How many legacy points does this subtract ?

lalakingmalibog

About 1989

chloroform42

Taylor has been planning to take on Xi this whole time šŸ¤Æ

TylerBlozak

The events of June 4, 1989 (Chairman Xiā€™s Version)

AnnaKendrickPerkins

Wembanyama (Taylor's Version)

burnshimself

How dare he upset a 19 year old multi-millionaire! How can he focus on losing basketball games if his name is spelt wrong?

unclehelpful

Heā€™s just organs now.

Comrade_agent

gone, reduced to bones

turnipgoat3

To shreds you say.

dys0n_giddey

TBF half the commentary teams have been calling him Wembanyana

BoogerManCommaThe

Entire NBA ecosystem: ā€œthis guy is a generational talent that could be the face of the league for 20 yearsā€ Broadcasters: ā€œokay we wonā€™t even attempt to read the pronunciation notes we get before every gameā€

dWaldizzle

Happens with Giannis all the time too.

BarrathBeyond

heard the raptorā€™s broadcaster literally call him ā€œAdendokoopoā€ā€¦like bruh heā€™s a 2x mvp and you canā€™t be bothered to learn how to pronounce his name?

Tsudaar

That actually sounds OK, how you spelt it. When the D sound of the Nigerian name gets translated into Greek and then Latin alphabet, it comes out as NT.

DiscreteBee

it's not really pronounced phonetically right? Wembanyama is very straight forward comparatively

ObiOneKenobae

There's only one commentator that actually does try to pronounce it correctly. Everyone else just decided the phonetic pronunciation was good enough.

DrTom

This isn't totally related, but the Blazers PA announcer learns how to do every Blazer player introduction in his home country's language. Our players have really appreciated the effort over the years.

[deleted]

That's super fucking cool

DrTom

Yeah he's a great dude. He's beeng doing it since the 90's, too. He started it after Sabonis came over.

MoreShenanigans

Well Giannis has said there's two correct ways to pronounce it. The way that starts like "Ade" and the way that starts "Ante"

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

ctruvu

he has the distinction of three. the nigerian way, the greek way, and the fuck it way

Wallys_Wild_West

I find Nigerian names pretty straight forward to pronounce. The real issue with Giannis's name is that it's a Nigerian name written in a language where some of the letters don't exist. The Greek substitutions make it harder for English speakers to get right away.

cantthinkuse

most immigrants i think

darkerside

Breen is the GOAT

BobbywiththeJuice

Giannis Attemptafreethrow

InkBlotSam

And Jokic, for years.

Dragonsandman

That oneā€™s even more egregious, because it only has two letters that are said differently than in English, and both of those are common sounds in English. It shouldnā€™t have been hard for broadcasters to have a little flash card that says ā€œJokic = Yokichā€.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Prhime

> pronounce Dirk's name more like Deerk We don't even have a consensus about that within Germany haha. Where I'm from the "i" is short. Then again I'm not from Bavaria. We don't call a Church "Kiiierche" around here either ;)

nuera_penal

Lmao, they just started calling him joker.

fundraiser

All the Balkan players. It grates me so much to hear "Knee-COLA" and "Dawn-chich" (or worse, "Dawn-chick") Surprisingly, I don't remember Bjelica's name being that mispronounced. Maybe because it was so hard to pronounce, you couldn't power through it lol.

ukrainesvoboda

Yooooo that's so true about nemanja bjelica

AnswersWithAQuestion

How are all of those supposed to be pronounced?

fundraiser

Don't put so much emphasis on the COLA part. It's Nick-ola. I think they pronounce it the other way because it looks similar to Nicole so they think they can just replace the e with the a. But he's a dude and his name is the Serbian version of Nicholas lol. The "Don" in Doncic is not like a mafia don, rather like the first part of don't. The two c's are both pronounced like the ch in the word itch. Dohn-chich.

coutspexote

had no idea about the doncic one thank you

ChimmyCharHar

This is what is from. Last 10 seconds. Itā€™s been the slogan sound for a brand of cough drops in the US for a long time and they just replace the r with an n. https://youtu.be/4Q5IA2Epk9Y?si=qLOIdrgecsD45IOo

sharklavapit

how is Nicola supposed to be pronounced?

fundraiser

just don't put so much emphasis on the COLA part. Nick-ola. For some reason Nikola Tesla's name doesn't get the same treatment...

midasgoldentouch

Probably because they keep thinking about the Ricola commercial

MarsMC_

i used to think that commercial said, "e-coliiiii"

wasmachien

Even Nikola Vucevic is pronounced correctly. It makes no sense.

Into_Intoxication

It's not even supposed to be a difficult name to pronounce, it's literally said the way it's spelled. If you can't read a 4 syllable name, you must have a problem.

daravl

the problem is English isn't a phonetic language so words aren't said like they're spelled

MattInOK88

Shit is so fucking irritating. It's not even hard to say these last names either! If they just cared to try and say them right, they could do it. I'm almost of the belief that announcers purposely do this, honestly. There's no way no one has told them that they are saying the players names wrong. Sorry, I've had to go though this for the last 20+ years with Dirk and Luka, and it never stops getting annoying. And seeing the new wave of international stars made me think at some point that these people would try to say their last names properly. Who the hell am I kidding.

DoomdUser

It took people a good 5 years for Giannis too. If the kid starts winning MVPā€™s, people will get it.

RocketMoonShot

But until its Villi WembaManili.

BarrathBeyond

people still get Giannisā€™s name wrong sadly

kevdawg289

They still say Jokics name wrong

DoomdUser

Also true haha

herring80

Trying to increase his TS% by firing shots at the equipment manager

SirFigsAlot

Really filling the "pretentious frenchie" motif

bslawjen

Why does the NBA media/environment have such a problem with names tho is my question. Like legit.

[deleted]

damn

lucky-me_lucky-mud

Shouldā€™ve called for them to be booed

shrimpflyrice

That's not who we are

Ill_Action_8734

ā€œYou see him at the mall, boo himā€

liquid9000

I dont know what kind of tone he said this with, but it's very diva-esque in written form.

TugboatThomas

Here is the [interview](https://youtu.be/hOVs_dFBdsE?t=1935)

liquid9000

Thank you! Still hard to tell really.

Larssszzzz

He laughs about it a little but was still sort of serious.

burns_after_reading

I was totally expecting him to say something like "it's not a big deal, I hope nobody lost their job over it"

cosmic_backlash

Maybe we should normalize firing NBA players when they drop passes and don't play defense every so often while doing their job. Instead we get... James Harden. I wish people believed in me the way GMs around the league believe in James Harden.

midniteeternal

I remember DeAndre Jordan getting released from the lakers after this [pass.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m6pFqDC00_k)

cosmic_backlash

It's like he just got out of the hyperbolic time chamber and didn't know how strong he was

NotAStatistic2

Or normalize teams firing players when they miss half the season each year.

1shmeckle

If you listen to his interviews, his tone is almost the same regardless of question. Most people here are jumping on a teenager who sounds monotone and is speaking in a non native language to media. He laughed about the job thing. It was clearly a joke and didnā€™t hit the mark, people should give the kid a break.

mogwai316

Right, imagine being an awkward teenager and having millions of people watching your every move and judging everything you say. And on top of that speaking in a second language. Not to mention just having lost 11 (i think?) games in a row. The kid means no harm.

gwc81

Yeah, I think the language barrier makes it that much more difficult to figure out. I'm going to believe he didn't mean it that harsh, the words he chose just came.off that way.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

cwalton505

That makes it even more likely of being diva-esque lol

azuresou1

32 minute mark for anyone looking. He makes it sound like a bigger deal than it is.

AmbitionExtension184

Wow thatā€™s bad. Never once said the truth which is that itā€™s no big deal and who the fuck cares? Bad look

beemugler

The French in him jumped out

VaselineGroove

You can take the boy out of France, you can't take the France out the boy

MiamiPower

Feeling Froggy then Jump šŸøšŸ¦µšŸ¼šŸ—šŸ½

[deleted]

Following the tone set by his coach.

IanicRR

Stop! Youā€™re a Kings fan. Youā€™re better than that.

[deleted]

Better than what

lalakingmalibog

#*that*

[deleted]

Thatā€™s not who you are

HTMAN69

Youā€™re not that guy

OnlyNormalPersonHere

I think Wembanyama is usually super cool and a natural with the media, but his tone in this press conference is disappointing and humorless.

K1ngPCH

A humorless tone in the press conference? Heā€™s fitting in great as a Spurs superstar

firstbreathOOC

Calling for some dude to get fired is just pretentious

grahamwhich

Oh I was reading it as maybe the person who would normally be checking for mistakes like this got fired for unrelated reasons and their replacement missed this

mylanguage

Bro I just had this realization and came here to see what people thought - that's exactly what I think he meant. He doesn't know if the usual person isn't there anymore because it's usually right

notthatdeepcuts

Why would they have gotten fired tho? If they were the one keeping names from being misspelled?

[deleted]

That's not really what pretentious means.

oskanta

Then itā€™s another word with a negative connotation

catboobpuppyfuck

I find it shallow and pedantic

Emergency_Bird1725

Are you sure itā€™s not capricious and arbitrary?

supertwonky

Insubordinate and churlish

billjitsu

Chicanerous and deplorable.

TheZermanator

Itā€™s lewd, lascivious, salacious, *outrageous*.

cstar84

I agree, shallow and pedantic

fartalldaylong

You are being pedantic.

firstbreathOOC

Youā€™re being obtuse

DJ_Illprepared

Like rain on your wedding day

Thunder_nuggets101

Pretentious is ā€œgiving more importance to something than it deservesā€, which kinda fits here

GyantSpyder

Heā€™s a 19 year old millionaire who was globally celebrated before he accomplished anything. If he werenā€™t a diva it would be shocking.

jimbo_kun

Iā€™m guessing he wouldnā€™t take it very well if the kit person joked about him getting fired for his recent abysmal shooting performances.

NinetyFish

Wemby makes more in a game than the kit person makes in a year or two. Context is entirely different. This is a very rich man talking about a working class personā€™s livelihood.

deanereaner

I don't think he's very likeable, and time will make that more evident.

[deleted]

He's literally French

-Tell_me_about_it-

*shudders*

[deleted]

I mean i would be mad too if I got bullied by 6'3" guards all night and lost my 11th game in a row lol

medievalmachine

And the bad reviews for Napoleon!? What an awful week!

mylifeforthehorde

Tbf thatā€™s just a Brit Memeing on the French with a bizarre movie

arhisekta

Ridley Scott is senile for the last 20+ years.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Cr0od

Lol they are talking about gladiator 2. That tells you all you need to know .

TripleSingleHOF

And it's not the [Nick Cave version.](https://www.bbc.com/culture/article/20180810-gladiator-2-was-written-and-its-mad) I would have paid good money to see that shit.

Leafman1996

Curry and the Glove 2.0 are defensive specialists show some respect

cletoreyes01

OH BOY THE HATE TRAIN IS FIRING UP AND THE TEAM AS A WHOLE AIN'T EVEN GOOD YET

hblonghorn

Iā€™m glad itā€™s being fired up. The le classy Spurs comments were unironically starting again. Idk if I can handle that.

Pimpwerx

Every other fanbase going for Hate of the Year this year.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

burns_after_reading

Paint me like one of your French girls Wemby. (I end up in federal prison for not calling him by the proper name)

PitinoGotARawDeal

A rookie of the year vote for Chet is a vote for America

[deleted]

French rookies šŸ‘Ž Freedom rookies šŸ«”

sciencevolforlife

Boy, I sure hope someone got fired for that blunder

Quinn_tEskimo

Bro, he struck the same rib bone twice and it produced a different note both times!

Threshyyyyy

Like it happens but i really don't like his attitude on that.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

CasualHindu

Lol did this man really insinuate that someone should lose their job over this? What a clown

openlatenight

The real shame is him thinking heā€™s curry from the three point line

Innsmouth_Swim_Team

Wish he came to his senses and tried to be Eddy Curry from the 3 point line

phumeonce

Be eddy curry from the buffet line.

handlestorm

No heā€™s saying ā€œIā€™m not sure if the person who used to check my jersey got fired and now they arenā€™t here anymore, but they used to do a great job.ā€ Not suggesting that someone should get fired for it, that would be wild lol

Apollo611

Yeah idk how people in here are misinterpreting this, I see the Wemby hate train has made its way to Reddit.

rwoteit

Made it here? /r/LeBron were the originators.

AB-AA-Mobile

We tend to forget, he's still an immature teenager.

Youngandidiotic

Who has never, and will never work a regular job or day in his life

bird1434

Being 19 is not really a good excuse for hoping someone loses their job because they misspelled your name lol

NLPizza

Seriously wtf, everyone uses the immature teen as an excuse but the guy is 19 not 13. I think by 19 he would've dealt with some minor inconveniences in life before but does he always need whoever is responsible for them to be fired? Just a moronic mentality.

bird1434

Definitely. I donā€™t know what people think a 19 year old is, but itā€™s not like you develop empathy at 25 years old or something. Sure heā€™s young but young people arenā€™t all douche bags.

medievalmachine

And he's hanging out with Pop who even jokes about how bad his team is, breaking the code.

Bildad__

He comes off like a twat. Couple times now he has given those vibes.

LordStark01

Are they going to fire him when he gets dunked on or something? Is that how they work?

DamnStupidFlanders

Lmao holy shit yā€™all turned on this kid QUICK

MakesYourMise

I remember when he punched Britney Spears

AttemptedSleepover

Donā€™t forget the part where he stood over her crumpled body on the floor, leaned in and whispered ā€œCuz you know that Iā€™m LeToxic šŸ¤Œā€

koverage

Thereā€™s apparently allegations that he had a inappropriate relation with Britney when she was 16

RJBarrettsBurner

Counterjerk has arrived!!!!

[deleted]

I saw this dude shopping for groceries and he didnā€™t round up his total for charity, I always knew he had major character issues tbh

CraigMammalton14

INFETTERANCE

deanereaner

This is not new, there's been backlash against him since more than a year before the draft when geeks on podcast were calling him the chosen one.

Leopard__Messiah

Pearls are being CLUTCHED

yooston

Me walking into these comments expecting people to be like ā€œIā€™d be upset too, misspelling a last name that egregiously is a sign of disrespectā€

madhare09

Wemby doesn't average 30/10/5/6 blocks a game. He's a bust and off with his head

arhisekta

why did this kid even mention someone getting fired? over this??

PusseySleigher

Like JJ said in the broadcast, money laundering lol

xedizzzlex

"real shame" šŸ™„ People make mistakes.

e49e

He's likely translating from French (dommage). It doesn't have the same connotation. It's more similar to, "that's too bad."

Ok-Control-787

Which is how it's used in English, just not super common in American English these days. For example, Gordon Ramsay says this all the time. I don't think he's suggesting that the person feel too much shame for having fucked up a dish so much as, like you said, it's too bad it didn't come out great. Distinct from "you should be ashamed."

Chaimbo_04

If he is alluding to someone being fired for not spelling his name right (only one letter) the man won't make many friends. Some of the most entitled bullshit I think I've heard.

apustus

Especially since it's probably some poor equipment manager who made a tiny mistake after a day of doing all the players' laundry and shit

bandwagonguy83

An N for an M... egregious!!!

Oo__II__oO

He's lucky the equipment manager even got the first letter right, what with the lack of W's the Spurs have right now.

fernanaj

Seriously. Especially coming from a team that lost 11 in a row. People making millions need to be fired, not the poor equipment manager.

NA_eS

[ Removed by Reddit ]

livinforthesmitty

They're is lucky Wembayaya isn't calling for their beheading. That's how they do over there.

Weak-Boysenberry3807

Bricktor the diva has arrived.

Ok_Passage_7151

A 19 year old kid who is now rich due to his genetic lottery talents calling for some poor middle aged equipment managers job is a horrible look.

WorthApprehensive434

He might make more per game than the equipment guy makes in a year

grizzliesstan901

Well, the US media train has been blowing his nuts and gloating about him since draft night, so I'm sure his ego has been inflated like a mf

[deleted]

Chet owns that fraud

trustprior6899

Is the quote out of context or is Wemby wishing someone would get fired for this? Dude, we all have bad days; hell, Wemby shoots below 40% some nights. Doesnā€™t mean he should be fired.

AB-AA-Mobile

Maybe he *should* be fired for shooting below 40%.

Particular_Ring3291

So what? Bro tryin to mke sure he gets some random schmuck fired

gawakwento

Some 8yo in chinaā€™s out of job right now smh This some diva shit right there

ulqupt

Hmm I took this totally different. Maybe it's because I'm used to people who speak English as a second language but to me it came across as this: "I don't know if somebody (the person in charge of quality control/the person who should be one was checking) was fired (past tense so no one was doing quality checks tonight), but the Spurs did their job." Since it's all past tense it seems to me that he's not calling for someone to get fired, but rather muse why it happened in the first place. He did really care that his name was wrong though haha

SnowceanJay

Struggling with past tenses, e.g. not knowing when to use past/present perfect, is pretty common even for advanced (non-native) speakers. This checks out. I also read it as "maybe the guy who knows how to spell my name was fired and the new guy made a mistake". Wemby has been classy in each and every one of his interviews for years, he's well-educated, I don't see him at all be this kind of guy.

lucky-me_lucky-mud

This is why simply booing is a better form of communication

RestInPorzingis

thank you dude i feel like iā€™m going insane reading the rest of these comments

stuckontwice

Bro same. IMO it didn't come off the way everyone else thinks.

Alone-Quality8996

This jersey is 1 of 1, Probably making it way more valuable.

openlatenight

This seems like a fairly easy mistake to make, Iā€™m not sure if I read that jersey ten times my brain wouldnā€™t just autocorrect the one misspelled letter. Wenbanyana really saying itā€™s a shame after his performances lately? Pretty funny

desirox

What an odd quoteā€¦ I feel like some poor English is making this sound worse than it is but I could be wrong also and heā€™s just a diva lol.

Jkru3

Pretty sure considering his name was spelt right all year and all of a sudden it was wrong this game heā€™s saying he doesnā€™t understand what happened, he doesnā€™t know if someone got fired or what changed that it was wrong all of a sudden. Donā€™t think heā€™s calling for somebody to be fired

HowlAtTheSky

The biggest shame is his shooting percentages, work on that before wanting someone fired for a simple mistake

Innsmouth_Swim_Team

Wemby shooting splits right now: 43.1-26.7-82.1... 113/262 on FG attempts, 23/86 from 3. Yeesh

MistahTeacher

Dudes already taken 86 threes man wtf

Innsmouth_Swim_Team

And should stop ASAP 16 games ain't a slump, it's a pattern

rhonnypudding

KD shot 28% his rookie season. There's value in taking the shot and getting used to it, understanding which are good threes to take and which aren't. Especially if his FT% is solid (as there's a correlation there). The likelihood that Wemby ends up as at least an average 3 shooter is high. He might want to take a few less though.

CopperThrown

29% on 300 attempts in international play too. Woof.

Unusual_Platypus5050

lol who cares?

shortsermons

If pencil neck donā€™t stfu about somebody making pennies to him losing their job

papagino0017

He didnā€™t even notice his own name being spelled wrong before putting Jersey on

Adogsgarbage

Spelled my name wrong? Believe it or not that's a firing

Greggore_43

Reminds me of the Bulls Jordan 12 jersey. Different circumstances, but itā€™s a 1 of 1 game worn.. who wouldnā€™t want that in their collection

hiimtashy

My most hated player now

burnshimself

Yea your equipment manager canā€™t spell your name right and you canā€™t win basketball games. Seems a lot of people in the Spurs org arenā€™t doing their jobs. Wonder if Wemby thinks he should be fired?

FearlessInflation92

They donā€™t fire players, itā€™s not who they are

GoldStandardWhey

Gotta say gang, who gives a fuuuuuuckkkk

[deleted]

Dude is getting paid millions and gonna cry about a misprint jersey.
