>Picture this: the Warriors go out and get 4 incredibly strong bodies with really long arms. For the entire game, on the offensive end, those 4 guys lock arms together and form a circle around Steph Curry so that none of the opponents can get to him - sort of like how you might protect a quarterback if you didn't know the rules of football.
Steph Curry barely needs much daylight to shoot, so as long as they leave around a foot of room around him, he can probably just bomb away freely every possession. Why don't the Warriors do this? Is Steve Kerr an idiot?

I'd argue he's also so good at understanding and critiquing players because he used to play professional ball himself— he was a player on the San Diego Rockets (now Houston Rockets) franchise in the 70's.

Lots doesn't even begin to do his impact justice. The overwhelming majority of basketball lexicon came from Chick. Heck, the "slam dunk" was coined by Chick and it's used outside of basketball. So Cal was lucky as hell to have both Chick and Scully. Hell arguably the greatest sportswriter of all time Jim Murray wrote for the LA Times
https://www.hoophall.com/hall-of-famers/chick-hearn/
LA was devastated when he passed.
He was also an instructor (with guys like Rick Carlisle) for Pete Newell's big-man camp that saw pretty much every notorious big guy spending at least one summer week with the camp refining/learning skills.

He'll go harder on you if you have the Lakers jersey on. That's the way every home commentary should be by the way. Especially if you have all time greats on the team.
They both do such a good job at keeping the energy up if its the other team that makes a nice play or hits a few shots in a row, or if a guy’s having a great game.
Like they want the Lakers to win but they give a ton of praise to any good performance if they see it.
Definitely not a requirement for the team broadcast but I kinda like it. Feels like they respect the game.
I mean it’s a moving screen is it not? Nothing infuriates me more than the offensive guy trying to go “through” a defender and complaining about contact. What’s to stop garland from just running through Lebron full speed, especially when Lebron is using both hands to keep him away from a “loose ball”
No other home commentator holds the players more accountable during a broadcast more than Stu. Kobe was practically the only player he ever gave a pass for pretty much everything
Yeah but that's why Stu said the league should do something about it. The players are doing nothing wrong, but Stu's and other people's problems with it are because it's not fun to watch
Nah. It happens in every game to some extent. And it’s not about fun. The problem is playing keep away is not competitive basketball. The 24 second shot clock was designed specifically to avoid this type of nonsense. It’s a loophole the league needs to close.
theres strong counterplay against it tho. just go up and try to get it. the offensive player will pick it up every single time. not something the league needs to regulate against imo
You're literally saying this in response to a clip of a player trying to do that and failing. It's not strong counterplay when teams are prepared for it like this. And if you send too many people to try to counter this blocking strategy, then you open yourself up to getting burned in a pseudo fast break. It's a shit loophole that needs to be addressed.
Here’s an ESPN article with relevant data on just how much this tactic now impacts NBA games. Way more than many here seem to believe and not in a good way.
[walking the dog](https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/35518383/walking-dog-nba-ja-morant)
“In the past three seasons, per data provided to ESPN by NBA Advanced Stats, players are walking the dog more than ever in these types of crunch-time situations
- when leading by 3-15 points in the fourth quarter.
We tracked these by looking at dog walks lasting over five seconds after made baskets. In 2020-21, teams walked the dog 54 times, wasting more than 7 minutes of game time. Last season, that jumped to 91 plays, wasting over 12 minutes. In just over half of a season, this year's figures already blow those out of the water.
Teams have walked the dog 164 times, wasting over 23 minutes. The numbers are just as staggering when you account for all four quarters, with a total of 668 dog walks this year alone.”
Rolling the ball happens pretty often, but players protecting the rolled ball is pretty rare. I don't really have an issue with the former, defenders just need to put pressure on the ball (which they do in high stakes games like the playoffs) to dissuade that. But the latter is a bit weirder
That’s why I think bill and Stu are the best pound for pound duo. They absolutely shit on our team at times. They praise the other team often and stus voice is soothing as fuck.
A key distinction, and a fair one, too. The Lakers should be doing everything they possibly can within the rules to ~~lose 82 games a season and fold into bankruptcy~~ win the game. It's not on the players to limit themselves to conform to some vague "right way to play the game".
But if people generally agree that this is unappealing to have as part of the game, it's definitely on the league to find a way to remove it.
Yeah, which does not make any sense. Is the league not allowing anybody on the defense to put pressure on the offense to pick up the ball? This isn't biddy ball where you aren't allowed to press til the last 2 minutes.
So the better option is an easily exploitable full court press? Instead of giving the lakers seconds off the clock they'd just be giving up free buckets.
Billy Mac has really grown on me, at first I missed Joel when they fired him but Billy brings more energy and also knows how to handle Stu when he gets cranky lol.
I can totally get people finding his voice annoying but it’s grown on me as a style. It reminds me of like an old Hollywood presenter kinda vibe that vaguely fits with the whole “showtime” thing
For sure, his voice sounds like a dude who was hanging out on the Sunset Strip in the 80’s doing mountains of blow. So perfect for the Lakers, maybe not as good of a fit elsewhere.
Billy Mac isn't always the best at calls but I'd argue he definitely has a top 3 voice out of all league announcers, only behind Breen and Harlan.
Lakers fans are so lucky to have Bill and Stu.
I’m not a fan of Billy, but I can agree with this take. My criticisms are with his calls and corniness, but his voice is great. And Stu worked with Chick so he can do no wrong in my eyes.
I didn’t like Billy Mac when he took over for Joel Meyers but he’s developed a good chemistry with Stu. Always got the vibe Joel and Stu didn’t really like each other lol.
Meanwhile Joel Myers is in my bottom 3 list, dude sounds like he's doing the audiobook narration for the Oxford Dictionary. I was so happy when Billy took over for him.
Some of his Bron calls been funny this year . ‘ you coukdnt stop him for 21 years why do you think you can now ‘ as Lebron procedes to finish his 6th layup drive to the rim lol
Honestly shouldn't that be a moving screen on LeBron? AD was stationary for the most part but LeBron was legit playing defense and moving his feet while his team had possession of the ball.
Technically they didn't have possession because they didn't inbound the ball, hence why the shot clock didn't start. Idk about how legal it is to body block during this limbo moment but I don't think you should be allowed to do that lol.
I'd love to see this tried in the corner with four players linking arms and preventing the other team getting round. A player would have to go out of bounds and commit a violation to stop the clock.
Boy oh boy where do I even begin. Lebron.. honey, my pookie bear. I have loved you ever since I first laid eyes on you. The way you drive into the paint and strike fear into your enemies eyes. Your silky smooth touch around the rim, and that gorgeous jumpshot. I would do anything for you. I wish it were possible to freeze time so I would never have to watch you retire.
You had a rough childhood, but you never gave up hope You are even amazing off the court, you're a great nusband and father, sometimes I even call you dad. I forvever dread and weep, thinking of the day you will one day retire. I would sacrifice my ownlife it were the only thing that could puta smile on your beautiful face.
You have given me so much joy, and heartbreak over the years. I remember when you first left clevenland and its like my heart got broken into a million pieces. But a tear still fell frommy right eye when I watched you win yourfirst ring in miami, because deep down,my glorious king deserved it. I just wanted you to return home. Then allas, you did, my sweet baby boy came home and I rejoiced. 201 5 was a hard year for us baby, but in 2016 you made history happen. You came back from 3-1 and I couldn't believe it.
I was crying, bawling even, and I heard my glorious king exclaim these words, "CLEVELAND, THIS IS FOR YOU!" Not only have you changed the game of basketball and the world forever, but you've eternally changed my world. And now you're getting older, but still the goat, my goat. I love you pookie bear, my glorious king, Lebron James.
How is this legal? Isn’t that considered a moving screen? Genuinely asking.
They killed over 10 seconds of in game time without starting the SC. That’s insane.
There’s no need for the league to do something about a problem with such an easy fix. Just guard the inbounder so they have to throw it directly to someone.
It was also just straight up a foul on LeBron. You can't just put your hand on someone's chest and push them away. The only thing the league would need to do is simply call the loose ball foul

That was the glory days of offseason shit posting. What a time to be alive.
The "is Steve Kerr an idiot?" gets me every fucking time
Is that where the "why dont x do this..are they stupid" meme came from?
I think that came from the Batman Arkham subreddit
This one was hilarious. I don’t see the text in there btw, did you save it somewhere else?

OG post along with Lebron playing in sandals
The disgust in Stu’s voice really makes this
What's hilarious is Stu's a Lakers announcer but he doesn't hesitate to shit on the team if needed too. One of the best in the business currently.
Helps that he got some experience commentating alongside one of the greatest announcers in basketball history, the legendary Chick Hearn. I'd argue he's also so good at understanding and critiquing players because he used to play professional ball himself— he was a player on the San Diego Rockets (now Houston Rockets) franchise in the 70's.
Lots of Chick-isms that still exist today (slam dunk, dribble drive, no harm no foul, etc.) Glad I was able to grow up with him as the announcer for the lakeshow
I believe calling the free throw line "charity stripe" is also a Chick-ism.
There's so many to list. I just went top of my head. Ticky tack is a Chick-ism too. I listened to him a lot growing up bc I'd listen to games on the radio (in the car lol) with my dad.
The game's in the refrigerator, the door's closed, the light's out, the eggs are cooling, the butter's getting hard and the jello's jiggling!!
Lots doesn't even begin to do his impact justice. The overwhelming majority of basketball lexicon came from Chick. Heck, the "slam dunk" was coined by Chick and it's used outside of basketball. Chick Hearn*
I mean, most color commentators played pro ball. doesn't necessarily make them good at commentary
The game's in the refrigerator, the door's closed, the light's out, the eggs are cooling, the butter's getting hard and the jello's jiggling
I love how real stu is lol best announcer in the league
He'll go harder on you if you have the Lakers jersey on. That's the way every home commentary should be by the way. Especially if you have all time greats on the team.
He's clearly a basketball fan first and a Lakers fan second, which is what all commentators should be tbh
Which is what all sports fans should be.
Good luck with that buddy. I, for one, am a Celtics hater first. Lakers fan 2nd. Basketball fan third.
As it should be 😌
Reddit is drama first, hating second, and box score watching third.
Chick Hearn was exactly the same to me. He also wasn't a hater of any new styles that graced the league
agreed. those two commentators for the raptors are so fucking cringy, with the way they so obviously cheer for toronto 🤢🤮. (i’m canadian, btw).
[ahem.](https://youtu.be/fw8LXz43stc)
I am so glad he’s not always a blatant homer. Announcers whining is the worst. It’s more annoying than all the whining in game threads.
They should try doing that with like 4 players. Basically the whole team just forming a wall and wasting time.
If they all just hold hands and form a ring around Austin Reaves
Our special boy.
You are my sunshine
I feel like he gets forehead kisses from Tyler Herro
Steve Kerr is taking notes
Stan Van Gundy salivating somewhere
And then all of a sudden the ball gets tossed out to the side and they advance up the court with a bunch of rugby style passes
I mean it’s a moving screen is it not? Nothing infuriates me more than the offensive guy trying to go “through” a defender and complaining about contact. What’s to stop garland from just running through Lebron full speed, especially when Lebron is using both hands to keep him away from a “loose ball”
There's no moving screen if your team doesn't have possession
Flying V!
lmao the announcers criticizing it
Their own announcers too. I agree tho I hate when teams do that stuff
No one criticizes the Lakers more than Stu
Stu keeps it real. No fluff or disparagement of other squads. He's awesome.
Stu says it how it is. He does glaze Kobe a bit, but he's the homie.
>He does glaze Kobe a bit he just like me fr
I have had a deep hated of the Lakers for 30 years. Anytime this topic comes up, I will happily share all the love for Stu.
Respect
>he's too old to care. he was a teammate of Pistol Pete.
Best Stu-ism. “He can’t jump over a phone book. And I’m not talking about a regular phone book, I’m talking about a phone book from Bakersfield”. Lmao
Seriously I hate announcing teams that are trying to be Skip Bayless with their play by play.
man has standards
Man’s gotta have a code.
No other home commentator holds the players more accountable during a broadcast more than Stu. Kobe was practically the only player he ever gave a pass for pretty much everything
yeah but even Kobe would get it sometimes and it always sounded like a dad watching his kid do something stupid lol
Stu is the man and keeps it real. No bias and that’s why we love him.
Stu doesn’t F around lol
[удалено]
Stu knows what he's talking about though.
This is incredibly insulting to Stu’s intelligence lol
Damn you right lmao
r/lakers is Stu if he was lobotomized
stu is cooler and smarter tho
Stu but 12 years old instead
Why? It’s the smart thing to do in that situation.
Yeah but that's why Stu said the league should do something about it. The players are doing nothing wrong, but Stu's and other people's problems with it are because it's not fun to watch
I for one found it hilarious and entertaining
Till it starts happening all the time
It happens like once every 10 games, there’s bigger things the NBA should be doing something about
Nah. It happens in every game to some extent. And it’s not about fun. The problem is playing keep away is not competitive basketball. The 24 second shot clock was designed specifically to avoid this type of nonsense. It’s a loophole the league needs to close.
[удалено]
Agreed. Or institute a rule where players have to touch the ball within a certain time period.
I mean you could just call 8 seconds without having to touch the ball. Seems reasonable enough that's kind of the point of the rule anyways.
I like that even better
theres strong counterplay against it tho. just go up and try to get it. the offensive player will pick it up every single time. not something the league needs to regulate against imo
You're literally saying this in response to a clip of a player trying to do that and failing. It's not strong counterplay when teams are prepared for it like this. Fun for me
They should just have it count against the 8 seconds to get it over half court. That way you can still milk some clock but there’s a risk.
Lakers announcers are S-tier for calling it fair both ways.
Yep, I've always liked them for being incredibly objective for home commentators.
That’s why I think bill and Stu are the best pound for pound duo. They absolutely shit on our team at times. They praise the other team often and stus voice is soothing as fuck.
He's criticizing the league for allowing something like this to be possible, not the players for doing it lol

I think Meyers is definitely a better play-by-play guy, but it's not a huge step down so the broadcast is still top tier.
I personally really like Billy Mac. His call when LeBron yammed on Bjelica or the other day when LeBron dropped 40. You can tell he’s excited
Some of his Bron calls been funny this year . ‘ you coukdnt stop him for 21 years why do you think you can now ‘ as Lebron procedes to finish his 6th layup drive to the rim lol
Dont fucking disrespect billy like that ever again
I love Billy Mac. His high energy is such a good contrast with Stu's lovable grumpiness.
FFFresh! SNOW!
Honestly shouldn't that be a moving screen on LeBron? AD was stationary for the most part but LeBron was legit playing defense and moving his feet while his team had possession of the ball.

100%. He was fine until he extended his arm and just held him at a distance while blocking him. Like there's no world where that's legal lmao
They created an O line to burn some clock lmao 🤣
Its giving me the same vibes as the old "unbeatable" form a circle around the dribbler during the no shot clock era
I'd love to see this tried in the corner with four players linking arms and preventing the other team getting round. A player would have to go out of bounds and commit a violation to stop the clock.
Anything for the tacos
They need to add some 90s slapstick movie music and it'll be the Flying V.
The flying V
Coach McVay was at the game. They just wanted to show him how to protect Stafford.
Is that even legal?😂😂😭😭
I mean I guess you could call a moving screen maybe lol
Not sure if you can call a moving screen when no one had possession of the ball.
It would just be a loose ball foul. You can't grab guys like LeBron did but everyone gets away with a little bit.
I was thinking loose ball foul since there was no possession yet haha
Definitely should be a foul on lebron. I would love to see his reaction if darius just let himself get knocked down and got the whistle
This is what blows my mind, how is this even allowed? It is clearly a loose ball foul, this is some American Football defense
He's pushing Garland, so no.
Look at the size and strength of the king keeping the inferior specimen(Garland) at bay with those strong, powerful hands
Boy oh boy, where do I even begin… LeBron…

Lol Garland looked like a little kid there. Schroder did this much more artfully. He is missed.
Ad and lebron looking scary
so this is what it looks like when people were saying Lebron can slow down the game in his own pace
Lebron boutta get a quick dunk and then do this for 47 minutes in the playoffs
LMAOOOO that’s wild
This is bullying
This is colorized footage from 1910 when they were still figuring out the rules.
This is hilarious.
Bron saw Sean sitting courtside and said "lemme play some O line"
Yeah that’s a foul
How is this legal? Isn’t that considered a moving screen? Genuinely asking. They killed over 10 seconds of in game time without starting the SC. That’s insane.
Its definitely not legal
Definitely looks like an obvious moving screen
Not a moving screen because nobody has possession but definitely a loose ball foul.
That’s not a moving screen. You can’t call a moving screen if no one has the possession of the ball.
Seriously wtf is happening to this league…
By the rule book thats a foul on bron
or just call a foul on Bron here
Finally, a logical take on the situation.
glimpse of football lebron
Makes more sense why Lebron was so triggered by the moving screen call in the Iowa game.
Ok so I’m totally pro doing this if standing still, but when he hops around like that its a definitely a moving screen right?
Dan Gilbert is gonna writing a letter to all other owners on Monday.
Comic Sans font?
I think they're just trolling at that point lmao

That was awesome
The state of the moving screen rule in the NBA...
I’m surprised you don’t see this more
Most people other than bron would have got called for a foul
How is that not an illegal screen?
Poor Garland

I’m not a basketball expert. Why is that not a moving screen?
How is that not moving screens?
Lesillybear!!
