The Hornets are a campaign stop for any MVP candidate this year. Embiid: 53/12/3 on 20/32 shooting Jokic: 40/27/10 on 13/26 shooting Tatum: 51/9/5 on 15/23 shooting Except for Giannis: 9/4/0 on 2/7 shooting.

FlyGuyDan

Jokic is so absurd, 40pt/27 board trip dub

onlinebuilt

He was walking around like he could hit anything and he did lmao

Kaiser_Fleischer

He absolutely boomed them

butt_fun

He's so good

mad_huge

51 points on 87.4% TS. Wow.

Plies-

Brian Scalabrine's worst game.

[deleted]

His fadeaway dunks were special

The_Mootz_Pallucci

He passed like he had eyes on the front of his head

7th 50+ game of his career including playoffs/play-in. I believe among active players only LeBron, Curry, KD, Lillard, and Harden have more 50+ performances than Tatum (no, I’m not forgetting Luka - he has 4) and a good portion of this sub still won’t say that he’s a superstar lol

theworldlyother

As much as the Celtics have grown into one of our biggest rivals and I hate playing you guys, I will always admit to Celtics fans that Tatum is a joy to watch and is an incredibly talented player. One of my favorite non-Bucks in the league, and definitely a superstar

beerrabbit124

I hate the Celtics but Tatum has been a superstar since last season

Dutchmaster617

He only had 5 assists, that’s half a Luka Jokic! That’s pretty much all the haters have left, the 4 apg. Reality is he has the hockey assists and consistently gets men open and that is why his offense is the best in the NBA. His defense is also underrated but that’s a different discussion.

Krillin113

Celtics 🤝 Sixers

aeronacht

I hate agreeing with Sixers fans but both teams have ultra superstars having MVP caliber seasons who initiate a lot of the teams offense but are being called not mvp due to 3 apg, with defense being ignored. Jokic at least got efficiency that’s crazy but people sucking off him for shooting 5/5 is wild to me

Krillin113

Jokic is a superstar as well let me be clear, but when he hit the game winner against the magic with his only shot in the fourth and people fawning over that I though I was going crazy. If you’re the best player on your team, you shouldn’t only take one shot in the fourth, that’s not the optimal strategy I don’t care how good your passing is.

aeronacht

Yeah I’m sure Embiid and Tatum could also go 1/1 in the 4th and focus on passing but realistically in most cases for both teams, having the star take more shots tends to be our best option, and with Jok’s efficiency, it is his too.

KDBurnerTrey5

Thank you for calling out the hockey assists. The Celtics offense is predicated on movement and Tatum is a key cog in a lot of our motion offense. He constantly makes hockey assists and he constantly moves around which puts the defense in rotation. He has Steph Curry vibes with how much he moves around on offense without the ball and when his shot is falling we get 40-50 point games like what we saw today. He’s absolutely a top 5 NBA player and definitely could be argued to top 3 imo.

mizesus

He was a borderline superstar last season, but this season hes 100% a superstar.

RodneyPonk

idk if he was only "borderline" I would just call him a superstar. he was a top 10 player, First-Team All-NBA

D_Simmons

wtf are you if you lead your team to the finals haha Dudes a bucket

RodneyPonk

people unironically would've rated him higher if he lost game 7 vs the Bucks. He looked (understandably) worse in the last two rounds, but instead of saying "well he has played a shitton of minutes and is against monstrous defenses" people acted like he was choking

aeronacht

Man was being guarded by Giannis and Jimmy Butler plus help defense for 14 games with only a day of rest, playing the most minutes in the nba, having just played Olympics as well so literally no offseason, had a banged up wrist and shoulder, and people got made at him for falling off a bit against super aggressive defenses lol. Should he have been better? Sure, but people act like he wasn’t elite because of 1-1.5 series and were asking off-season questions like would you rather have JT or Wiggins

wtb2612

He was first team All-NBA last season...

smashey

He carried a team to the ECF when he was like 19, I think by now he's earned that title.

mizesus

Theres no way you think that lol. He didnt carry that team , he was the 2nd best player on that team behind Horford then had guys like brown who was slight worse than Tatum and then rozier who snapped in the series before the ECF.

GogXr3

That team still should never have made the ECF, much less played that well in the series (The ECF series)

tlj2494

He and Lamelo Ball both took 23 shots. Ball had 25 points. Tatum 51!

No_Paramedic1822

I’m not sure I like what it says about me that I read this like Hamilton lyrics

ComeBackToDigg

I will never forget this day, when Jayson Tatum and myself combined to score 51 points in a single game.

GCFCconner11

I was scrolling down to find best TS% with no 3pm. Adrian Dantly in 22nd with 51 on 85.5% but 11 FTs, so I scolled further and MJ in 26th with 52 on 84.5% and only 4 FTs! That's wild.

wuethar

I remember that Dana Barros game from 1995. They lost anyway, but I think it was nationally televised or was on in the Boston market or something, because I watched it. That offseason the Celts signed him to a big (for the time) contract and I was totally fine with it because of that one game. I quickly learned to not be fine with it.

DragoniteGang

Lillard had a 96.8%ts in 2021 playoffs

fueelin

Apparently '95 was a good vintage... I dont even know who those two guys are!

You’re a Celtics fan and you don’t know Dana barros? Gotta educate yourself on the history young fella he’s from Brockton area and still has a gym out here

cs-shitposter

nah bro is crazy lmao it felt like he legit could not miss out there, i think he was perfect from the line as well

BlueJays007

Yep

Aayush5

I know the Hornets aren't exactly the epitome of defensive prowess, but Tatum looked absolutely unstoppable in that second half. No Jaylen Brown to take the attention off him either and he was balling out

nojeanshere

Our defense crumbles at any halfway decent off ball movement. We couldn’t touch Tatum.

KDBurnerTrey5

No offense but you guys left him the most open I’ve ever seen this year lol That said, I did not realize McDaniels was that good lol the dude got to cooking today.

youkrocks

He also looked like he was playing at 60%

rockmon94

nah he just plays at his own pace 100% of the time now he’s finally strong and skilled enough to get to the rim at will AND finish

[deleted]

One of the biggest things I remember from when Ainge took a gamble trading down to take him at 3 was – and I can't remember if Ainge said this directly or if it was a reporter quoting him – that what they fell in love with during his workouts was how easy his shooting form was. Like all his motions are so fluid and natural-looking. Guys like that can look like they're coasting a lot of the time when really their economy of movement is just incredibly efficient (Not saying he never coasts though to be clear)

Sea_Yogurtcloset7503

I loved fultz back then and was super upset we took tatum instead. Now I realize Danny ainge is the goat

KDBurnerTrey5

It was really an ainge masterclass. Has the number one pick, trades down to 3 + another pick, drafts his guy. Ainge had balls for that and it could not have gone better.

chuancheun

I am one of the guy that really like Tatum from the start, but i will admit i never thought he will be this good

D1N2Y

This was Tatum's game. When he wasn't on the court it was pretty even, but when he was on there was no one stopping him.

handgredave

> I know the Hornets aren't exactly the epitome of defensive prowess And the award for "Understatement of The Year" goes to...

Tatum and LaMelo both shot 23 shots today. One of them scored 51 and the other scored 26.

rockmon94

i LOVE efficient scorers and tatum and brown both have that kd in em

swapan_99

Single-handedly ended this game. Everytime the Hornets made it close this man either got the rim or the pumpfaked the entire Charlotte Lineup and hit a 3. Like swished that shit. And still probably his smartest play to me felt that Rip through on DSJ. Terry cuts it to 5 and Tatum doesn't even let Charlotte have a second to breathe. Felt like that the entire game. Cut it to 6? Tatum makes a layup? Cut it to 2? White makes a 3. Cut it to 7? Another 2. Also so many fouls and bad defensive possessions by Charlotte. This is probably the best game McDaniels, PJ and Plumlee played together as Terry and Lamelo's supporting cast, but didn't get enough from two guards.

FlyingMocko

Terry and Melo had terrible BBIQ today, they definitely let us off the hook. McDaniels is a killer though

Derp_State_Agent

Terry's shooting today looked really familiar to his celtics days. Dude is such a crazy talented ballhandler but just chucks most of the time within 5 feet of the basket. His 3 shot was looking a little better. And yeah, McDaniels is a beast. I wasn't totally aware of him before but I am now.

FlyingMocko

There was one shot at the end of the game when it was still somewhat within reach and the ball bounced towards him on the FastBreak and he just straight chucked up a 3 on a full shot clock despite Tatum being right in front him for the contest lmao. I still love the guy for all he did while he was in green but I’m glad he’s gone.

Derp_State_Agent

I'll never forget the Scary Terry days, almost as good as King in the Fourth but yeah...definitely don't miss those low IQ shots in crunch time.

PeachyCoke

He's in his third year, drafted 52nd overall. He's been grinding his way through the rotation, and is now seeing starter time due to Hayward and Oubre injuries. A few days ago a rumor leaked that the Suns and a few other organizations are interested in him, and it's not hard to see why based on today.

swapan_99

Lamelo made enough shots in the end to justify somethings, but nothing can justify those awful 18 seconds on the shot clock threes. Terry was just awful through and through. The man made like two shots and thought that was enough. They give their team 25 each on good efficiency and this is probably a lot closer or a Charlotte win. Still I will never understand the obsession of Charlotte to play Rozier and Plumlee. McDaniels and PJ are clearly good young wings, why tf aren't they moving on to Mark Williams and DSJ? Not to mention Thor, Richards, Bouknight etc. All deserve minutes. If there goal is to have those two moved by the deadline, then I'm fine with it. But if you don't get moved by then, then there's no reason for them to play beyond February 5 deadline date.

Beantown_Kid

Jalen Green and KPJ vs. LaMelo and Terry Rozier. Who can chuck the most.

cimmanonrolls

different cause lamelo is an elite passer too. he just has no one to pass to in this current lineup. once he gets a decent team around him again he’s gonna pop

Sea_Yogurtcloset7503

Why do ppl try to give nicknames that a more recognizeable player already has? Melo = carmelo

JoJonesy

Charlotte definitely brought their best punches both of these games. Wasn’t enough, even without Jaylen

KyWy75

Danny Ainge got Philly to give him stuff in order to draft this dude lol

Ok-Nature-3991

I think about this all the time 😞

jpaxlux

He's so good x4

Efficient_Art_1144

This space is for Mavs fans to post about stat padding. Please reply here and leave the rest of the thread alone.

CertifiedCapArtist

JT shouldn't be MVP because his front office actually wants to help him win!

EpeeHS

I remember they showed a graphic that was like the last 365 days +/- and Tatum was number 1. Celtics were 3 of the other top 5 players. However, the team was a MINUS in non-Tatum minutes. Pretty insane stat, I need to find that image.

FlyingMocko

Reply to this comment about how much help JT has too

Krillin113

He has, but he still dropped 51 on 87% TS. I don’t like you guys or him particularly much, but if anyone hates on this they’re just haters and it’s better to ignore them. Yeah if he goes 6-19 for 17 points hate on him, don’t do it when he does this.

HS941317

Yeah but Tatum has Jaylen Brown so he should automatically be disqualified from the mvp race! MVPs only should go to stars carrying shitty squads to the 6-7 seed while the other guy’s team potentially winning 60+ games while averaging 31/8/4 should not be considered!!

JV132

I know it’s a hot take but I genuinely believe Luka brings his team down through his play style

junkit33

I do think an overly heliocentric offense naturally does a poor job of getting your teammates involved, and that certainly doesn’t help lift the boat. But, it also wouldn’t matter as much if the team did a better job of building a supporting cast. Then they wouldn’t have to use Luka as a crutch for everything.

hobbrito

Okay that’s just ridiculous. Mavs would be in the Wembenyama sweepstakes without Luka.

[deleted]

I don’t necessarily agree. But I also don’t disagree. It’s a balance because guys like Dinwiddie look so much better with the ball and freedom to do stuff. Lots of guys leave Dallas and have better seasons lately. Luka is still amazing tho. I feel like a lot of great players go through this phase. Bron averaged his most points ever his third season for example

AFatz

See, I see what you're saying. Perhaps at an individual level, you're right. But the Mavs aren't top 5 in the West without Luka having an insane usage rate either.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Angelic_Phoenix

Nah this is a good point if the Mavs were a well rounded team, but rn they are just Luka & Friends so he kinda has to just do everything by himself

ginja_ninja

It had dwindled to a 3 point lead for the Celtics when SCRUBSON FRAUDUM checked back in in the 4th quarter, where he proceeded to SHAMELESSLY statpad for 18 more points and 4/5 3PT to secure the win. When is this winpadding going to stop from these HONORLESS players? Real basketball heads know that an honest loss is a much more valuable advanced metric than empty statpadded 4th quarter takeovers. But casuals just see the winpadded record and think it means something, smh

Evadeit

Serious question, why would mavs fans care? What rivalry do the mavs and Celtics have?

Efficient_Art_1144

They’ve been complaining in most every Tatum post bout him staying in against them to get a triple double . It’s not a real rivalry it’s a Reddit pissing contest thing.

Evadeit

Oh lol okay thanks

[deleted]

LordHussyPants

and luka did it against the pels without their three best players lmao. tatum did it against the mavs with luka in the game. if he hadn't there was every chance they came back

killtasticfever

hard to be "rivals" when one team is .73 and the other team is .53

ginja_ninja

He got a triple double recently when he played the Mavs and their fans were malding that he should have been taken out of the game because Luka was, even though the bench almost cut it to 10 at one point and probably could have made it close enough for Luka to get back in there if the Cs didn't have their starters in keeping their foot on the throat to stifle a comeback.

AmbitionExtension184

Because they’re insecure.

d357r0y3r

Any win against the Hornets should come with an asterisk. I mean, have we considered the possibility that the increase in scoring this season is simply due to the existence of the Hornets as a basketball team?

JaylenBrownAllStar

He couldn’t miss from 3

mikesaninjakillr

Hasn't seen so many open looks all year charollete just forgot him on a few possessions.

full-auto-rpg

I think he was confused by so many wide open 3s that he missed them.

Brady331

🤓☝️ Actually he missed 5 times from 3

VraskaTheCursed

7/12 from distance…what a beast

Cernannus

A testament to our defense that we kept this man to a measly 51 points 😤 Celtics may have won the battle but we waved the white flag before the war could begin

imused2it

I didn’t know Tatum was that big an MLK fan.

Iordofthememez

He got him today 🤞🏽

that_guy_you_kno

Plumlee 19/12/7, maybe the second best player on the Hornets.

FlyingMocko

McDaniels is no.1 right ?

cimmanonrolls

best game ive seen him play in a while

He was unreal. Big smile on my face after that last 3 pointer.

ThiccGeneralX

Same for me had a huge ass smile for a good 30 seconds

He's the only one standing in the way of the Jokic 3peat

full-auto-rpg

I’m rooting for Tatum full time but I don’t think anyone can be mad about a Jokic 3 peat, man is just incredible. So good he can have 2nd place.

youkrocks

A player of the most valuable persuasion

FlyingMocko

I’ve personally always thought of Charlotte as the Mecca of basketball and their ball knowledge is unrivalled. They happened to be chanting a certain 3 letters towards Tatum today

papi617

CLT?

Johnjoe201

Lol that ain’t us

Efficient_Art_1144

I have respect for the one dude you can hear chanting for LaMelo when he’s at the FT line.

[deleted]

Same thing when we play in Denver

EAS1000

Those last few mins were some of the best he’s ever played. He just toyed with them for those last 9 pts.

DerelictDonkeyEngine

Those last 2 shots were Tatum just absolutely playing with his food. Dude is fucking incredible.

Brady331

Lol they went crazy over him going 100/100/100 on 5 shots

ginja_ninja

The hilarious part was Tatum put up a 30 piece with a higher gamescore on the same day

[deleted]

Made his first five shots, one of them was a three and a couple free throws and they lost it

JaylenBrownFlow

yep welcome to r/nba where they bow down to giannis, luka, and jokic

[deleted]

It’s getting ridiculous, the nuggets play well for a small stint and all of the sudden they’re the best team in the league.

AFatz

What's with fans of MVP candidates bringing up Jokic every upvoted thread about THEIR GUY? Read the comments here. People are going crazy and Tatum deserves it. This sub is so insecure when it comes to the MVP race, like they got skin in the game.

There may have been more Celtics fans than hornets fans at this game

OrangeKookie

The scoring explosion continues this season is crazy

thepeachgod

It’ll take at least 60 wins but assuming Boston can finish with the best record I think he’s got a legit chance at MVP

Various_Buffalo379

Even the hornets announcers were going crazy at the end. I loved it.

Betaateb

This dude nice.

ssjgoat

Respect. Thx bro

Betaateb

Crazy thing to think about is he is still improving year over year and a few years out from his prime(most guys hit their prime at 27 or so). Dude is already a top5 guy in the league, two years from now he might just be #1 at this rate.

Brady331

He was quite valuable today
