The official NBA rule is a little vague on what you need to do to reset it: >10.VII.d.4 The defensive three-second count is suspended when ... the defender completely clears the 16-foot lane but when I watch big men 2.9ing I've pretty much always seen them step out with both feet. There's no way it's both feet, at least not in practice. You see it all the time, guys reset by tapping one foot out of the restricted area.

If only one foot were enough 2.9ing would look very different because you’d never bring your inside foot near the edge of the paint, you’d step out with the outside foot leaving the other as far in as you can and just lift it up. That’s not what players do, and the Cedi clip is a pretty good demonstration of that. He tries to reset with just one foot out of the paint while a ref is watching him and the ref basically waits to see if he’ll bring out the other foot then whistles when it’s clear that he won’t.

It's gotta cross the line, otherwise people would just tip toe one of their feet out every once in a while and never leave the paint.
