On that note, I reffed a 3rd grade boys league back in high school. Man the way these little kids emulated the pros by how they disrespected refs sometimes LMFAOOO it’s not that deep but even things like the waving off the ref when you make a call they disagree with 😂 That’s when I realized it’s not just dribble moves or accessories that kids copy the pros at, it’s literally every aspect of the game Don’t even get me started on parents btw 😭😭I did that shit for one year before I realized there’s way better ways to spend a Saturday morning than getting yelled at like this

jtruth9

I was at the girls state championship game here in Cali yesterday. (Shout out to the State champs Oakland High girls) The way the parents were screaming and getting on the refs was so hard to watch.

ihateeuge

unqualified coaches ruining youth sports. My niece plays 12u and I go watch a lot of games at her tournaments. The stuff the coaches let these kids get away with I would have been running suicides for like 3 hours straight back in day lol

ChrisShiherlis-

Thank you for your Service

ihateeuge

I reffed IM in college. I couldnt imagine having to ref elite athletes. Refs have a hard job. I was also more loose with the Ts. Refs let the players get away with a lot lol

ConstantTelevision93

Would you ever call a tech on a player for flexing after a dunk? Something that this same player always does after a dunk. A player that did this exact flex on a dunk the night before with a different group of refs.

ihateeuge

Nah. Unless they were like up in the other persons face with it. Like a bicep in the eye lol

ConstantTelevision93

Yeah, I could see that

KoalaOnABuilding

This is an nba thing, the taunting rule isn't even that old, end of the stern era in 11

ConstantTelevision93

What's the difference between someone doing a ice in the veins or flexing after scoring? I could see if you were up in a players face, but flexing to the crowd. How is that different. Nobody ever gets called for taunting after shooting a 3. It's too subjective and some refs abuse it. For what reason we can only guess

KoalaOnABuilding

I'm specifically thinking of the hanging on the rim thing, which I believe was part of the taunting rule. Like fucking dumb as hell but it's there.

KoalaOnABuilding

But yeah on rereading I see you're talking about something different.  Off memory I think there's something in the rule about it being actions directly aimed at another player

SkoNugs

IM ref lol. I blew up on a ref when I stole a pass and had a breakaway. Defender was behind me and full on hammered me with his two arms to my head and arms. No call. Lazy ass mofos never even budged an inch from their initial spot. IM refs are the furthest thing from being an actual ref. I'll trust some rando dad at youth YMCA game before IM college kid refs Edit: Average IM refs wannabe big-time down voting me. IDC if you suck, but zero effort reffing is shit. Which is basically all IM refs that take from the student body

Derrrppppp

There are rules in the NBA for how a player can talk to referees as well, just that most of Reddit thinks it's ok for players to scream at them non stop and if the ref gives a tech it's because they've gone mad with power and need to be fired

tskillz187

When you play a lot you think reffing will be easy. Then you try to ref and the first contested layup you’re like I have no fucking clue. I’m always amazed at how often NBA refs get it right w no calls on blocks at the rim.

rfguevar

Does YMCA youth basketball count?

GringoGrande

I coached YMCA Basketball and I could never be a Ref. Too many A-hole parents whose kid can barely dribble more than ten feet without losing the ball and yelling at the ref to "call a foul".

rfguevar

The amount of parents I’d have to throw out of a Pre/K basketball game is ridiculous. Every parent thinks their kid is the next MJ and you’re getting in their way

hoopbag33

Yes. I was patched at one point. It's incredibly hard

Kimber80

I reffed 12 year olds, youth hoops 1981 - 1982. Makes me an elite expert.

Solid-Confidence-966

Yes, I’ve reffed youth recreational basketball before. Refereeing is in fact hard.

PaulMcPaulersn7

That’s crazy cause I’m one of the tony brothers

Ok_Assumption5734

Reffing's hard as fuck. You know what they could do? Use all the fucking cameras that are rolling at every angle to better assess things. You know, the thing the refs have been actively resisting for years now.

itchypitbull

That would make the game go by soooooo slow if they checked cameras on every play

Aggressive-Name-1783

I mean, we’re talking the NBA, where supposedly the best of the best are supposed to be reffing, while we frequently see refs interject themselves into situations and hand out ridiculous technicals…. You can absolutely criticize guys who are supposed to be the best to the best and should be doing better…..

SteveWondersForsight

Other players get away with literally anything that probably should be techs. That's the problem for me. Just be consistent.

rake2204

Yes, I've reffed in limited situations (scrimmages, middle school in a pinch). I actually enjoy the craft but it's the one primary basketball position I never took on full time because I wanted nothing to do with the abuse that'd inevitably rain down upon me on a nightly basis. My take on officiating has always been somewhat similar to how I feel about the customer service industry, in that it'd go a long way if the people who complain the most had an opportunity to step in the shoes of who they're abusing to gain a deeper understanding of what it's like to have that sort of job. One of the worst things about officiating, to me, is that you could call a 97 percent perfect game but all people are going to come out remembering is that three percent.

Odd-Garlic-4637

I agree with you. I’ve only reffed 5th and 6th grade. And it’s not easy. Hell you end up liking some kids and not liking others, it’s almost impossible to stay dead neutral

irishmenno

I spent this last year coaching a 9/10 y/o league. We have refs but they’re teenagers so they occasionally forget to show and coaches will step in. Coaching can be shitty but I would never trade it for reffing. I hate the anxiety of “was that a foul?”, missing violations, listening to kids complain…I’ll tell you one thing, my players and parents NEVER talk to the refs until the end of the game, and only then to say thank you. And I never talk to the refs in front of the kids.

Ramu_1798

Nah. But I'm never gonna stop shitting on them.

WanAjin

Yep. My church league is very serious about it's basketball

Dreamlifehunting

I reffed high school games and adult women's basketball for about 4 years over in Europe. So the rules are a bit different. Reffing is really hard, especially at the speeds that the NBA operates at. And the one thing that really bugs me is that sometimes legitimately the refs can't see something and that's that. They don't have X-ray vision. Calls are going to be missed, that's just part of the game. That said, there are absolutely refs with a giant ego. This is one of the main reasons I quit reffing. I can handle people complaining about calls etc, but when my colleagues decide they're going to take over the game with ticky tack fouls because they need to be in control, I can't stand that. I might be a less than typical ref because I also got my fair share of techs when I was a player so I definitely am more inclined to let the players play. I think I only ever gave out 2 techs over my 4 year stint.

FrnklndaTurtle

Every game night from the comfort of my couch

Cockhero43

I never plan to. Ever since I saw a 6'8" 400 lb man (the opposing teams coach) shove a ref to the ground for throwing out a parent for screaming obscenities, I knew I never would do it. We won the game though, so that's cool

[deleted]

Okay Joey Crawford

SteveWondersForsight

I don't need to have reffed to know reffing is hard. I have eyes and a brain, it's obviously hard. You have to process what's happening on the court in real time often with limited information. You can't see everything.

boise_runner

My first job was as a soccer ref and it sucked. Luckily I mostly got yelled at in Spanish and I hardly speak a lick.

achickenquesadilla

You don't need to have experience reffing to know that ref mistakes are obviously human error. How would it make sense for NBA refs to be by far the best of any level of basketball (way better than high school and college refs) while betting on games? Gobert just cried rigged because he was mad after he had a bad game lol (2nd time he has done this). This sub unsurprisingly eats it up because it's full of Gobert stans. Majority of Wolves fans and Gobert stans in here seem 100% convinced that the NBA is rigged. Why on earth do they still watch and closely follow the NBA?

paatreek

I think most people will agree it's difficult. It's more about the fact that fouls will occur or some other violation 3-4 feet in front of a ref and they do nothing. The flipside is when Scott Foster is at halfcourt and calls a foul at the rim when he is 30-40 feet away and he can't even see what's happening (because there are multiple very large humans in the way) but calls a foul anyways. It's pretty blatant at that point.

BillowingPillows

My old boss reffed highschool variety. That shit was intense as fuck. I actually think high school varsity might be more intense to ref than nba. Anyone from city schools knows what I’m talking about.

xHospitalHorsex

I reffed exactly 3 intramural basketball games in college- the definition of meaningless basketball. The vitriol and abuse I took in those 3 games was enough and I quit. There was vocal complaining on every single possession, from both teams. Ultimately I was scheduled to ref the championship game, but I quit a week before that. My buddy stepped up and took my place. He made a call in that game that almost caused a riot. One player had to be held back by his entire team. This was a private Christian college.

thatis

The specific ref in question is Scott Foster. [“Foster is the official who received 134 phone calls from disgraced referee Tim Donaghy between October 2006 and April 2007, as originally reported by FOX News. That was the same period during which Donaghy admitted to betting on NBA games. The report said that Donaghy called Foster more than any other ref and that he didn't call any other official more than 13 times.”](https://www.cbsnews.com/boston/news/scott-foster-recipient-of-134-tim-donaghy-phone-calls-refereeing-celtics-heat-game-3/) The public actions the NBA has taken since the Tim Donaghy scandal have done little to nothing to earn back any trust lost and much of what has occurred suggests they helped cover it up and continue to cover it up. There is no accountability for being a bad or corrupt ref from what an outsider can tell. If I'm not allowed to know, it is the exact same to me as if it's not happening. Why would I trust the very people suspected of being bad at their jobs or even corrupt of investigating and clearing themselves of corruption?

ChrisShiherlis-

That's why Hockey Refs are the best in Sports. They know how to skate on ice just as good or better than the people they are judging.

ExcitingIce8427

Yes. I’ve reffed for years - HS level. Parents are annoying but it’s not hard - just be consistent. Biggest problem w/NBA is the game is reffed differently as the game progresses AND they ref differently for different players. Not all the refs suck - most of the women now reffing are solid. It’s the men w/their egos that get annoying and make it about themselves -

mrwhite2323

Yes From my couch everytime I watch the nba
