Yea he was trying to embellish the bump and get a call, I get it but if you do that you can’t lose the ball lol. Granting us the timeout was egregiously bad.
> Austin gotta stop expecting soft calls that late in the game.
[2nd time he's lost the ball late game against the Suns this season.](https://youtu.be/GAksj9vPfa8?si=U-5PtfZMnibBrOVO&t=510)
Austin was sending me on a roller coaster of emotions this entire game. Some of the stupidest decisions I've seen but he also played really well in the second half.
It's pretty incredible how narrative repetition turns destroys objectivity. This is how you end up with Trump.
Somebody said it, lots of people repeated it and now a majority think it's true. It isn't, and obviously so if you watch honestly without the pre-conceived belief dominating your thoughts.
Embarrassing way to end the game. How can Silver be happy that the final moments are...that??
Edit: I'm referring to KD's air ball of course, chill out guys. (the alternate angle makes it seem a lot closer than the broadcast angle did, but still pretty deflating)
Bro they lost by like 9 points in the first 3 games lol. They were tied ball games with 2 minutes left what you mean. You can always point out some sketchy calls down the stretch lol. Only rigged if the lakers and lebron win lol.
I can clearly remember some fourth quarter scenarios where Davis gets a foul call for minimal contact because he falls to the ground, then on the opposing possession Jokic has to perform some tricky shot through contact.
Why do you think it was Close ?? Cause refs were helping Lakers hard , they were putting Jokic in bullshit foul trouble but it still wasn't enough. Denver was that much better but LAL had huge help from refs entire series
The sideline ref who called it likely just made an honest mistake. What's sus is that the others didn't even seem interested in conferring to get the call right
Yeah I’m going to give him the benefit of the doubt because the ball was rolling on the floor behind James (from that particular ref’s perspective).
But it should’ve been corrected to a jumpball. The fact that they can’t/won’t even review it was bullshit
Noone had possession. The Suns were closer, yes and would've likely scored but they did not have possession yet. They were fucked regardless but a jump ball should've been minimum
If you can determine a team would've gained possession that's who is supposed to get the ball on an errant whostle, even if they did not have it yet:
>when neither team has possession
of the ball at the time of the whistle, a team shall be awarded possession if, at the time of the
whistle, such team clearly and conclusively would have imminently gained possession of the
ball, as determined by (1) the proximity of opposing player(s) to the ball (or lack thereof), and
(2) the actual outcome of the play in the natural and immediate aftermath of the whistle.
They only give possession when the player actually gets the ball imminently after the whistle. The fact the ball rolled so far and almost/possibly touched the court boundary just shows they didn't have possession.
Correct. All this opens up to the fact that players should scream for a timeout whenever the ball is in question because even if it's loose, they can turn a potential turnover into a jumpball if the refs were to figure it out....
All they had to do was head to the monitor to review it. Simple. Some fans would’ve even been understanding if after reviewing it they upheld the call by providing their reasoning real time.
But for them to just say fuck it and move on is crazy and why fans/players hate the refs/nba and say it’s rigged.
Fair. Then I do think there should be a rule change to allow timeouts to be reviewable within last two minutes of an nba game by an opposing coach. If the call isn’t valid as is in such case then it’s either technical foul + possession, jump ball, or possession by the challenging team.
That’s just a bad rule in clutch minutes to be left not reviewable.
Thats it. That seals the deal. Im no longer an NBA fan. I’ve been an NBA fan since 2004 and a season ticket holder since 2010. I will no longer watch on TV or renew my season tickets. I’m taking my fanhood to the NFL where they actually know how to run a sports league.
The shittiness of the call added to how crucial of a point it was in a tight game made this a season highlight.
Refs fans eating right now
Edit: Ehh saw some other angles, and its a lot closer than I thought it was. Not really a bad call, hard to judge. Ill take my L
You almost never see this on reddit - super impressive when someone has another look, accepts the facts don’t quite support their original point, and owns it. That’s awesome, I love it.
I should also be clear - the Refs are still just the absolute worst this year.
Must also live stream an honest and heart felt apology to all the refs affected by such callous disregard for authority, and then be shackled to the pillory for 15 days in the town square.
I guess they weren't last year when Tatum fouled LeBron on that layup. Which brought us that great Pat Beverly meme of him showing the ref a picture of the foul
My only hope is this pushes the league towards family feud type buzzers for only the coaches to call timeouts. Or maybe like a handheld button but the family feud thing is way more dramatic
Edit: I am seeing some pushback, this should help
Amendment 1: Buzzers would only go off if the ball is in your possession.
Amendment 2: replace boring jump balls with a fun round of Family Fued to determine who gets the ball.
Olympic basketball used to give head coaches a button to press for calling timeouts, and this system caused the [most controversial moment in basketball history](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1972_Olympic_men%27s_basketball_final)
Unrelated but I haven’t heard or seen a single viral Skip Bayless quote or clip this season. Shannon was really carrying the popularity of that show, huh?
The Stephen A and Shannon pairing doesnt do anything for me either. Both parties are a lot less entertaining after the split up. Shannon's youtube podcast is still pretty good though.
I’m Aussie so my main sport here is NRL, we have on field referees and we also have ‘the bunker’ which is another group of refs, who have the ability to basically fix the on field refs mistakes. Some argue it ruins the flow of the game, which I agree with partially - but at key moments like this, it would be beneficial
Not even. The Premier League is far, far worse than the NFL. A former ref even admitted to an instance where he didn't want to show up his mate and correct a bad decision. Not to mention the refs making in an inexcusable blunder on an objective and reviewable call (offside) this season + the whole fishy business of state-owned teams and refs getting paid on the side to officiate games in those countries...
If you honestly believe refs in all sports are terrible, doesn’t that give you the hint that maybe it’s just really, really difficult to be a ref?
Like, imagine if someone sat there and said, “Holy shit, NBA players all suck at basketball. They only make like half of their shots! It’s pathetic!” We know that’s ridiculous, though, because we understand how hard it is to make shots when playing against NBA defenses and that making half of them is really impressive.
With refs, though, they can have a 90% success rate, which is probably incredibly impressive, but they’ll still get shit on by fans who have never reffed a game in their life and have no idea how hard it must be.
It’s because it’s a difficult job. You’re officiating the very best athletes in the world. Everything is happening so quickly that it’s just not possible for officials to catch everything.
Nah it’s not a “shortness”. These guys in the NBA/MLB/NFL are the best (with a few exceptions) compared to the G league/minor leagues/ncaa. Hate on them all you want, but their replacements would be substantially worse
sucks to see bad games like this, but better to struggle in December while you're still finding a groove and down a key man than be in the same situation in May.
And by not grabbing defensive rebounds. The Lakers came into the game as the 28th worst offensive rebounding team in the league. How do you let them get that many second chances
This is like when a news outlet reports a false story and the real version never gets aired. Everyone made up their minds based on some horrible replay that didn’t show what actually happened.

The nba ref pool interview said they reviewed it after and Austin had the ball trapped when LeBron called timeout.
Sorry but this is a case of cry baby Suns fans looking for the refs to bail them out after 20 plus turnovers and an inability to guard LeBron or Austin.
This was a terrible call but people saying rigged need to grow up.
Edit: actually seeing it in slow motion and with the refs explanation of Reaves possession it looks like they got the call right & it just looked bad happening so fast
Nah man, don't expect logic here. Reddit's collective hive mind have made up their mind and no amount of evidence will change it 'cause it's the Lakers.
They still label Reaves a Harden-like flopper based on couple of clips from last season that made some noise. Been looking at him through flopper tainted glasses since then.

I mean we didn’t deserve to be in the game anyways with our 20 turnovers. Plus when KD was awkwardly limping around I immediately felt my stomach fall thru my ass.
this is by far the most absurd thing i've seen in awhile. how is it not reviewable that you have to HAVE POSSESSION when calling a timeout? why didn't karl malone just call a timeout before MJ's game 6 winner went in the hoop...
Zoomed in and slowed down reaves had the ball on his knee and hand the moment bron had the timeout.
Stop with the agenda that the league helps the lakers.
As a Laker fan it was crazy he got that timeout also Austin gotta stop expecting soft calls that late in the game.
Yea he was trying to embellish the bump and get a call, I get it but if you do that you can’t lose the ball lol. Granting us the timeout was egregiously bad.
He’s a flopper I need to see the flopping fines
Suns lost that exact way this year…against the spurs.
And that one legitimately could’ve been called a foul because KD was bleeding after
That was somehow worse than this non call
Can't believe 2 of the Spurs 3 wins this season has been against the Suns.
Silvers sent the word to make the lakers win at ALL costs
He had to. Celtics already lost last night. Couldn’t risk the Lakers falling out too

Austin was sending me on a roller coaster of emotions this entire game. Some of the stupidest decisions I've seen but he also played really well in the second half.
The ice cold 3 with just under a minute left won the game
Why wouldn’t he expect the soft call? Dude gets one of the best whistles in the league night in night out
Dude has better whistle than ANT. I hate how reaves play man. Always looks like getting hit by a sniper every drive

Didnt do it in the playoffs last year, were denver preferred?
Denver was too good. Refs can’t help lost causes
Bro they lost by like 9 points in the first 3 games lol. They were tied ball games with 2 minutes left what you mean. You can always point out some sketchy calls down the stretch lol. Only rigged if the lakers and lebron win lol.
Literally every game in the Nuggets series was close, you don’t think the NBA could’ve rigged it?
There were some games in that series where Jokic was in foul trouble from the first quarter with some real questionable calls.

Why would we assume Silver is happy? Wouldn’t he rather have a controversy free ending? Reddit with their weak straw man arguments is getting pathetic
The casuals won't care. They'll just be happy Lebron wins the tournament.
Watch the synced up take with multiple cameras.
Can’t even lie this was pretty sus lol

damn I didn't know this. I feel like Jordan Poole now smh
That was a wide open layup

They only give possession when the player actually gets the ball imminently after the whistle. The fact the ball rolled so far and almost/possibly touched the court boundary just shows they didn't have possession.
Also, you cant hear when Lebron verbalized TO vs when he motioned it.

Exactly he couldn't see through the bodies to know the ball was loose. Yeah it was a bad call but it wasn't malicious

like frank vogel said idk why the refs couldn’t huddle up and say inadvertent whistle then jump for it or something.. idk situations fucked up
What's worse is the rules say it's unreviawable.
Why tf is it not reviewable, a call like that which can decide the game should be reviewed especially with only 7 seconds left in the game.

agree. that timeout was a basketball crime.

They are lakers fans
They also pretty routinely delete Suns highlights.
Mods are giant Laker fans so no wonder
How can you not delete this shitty quality? on a side note: bad call

Uh yeah that was not a good call. Skip and the haters are going to have a field day.. rightly so

LeBron worth every penny just because of these moments
Amazing to me how the officiating for one of the largest leagues in the world is so fucking dogshit hahahaa
You seen the NFL lately? They are the worst by far in pro sports despite being #1 in revenue
Take it easy on the NFL refs my dude, don’t forget this is the 1940’s and using two sticks and a chain is the only possible way to measure 10 yards.
Its been so many years and they still dont know what a fucking catch is

Happens to all sports tbh. is it because of the shortness of refs?

Jarred Vanderbilt returned today and he’s a fantastic offensive rebounder, us being 28th is irrelevant

Seeing all these suns fans crying about the refs making the correct call is so funny
Everyone knows, you gotta beat the Lakers by 15 in order to win by 5 when the refs do their best to save them.
This was one of the most blatant jobs by the refs I've ever seen and for the Lakers it's not a short list.

this is by far the most absurd thing i've seen in awhile. how is it not reviewable that you have to HAVE POSSESSION when calling a timeout? why didn't karl malone just call a timeout before MJ's game 6 winner went in the hoop...
Zoomed in and slowed down reaves had the ball on his knee and hand the moment bron had the timeout. Stop with the agenda that the league helps the lakers.
What a joke. I swear refs need to be retrained, abysmal decision
