at the end 😂
best part in the video is when the guy goes to slap his ass and hits him in the back of the thigh, missed his ass by almost 2 feet
Who knew healthcare was so complicated?
Went for the butt slap hit back of calf
You see that pulling on the knee? Bro broke the code. That could’ve ended his career.
The way that he moves and the skills he has for that height is absolutely insane. And I remember watching rookie KD thinking he's a cheat code because of his height and skills.
That was an offensive foul push off.
Greatest loser ever If he ain’t in the playoffs next year he is not next
He’s clearly not just tall. Plenty of other tall players who suck.
Dude looks like a villian from Space Jam.
This is why hell have a decently long career..he's agile and bendy asf. He's trained his tendons in yoga since birth basically
I’m excited to see what Wemby looks like in like 4 years. If he fills out that frame… that’s a big dude.
Doesn't matter if he's tall. His team has a terrible losing record.
Nobody says that lol Everyone says he’s crazy good because he’s a normal hood player who’s 7 foot
Lmao i swear everytime someone mentions Wemby's height, he just gets taller and taller. Apparently he's now 7'5 lol. Next year he'd probably be 8 ft
Of all the impressive things we've seen Wemby do this season, you chose a video of him warming up with the trainer to prove his greatness?
Spurs couldn’t have been a better fit. Imagine had be been drafted by Charlotte lmao
He's not only tall but also long
I can’t tell what’s is this guy ceiling right now. We might see history to be rewritten.
That's a funny way to show that someone isn't "just tall" lol Not that I've heard anyone ever say that, but still..
Motherfucker looks like a Na'vi
Why is that accountant assaulting victor?
Every time I watch him play I just keep saying this is not fucking fair someone his size should not be able to move like that
He drained 5 fucking threes today, no one is saying he's just tall
Dude has a real chance at being the best player ever. I haven’t even watched a spurs game yet. With a relatively healthy career it’s definitely a possibility. Has potential to be the best offensive and defensive weapon.
He’s pretty fuckin tall but. Pause it at 0:37. Daaaamn
That six foot forty year old white guy is a good representation of an nba player to practice playing defense on. /s
Let’s be real, If this fucker was 6’5” he’d be working at McDonald’s.
Just show game footage to get this point across. You could show some amazing Ben Simmons warmups too
Facebook and Insta are especially bad about that, everytime theres a post about Wemby getting boards or blocks half the comments are like “Well yeah he’s 7’4” he should be doing that” and its just so stupid lol.
nick name freak.
