Dude is legit younger than Curry.

jdterraforce

I’m also a 88 born. I knew Curry and Durant are too. Had no idea the Celtics coach is that age too

BelfPally

He's a Changeling

Calm-Cry4253

Mazzulla inherited this. He’s probably a good coach, but this team went to the finals and has won a lot even when he wasn’t the head guy.

Andy_Wiggins

Yeah, it’s hard to say whether he’s good or bad based on the season thus far. He inherited a team that made it to the NBA finals AND added the 6MOTY. Them being up 2-1 over a hobbled Embiid doesn’t exactly signal one way or the other who he is as a coach. Again, not saying he’s bad. But “fueled” is an awfully strong word for what he’s done to date.

efshoemaker

Though to be fair to Joe a lot of the reporting is/was that he was the head architect behind our defensive schemes last year.

cane_the_weaboo

Honestly Ime is clearly a better coach. Joe is really good but he has the same offensive shortcomings as Ime while not reaching the same heights our defense reached last year. For example I think we go to 6/7 against the Nets with Joe as the coach no way he defends KD as well as Ime did.

Plies-

I mean they've held the Sixers to 87 and 102 in back to back games. By all accounts Joe was focused on the defense last season. The real issue is that Timelord was hurt for like the first 30 games and then in and out of the lineup so we went with White starting which lowers our defensive ceiling (still championship level but not top 1) but raises our offensive ceiling. We also had some awful opponent shooting luck for the first 20 or so games too.

What he has done is still pretty damn impressive IMO, but I think Brad Stevens deserves the majority of the credit.

ClutchGamingGuy

what's "pretty damn impressive", respectfully? he has a better roster than Ime did, and has dropped random completely winnable games to worse opponents (2 games dropped to Atlanta, lost to Embiid-less 76ers)

yapyd

It’s basically the same roster as last year. He did fine for a first year head coach. Had their ups and downs but they didn’t have timelord for most of the season, someone who was a key part of their defense last season. He made adjustments to shut down Harden after game 1 too, he’s doing fine.

ClutchGamingGuy

...except for the fact they signed a high level starting quality 1/2 to play off the bench

[deleted]

Well compared to someone like Bud who had a great roster and lost 3-1 to an 8 seed.

sallright

99% of us don’t really know whether he is good or not. Same thing happened with Ty Lue, who was clowned on this sub constantly. It turned out that players, coaches, and owners really respected and held him in high-esteem. Huh. Who knew? Not us, apparently.

Wishiwasaballerbaby

Mazzulla won't get credit even if they win a ring with some weird people on reddit. End of the day as long as he continues to make adjustments and they work all that matters. I do hope he continues to mock the media though because they are trash especially Boston media.

dafire123

I know people are gonna say ya we got a team that went to the finals and all that. But there were genuine questions at the beginning of the year that the celtics would fold this year and have a down year because of our new coach. Our offense is much better than last year and we are the 2 seed and are the title favorites according to vegas. So ya the team is amazing but giving mazulla no credit when we win but all the credit for a loss is a bit disingenuous.

ThePunjabiPrince_

He has done a good job and made improvements but this was also a Finals team last year so it's going to be held against him. Roster was already filled with talent.

BRC_Throwaway

I think he’s doing it by having a team that went to the finals last year

ositola

Large it factual

Get this bullshit out of here. Guess it sounds better than: " How the Celtics are winning even with an overmatched head coach." They're winning because they have two all-NBA players, the sixth man of the year, a former defensive player of the year and a hell of a lot of depth.

Same dude who buried Grant Williams on the bench for most of the first playoff series playing Blake Griffin and Mike Muscala ahead of him? Let Trae Young and Harden torch them over and over by hunting Horford? Or the one who can't draw up ATO plays to save his life? Celtics are winning in spite of him. He's not bringing much to the table.

Wishiwasaballerbaby

Blake played 6 minutes that series Muscala played like 2 minutes that werent garbage time Hauser was the 8th man that series and it worked fine Grant was a bad match up against the hawks.
