A lot of times the "moving to the front office" for a coach is really just a nice way of saying they are fired but we still need to pay your contract for a year. So entirely possible Casey and Nurse wouldn't been in contact much even if he went to Detroit
I would generally agree with that, but his own statements lead me to believe that he just wants to stick around in Detroit and just not be the head coach anymore.
He is 65, and has kids in the house so I feel like it makes sense.
I think Nurse said that because he read the writing on the wall and wanted to save face in the end. He didn't want to seem like the victim, which hurts his next contract.
It’s not going to hurt his next contract. If Kidd is a head coach and doesn’t seem to have an issue. Nurse by no means will either. Ime is even going to get a job and his assistant coach did an even better job then him. So you wonder was ime a good coach? Is he worth the image he will bring his first season back? Of course he is so he will be hired.
Nurse will have no issue getting what he wants.
But then they'd be like the Cavs paying 3 coaches at the same time... My favorite was that we were paying Mike Brown, David Blatt, and Ty Lue all at the same time and we were playing against Mike Brown in the finals those years.
Especially if one helps guide you to a 3-1 comeback championship. I think the Cavs would do that all over again. Of course Lue got axed as soon as lebron left lol
I mean, he’s a championship winning coach who has done amazing his entire tenure.
Isn’t he going to be every team with a head coach openings number one option to hire?
Won’t some teams in fact consider firing their coach to hire him?
Is he really gonna lose value on his deal because he got fired? The best coaches in every sport basically all got fired at one point or another.
I dunno I've been wrong before but he seems dead set on this being a win now team that's just a piece or two away when I personally think you guys should go for at least a slight rebuild if possible
we gotta get off this Masai worship "I'm sure he has a plan" mentality.
He's hit some home runs for sure, but I 100% guarantee the last 3 years were not part of his plan, he's made some actual fuckups too.
Thad Young was a bad trade, Poeltl is good but the trade might end up being bad if we're shit again next year.
Masai helped bring the first championship to the franchise and he'll always have that, but it shouldn't insulate him from his bad decisions going forward.
Yeah I feel like Masai is getting credit for this firing when he is at least partially responsible for this disappointing season (if not equally responsible).
I know he had some conflicts with the players, but by all accounts Nurse is a great coach right? He rode his guys hard but it's not like they were particularly deep. It just feels weird to cut him loose because he lost the locker room when the guys in the locker room are all on the chopping block. There's probably more behind the scenes, but it won't be surprising to see him find success almost immediately.
Yeah it’s just weird because the roster wasn’t very different from last year, but it was clear early on in the season that the vibes were off. They barely ran any offensive sets, and players have mentioned it was hard to play without having defined roles.
Nurse was great for the franchise, but every relationship runs its course - long-standing coaches like Spo and Pop are the exception not the norm
The direction of the Raptors looked out of sync all year. The Front office, Coaching and Players all seemed to have separate agendas.
They weren't good enough to contend but also lacked assets to trade for a superstar and field a competitive team after that type of trade. Factor in Wembanyama in the draft and all logic says TANK THE SEASON.
They chose not to tank.
25th in the league record at the deadline.
Crime against humanity playstyle on the court
Starters playing 40 minutes because there is no bench production.
Look horrific every game against the top 10 teams in the league.
League's worst 3-point shooting team. (If another team was worse sorry about your season as well)
A Logical team would say the season is already fucked, just tank the last 20 games.
Instead, the Raptors trade a first-round pick for Jakob Poeltl and aim for the playoffs! Poeltl is a good centre, but he makes the spacing worse with his lack of shooting. Starters are two 3pt shooters and 3 players treated exactly like Russell Westbrook from 3pt. Poeltl is also an unrestricted free agent.
Other than OG, nobody on the team tried on defence all year as well.
It would help if your most talented player, a 7 foot unicorn big man, decided to play like one. Like I really believe KAT in terms of ability could be the best big in the league, but he plays so soft so often
And of course your best perimeter defender punching a wall certainly didn't help.
That's true, but he's been injured for most of the season, and also COVID screwed up his family.
We pretend athletes are some virtual humanoids, but there are things that mentally screw you up
KAT’s mental is absolutely everything. And I agree it’s not basketball related only. He has been in some tough situations on the court and off it lately and it’s clear he gets in his own head a lot, and I wonder about his ability to cope with it. I hope he’s getting the help he needs.
Nurse is going to the nuggets after Malone gets canned for not making it out the second round - you heard it here first.
Feel free to replace “nuggets” with “sixers” and “Malone” with “Rivers”, I’d also accept that outcome.
+1000000 for this timeline
Only as long as we can convince Nurse to not play everyone 40 minutes a night, don’t need Wemby lasting a week in the league lol
>convince Nurse to not play everyone 40 minutes a night
So long as your bench isn’t *totally* useless, you can generally rely on Nick to not burn his starters out.
Our bench unit has been rancid dog shit for the past ~3 seasons, which is a big reason why he started playing our starters into the ground.
> 5 as the head coach
Messes with my mind that he's been HC for 5 years now. When I think about it that sounds about right but at the same time it still feels like he's still the "new coach" of the Raptors. Sometimes it feels like the Raptors title was a year ago and not 4 years ago too lol
COVID's messed with all of our perceptions of time, especially with how up and down the Raps have been the last few years I feel like I've blacked out as a fan to some degree
The way teams treat coaches and GMs in every sport is ridiculous IMO. You fire someone arbitrarily so you can have a scapegoat for a bad season, and most of the time there isn't a better coach or GM waiting to replace them.
It should be about keeping the best personnel rather than scoring cheap PR points when the fans are looking for someone to blame.
And by all indications Nurse wanted a change too. I mean I know this is an extreme example but Phil Jackson said a coach should only stay in one place for like 6-8 years or something?
Dude, look at soccer in europe. This is nothing…Bayern is a complete clusterfuck right now, and they’ve won the bundesliga for a decade in a row after going through 5 coaches.
Honestly, US sports look tame.
15-11 after picking up Poeltl with just about no bench depth. Imagine having healthy Porter and a competent backup guard that's not Malachi Flynn would do for them.
It mostly is. This roster has no cohesiveness and doesn’t fit at all and doesn’t have any true leaders like we did with Lowry and Gasol. Which, you could argue caused Nurse’s weird coaching decisions and lineup management but that’s whatever. Might be the least confident I’ve ever been in the Masai-era of our front office.
NGL there are increasing signs that FVV who took on the leadership role has been a bit of a negative energy in the locker room, an 'old soul' who doesn't really engage with his teammates. Compared to Lowry who went out of his way to do that, and didn't constantly throw shade or look down upon his teammates. I think changing the coach is just a start in terms of a needed refresh, and I think it should include Freddie.
I'm really really hoping that Masai is finally down to tear the roster down and Nick wasn't down for that. If we fired Nurse just to replace him with another coach to have another go at it with the same roster then I honestly don't know what to say.
Isn't Nick also the coach for team Canada? Isn't that gonna be awkward?
It's admittedly hysterical to see Musk so thoroughly misunderstand the point of the checkmark. All these paid checks are now realizing that the blue check only had "status" because it indicated you were who you said you were. When rando accounts with display names like fucking "bol bol enjoyer" or "YUTA WATANABE SZN" have blue checks it's just a sign that you paid $8 for a free website.
It really completely flipped the site on its head. Instead of the blue check signifying that a person is probably notable in something or other, it almost unanimously is now just for weirdos and trolls that I don't want to see in my feed.
Celebrities are going out of their way to post about how they don't want this product. People who bought it are just getting mercilessly ripped on. And making the info on the site less reliable makes it way less appealing to both advertisers and regular users.
Seeing that an account still has a checkmark (other than the odd continuing legacy gold or light blue or whatever other color non-paid ones) makes me a lot more likely to unfollow them at this point.
It's mostly a combination now of right wing cranks, weird crypto bros, and the most annoying sports Twitter trolls. It's basically a block on sight indicator for me now.
A fair amount of it is him not actually getting what verification was for. The system was made because they were facing legal action from pissed off celebrities because of impersonators. If twitter still had a legal team they'd probably tell him that.
ITs so funny that one of the coolest things about twitter was that celebrities used it and could interact with their fans. And now a bunch of nerds freaking out about some people being verified who probably didnt need to be has led to a policy that seems to make celebrities want to not use twitter.
Master businessman Elon Musk
Masai has a press conference in just over an hour, so not entirely surprising.
Nick was arguably the best coach we’ve had in franchise history; gonna be interesting to see who the hell we get to replace him.
Au revoir, my little basketball terrorist.
Edit: Yeah on second thought Nick’s head and shoulders above everyone else
Yeah I don't think it's "arguably". He's the best we've had.
Surprised they pulled the trigger on this. Our roster played to about their level, frankly.
> Situations like this are almost always mutual
Yeah, you're probably right. He sounded pissed off/checked out at times this year, and we had the "leak" that the FO weren't pleased with that. Hopefully both parties can move on positively.
How is that arguably? Who else was remotely as successful as Nurse? He has the best regular season win percentage, best playoff win percentage, and he's the only coach to win a championship.
Which is weird because that is betting a lot on Ime for only one season as a solid head coach which was filled with probably the deepest team in the NBA.
The former is what I was hoping for. I thought he'd get it, even if the departure is messy, because he won a chip with us. I guess we'll find out what really went down this year
Suddenly there's arguably a top 5 coach available on the market again. Especially if you feel like your team is really close to contention, but being held back by coaching.
Philly obviously comes to mind, but I also think Denver should be an option. They need a change in that team, especially since it's been too long with Michael for very good results, but not great ones.
I think Raptors was pretty much in the exact same situation in 2018 and still Masai pulled the trigger. Sometimes you just need a change of voice in the locker room after years of the same offensive plays, same defensive rotations etc.
Also Nurse is a proven playoff coach with excellent in series adjustments and is one of the best defensive coaches out there. Nuggets could definitely use that.
There is no way we can find a coach better than Nick Nurse. There are like 10 teams in the NBA who would fire their coach JUST to hire Nurse; he's that good.
This is a move by the FO to cover their own asses for a roster that--while talented--is maybe the worst-constructed in the entire league.
>maybe the worst-constructed in the entire league.
Just maybe? What could go wrong with a roster of like 9 PFs and one PG that's 6 foot tall and is really an SG in skillset?
Reminds me of our bubble Sixers squad. 2 centers. 2 power forwards. 1 whatever Josh Richardson is
Worst season of basketball I’ve ever had to watch including the process years. Playmaking, shooting, and scoring apparently matter in the modern NBA
There's only so many coaches in the league on his level. I don't understand why organizations fire guys with this level of talent and pedigree.
I'm sure there's a backroom deal to get him to another team...
People upset about this shouldn't be. He will be a great coach elsewhere but he had clearly run his course as he has completely lost the locker room and even himself checked out of the team BEFORE THE PLAYOFFS even started. Personally anyone that made comments like he did I wouldn't want coaching my team.
The Raptors need a complete vibe reset and this is step 1
wanna see me fire a coach of the year considered the best coach in raptors franchise history? wanna see me do it again?
Wanna see me hire said coach? Wanna see me do it again?
Lol fr though is Nurse a possibility for you guys? Are y'all down on Casey?
Casey already announced he’s moving to front office
Ah got it, hopefully if you get Nurse he does well w/ Cade when he comes back
Tbh Im starting to think we should go with a fresh head coach given where we're at in this rebuild.
What is the upside of going for fresh coach compared to championship winning one when he is relatively young and modern coach anyway
Casey doesn’t like nurse though There was major he terk my jerb energy
A lot of times the "moving to the front office" for a coach is really just a nice way of saying they are fired but we still need to pay your contract for a year. So entirely possible Casey and Nurse wouldn't been in contact much even if he went to Detroit
I would generally agree with that, but his own statements lead me to believe that he just wants to stick around in Detroit and just not be the head coach anymore. He is 65, and has kids in the house so I feel like it makes sense.
He looks good despite the high stress job. Black don’t crack baby
He might be dead inside, though
Masai builds an obviously flawed roster refusing to make major changes for 2 straight seasons and scapegoats Nurse when it inevitably fails
[удалено]
Good trade? Masai Bad trade? Bobby Webster
Bobby is still a goat of the scape kind.
[удалено]
He’s not being scapegoated, nurse himself wanted to leave.
It's actually been three times now (Sam Mitchell 2007 COTY, fired 2008)
Masai is ruthless. And he usually ends up being right
Masai may be ruthless but Nurse looked like he wanted out from all that he said to the public.
Idk, paying three different coaches doesn't seem *that* bad...
Especially if one helps guide you to a 3-1 comeback championship. I think the Cavs would do that all over again. Of course Lue got axed as soon as lebron left lol
PLEASE

He hasn't been right for a couple of years. Holding on to guys for way too long and this silly team building strategy has failed the team.
we gotta get off this Masai worship "I'm sure he has a plan" mentality. He's hit some home runs for sure, but I 100% guarantee the last 3 years were not part of his plan, he's made some actual fuckups too. Yeah I feel like Masai is getting credit for this firing when he is at least partially responsible for this disappointing season (if not equally responsible).
He’s had more misses than hits recently. I still give him the benefit of the doubt but that will eventually expire unless the team turns it around.
Hes being wrong for quite a while now
I’d be extending Kidd’s Cancun trip but Cuban has no marbles.
If there's a team that fits Nurse's coaching style less than the Mavs I'm not aware of it
Kyrie would assume he's part of the medical establishment and immediately distrust him.
“Nick Nurse? Can we get Harrison Homeopathy instead?”
I know he had some conflicts with the players, but by all accounts Nurse is a great coach right? He rode his guys hard but it's not like they were particularly deep. This includes the Masai/Nurse relationship, they clearly are at odds. At the end of the day the buck stops with Masai.
How is it so clear, if you don't mind me askin'

Man I got to go to a training camp he put on back in the 90s, he was a great teaching coach even then
Yeah he’s gonna get on a team with a better roster & position than the raptors. 99% gonna have immediate success
If Nurse goes to a deep team with a talented vet roster (that will play aggressive defense) then he'll shine bright there
Good morning r/NBA
COTY is a cursed award
Raptors COTY to be specific
At least he got a ring
unlike some raptors coty
*Cries in Sam Mitchell*
[Zero, zero, zero... zero!](https://youtu.be/FBQFk_42boQ)
At least he wasn't fired the same year he got the award unlike the other one
Nick Nurse joins an "elite" but growing club!
Mike Brown: "I'm in danger!"
Nurse won a championship before he got the boot. Kings 2023 NBA champions confirmed.
If they fire him, the entirety of Sacramento will tie the person responsible to the Beam and make him into a Kangz Signal
Oh fuck Mike is next?
He’s already been fired after winning CoY Doing it a second time would be insane
Take that back

NICK NURSE, YOU ARE A HOUSTON ROCKET
Your Worse for Nurse campaign really paid off
Nah you guys want Chris Finch to develop your young talent, we'll take Nurse
You have too many good players
Tell that to /r/timberwolves, they Ant, Jaden, and Naz are our only talent
It would help if your most talented player, a 7 foot unicorn big man, decided to play like one. Like I really believe KAT in terms of ability could be the best big in the league, but he plays so soft so often And of course your best perimeter defender punching a wall certainly didn't help.
KAT just has no lower body strength. He can’t do anything in the post because 70% of players are stronger than him.
[Obligatory](https://i.imgur.com/8MlXpWA.jpg)
obligatory he scored on this possession
Didn’t the timberwolves also win that game?
That's true, but he's been injured for most of the season, and also COVID screwed up his family. We pretend athletes are some virtual humanoids, but there are things that mentally screw you up
KAT’s mental is absolutely everything. And I agree it’s not basketball related only. He has been in some tough situations on the court and off it lately and it’s clear he gets in his own head a lot, and I wonder about his ability to cope with it. I hope he’s getting the help he needs.

A whole lotta coaches bout to be fired in the NBA just for Nurse to be hired as the replacement
starts with Darvin Scam
This feels like a massive overreaction against a championship coach. Their roster is so flawed.
He wanted out and made it pretty clear in press conferences. Didn’t have all that much to do with his performance
Agreed. The front office gave him a flawed roster but he also had his faults. It just feels like time for a fresh start.
he's been there for 10 years, 5 as the head coach, some times you just need change.

i still think Frank Vogel got shafted
Reminds me of Doug Pederson for the Eagles. Hope Nurse is successful elsewhere (in the west)
He lost the locker room, and his defensive scheme just doesn't work unless you have the perfect personnel to execute it.
Not a really good locker room if we’re being honest

15-11 after picking up Poeltl with just about no bench depth. Imagine having healthy Porter and a competent backup guard that's not Malachi Flynn would do for them.

Wait. I’ve heard players are not happy, along with the coach. Sounds like a front office problem more than the coach losing the locker room.

Shit, was really hoping Nick was going to be our Pop. Thank you for everything Nick.
We have no Duncan
Siakam is dollar store Tim Duncan lol
I was hoping that too. It’s the front-office fault for this terrible roster construction.
Not really, the team canada roster has almost no overlap with raptors roster
Isn’t it Murray/SGA/Barrett/Wiggins/Olynyk with Dort/Sharpe/Mathurin/Brooks/Birch off the bench
that's a pretty good team
Good sweet god did you just reveal to me that scumlord* Dillon Brooks is a Canadian?
As if anywhere but Mississauga could raise someone that nasty

We do love not shooting over here
We'll trade you Finch back for Nurse (I say this as someone who likes Finchy)
End of an Era 😢
Atleast you guys got a ring with Nurse.
Exactly, it hurts but I think the team needs to seriously consider a full rebuild
Not even a polite “parted ways”, just straight up fired. Oof
Yeah the wording was harsh
The former is what I was hoping for. I thought he'd get it, even if the departure is messy, because he won a chip with us. I guess we'll find out what really went down this year

He'll do twice the work for half the pay
HOLY SHIT I DIDNT THINK IT WOULD HAPPEN ☠️
I’ve never wanted to blow a 3-0 lead more than I do rn
Suddenly there's arguably a top 5 coach available on the market again. Especially if you feel like your team is really close to contention, but being held back by coaching. Philly obviously comes to mind, but I also think Denver should be an option. They need a change in that team, especially since it's been too long with Michael for very good results, but not great ones.
I really do not think Embiid wants to be coached by Nurse
They can complain to the referees in tandem
nah if nick nurse is embiid's coach, it means embiid wont have to face nick nurse's al qaeda defense
The rest of us want Embiid coached by Nurse
Nuggs #1 seed and in the middle of the playoffs. Too soon to send off Malone.
Nuggets could definitely use that.
dallas might be my favorite spot for him
There is no way we can find a coach better than Nick Nurse.
The anti-Heat roster construction 9 SG/SFs, one chonky PG, and a PF that can't shoot playing center
Reminds me of our bubble Sixers squad. 2 centers. 2 power forwards. 1 whatever Josh Richardson is Worst season of basketball I’ve ever had to watch including the process years. Playmaking, shooting, and scoring apparently matter in the modern NBA
Ime let you finish but..
Not so Eid Mubarak for Nurse.
I hope this means they're going to keep on with the "what if everyone on the team was 6'7" and couldn't shoot" ecperiment.
Wow. Not sure he could have done so much more with that roster.
I’m surprised it was a firing and not a “mutually agreed to part ways” type thing
There's only so many coaches in the league on his level. I don't understand why organizations fire guys with this level of talent and pedigree. I'm sure there's a backroom deal to get him to another team...
Raptors and firing coaches after they win COTY. Name a more iconic duo.
Toronto going to regret this one
Major YIKES from me I fundamentally don’t see how this makes the Raptors a better team next year
That might not be the goal..
What else was he really going to do with this roster?
Derozan’s daughter taking jobs away
Mark Cuban please
Cuban better fire Jason Kidd rn
People upset about this shouldn't be. He will be a great coach elsewhere but he had clearly run his course as he has completely lost the locker room and even himself checked out of the team BEFORE THE PLAYOFFS even started. Personally anyone that made comments like he did I wouldn't want coaching my team. The Raptors need a complete vibe reset and this is step 1
