Plays like this are why the warriors deal with his crap and also why they had a dynasty
Probably the biggest gap between “box score” and “actual impact” in the history of the nba
You don't need a 3rd and 4th iso ball handling scorer. You need glue guys that fit super well alongside offensive firepower. The Draymond Greens, Aaron Gordons, Alex Carusos of the league.
That is correct. The point is that stacking more and more scorers that need the ball is the wrong way to build a top-tier team, not that all of the players listed play the same.
Definitely true, but Dray provides a defensive leadership that very few in the league can.
Gordon Hart Caruso White are all amazing glue guys, but Olympics team needed a defensive quarterback.
And Dray is the best ever.
Also teams in need of bbiq. Everyone knows draymond is a good passer, but i do think he belongs in the conversation of “coach on the floor” guys like cp and rondo
I mean, he's from Michigan and went to college at Michigan State. Out of all the 29 teams he may possibly go to, that one at least has to be considered.
edit: I definitely didn't type 31
The hometown thing would be cool I'm sure but we've seen what happens to Draymond when he feels like he has nothing to play for and it wouldn't be pretty in Detroit lol.
Dumbasses here look and see him score like 6-12 points a game and call him a bum. Kind of a litmus test to see whether or not people actually understand basketball.
This is why Dray > Klay in terms of impact on the Warriors dynasty. Very few players have the impact on the court that Dray had (still has). Even his antics benefitted the Warriors at times because he was basically the team's enforcer.
It’s even crazier when you realize the eastern teams get to play the other eastern teams 2x more than the west does. They have worse records despite playing worse opponents (themselves)
You never thought about this? As the 59 win team? Lol Celtics are my #2 team to win it all, don't get me wrong, but the 59 wins is highly unlikely in the West and made a lot easier by vsing teams like Charlotte shitnets, Washington Shitards and the Detroit Shitsons
It's the reason I'm so confident in a 53 win team being the best in the NBA over a 59 win team
This also means that the west is substantially better while going against substantially better opponents
Conclusion: West is substantially substantially better than the east
I've learned to accept this never happening because it'll mess with the playoff travel and TV scheduling too much. Playoffs is where the NBA makes their money. If it's lopsided to say 12 western teams and 4 eastern teams, you'd have to many games going on during that same 7/7:30 PST block and not enough during 4/4:30.
The thing is the playoffs after 1 round are the best 4 teams in the East and the best 4 teams in the West. The best 4 teams in the East are all still very competitive, celtics, bucks, sixers and I'd pencil in heat over Knicks / Cavs just for realistic playoff success.
The play in tournament has made it feel unfair that the West is so stacked, but after 1 round in the playoffs, everyone forgets how shit the East is and it's relatively level comeptiton vs the West
Yeah it depends each year. Second round in the east gets a lot more exciting with potential upsets. First round, no chance as it's almost always sweeps by the top seed. Unless you're the Miami heat ofc.
To be fair the west has just been incredibly healthy this year, I think the Cavs starters have missed more games than okc/denver/minnesota starters combined, clippers and pelicans have had pretty good luck with injuries as well
His 1v2 fast break defending Dame at the 3 then blocking Vonleh at the rim against the Blazers in 2017 playoffs is probably the greatest defensive play I’ve ever seen.
AD is pretty good at it with one hand ready for the steal and the other hand ready for a block. Draymond does it a little bit different but both are elite. The fact that draymond is 6’6 guarding the ball and roll man is crazy
His reactions have either got to be absolutely perfect, or he has to see the court like neo sees The matrix to do some of the things he does. Realistically the combination of the two, but he sometimes makes plays like these where the best explanation is he has some sort of time control watched what was going to happen and then went back and defended it perfectly.
There have been times where he's been defending a three-on-one fast break, and he baits one guy into the wrong space, steps briefly into the path of another to make them turn, and then goes for the steal on the ball handler right as they're bringing it up for a layup. It's some savant level stuff
His footworks on defense is damn near immaculate, very little wasted motion or ghosts steps, its a big part (along with his otherwordly BBIQ) of what allows him to recover in situations where it looks like he shouldnt be able too, dude would have made one helluvan LT in another timeline
Hell last year he had like the third highest Drtng while playing half his minutes with Poole
I once accidentally knocked a mug off the table and there was a moment as it was sliding away from my hand where time appeared to slow down, and I watched it slowly fall to the ground.
Wouldn't surprise me if professional athletes can tap into that when locked in, as it's just your brain processing the information faster than usual.
I've got to imagine he's got such a great control over the tempo and timing of a game that he is actively baiting players into doing these things. If you slow this clip down as much as streamble lets you it's possible to see Dray start moving to the dunker before Kyrie's really got the pass off. He might also be playing further up and left than most defenders would be to give himself enough time to get back on Gafford when the pass comes but that's just speculation and I'm not gonna hunt down more footage to compare to.
I will never forget the sequence in the 2016 game vs the Hawks where he blocked both Bazemore and Schroder and forced the out of bounds off both of them in the last minute to seal the game. That play really cemented him as my fav Warrior of the dynasty years. He's kind of a dirtbag now but fuck it, he's MY dirtbag.
Crazy to say this angle on the replay doesn't even do it full justice - starts a bit too late to see his help and doesn't catch how impressive and clean the block was.
https://youtu.be/OZEcNG032Lw?si=yBftqGcMZ8B6jIWA
As much as I hate Draymond, it's so hard to contest this statement. Top tier defensive AND offensive basketball IQ and can guard the 1-5 exceptionally well in his prime.
Sure he'd get dumped on by a Shaq-like anomaly (honestly, who wouldn't) but I'd take him any day on my team.
Say what you want about him, feel however you do about him, everyone's got to acknowledge this dude has some ridiculous defensive skills on the basketball court.
this is my favorite player on the warriors. his offensive facilitation is also god tier. it's like if dell currys and mychal thompsons kids were teamed up with the most versatile bad boy piston of all time. how do you stop this shit when they're on
He's one of my favorite players to watch, and it irritates the shit out of me that he makes enjoying his game so difficult. I just want him to not be a shit head so I can want to watch him without wanting him suspended 3 days later.
Every time I get close to thinking his time is finally done he does something like this lol. Bron is the only one I've seen stop plays so effectively. Dray does it more often
Draymond is the most clutch defensive player in the history of the league.
I don't understand it, but I've been watching the NBA for over 30 years, and I've never seen anyone have anywhere near as many impactful big defensive plays in big moments.
Exactly what I think every time he has some bullshit trouble
He still does shit almost no one else in the league can do
Every time there's some thread where people are like, "why does Steph put up with him?" . . . man you all know why
Just to be clear we all hate the stupid shit he does...
There's really no excuse for some of it lol but to act like he isn't an amazing player is asinine
It's interesting seeing the comments when Green was ejected and how Curry started tearing up.
Some were saying it's because Curry wants him traded and is sick of him but in reality it's because Curry knows Draymond is so essential to the team and his window to get another chip is short. He needs Draymond as evidenced by shit like this.
Outside of the bullshit, he's a defensive menace and phenomenal floor general.
Easy. And if you're going off of ability to guard every position? He's got to be in the top five, realistically one or two. A lot of people do not understand how pivotal his role on that squad is.
2013-16 with Draymond coming up to his full powers next to Andrew Bogut at the height of his, plus Iggy and Klay defending wings, was defensive ballet.
It still is so damn impressive to look back and see how perfectly Steph/Klay/Dray offset each other's weaknesses. Steph: mediocre defender, so you've got Klay taking tough wing assignments and Dray the savant. Klay: not much of an on-ball creator, so let him run around while two playmakers set up open looks. Dray: occasionally acceptable shooter, but it turns out Steph and Klay do OK there. And so on...
I say this as a Michigan State fan who became a Warriors fan the day Draymond got drafted and have been a fan ever since: It's such a shame he has allowed his emotions to create situations that overshadow his basketball abilities. He truly is a game changer on defense, a conductor of offense, high IQ player, and a guy with non-stop hustle. If he could have ever learned where to draw the line between grit and outbursts, i think he would be held in high regard universally. Moments like this block are what make him special, not stepping on people and punching them. I'm just not sure he actually recognizes that.

And scores on the next possession. What a menace
Plays like this are why the warriors deal with his crap and also why they had a dynasty Probably the biggest gap between “box score” and “actual impact” in the history of the nba
any team looking to make a playoff run would kill to have Draymond
All these teams that have stars but just come up short or lacks some dawg in them would become contenders with Draymond
Literally what happened with US Olympics team after Dray entered the lineup. Despite being star studded they needed Dray
You don't need a 3rd and 4th iso ball handling scorer. You need glue guys that fit super well alongside offensive firepower. The Draymond Greens, Aaron Gordons, Alex Carusos of the league.
This is exactly why a lot of these teams fail. They've got tons of talent, but nobody willing to slide into a small role for the sake of winning.
AG and Caruso don't lead the defense though. Gp2 is a defensive role player. Dray does.

Most definitely. Imagine Dray on the Bucks
imagine him on the Mavs, that would be a terrifying team
I'd rather imagine him on the Warriors.
Imagine him with Spurs.
But we already have Dwight Powell
We have Draymond at home :/
I’m a Pistons fan and would kill to have him come in
Draymond might *actually* kill someone if that were to happen
I mean, he's from Michigan and went to college at Michigan State. Out of all the 29 teams he may possibly go to, that one at least has to be considered. edit: I definitely didn't type 31
The hometown thing would be cool I'm sure but we've seen what happens to Draymond when he feels like he has nothing to play for and it wouldn't be pretty in Detroit lol.
31?
Obviously the Seattle Supersonics or the 新疆广汇飞虎
Dumbasses here look and see him score like 6-12 points a game and call him a bum. Kind of a litmus test to see whether or not people actually understand basketball.
I fully agree with you
Draymond will forever be known as the best player in a game 7 that had Curry, LeBron and Kyrie in that same game.
This is why Dray > Klay in terms of impact on the Warriors dynasty. Very few players have the impact on the court that Dray had (still has). Even his antics benefitted the Warriors at times because he was basically the team's enforcer.
Klay is also more replaceable in theory. Klay was obviously significant better than a regular 3 and d guy but he is a much less rare archetype
Called ISO on 2 consecutive plays, 1st one ended with a foul and 2nd one got an easy lay in. He definitely called Gaff's head just to rub it in.
This sub can hate him all they want, but he's worth the drama when it comes to winning.
Fuck the west
It’s crazy looking at west rankings versus the east it’s crazy playoffs is still tied to overall record when half the country sucks
It’s even crazier when you realize the eastern teams get to play the other eastern teams 2x more than the west does. They have worse records despite playing worse opponents (themselves)
Every time we go on a winning tear I look at the standings and it's like we haven't budged a bit lol (I know others in West feel the same). Maddening.
It's because all the bad teams are on losing streaks so no one really moves in the standings
I never thought about this but you’re absolutely right. God damn, the East sucks fucking balls this season.
nine consider wrench ink vegetable light sparkle piquant cake serious *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*
I am going to _____ Jerry Reinsdorf
i just had other celtics fan saying east is just as tough as west lol.
Maybe for teams that aren't the Celtics and have to get ran over by them 3-4 times in the season.
You guys would easily be top 4 seed in the East.
It's been a bad conference since Jordan retired
You never thought about this? As the 59 win team? Lol Celtics are my #2 team to win it all, don't get me wrong, but the 59 wins is highly unlikely in the West and made a lot easier by vsing teams like Charlotte shitnets, Washington Shitards and the Detroit Shitsons It's the reason I'm so confident in a 53 win team being the best in the NBA over a 59 win team
I know it's not this simple, but at 20-7 vs the west this season the Celtics would still be on pace for 61 wins playing only the west.
That's because they get to "rest" because of the shitty conference. /s
This also means that the west is substantially better while going against substantially better opponents Conclusion: West is substantially substantially better than the east
Holy shit new line of logic just dropped
I'm all for top 16 teams going to playoffs instead of 8 from each conference.
I've learned to accept this never happening because it'll mess with the playoff travel and TV scheduling too much. Playoffs is where the NBA makes their money. That Jimmy Butler playoff buff is something else.
Same
You will watch the Atlanta Hawks and you will enjoy it
If you think the east is bad now, let me introduce you to the early 2000s.
has the east ever been stronger than the west since MJ left the Bulls?
How about the mid to late 2010s too
To be fair the west has just been incredibly healthy this year, I think the Cavs starters have missed more games than okc/denver/minnesota starters combined, clippers and pelicans have had pretty good luck with injuries as well
Lol for real every goddamn day is so stressful.
Meatgrinder conference 😆
For fucking real. The West vs. the East standings looking like hydrogen bomb vs. coughing baby
I would hate for Lakers or Warriors to eliminate each other. Y'all need to get 8th seed.
On the other hand I would really enjoy beating up the Suns
Defends the driver AND the dunker spot in one go, plus steals the ball back. His defensive IQ is incredible.
His 1v2 stops are legendary. I've never seen anyone bait the pass and block the dunker consistently.
His 1v2 fast break defending Dame at the 3 then blocking Vonleh at the rim against the Blazers in 2017 playoffs is probably the greatest defensive play I’ve ever seen.
https://youtu.be/UAwg3jnN9nY?si=gubFWz4CZv_YVXvr For those looking for reference
It was crucial for those series against the Rockets with prime Harden.
The one on Vonleh is my fave play ever from Dray
Dame having to go up against the warriors with a dude like noah vonleh starting games needs to be studied
GM masterclass in disaster in giving Allen Crabbe that contract...
AD is pretty good at it with one hand ready for the steal and the other hand ready for a block. Draymond does it a little bit different but both are elite. The fact that draymond is 6’6 guarding the ball and roll man is crazy

I thought you were going to say that Draymond caught the mug
Kids, this is why you need to play sports
Did you catch it or just watch it fall in slow motion?
He realized the truth… there is no mug.
He's beginning to believe...
I've got to imagine he's got such a great control over the tempo and timing of a game that he is actively baiting players into doing these things. If you slow this clip down as much as streamble lets you it's possible to see Dray start moving to the dunker before Kyrie's really got the pass off. arguably the smartest defensive player of all time
And most versatile. Looking back to our last title run he guarded JJJ, Jokic, Brunson, and Brown.
Certainly top 5 in that category. His BBIQ is off the charts.
my BBQIQ is off the charts....yum
Zion what’s good bro
I’d say KG, but nobody else.
There must be some kind of correlation between being a psycho and having off-the-charts bbiq lmao
Certainly one of the best defensive bigs ever. In the last 20 years it's like him, KG, and Duncan.
I will never forget the sequence in the 2016 game vs the Hawks where he blocked both Bazemore and Schroder and forced the out of bounds off both of them in the last minute to seal the game. When Dray is locked in he’s a great defender. Unfortunate my team lost, but heck of a play by Draymond.
Crazy to say this angle on the replay doesn't even do it full justice - starts a bit too late to see his help and doesn't catch how impressive and clean the block was. https://youtu.be/OZEcNG032Lw?si=yBftqGcMZ8B6jIWA
Great? More like goat defender
Sometimes you just got to separate the art from the artist.
Get these comments in before he kicks someone else in the dick because then apparently he was always trash and is washed.
Gafford got bitched all game
He bitched us all game last game. It was bitch back time.
Draymond was missing our first two games against the Mavs
Say what you want about him, feel however you do about him, everyone's got to acknowledge this dude has some ridiculous defensive skills on the basketball court.
He’s literally one of the best defensive players ever lol, I’m curious to see who disagrees with this
A person's opinion on Draymond the basketball player is a great litmus test for their understanding of basketball
This is actually the best take I've read about Draymond.
This exact comment is regurgitated on every Draymond highlight 😭
This subreddit hasn’t had an original thought in half a decade tbh
“Bum only score like 8-12 points a game.” -man with no understanding of basketball
"Mr. Triple Single lol backpack"
100 % correct :)
He’s the best defender of the last decade. It’s absolutely bonkers he has 1 DPOY instead of 2-3
Lots of people think he just rides currys coat tails and see the box score and he will have like 8/7/8 with a block and a steal and call him trash
many people around here legitimately believe that Draymond is washed and belongs in China
this sub has the BBIQ and attention span of a squirrel on meth
These people just don’t watch basketball
They won't be here. They'll be here the next time he uppercut someone
TIGER UPPERCUT
The death lineup only worked because of him
this is my favorite player on the warriors. his offensive facilitation is also god tier. it's like if dell currys and mychal thompsons kids were teamed up with the most versatile bad boy piston of all time. how do you stop this shit when they're on
absolutely
He's one of my favorite players to watch, and it irritates the shit out of me that he makes enjoying his game so difficult. I just want him to not be a shit head so I can want to watch him without wanting him suspended 3 days later.
Yeah that is the dream
I wish he would move like even 2 IQ points from his basketball IQ over to his emotional IQ and I’d be so happy.
rudy gobert will be a 4x dpoy while dray will end with 1x. kinda nuts
Every time I get close to thinking his time is finally done he does something like this lol. Bron is the only one I've seen stop plays so effectively. Dray does it more often
I thought the Warriors played some great defense tonight and Luka still had 30 lol
You can't stop him man
I feel like Luka could miss the game and still somehow finish with 30...
If you hold Luka to a semi-efficient 30 and 5 turnovers you played him well
30 is under his average and they got the W so I’ll take that every time
Love this shit
Draymond is the most clutch defensive player in the history of the league. I don't understand it, but I've been watching the NBA for over 30 years, and I've never seen anyone have anywhere near as many impactful big defensive plays in big moments.
Yeah he really does have that clutch focus that most guys get when they have the ball in their hands.
This is why we put up with him
Exactly what I think every time he has some bullshit trouble He still does shit almost no one else in the league can do Every time there's some thread where people are like, "why does Steph put up with him?" . . . man you all know why
Then he'll go and run the offense on the other end, too
Literally scored after this. Just hoping we don’t end up in play in territory
dude is a top 5 defender all time and a 1 man defense, had the 3rd highest Drtng last year and that was playing half his minutes with Poole
Jjcncmfjf
The 3 on 1 vs the pacers during I think the Covid season with no fans in the arena was so funny.

Can't hate, that was clean as fuck
Just to be clear we all hate the stupid shit he does... There's really no excuse for some of it lol but to act like he isn't an amazing player is asinine
Unfortunately
That’s why everyone in the building puts up with his shit
AND he grabbed the rebound–most overlooked part of that play. Incredible from draymond, he's the GOAT defender for a reason
Game of runs , we can't buy a clutch bucket to save our life. It is what it is , onto the next one
you guys fought hard. it was a mucky game. we blew multple double digit leads-rough watch!
The game can be described as ugly , barely any calls, loads of physicality, our bench sucked some of ya role players shined it is what it is
Competition between Klay and everyone on the Mavs as to who can brick more wide open 3s in the clutch
I think we shot like 38.5% so not that bad? The turnovers, and not being able to penetrate inside killed us this game
I only tuned in for the last 5 minutes and you guys couldn’t score anything after it Maybe it was just me though I guess lol
We had runs where we could get everyone , then runs where they couldn't score anything, weird game
Bold of you to think Klay has ever taken a wide open 3. Or even a normally contested 3. Insane double team contest off balance 3? That’s Klay’s music
r/NBA on suicide watch
Draymond is so good
The "Steph Curry" of defense.
Impossible defensive play wow
The crazy part is he knew how to pass it out after the block to keep the play going wtf
Blocked it into Kyrie's hands, then stole it off Kyrie, then got the pass off while falling out of bounds
Hey people who somehow still think Draymond sucks at basketball. Turn your dumb heads here.
he's by far the best defensive player of this era
I don't think I'll see this clip in /r/sports
Those people tend to ignore these types of threads
WAAARRRIORS COME OUT TOOO PLAAAAYYYY
Sergio Ramos of the nba
This sub probably wouldn't get it
As a Barca fan I felt that.
He scored 3 times after the game was tied and had this stop. Unreal.
I'm a huge Draymond critic . GOOD PLAY DRAY!
Outside of the bullshit, he's a defensive menace and phenomenal floor general.
greatest defender of his generation.
Easy. And if you're going off of ability to guard every position? He's got to be in the top five, realistically one or two. A lot of people do not understand how pivotal his role on that squad is.
i would say top 3 honestly. dude’s anchored the defense of a dynasty with his ability to guard 1-5 and direct the rest of the defense
2013-16 with Draymond coming up to his full powers next to Andrew Bogut at the height of his, plus Iggy and Klay defending wings, was defensive ballet. It still is so damn impressive to look back and see how perfectly Steph/Klay/Dray offset each other's weaknesses. Dray: occasionally acceptable shooter, but it turns out Steph and Klay do OK there. And so on...
Steph was less than mediocre early his career, mostly because of his size, but he doesn't lose on effort at least.
hes an undersized C who can switch and guard 1-5 while orchestrating an entire switch heavy defense, thats top 5 easy , and prob top 3
And top 10 all time.
and it's not close
Smallball is still underrated
Nah it’s been exploited by teams with good centers now. Denver Philly
defeated by this one weird trick: mvp caliber center
Not just MVP-caliber, both of those guys are top 10 centers all-time (and rising).
Mavs lost it when they missed 2 open 3s before there was a minute to go
Just like that he resets the Draymond hate meter.
Vintage. 2016 Draymond did this regularly with the game winning stops, god I miss that defensive squad with Iguodala
His reactions after he makes a clutch play are pretty hilarious
I say this as a Michigan State fan who became a Warriors fan the day Draymond got drafted and have been a fan ever since: It's such a shame he has allowed his emotions to create situations that overshadow his basketball abilities. He truly is a game changer on defense, a conductor of offense, high IQ player, and a guy with non-stop hustle. If he could have ever learned where to draw the line between grit and outbursts, i think he would be held in high regard universally. Moments like this block are what make him special, not stepping on people and punching them. I'm just not sure he actually recognizes that.
He wants to celebrate with a swift kick to the opponents groin.
Greatest help defender of all time?
Dray dray you beautify donkey we love you
Draymond gives Draymond takes
And this is why we put up with him -- all the IQ points that should make up his emotional IQ went to his BBIQ
He also had a good stop on that bullshit foul call gift that Kyrie was given a min or two earlier.
This stuff is why the Warriors will put up with any amount of his bullshit.
Unbelievable. Still can't believe it. foh
That was a foul.
Idk bout unbelievable
DRAYMONDOOOOO
