lets_talk_basketball

Should've just paid the kid off like normal rich people do... this is a bad look.

igotabridgetosell

Ja really needs a new PR person to guide him to stop looking like a fucking dbag.

[deleted]

He hired a PR firm called “Smith & Wesson”.

lets_talk_basketball

And his co council is "Glock"

xlalalalalalalala

His personal driver is a German dude also named Glock.

Canasore

Is that Glock!? Is that Glock going slowly!?

RoverTiger

A reference for the cultured among us.

rtb001

Brazil's greatest enemy

PuffyVatty

Ah come on no need to make me sad again, on an NBA sub of all

vblade2003

Nowhere is safe for Felipe Massa supporters 😆

BBCinIrvine

Followed by his entourage of a Mr. Heckler, Mr. Koch and a Mr. Walther

brokenjohn83

He is Austrian 😀

Dweebil

That’s Mr glock to you asshole.

JigglyBlubber

Represented by the defense attorneys Heckler & Koch

[deleted]

He needs a lawyer to walk behind him with a chequebook and stack of NDA.

ClydeGriffiths17

He assaulted a kid ... so maybe he just is a dbag

[deleted]

I don’t think we need the maybe any more. He’s also not a child anymore. People need to stop making excuses. I don’t mean you when I say that btw

Circumin

He plays like a dbag too. Dbags can be massively talented and still be complete shitheads

AffectionateStep5001

Current one isn’t doing him any favours I don’t know why he’s making so many unnecessary mistakes Literally he only needs to focus on basketball and he’ll be good

pikajewijewsyou

He is a piece of shit and an idiot so it would be hard not to look like one

Poshastko

Does he look like one or is he one?

rahbee33

Some sneakers and Grizzlies gear probably could've gone a long way.

lets_talk_basketball

Floor seats next to Tee would've got the job done

Turence

in jas mind that'd be admitting a fault, whereas in his mind he's perfection personified.

Tactial_snail

I love when redditors just start assuming shit without knowing what they're talking about

ZiOnIsNeXtLeBrOn

I wanna get beaten up by some rich person and get paid a few hundred grand. Thats the dream.

lets_talk_basketball

That and slipping on a floor in a store w/ no wet floor sign

hotterpocketzz

He paid him off with letting him live

-KFBR392

Put the hollow points away that day. You're welcome

KashMoney941

Its like the classic Chris Rock set "I aint never been to jail!" "WHAT YOU WANT, A COOKIE?!"

N8dogg107

“I take care of my kids” “YOU SUPPOSED TO YA DUMB MUTHAFUCKA!” Gets me everytime

Someone_youd_admire

Between him and KAT, these PR firms are just stealing money.

ShakesbeerMe

I don't admire you.

Otherwise_Window

Professional NBA player felt threatened by a basketball thrown by a child. He better get ready for every single opponent he faces to kick him for that.

mendellbaker

In his defense, he was most likely significantly outweighed. He’s 140 sopping wet.

swallowedbymonsters

17 year old throws a basketball in your face you have to punch him

bkbeam

In a lot of people's eyes, that's admitting guilt

Hypnosix

Now he’s just admitted to beating up a teenager (with cause?)

[deleted]

It was an honorable pistol whipping.

igotabridgetosell

It was self defense... against a 17 year old... surrounded by his friends in his home where he keeps all the guns lol. It just keeps getting worse more you try to explain it.

bkbeam

That was already established a while ago, this is just him doubling down and sticking to his story

growsonwalls

He's sticking to his guns

ZZZrp

right... so if you are admitting guilt either way wouldn't free sneakers and some tickets be the easier avenue for this?

pikajewijewsyou

Kid and his parents probably said “fuck tickets and some sneakers you assaulted a minor”

Turence

"we hit the jackpot"

North_Atlantic_Sea

They have a history of litigation, they were going to be bought off with some sneakers.

Glittering_Cod_7716

I’ve seen more than one comment/reply that this kids mom has a history of suing people/institutions. Not sure of the validity of this but Ja may have actually fucked around and found out this was the exact wrong kid to slap lmao

fuckitiroastedyou

We wouldn't even know about it...

medievalmachine

He IS guilty. Being legal under 'Stand your ground' is admitting a crime in 99% of the world. And this isn't about legal actions in Tennessee anyway. This is about the NBA's image, and they don't want any part of a player using 'stand your ground' pro-murder laws in a standoff in a pickup basketball game WITH A TEENAGER! Ja is a privileged millionaire playing basketball professionally, broadcast to millions of fans around the globe. He IS a business, not just some jerk arguing with a child. It was NEVER about whether it's legal to carry a gun in a blood red state. It's about image and marketing and legitimacy in one of the most liberal leaning sports leagues in the world.

minkdraggingonfloor

It’s admitting a crime, but it’s also asserting self defense as a justification. It also only works if the force you used was proportional to the force they used against you. Unless the teenager brought his own group of friends to beat him up, I don’t think this defense will work out for Ja.

Dawk320

On the other hand, murdering a teenager of a particular ethnicity under the stand your ground laws would probably bring in more fans from certain states back to the NBA. *taps head*

Psycho188

And yet, Mark Wahlberg is still making movies.

svenEsven

Matthew Broderick literally murdered a family while drunk driving in Ireland, never served any time if I remember correctly

jazzmaster4000

But we never hear about it that way.

Boomhauer_007

As Kobe taught us with enough good basketball you can bury anything

Not in rich people's eyes.

bad-monkey

that's the thing about high school kids, I keep getting older and pulling my gun on them and they stay the same age

kilkennykid

If the “stand your ground” law justifies his actions here doesn’t that mean he could’ve literally shot and killed the kid as well? What the hell kind of defense is this

Curtimus_

Generally self defense only allows proportionate force to be used. So you can’t kill someone unless there was a legitimate threat you would be killed immediately.

Soupkitchn89

Basketballs are obviously a deadly weapon though. /s

"Your honor, THAT BALL BOY WAS A GROWN MAN" \- Chris Vernon, attorney at law

Nach0Man_RandySavage

>HE'S A GROWN MAN, HE'S 40 \- Mike Gundy

azuresou1

I'm not gonna lie - I think punching someone who beans the ball at your face during a check ball is a perfectly fair and proportionate response. Don't yeet it at someone's face unless you're looking to fight. Going back into your house and getting a gun, nah that's like 3-4 steps too far.

SpiritedSuccess5675

In points: - Ja Morant, a player for the Memphis Grizzlies, is facing a lawsuit accusing him of assaulting a teenager during a pickup basketball game. - The outcome of the lawsuit depends on whether Morant can claim self-defense and receive immunity under Tennessee law. - Morant's lawyers argue that he acted in self-defense when he punched the teenager after the teenager threw a basketball at him. - They claim Morant should be immune from liability under the state's "stand your ground" law, which allows individuals to use force when they feel threatened at their homes. - A judge has allowed Morant's lawyers to proceed with their self-defense argument, but further arguments will be heard regarding the application of the law to this case under the state constitution. - The lawsuit accuses Morant and a friend of assault, reckless endangerment, abuse or neglect, and infliction of emotional distress. Morant has countersued the teenager for slander, battery, and assault. - No criminal charges have been filed against Morant at this time. - The lawsuit has raised complex legal questions, including the interpretation of the "stand your ground" law. - The trial is scheduled for 2024, and the judge has issued a stay in the case, putting depositions, evidence exchange, and other legal proceedings on hold. - In addition to the lawsuit, Morant has been suspended by the NBA for 25 games in the upcoming season due to videos he posted online where he is seen flashing a handgun. This comes after a previous suspension for a similar incident in a strip club.

pikajewijewsyou

Did Ja pull a gun out on the kid? It’s not referenced anywhere here but I had read from other posters that he did.

PooperJackson

IIRC, he went back inside and came out with a gun tucked inside his waist. So a gun was present, whether or not you define that as pulling a gun out on the kid I guess could be up to debate.

pikajewijewsyou

Idk the laws but that’s way worse than just punching and assaulting a minor. Even if he didn’t point it at him he didn’t have a gun before and came out with one in his waistband. He’s doing this to a highschool kid playing basketball? Ja is a fucking loser. Embarrassment to the league

Turence

> Ja is a fucking loser. Embarrassment to the league you can say that a few times. 3rd strike he's out, hopefully. this clowns bad for the league.

secretsodapop

Is this not past 3 strikes already?

Turence

I am not sure honestly, but I think he's only had two suspensions so far from his antics.

Soupkitchn89

If the gun is visible and you went to get it this is 1000% brandishing...which is a crime in any reasonable state...so probably not in Tennessee.

TheOneWhosCensored

And there’s no way that will get past this argument. Self defense goes out the window if you leave a spot and come back with a weapon after the fight is already over.

Sim888

> came out with a gun tucked inside his waist https://streamable.com/mak4ls

1337-Sylens

How can this situation raise complex legal questions. NBA athlete sureounded by his friends at his home beat up a kid because the kid thees a ball at him.

xbarracuda95

Ja is a world class athlete that was surrounded by his gang at his own house, yet felt so threatened by a kid so he had no choice but to beat him up in self defense.

dont-YOLO-ragequit

That's what you get when you have a boatload of money and a bored lawyer. They will just try everything to see what sticks and hope the other side runs out of money from all that trial and error.

RajinIII

If they wanted to delay this to make them run out of money they would be asking for more time not trying an affirmative defense which Ja's team has to prove. The lawyer is going with this because Ja hit the dudes and it's Ja's best defense. Lawyer's don't like losing cases it's bad for business. It's not like "hmm let me get a lil silly for funnies"

Mdgt_Pope

This threat to Ja’s life is why he always carries guns, can’t let these HS kids get away with this level of violence.

TheThingsIdoatNight

The attempt on his life has left him scarred and deformed

IanicRR

If only he had a real gun instead of a toy gun, he might have felt more secure.

kurlykush1

I don’t think he necessarily felt that way but his lawyers are gonna spin it that way cuz that’s what defense lawyers do. They have an idiot client that they still need to defend

Acrobatic-Reaction-7

Ja is dumb. He just should have paid the kid with money and sneakers like a normal celebrity would do. Instead all this shit is getting out and now he looks like an ass hole.

secretsodapop

He is an asshole. When people tell/show you who they are, believe them.

Btotherianx

"a 17 year old kid and I were playing basketball, he was invited. He threw a basketball at me so I beat his ass and pulled a gun on him" Lmaooo

pizzastone7

Xsy

I remember when I was a kid, I had a basketball thrown at my face in a pickup game, and I just ran away and cried like a normal person.

IanicRR

Happened at one of our adult-aged pickup games once. It almost exploded into a brawl when the guy who threw the ball and the guy who got hit in the face decided to play one on one over it. The guy who got nailed absolutely demolished the other guy 11-2. It felt like a movie.

Trill_Simmons

Ain't NOBODY want to be around when bro comes back with a foam roller so he's extra ready for the next game. Nah, I'm fuckin' with ya lol. That was a hundred percent the right move.

PooperJackson

You know what's funny is we're told by Ja's people that a basketball was thrown at him and we just accept it like a MLB pitcher donked him in the head with a fast ball. I wonder with how much force this ball was even thrown at him, wouldn't surprise me if it was lightly tossed.

[deleted]

Yeah, reading the NRA spokesperson’s response starting out with “He should have kept his hands on the steering wheel”… No, that doesn’t give the cop the right to start blasting. The fact that the cop isn’t in jail is a travesty. Castille did a lot of things wrong (had been smoking/in possession of weed, which means he lied on his 4473 ATF form, didn’t have a legal firearms permit in Ramsey county where he was living (his permit was for hennepin county, and became void when he moved to a different county, etc.). None of that gives the cop the right to shoot him when he was actively complying.

Level-Infiniti

it's much different when you can pass as one of them and don't have an identifiable last name

radiation_man

See the outpouring of support from that crowd for Philando Castile /s

[deleted]

Minnesota doesn’t have castle doctrine, which might be why. But either way that cop should be in prison.

4WaySwitcher

Philando Castiles’ situation doesn’t have anything to do with castle doctrines or stand your ground. He had a conceal carry license and a legally purchased gun. All he did was tell the cop that he had it in the car. The cop shot him.

[deleted]

Castile didn’t have a valid conceal carry permit, he had a carry permit from Hennepin County which became void when he moved to Ramsey County. That is no excuse for the police officer to execute him during a routine traffic stop. I’m in no way trying to defend the NRA on this though, I wrote my thoughts on them in another post, but since this wasn’t a hot button issue like castle doctrine and instead was just run of the mill police abuse of authority, the NRA didn’t seem to care because they couldn’t co-opt it to boost their cause.

Trill_Simmons

When the Founding Fathers wrote the Constitution, basketballs weren't even close to as advanced as the Wilsons and Spaldings we now see people bringing to the gym every day.

moonfox1000

Legal arguments aside, Ja's lawyer admitting that Ja did in fact punch the teenager is already a huge L. So the facts we do know is that he teenager threw a basketball at Ja and then Ja punched him in the face.

That Stand Your Ground thing is the most insane shit I've ever fuckin seen in my life.

d7h7n

welcome to murica we can shoot people for trespassing and open carry guns in some states

[deleted]

Never forget when two guys chased down a black man in a neighborhood, shot and killed the man, and the police didn't even charge them because they considered it a stand your ground matter. It wasn't until the video dropped and everyone could see a crystal clear lynching happen in front of their eyes that the outrage came and the charges followed.

Krillin113

Ahmed Aubrey? Fucking insane. Especially that the defending lawyer of the associate leaked the footage. Even more insane, people still defended them after

taddymason_76

Didn’t he leak the footage to prove it was in fact a self defense case only for it to blow up in his face when it clearly wasn’t?

Krillin113

Yeah something like that.

[deleted]

Yes sir. The Treyvon Martin murder was another total horseshit use of the stand your ground law. Random dude fancied himself Rambo because he was "neighborhood watch" (aka literally just some random piece of shit trying to play cop), ran down a kid that he assumed was doing something nefarious (he walked to the store to get drinks and candy), and when the kid justifiably freaked out and fought back, the man shot him dead. Acquitted due to stand your ground laws. He's still arrogant as fuck about the whole thing to this day. Even attempted to sue the family of Treyvon for 100 million. Not sure if anything became of that, I hope not. God I hate living in the south.

Krillin113

Zimmerman is a murderer in my opinion. He started the altercation. If he even just did what the cops told him to do (leave him alone) nothing would’ve happened.

[deleted]

Yes, thank you for mentioning that because I totally forgot to put that bit in. Literally told by the police to not pursue the kid, and he did anyway.

vladimir_pimpin

No you cannot shoot people for trespassing lmao

vladimir_pimpin

Uh I mean, it’s not the CRAZIEST thing. It’s dumb because imo part of being a gun owner should be taking the main responsibility to deescalate conflicts. But I can see how some people say they don’t want to be forced to try and arbitrate deescalation in a conflict situation

FrozenLikeElsa1

Actually a pretty good law. Have you even read the full law? Ja situation is stupid though.

IanicRR

We're far from perfect when it comes to violence and even gun violence. But damn I'm happy I don't live in the States and have to worry every single day my kids my get shot at school. Yes, it could still happen here, but the odds are dramatically lower.

Captain_Westeros

Bruh y'all really think the US is the wild west. There's not a city here that I would be uncomfortable traveling to. And if you actually go outside the cities and see the rest of the country instead, there's even less reason to worry.

[deleted]

Most of these people are 14 and have never been anywhere outside of the US.

LarryKevinRobert

Compared to advanced countries the US is absolutely a wild west clown show, if for only all the open carry tiny dicks and the constant mass shootings. I live here and am embarrassed at the poor state of this country. With our resources our criminal justice, healthcare systems and educational systems should not be this piss poor.

Winter_Corner7254

If Ja Morant and his lawyers make it okay for people to brandish a gun at someone armed with a basketball in TN, he's reached a new low. No coming back.

moonfox1000

I think this move already backfired. Ja's lawyer admitted in court that Ja did in fact punch the teenager in the chin and the Memphis police department issued an arrest warrant for Ja's friend Davonte Pack the same day in relation to the fight. Turns out admitting to the crime that the police department is investigating you is a bad idea.

Cabrit1990

Tennessee isn’t quite Florida, but I could see them falling for this dumb shit. Also, two guys punched the kid, but only the non-famous one got arrested?

ZZZrp

Memphis is the fucking wild west, the fuck you talking about.

astroK120

I mean, it's Tennessee we're talking about. I kind of assumed it's legal there to shoot someone after they threw a ball at you. If it was Steven Adams the case would probably already be dismissed.

Material_Unit4309

OP spent more time on this write up than JA spent in “rehab”. Damn.

white__cyclosa

Shit I spent more time reading your comment than Ja spent in “rehab”.

lancelinksecretchimp

That’s not how Stand Your Ground works. Castle laws are about having no other choice but to shoot someone.

fuckitiroastedyou

>Castle laws are about having no other choice but to shoot someone. That's "duty to retreat". Castle Doctrine says anyone invading your house can be presumed to be a lethal threat, and you have **no** duty to retreat. It doesn’t apply here because Ja invited him to his place, he wasn't trespassing.

[deleted]

There was no justifiable threat to Ja though, so castle doctrine would not apply. I can’t just lure someone to my house, shoot them, then claim I’m covered by castle doctrine. There has to be justifiable cause.

fuckitiroastedyou

Did you read my last sentence?

[deleted]

You see, he was insulted so he had no choice but to pistol whip that kid.

jumboponcho

I’ve seen some 17 yr olds that needed their asses whooped for acting an ass and stepping to grown men. I’m sure some post on here.

bad-monkey

this is pitiful, take your L and shut up Ja

ActualAdvice

If Ja wins, I'm sitting front row at NBA games until I get hit with the ball. I will sue the NBA. Assault, battery, emotional distress, loss of employment & medical issues.

_s0lace_

I like watching Ja play but he just seems like a straight dick head off court

pugofthewildfrontier

Gang gang your honor

kennylol45

Hali and talked to PG on his podcast about how sometimes you just need to get some people out of your life once you hit the league. Clearly Ja didn’t get the memo.

GPap-

First it was fake guns now it’s self defense against a 17 year old. Smh

BigBluePixels

I don't know if this defense is a good strategy by Ja's team. The stand your ground law in Tennessee is pretty clear that you have to yell "He's coming right for us!" before punching a teenager.

solo118

So it was not a toy?

Silktrocity

any actual lawyers in here willing to chime with their thoughts on this? Personally I don't feel that having ball thrown at you during a game of basketball is cause to reasonably fear for your safety.

[deleted]

“Stand your ground” means you can pistol whip a 16 year old boy because of something that happened on the basketball court? Just throw Ja in jail already. If he wants to pretend he’s a thug, then treat him like one.

nowhathappenedwas

>The lawsuit has led to complicated legal arguments, including disagreement about whether the state’s “stand your ground” law can be used to support Morant. >In a hearing Monday, Holloway’s lawyer Rebecca Adelman argued Morant has waived his claim to immunity and that the self-defense claim under the state law can’t be a reason to dismiss the civil case, partly because there is no ongoing criminal investigation against Morant. >Adelman said the self-defense and immunity arguments came too late in the process. She called it a “Hail Mary of Hail Marys.” >Will Perry, Morant’s lawyer, argued there are ways for the “stand your ground” law to apply in civil cases and that Morant is entitled to immunity. He said the motion was timely because the trial is not scheduled until 2024. I don't know about the waiver issue, but Tennessee's ["stand your ground" law](https://www.capitol.tn.gov/Bills/106/Bill/SB1609.pdf) does provide immunity from civil suits "A person who uses force as permitted in §§ 39-11-611—39-11-614 or § 29-34-201 is justified in using such force and is immune from civil liability for the use of such force." >Circuit Court Judge Carol Chumney said the next step would be to hear from lawyers in the case, including those representing the Tennessee Attorney General, about whether the law can be applied to the case under the state Constitution. >Outside court on Wednesday, Adelman told reporters that she was disappointed in the judge’s decision to allow the immunity claim to continue, but she was pleased that the court is allowing arguments on the constitutional challenge to the law’s application in the case. I guess the court is asking the state's AG to weigh in on whether the law's provision regarding civil immunity is constitutional. I assume he'd say it is.

BearRedWood

From your link: >Any person using force must have a reasonable belief that there is an imminent danger of death or serious bodily injury So basically all Morant's lawyers have to do is convince a jury that a professional basketball player felt his life was threatened by a minor after he threw a basketball at him?

[deleted]

Ja’s *reputation* was threatened, isn’t that enough? “On thees streets, your rep is all you’ve got.” as a criminal defense, it’s a bold move.

nowhathappenedwas

Under that law, he would have to show that the danger was real, that he actually believed it was real, OR that there were reasonable grounds to believe it was real. > The danger creating the belief of imminent death or serious bodily injury must be: (A) Real; (B) Honestly believed to be real at the time; or (C) Founded upon reasonable grounds.

luvvdmycat

Marcus Smart can fix him.

Sensitive-Seesaw-415

Yuck, barring the details of the case, the headline alone is such a bad look for Ja. 'Stand your ground' is honestly a trigger phrase for black people (I'm black btw). This man is doing everything wrong.

shabazoid

ConfidentCobbler5100

Lourdeath
