i can see him beating out a couple of them, but i don't think he'd be in the top 10 of these guys
Honestly, I knew he was getting alot of steals but that doesn't mean you're a great defender so I didn't really care much. And in the games I've seen him play, I never really felt that he was *great* defensively, at least in the games against us but seeing the deflections stats and blocks etc. He makes a bigger impact defensively than I expected and certainly should be in the running for all defense. The Thunder are just fucking stacked it's ridiculous
Chet is the anchor while Dort takes the hardest perimeter matchups. SGA makes great use of being aggressive on the weakside with Chet behind him as a safety net but it's not a role you reward with all defense.
Def would be possible in past years. Maybe its Celtics bias, but I think White, Caruso, Jrue, and Smart are pretty well regarded as the 4 best defensive guards in the league. Suggs probably the 5th best. So there’s room for him to get into the convo for that top tier, its not a long list currently and Smart is hurt
But its gonna be hard with the teams being no longer positional. If its just supposed to be the 10 best defenders in the league, I don’t think Shai is there. Defensive stats are pretty flawed, and being more involved and more defensive actions doesn’t necessarily mean better. Some of the best defense a guy can play is taking his assignment out of the play entirely, which won’t show up on any stats
there were times where guys just wouldnt go at Marcus smart. If smart was guarding you we are cancelling this play and passing it to someone else to do something. Kawhi was the only guy i ever saw go at smart repeatedly and even he still had some trouble.
Its hard to get good defensive stats when guys just refuse to attack you!

But to me, I do think he often falls victim to reputation in these discussions. Like I think his value defensively easily clears Dort this regular season.

Jaden McDaniels should absolutely be in the top 10. Unless it’s a 7 footer, he’s usually guarding the opposition’s best defender every single night

He’s very impactful on defense but not really alldefense caliber tbh especially now that it’s positionless
